at the airports and we can't forget mountains of lost luggage. nbc news correspondent adrienne broaddus joins me from chicago o'hare airport with everything we need to know. i think the big question on everyone's mind is will we see a repeat of the 2022 travel headaches? it feels like we donald those during thanksgiving. how are the airlines and the airports preparing for next week? >> reporter: okay. let's start with your first question, travelers hope we don't see a repeat and southwest airlines at least is vowing passengers will not experience what they experienced last year when we saw thousands of people stranded in airports in all of those bags of luggage. first let's take a winter weath equipment and staff, they have realtime monitoring of flight schedules and their daily operation. an upgrade in the technology there. there's been upgrades to crews scheduling software and the phone call capacity.

in regards to other airlines, united airlines making more overhead bin space so that means people who are traveling if you are a little leery about checking your bags, fear not, you can bring your bags on to the flight with you, but of course if you are traveling with a carry on or your two carry on items, make sure your items in side of your bags are travel size. by contrast, some people we spoke with this morning say they don't want to take any chances. listen in. >> we kind of made it so far with all of the covid and, you know, all of the fiascos, so we pushed through it and somehow we always make it. >> i think we're getting out early enough. i think we're beating the rush. >> reporter: now, the last traveler you heard from is going to a wedding and then his final destination is the uk. he's going to be there for the holiday season and he says he has a little wiggle room because

some streets already flooded forcing people to trudge through several inches of water. local beach towns are putting up barriers bracing for more flooding and things could only get worse as the powerful system moves up the east coast. meteorologist bill karins is tracking where the storm is and where it's headed. let's start with guad venegas in hollywood beach, florida, for us. how is it out there and how are people preparing? >> reporter: zinhle, i'd also like to add it is cold. i mean, compared to what we're used to here. it feels like it's quite chilly with this wind. you can see the conditions out here in hollywood, we're at the beach, local authorities did what they can to prepare. we have these tiger dams that have been installed to protect these beach communities for the possibility of a high tide and flooding in this area, also sometimes when it floods some of the sand can go into the communities. you can see the ocean in the background. there's a possibility of rip cu and down the coast in florida so they're asking people of course to stay

out of the water. there is one person in the water, a lot of the people that came out here are tourists so we did see them speak to the lifeguard, he was talking to them about the dangers of the water. a lot of the people that are outside right now are visitors in this area. this part of the florida receives a lot of tourists who escape the bad weather in other parts of the country but now they will be dealing with this type of weather. let's hear from one of the residents here in south florida. >> this is wild. >> he wasn't liking the sand pelting him but we're going to get through it, we're headed back now. >> i've been saying for three days this is going to flood. >> reporter: now, the biggest challenge here is going to be the flooding. there's a forecast of heavy rain coming to all of florida. because of that they've canceled holiday celebrations all across the state up as north as tampa bay and other places because the flooding could be bad and we know what can happen when we get a lot of rain in a short period of time, zinhle.

>> so many people feeling it. guad venegas, i hope you get to bundle up soon. thank you. let's turn to meteorologist bill karins. we're already seeing the impacts in florida but we know the system is on the move. is it now and where is it going? >> this is going to be a nor'easter heading up the east coast this weekend but without the snow, just a big rain and windstorm and it will have the ripple effects travel wise across the country because there are so many major airports that will be affected. we start on saturday, bright reds and yellows is the heavy rain, it's a florida problem. by the time we get to sund south carolina, north carolina, all the heavy rain, charlotte, raleigh, heading up towards richmond, washington, d.c. late in the day and then on monday new york city to hartford, boston, all of northern new england. this storm is going to rain up into southern canada. so here is how it plays out this weekend, saturday outlook there is the rain, light rain in the middle of the country. in the west it's very mild, sunny, proo pretty nice and calm a beautiful saturday, 79 degrees, no problems in l.a. then on sunday we will watch a new storm trying to move in so

accidental, friendly fire inside of gaza. it appears as though the israeli military misidentified these hostages and mistook them for fighters inside the gaza strip and that's when they were killed. they were fired at by the israeli military and killed. they were identified two of them as yotam haim, who was abducted on october 7th and samer talalka also kidnapped from one of the kibbutzs around gaza on october 7th as well. the third hostage has not been identified at the request of the family, but this has been acknowledged by the israeli military and unfortunately it appears as though these three people died as though they were perhaps trying to flee or they were abandoned by their captors. zinhle. >> it's really a devastating development and of course it's coming as the humanitarian crisis in gaza is only intensifying. i know national security adviser jake sullivan announced this morning there will be a new border crossing for aid

be honest and open and people will accept that. >> mark, the reality is we are not always buying practical gifts, times we maybe need to splurge. if someone is spending on a credit card do you recommend they do buy now pay later? what are your tips and tricks? >> short term financing is always fine. somebody said if i can pay cash should i? i said if you can do 30 days, get a credit card and the points and other value then pay it off but don't use the short term financing as a substitute for financial practicality. even if you are getting a big tax refund when tax time comes around look at what you have and what you are going to get, spend within your means and, yes, credit card is fine, borrowing is fine but it should not be a substitute for longer term financing, it is only a crutch and it will get in that cycle of debt, interest, more payments, minimum payments. spend what you are able to spend and buy what you need, not what you necessarily like. i will finish saying this, a lot of people are surprised when they say they bought their child tires for their car or insurance for my family or an appliance that i need. that's not a bad idea. you are shaming them for not
