this, wow, what a way to wake up. a glowing sun rise over walnut creek on another clear and chilly morning across the bay. thank you so much for starting your sunday morning with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. i wonder if it will be like yesterday, another freezing morning, but it was so beautiful yesterday. >> it's going to continue to be cold, but those beautiful sun rises and sunsets are going to make up for it. good morning, everyone. just across our camera network this morning, we are waking up in the 30s and 40s, but the sun rise across the bay area, we do want to focus our attention in the north bay where we have this frost advisory until about 10:00 a.m. once we get a little more sunshine here, maybe that patchy frost on the wind shield will give yourself a couple more minutes to start the car. we'll do 28 in nevato. 33 in napa. more starting to go into the 40s once we go south and east of the

bay area. we'll continue with the dry weather for the week ahead, and i'll show you when the long-range forecasts are hinting at the rush of rain. kira, back to you. we begin with new details this morning on a story we brought to you first as breaking news yesterday morning. a security guard shot and killed while on the job trying to stop a thief. it happened late friday night at a 7/eleven in oakland. alyssa gourd spoke with people who remember the guard as friendly and dedicated to his job. >> reporter: people in the area say this 7/eleven is a fixture in the community. and a lot of the customers came in today to express their personal condolences to the store's staff. these oakland neighbors dropped by the 7/eleven at the corner of harrison and bay place to spread flowers in memory of the security guard who worked in this very spot.

>> part of the craziness of it is i don't know his name. >> i've gone in many times and he's sitting there and talking to people, saying hi to people. >> reporter: oakland police say on friday night, the guard who worked here was trying to prevent a person from taking items when that person shot him and took off in a car. the guard died of his injuries. police are not releasing his name yet, but the alameda county coroner says he was a 59-year-old man. >> it was very unfortunate what hand, very unfortunate. and, umm, senseless. >> reporter: police have not released any information about a potential suspect. >> i know that the owners are pretty broken up about this. >> reporter: employees didn't want to speak with us on camera, but off camera told us this guard was like family to them and had worked there a long time. >> he was a giving person. >> reporter: many customers didn't even know the guard's name, but they had plenty of anecdotes about him showing kindness. >> he went out of his way to do

his job well, to give a lot to a lot of the homeless and mentally unwell young people who hung around here. he would buy them food, provide them support during episodes. >> reporter: while the investigation into the shooting continues, neighbors are mourning a familiar face in their daily lives. alyssa gourd, "today in the bay." too another followup. we are hearing from police in contra costa county now that a tense standoff is over. it all started thursday night when a former police officer and marine barricaded himself inside a home. the 40-year-old man shot his wife when she tried to get inside the home. she is expected to be okay. a team of authorities chonlted, including the s.w.a.t. team, but six hours later friday morning, the s.w.a.t. team left. undercover officers continued to monitor the home and social

media. once again on friday night, police say they felt he became a threat to the public. again, the s.w.a.t. team returned, blocking off the neighborhood for a second night. he finally surrendered yesterday morning. neighbors are glad their street are safe again, but still left shaken about the decisions police made. >> i was really alarmed he had been left in the house, and we saw no police presence, or at least none that we could tell were police. >> we did not believe he presented an immediate threat to community. i decided that the presence of a s.w.a.t. team could have made things worse, so i ordered them to disengage. >> as we reported yesterday this morning, he fired shots at the police vehicles. he now faces several charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and attempted homicide of a police officer.

we are following developing news out of ventura county, where a fire that broke out yesterday morning has grown to 2500 acres. more than 100 firefighters are battling the so-called south fire from the ground and the skies. wind and dry conditions are fueling the fire. it is burning along a ridge north of thousand oaks. evacuation orders have been issued for people living nearby. some roads in the area also are closed. turning now to our continuing coverage of the israel-hamas war. we are learning more about an israeli being held by hostage by hamas killed during a rescue attempt. seen here in this video, he died yesterday. israel blames hamas for its death, saying it tried to free hostages, but instead the raid left two soldiers badly injured. in tel aviv, former hostages

described how every day in captivity felt like hell. fed very little, barely sleeping, and in constant fear. family members of hostages still in captivity struggle to maintain hope. >> this after 60 days, we have some information about them. >> my family and i are not lighting candles this year. our light is in captivity. >> in the south of gaza, we used to be a safe zone, israel's bombing campaign continues. another border crossing is expected to open soon to allow aid trucks through. the united nations says gaza is on the brink of a humanitarian collapse. back here locally, we are awaiting word on whether a popular oakland coffee shop will be open today after closing yesterday amid controversy. viral video showed employees of farley's east blocking a jewish customer from going into the restroom to record anti-israeli

graffiti. in a social media post, the owners of farley's east say the employees involved in the incident have been fired. the statement by the owners read in part -- in san francisco, it was a great show of support for street vendors in the mission district, where their businesses are hurting because of a temporary ban imposed by the city. the owner of mission district clothing store made in the city organized this vendor buyout in front of his business yesterday. people were invited to support sidewalk vendors who say they're struggling to make ends meet. the city enforced a 90-day ban to curb violent and illegal activity in the mission. but vendors with legal permits

say they're the ones suffering. locals are lending their support. the 90-day ban started two weeks ago, set to end in february. happening today, san jose's christmas in the park's first-ever accessible sunday. this is a live look at the annual holiday display in san jose. guests with special needs can take advantage of the day today. it's designed specifically for those who need a little extra assistance. it's open today from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. christmas in the park is open through december 31st. if you're into ugly holiday sweaters and fun holiday parties, this next story might be for you. b.a.r.t. is inviting people to its sweater fest '23 happening later today. marcus washington has what you need to know. >> there's a party this weekend, and there is a dress code. so b.a.r.t. is hosting this party. it's for their ugly sweaters. so over the past three years, b.a.r.t. has sold thousands of them, in different versions,

welcome back. on wednesday, we saw the quickly dwindling field of gop candidates take to the stage for the fourth republican presidential primary debate. ron desantis, nikki haley, vivek ramaswamy and chris christie all vying to take the spotlight from the front-runner, former president donald trump. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of "meet the press." great to see you this morning. >> great to see you. >> the republican party of iowa's presidential caucuses are scheduled for five weeks from tomorrow, monday, january 15th, it's coming quickly. you have an interview with mitt romney this morning. i read he thinks that he thinks "it was over before it began."

believing trump is a lock for the nomination, although he did say nikki haley has a shot at the nomination. what does he say this morning, is there consensus among republicans? >> well, it's a great question. he said a couple of things. he believes that nikki haley is gaining momentum, so he did signal, he didn't call for anyone else to drop out, but he said at some point the field needs to consolidate if anyone is going to seriously go after former president trump. i asked him why he hasn't endorsed nip yet. he says that would be the kiss of death. so i thought that was very interesting, as well. i asked him about a potential trump-biden rematch, if that were to come to pass. and here's what was notable, kira. he didn't rule out voting for joe biden. the reason why that's notable is because he has written in his wife's name for the past two elections. so he's clearly looking at this very seriously. one final point i'll make, he

said he wants to see senator joe manchin run as an independent. he says he has no end case that would happen, but he thinks he would be the strongest candidate. so a lot of big headlines. bottom line, he continued to underscore how he perceives the threat of former president trump. he thinks that a second trump presidency would be a threat to the democracy. however, he stopped short of saying he would want to stay in power beyond four years. liz cheney said earlier this week, she thinks he would troy to hold onto power. mitt romney doesn't think that's the case. nonetheless, he does believe, in his words, he thinks trump would be a danger. >> i suppose only time will tell who is the clairvoyant here. we look forward to that interview today. thanks for that preview. we hope you join kristen for this morning's "meet the press." she'll have interviews with mitt romney and senator chris murphy

northwest of nashville, another twister killed a child and nearly two dozen injured. los angeles police are investigating after a burglary after actor keanu reeves home. it happened wednesday night at the hollywood hills home. police say the burglars entered through the backyard, they broke a window. he was not home at the time. a firearm and some jewelry were reportedly stolen. police haven't made any arrests, but this suspect the first time burglars broke into his home. two intruders were reported in the home in 2014. lighter news now, mcdonald's held the grand opening for its cosmc's spinoff restaurant. this is the first-efficient cosmc. it's drive-through only coffee shop. some waited for hours to try the coffee, which is customizable. >> i've been waiting in this

are heading out. it is chilly out there, especially in the north bay. waking up, it's subfreezing in nevato, santa rosa. the rest of the bay area, 30s and 40s. 36 in south san jose and 42 in hayward. we are just continuing to see on satellite and radar the storms avoiding california, just fulling into the pacific northwest, just dropping into some rain and snow as we go into this weekend. but back here at home, once we start to get a little more of that sun rise, the warmth from the sun, getting you ready for the start of the workweek. by noontime, overcast skies with clouds funneling in. i think it's going to give us a nice sunset this afternoon. if you can get out there closer to the coastline, get some wonderful pictures, temperatures not climbing more than those upper 50s and 60s throughout the bay. 59 in napa.

58 in dubdublin. we are going to continue to see these cold temperatures for the start of our workweek. chilly start in nevato. 36 in fairfield. we'll do 43 in fremont. give yourself an extra time to run out the door with your jacket, turn on the car to make sure you start off your workweek nice and cozy. we'll continue to build this high pressure over the bay area, keeping us pretty dry and stable over the next couple of days. the storms, like i've been telling you, just continuing to funnel into the pacific northwest. they kind of come close to the california coastline, but then break apart. we're going to take this with a grain of salt and see those temperatures for tomorrow and on tuesday a little milder with a mix of those sun and clouds. so not too bad. we'll take that. as we look ahead in our long-range outlook, where is the rain? we desperately need it. last year, we were talking about loads of rainfall in the bay area. i don't think our next chance is until we go into next week. possibly late sunday night into monday, but these models just

good morning. it is sunday, december 10th, 7:29, the fourth night of hanukkah tonight. a live look from oakland towards san francisco on a chilly morning. thank you so much for starting it with us. hopefully, you can enjoy that sunshine from nice and safe in your home. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. yesterday turned quite lovely with the sunshine. but it's still a bit chilly. >> but giving us those beautiful sun rises and sunsets over the bay area. we are waking up in the forts in san francisco and in oakland. 34 in livermore and san martin we are subfreezing at some times in the north bay. 30 degrees in santa rosa. 32 in napa. once we get a little more of that sunshine mixing in, temperatures warm up into the 50s. yountville at 63.

many people said the smell was like a heavy petroleum or burnt tire odor. chevron told the inspectors they had experienced an upset this their bioreactor. the odor triggered a community warning system, level one, which does not come with recommendations for a shelter in place. it, by the way, would be second level one warning in two weeks. the air district late last month issued violation notices to chevron because of flaring from the refinery. running out of steam, a san francisco tap room offered the last six of a beloved bay area beer for its holiday party. the party was at buzz works on 11th street. the owner bought as much anchor steam beer as he could this summer when he found out they were closing. last night, the bar tapped their final kegs. it had several different anchor beers on draft. buzz works held a raffle for a few magnums of the famous

christmas ale. other memorabilia, as well. proceeds for the raffle will help anchor employees buy back the brewery. happening tonight, the south bay community is invited to come together in san jose for a hanukkah celebration. tonight, there is a menorah lighting, a live concert and activities for kids. organizers say there will be extra police presence at the event starting at 4:00 tonight. also happening today, san jose's christmas in the park's first-ever accessible sunday. a live look at the annual holiday display in san jose right now. it's quiet there, and guests with special needs can take advantage of this special day today. it's designed specifically for those who need a little extra assistance. it runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. today. christmas in the park also runs through december 31st. it's a must-see holiday

event for many bay area families. a trip to the east bay's christmas place. for more than five decades, homeowners build plywood christmas displays for everyone to enjoy. as tom jenson shows us, the displays do more than just light up that neighborhood. >> reporter: more than 70 fremont homes and front yards are aglow for the displays. >> it's awesome. almost every house, you know. >> reporter: some families have visited for decades. >> i'm turning 40, and i remember these decorations, a lot of them. so at least 35 years. >> it brings back great memories. we've been coming here forever. it's a great cause. >> reporter: the festivities began when robert spider can't lay created these in 1967, and it evolved organically with the

neighbors. >> i would like to support that, even though, you know, as a secular jew, i wasn't used to decorating. >> reporter: they create decorations for dozens of homes. the headquarters is here on wellington place where volunteers are collecting donations for several charities, including five local charities. >> we hand out candy canes and accept cash donations. it's free to visit, but any cash you give or online will go to our charities. >> reporter: they have a website where anybody can donate. the site happen a list of events, including a schedule of musical presentations. the lights go on every night from 6:00 to 10:00 through new year's eve.

i sure hope you bundled up in the north bay, where we have a frost advisory with us until about 10:00 this morning. 32 in nevato and calistoga and subfreezing in santa rosa. south and east of san francisco, the temperatures a bit warmer. 44 in arinda and 39 in san jose. aside from this beautiful sun rise, we're going to have more of the high clouds streaming on through as we go throughout the afternoon. 5:30 rolls around and we'll get another beautiful sunset around the bay area. what are the temperatures looking like? we'll see that mix of sun and

clouds stay with us in the low 60s. lafayette and concord, upper 50s. overall, great weather, and if you're lucky enough to come to santa clara, seahawks and 49ers, i see nothing in the way to get a 49er win this afternoon. the start of the workweek, we have to get it rolling here. chilly start for our monday. we won't be in the frost advisory conditions, but waking up to the 30s in the north bay. low 40s down into fremont and down through the santa claire valley. 39 in san martine. so give yourself an extra moment or two to get ready for work. but watch what happens this week. we'll stay dry and calm throughout the week. calistoga, fairly mild as we go into monday and tuesday. we'll dip it down into the extended forecast as we watch for our next chance of rain. we'll keep the storms away from california. high pressure is going to keep

next july 1st. moving forward, he projected a structural deficit of $58 billion of the next three years. this comes after last year's revenue report showing california with a $100 billion surplus. perfect time now to introduce political analyst larry gerston. how do we make sense of this? is it as dire as it sounds? 58 plus 68 is a lot more than is00. >> only in california can you go from $100 billion surplus to $68 billion deficit in a year. i have bad news and good news. the bad news is the deficit is so big that it's equal to the full budgets of ten states combined. how about that? the good news is, the state has a rainy day fund. it's been collecting it for years. it amounts right now to $76

billion. so that could come in handy over the next year. >> that's such a vast swing from $100 billion to negative $68 billion. how does that happen? >> new math. it's crazy. look, there are some things here to think about. during covid, it was a terrible time. and the state received about $200 billion from the federal government to pay off for all kinds of things, vaccinations, hospitalizations, the lack of employment, business losses. you know, just in terms of unemployment insurance, $100 billion was paid out to californians during that period. normally we talk about $4, $5 billion. well, that's gone. another thing, the irs allowed us to take until this november to pay last year's taxes. and doing that, the state had a tough time projecting just how

much money would be coming in or how much would be going out. guess what? a lot more going out than coming in. you put those together and we have a serious problem. >> yeah. it sounds like my household a lot more going out than coming in. so how does the legislative office figure out this problem, and how do you think it can be prevented in the future? i suppose if you have an answer, you should work for the state. >> no kidding, which i'm not sure i would want to do. a couple of things. first of all, they're going to take a good chunk of that rainy day fund, but if you take all of it, you don't have anything in the future. so they'll take about $30, $40 billion of that to go toward that deficit. but there are going to be some cuts, and when those cuts take place, they go first to education. why is that? k-12 takes about 40% of the budget, higher ed about 10%. that's half the budget.
