5:00 am
right now at 5:00, tracking a stormy monday morning. ahead, live team coverage on the rain and its planned path across the bay area. every single one of you guys, man, obviously we've got some stuff we've got to clean up, but a dub is a dub. that was a good team win. niners on three. one, two, three! >> niners are on top. 49ers claiming the division with another blowout win. the milestone they reached in becoming best in the west. this is "today in the bay."
5:01 am
always fun on a sunday to see. welcome to monday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get right to the top story, that rain coming down across the bay area this morning. >> we've got team coverage on the conditions you can expect to see this morning. bob redell has a look at the rainy commute in the east bay and mike inouye is tracking those slick roads and possible flooding out there. first, let's start with a look at where the rain is headed right now. meteorologist vianey arana is in for kari this morning. >> we've got some decent pockets already pushing through, pretty much the entire bay area. this is a wider look. notice, we do have some lightning strikes just off the coast. this is also going to bring the possibility of isolated thunderstorms heading into this afternoon. we've got santa rosa spread all the way down in through petaluma, we've got this band with the red and yellow hue, about to move through novato. also, even through parts of

concord, notice along 680, stretching through the interior, right here just off the coast, this cell right here with that red and orange hues, about to make its move through south san francisco. it's also expected to bring in heavy pockets through hayward, stretching through the south bay right now we've got some rain shadowed areas through san jose. but this cell right here, one located just over the santa cruz mountains, is expected to bring moderate to heavy downpours at times. we are expecting this to be the heavier brunt of the storm. i want to show you how far this extends down. this extends through central california, sacramento, through lake tahoe, down through fresno. the system is expected to impact l.a. we are expecting higher totals for the coastal mountains, but the wind is going to be gusting 30 to 40 plus miles per hour, especially for higher elevations areas. it will be a tough day on the

roads. we're going to check in with mike for traffic. >> we're looking at a busy blotter for chp. a number of smaller crashes, many spinouts or single-car crashes. this is a jackknifed big rig, one of your bigger slowdowns as you're looking westbound on 580, off of the dublin grade and toward castro valley boulevard. we have a couple of lanes blocked and they've had to run a couple of traffic breaks. i don't know if they've been able to get that big rig to the shoulder yet. you notice the green sensors mean good driving, the green highlighting means damp roadways. the blue, you see dominating the map right here, that means puddling and ponding. there's a disabled vehicle, it sounds like there may have been a truck eastbound 580, approaching the dublin interchange. both big rigs, both directions. we're looking at live pictures of san jose. notice the water kicking up off the cars and making a rooster

tail behind them. that's the conditions you'll be driving through. bob redell is out there live in livermore. bob, obviously you're out there. thank you for being out there. tell us what's it going to be like for folks? >> reporter: well, it's definitely cold, definitely gusty, as vianey was mentioning, the roads are wet. you can take a look behind me. we're in livermore along 580, headlights are heading westbound in the commute direction, brake lights are heading eastbound toward the altamont. you can see the roads are not in good condition as far as driving today. it is very wet. also remember, this is our first big rain of the season, so chp usually reminds us during those first big rains, there's been a lot of oil on the roads that has been sitting there for months. this rain will be lifting the oils, making the roads more slick than maybe you would be expecting from a normal rain, so something to keep in mind as you're heading into work this
5:05 am
morning. this is video from overnight in oakland, where you can see there was some minor flooding. this was eastbound 80 to eastbound 90, the transition there. there was also some localized flooding within the city of oakland. this is video from across the bay, on the peninsula. this was northbound 101. you can see there was a parking lot there at hillsdale boulevard, el camino real. we're showing you this video to illustrate it is wet out there. it's not catastrophic. people are able to go out and about. last night chp did shut down the westbound lanes of the richmond san rafael bridge, this was after someone was killed in a crash mid span, just before 8:00. we have no indication that that accident was weather related, but we did want to bring it up to you because the bridge has since reopened in time for the commute. back out here live in livermore, just remember to watch your
5:06 am
speeds, and also keep a good distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. and, also remember, just because the posted speed limit might be 65 miles an hour, that doesn't mean you should be going 65 miles an hour. that means that is the speed you could max out if the conditions warrant. you look behind me, it is very wet out here and dangerous if you're not careful. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> slow it down out there, thank you. >> really important. in santa cruz county, meantime, people in capitola are bracing for the brunt of the rainy season while trying to get over last year's brutal winter. in some ways the town has a long recovery ahead. many businesses endured an unusually slow summer and the historic wharf is not expected to fully reopen for another six months. with winter nearly here and weather likely to turn severe, merchants are taking precautions after being forced to close last january. >> now that the rainy season is starting to come, we have
5:07 am
sandbags hidden in front of our business, we also have our windows protected with plastic on the inside. they're really protected so no water can come in. >> she was forced to close her restaurant for two weeks after losing power last january and that cost her about $15,000. we have a lot of ways to get you information about the rain. our nbc bay area app is a great resource. it's free to download. you can get weather alerts sent straight to your phone. you can customize it for your neighborhood and it will give you a warning the rain is coming. 49ers have the inside track on the top spot in the nfc, and for the second year in a row you can already call them the best in the west. >> the niners clinched the first place in their division with a dominating win yesterday in arizona. brock purdy, kind of a homecoming for him there. the game stayed close during the first half. the niners really blew it open
5:08 am
after halftime. check out this long pass to christian mccaffrey. fell down on the play, but managed to get up and make that score. cmc had three touchdowns, as the niners win 45-29, with another day to remember for the niners starting quarterback. >> i've always dreamed of being able to come home and play in front of everybody, and just because of how much i know they have my back and support me. so i hope i was able to give them a good game and i appreciate all they've done for me. definitely something i'll look back on and be thankful for. >> conference two seed philadelphia has to win tonight against seattle to stay level with the niners, who also hold the tiebreaker. it will be a rainy monday morning commute for millions across the u.s. on the east coast the storm system is causing heavy flooding from maine to georgia. you can see south carolina and florida, flooded roads and power outages made those roads just treacherous out there.
5:09 am
now, there was some flooding on the roads, power outages across south carolina as well as florida. so if you're starting your holiday travel early, make sure to be careful as you head out on the roads, as well as going to the airport. a lot of people are already in kind of vacation mode. vianey is monitoring what we're seeing this morning. >> we're seeing flash flood still active advisories in effect, warnings, but also, i looked at a recent study last week i was working on, and they said over 70% of all airport delays are caused by weather. this is likely going to be one of those, especially considering folks traveling either in or out of the northeast. let's take a look at the national travel outlook. you can see what's going on on the east coast, you can see the impacts to the west coast. notice it stretches from boston down through new york city, d.c., and we can expect to keep this, at least through the next couple of days, with major delays likely for the northeast u.s. now, they are under flash flood watches and warnings, expecting anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of
5:10 am
rain. the reason here for the concern is going to be they've got high rain rates per hour and that brings the concern for flooding through that stretch, along with gusty winds in through this area. so we're going to keep a close eye on this. of course we've got the storm here on the west coast. now, last night we saw lightning strikes over san francisco. i am starting to detect some more just off the coast and through central california. we're going to zoom this in a bit closer and see where some of the heavier pockets are. this is stretching along 101, santa rosa through petaluma. san rafael got a decent downpour. stretching through concord, moderate pockets through antioch as well. look at this, we've got reds coming into play, moving through south san francisco, and that is likely going to continue, at least for the next couple of hours, because we've still got plenty of moisture just off the coast. so those rain totals right now are going to be especially higher for the north bay and the coastal mountains. san jose was catching a bit of a

rain shadow. we've got a couple pockets that are getting ready to move through along 680, so don't keep your guard down. the santa cruz mountains, highway 17, expect to see gusty winds, especially at higher elevation areas. we'll keep you updated on the timeline and totals. let's check in with mike. >> ended up saving me some time, it looks like a cut and paste issue. we have the same price listed. the ten best prices, reported in santa clara county, they're all in san jose, the best price is right here, goes to the big box, $3.79 at costco on center road. alameda county, $3.79, two locations, mission boulevard and union city. we have another one in hayward. finishing off this hat trick, the same price reported this morning in san mateo, arco on south delaware street, also $3.79. reports are coming in up to a half hour ago. thank you for sharing. on the roadways, we have an

friday really offers good deals. in the past, we found that prices actually get cheaper the closer we get to christmas. well, not this year. a dyson hair dryer we've been tracking on amazon is sold out. an icemaker from walmart, a mixer from macy's, the same price they were on black friday. and a barbie dream house at toys"r"us is more expensive, back to its price of $199. we picked four reasonable gifts out of a billion that you might give. but in our case, this year is the exception, the prices in some cases went up or they're not available, but didn't go down. >> it's a gamble. >> it really is. >> what's the square footage of that dream house? price per square footage. >> well, mortgage rates these days. >> poor ken. well, this morning a bay area nonprofit looking for some help making thousands of tamales

inside, maybe cooking, avoiding the roads, if possible. it's monday, and of course we're back to work. that's going to be a tough deal to kind of get through. let's get right to where the rain is, where it's going and how much of it we've seen. satellite radar, i want to turn your attention to the lightning strikes. there's plenty of instability and moisture in the pacific where we could see isolated thunderstorms through the afternoon. zooming this a bit closer, you can see we've got decent pockets, putting in a little bit of a moderate, heavier downpour look, petaluma, we just had a good line of storms move through novato and san rafael, pushing through concord as well. san francisco right now, we've got a good pocket moving through the south san francisco stretch, down through san mateo, and we've got some pockets right now through oakland and the hayward area, with some heavier rain. san jose is starting to get that light to moderate buildup, and highway 17, please be careful. now, last night we did start to see some of that rain pick up.
5:21 am
last night was not the heaviest of the rain. here is what we've got the last 24 hours. this does not include what is coming down now. a couple hundredths of an inch and higher totals through santa rosa. let's talk wind speed. we're also expecting to see some gusty conditions begin to pick up around 10:00, 11:00, 20, 30 plus miles for some of the higher elevation areas. we're seeing gusty conditions, especially into the north bay and some of the mountain areas. the hour-by-hour outlook, i put the timestamp forward to 8:00 a.m., if you want to follow me there. we still get decent pockets through san rafael, stretching through half moon bay, san jose and morgan hill. we're going to see the rain increase again through tonight. by 11:00 a.m., we do catch a bit of a break. we get the first sign of storms that moves out and look what happens around 1:00, we get another decent rain band that begins to move in stretching from the north bay down through san francisco and half moon bay. then if you look, by about 1:00

a.m., the second storm system is expected to make its way through, and you can see we've got some heavier pockets. notice a little bit more of the bull's-eye over the santa cruz mountains. this is going to be my area for concern, with debris along the roads, highway 17, for that early tuesday morning commute. taking this stretch through tuesday at 5:00 p.m., we catch another break, but we'll keep the instability. we've got plenty of moisture in the pacific and that will keep a chance of scattered showers through wednesday and also through thursday. let's look at the seven-day stretch because we're going to keep the isolated thunderstorms today, breezy conditions overnight into early tuesday morning, another heavy line of rain moves in. rain at times through thursday. notice, we keep some showers to the north, even on friday, and then by the weekend things do begin to clear out. please be careful out there. we're seeing heavier rain and i know mike has several sigalerts. look at the bay bridge toll plaza, lighter traffic, lots of water to deal with.

rain is falling, visibility is tougher. puddling and ponding, especially contra costa county. look at that. we've had a number of flood updates from chp coming through oakland and now there's another alert west 580 at 24. reports a vehicle hit a large puddle just before the crash, that would affect your steering. do be careful out there. we're hoping to get a couple lanes open west 580 at 24. we did get a couple of lanes reopened north 880, the crash at marina boulevard. we have two right lanes blocked here. we still have two lanes blocked westbound 580, a jackknifed big rig happened earlier. it sounds like they're going to be here for a while, so we already have a jam through castro valley out of dublin. >> thanks, mike. coming up next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> he files a claim for his broken phone and somehow winds up with an extra bill for $750. i'm consumernvestigator i
