>> breaking news at 6:00,s firefighters break into action to stop a grass fire in the east bay. we are live at the scene with the scare for residents and details on how it started. this is "today in the bay." good morning. thanks for allowing us to be part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez. the overnight fire homes for a short time. bob redell is near the scene in pittsburg. >> reporter: good morning. you see bailey is open here. we are on the border at bay point. it has reopened in the past 30 minutes. it was shutdown for a few miles up the hill from us in concord due to the grass fire that started overnight. it started at 1:50 this morning. you see the video from the vehicle, it looks like a scion,

that caught fire on the side of the road. the investigator is trying to figure out what caused the fire at 1:50 a.m. you see in the next video here, that wind took that car fire and sent it up into the hills with the flames. it burned 50 acres. this was a three--alarm fire. one-alarm was a set of units brought out here to protect the homes on the other side of the hill with a tract housing development. that was of great importance to protect that. the fire did come within 30 feet of the homes. as you are about to hear, the homes and that neighborhood had defenible space. >> the community in the contra costa county area had defensive space. it really did help us save the

structures. >> reporter: the grass was three-to-five feet in the areas which hadn't been abated. imagine if the grass wasn't cut down by the homes, then that fire could have grown to the neighborhood. the fire department and what people have done prior to this prevented it from happening. the fire is out. this is december. if this had been summertime, the fire department would still be up in the hills to make sure nothing would flare up. because we're approaching winter time and the humidity is low and the grass is dry and it is just not as dry as you have in the hot summer months. again, 50-acre wildfire is put out. the cause is a car fire. that fire, the car fire, is under investigation. reporting live in bay point, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you, bob.

we sent out a push alert when the fire happened. time is 6:02. meteorologist kari the hall is tracking the air quality. >> it is not the best. you want to limit time outside if you are sensitive to pollutants and particulate matter. we are trying to reduce what we are putting out there because it will be unhealthy already and some of the worst readings when they measure particulate matter above 100. the north bay and the east bay are impacted. santa clara valley is not very good. no wood burning is allowed. we will see cool temperatures to start as the high pressure continues to push down with a lot of the pollutants we see today keeps skies mostly clear. we will talk more about that and when the high pressure moves out and rain moves in is coming up in a few minutes. mike, you were checking on a

couple of crashes? it was a duplicate report. no slowing and injuries. actually, no slowing through the area. no slowing for the south bay. the first brake tap is cleared. the tri-valley looks great. this counter commute with slowing eastbound 80 with a disabled vehicle. that is away from the bay bridge. also away from the bay bridge is the golden gate track. back to you. . thank you, mike. this is the live look from israel toward the gaza border. israel says the forces recovered bodies of three more hostages abducted on october 7th. two soldiers that hamas abducted that day. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is not letting up on

ground. this weekend means rain is coming back and we start to see showers on sunday and becoming more widespread on monday and tuesday. looking at why we have the smoke pollution with high pressure overhead and that pushing everything back down to the surface. with the cool temperatures, it makes the air sink. we had a fire yesterday and we have a couple of morning fires around the bay area and that's what we are breathing in. we will see a change in the pattern as we watch the storms developing in the pacific and heading to areas north. it will start to make its way into the bay area by sunday. we are clear and dry today as well as tomorrow. here we are on sunday where we see the scattered showers moving in. it doesn't start out heavy. it is off and on throughout the day on sunday. it is trending drier for sunday compared to previous runs of the computer models.

it does look widespread monday as well as tuesday. then it starts to wind down on wednesday as the storm system heads a little bit farther south of the bay area. during that time, we could see significant rainfall totals with the highest amounts in part of the north bay. the areas in pink is 3 to 4 inches of rainfall. that is a lot. the coastal areas are getting higher rainfall totals. in the valleys, you see a lot less. looking at the forecast, if you are checking out the holiday displays, the forecast looks great in the 70s. we have that for tomorrow and in the south county being in the mid-70s. sunday, mostly cloudy with off and on rain. that rain continues through next wednesday. mike, what is the follow-up on the crash in san jose? kari, we are following up on the shot. north 101 is where we see the

slowing if there was a crash. justout side of the camera range is a little dip in speed at oakland road. that is where the scene of the incident. light traffic as you head up to sja. you have an easy drive on friday as we approach the end of the year. we have a little slowing for highway 37. richmond bridge with no drama. bailey has reopened after the early fire had things closed. bob redell gave us an update. highway 4 with no problems. the last section of the bay bridge moving well toward the city. we had metering lights on for an hour now and no backups and just slowing as we lose lanes heading up the incline. back to you. thank you, mike. 6:21 right now. using a.i. to book your next vacation.

situation pretty unusual for this time of year. >> i was surprised to see such a big fire. it is a lot of dry grass behind us. they used to have cows to eat the grass and it wasn't that big of a hazard. now it has become, so the fires do spread even in the winter time. >> bailey road between bay poured and concord were shutdown. mike and bob confirmed the area reopened 30 minutes ago. before the fire, air quality was an issue, kris, but the fire, kari, did not make the spare the air alert any better? >> so, whatever wutng out there,ing including any spoke, gets pushed back down and we breathe that in. we are dealing with that this morning. as we take a look at the air

quality this morning, if you have heart conditions or breathing problems, you should limit your time outdoors. we see that in the east bay and the south bay and santa clara valley. as we look at what to expect for today, we have mid-40s in concord and low 60s this afternoon. we will talk about rain in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. thank you, kari. happening later, governor newsom will give an update on the mental health court. it is the c.a.r.e. court. >> we have ginger conejero saab with the latest. ginger, the question is did the c.a.r.e. court work the way it was supposed to work? >> reporter: kris, that is one thing that will be talked about. we anticipate more answers on

that. before the program launched in october for the seven counties in california, there was a lot of speculation of whether or not it would work and what it would mean for people involved and families and for the broader system. today, governor newsom is anticipated to give more answers now that c.a.r.e. court or community assistance recovery and empowerment court have been in pilot for the past couple months. san francisco is one of the counties that was initially part of the rollout. it has been seen by families of people diagnosed with severe mental health illness as a glimmer of hope. it would allow them to petition to the court for treatment of their loved ones. critics say it has specific requirements and coercion of treatment. under the c.a.r.e. court

initiative, some can be recommended for proceedings and they will have a hearing and public defender present. if the boxes check out, the different parties can put together a personalized care plan that helps fast track individual treatment and supportive services. c.a.r.e. court builds on the governor newsom's $14 billion multi-year investment for new housing units and treatment slots. this adds to the $10 billion of investment in community behavior health services. san francisco standard reports that 100 petitions have been filed in the last few months. not all petitions end up accepted by the court. it is giving an idea of where this is headed. los angeles has reported other parts of southern california are

seeing an increase in the number of petitions. we will have to wait and see what governor newsom has in the statewide update for c.a.r.e. court. marcus and kris. >> we will have the latest at 11:00. thank you, ginger. also today, new calls for action in oakland following the shooting death of the convenience store security guard. 59-year-old james johnson died a week ago today. police say he confronted a shoplifter at the 7/eleven. activists are planning to gather outside the store this morning. health leaders from the cdc are warning about the fast spreading covid variant called j.n.1. it is also leading more doctors to encourage people to get

glowfari, wear layers. it will be partly cloudy and temperatures in the 50s and we will see temperatures in the low 50s later on tonight. it will be cooler in san ramon. kristi yamaguchi park will see the 50s. by sunday, we will see rain coming in and we will see the rain not only for the bay area, but traveling across the region with yosemite national park in the 60s to mid-60s and rain on sunday. looking at the forecast for santa cruz, it looks nice, but cool with more clouds as we get deeper into the weekend. mike, you are starting to see the commute build up? i'm happy with the roads moving smoothly.

the back ups are forming at the richmond bridge. we are looking at the backup for westbound 580. still the rains are blocked off. for you who are not a frequent viewer, this is usual. we see the lanes here at the bay bridge impacted by the metering lights. the flow is slowing down there. a build for highway 4. the fire we talked about and bob reported off bailey road with bailey road reopening. we look ahead to anything that might impact the drive in the evening and later on, chase center has a stevie nicks concert. get off at the 280 extension. we are shifting the drive times later in the day. light traffic in the early morning and we will see the midday and afternoon traffic build as folks red cross town.

ammunition. he met with the imf this week. there is money for ukraine in the defense bill passed by the house and senate. it is a good example of bipartisanship to fund our military and give our fighting men and women a big raise. that bill goes to the president's desk for his the signature. that bill also ignores the culture war issues like abortion and transgender issues that far-right republicans wanted inserted. what they can't agree on is money for ukraine. honestly, when i say money for ukraine, it is misleading. "the washington post" points out 90% of the money we spend on ukraine is spent here because we make the tanks that we send them in american factories. we make the shells we send them in american factories. here is some examples of the ic and drones used in ukraine made in the bay area
