flooding homes and beaches in south carolina and florida. meteorologist bill karins is tracking the system closely for us but let's start with george solis at philadelphia's international airport. the timing of this system could not be worse with holiday traveling already happening. what do people need to know. >> reporter: airports and airlines happy this that is a rain event not a snow event. many trying to commute encountering some of those torrential and heavy rains this morning. flight aware reporting 2500 delays across the nation's airports. more than 500 cancellations, some people are being barely inconvenienced right now, many happening in the northeast. boston the target area right now as some of this storm system moves into the new england area. still some people that we spoke here at phl earlier this morning they had to combat some of those treacherous terrain here to get

to the airport. take a listen. >> the flood was crazy, we had to take different routes through the city to get here, but nevertheless we're here and we got to check our bags before we miss our flight. >> reporter: silver lining that a lot of that rain has moved out. keeping a close eye on southwest air where they got hit with that penalty from the department of transportation from last year's meltdown. let's turn to meteorologist bill karins, this system is moving out, when will finally dry out and let's talk about the rest of the country this week? >> reporter: what a storm this was, almost a tropical storm, with the high winds we saw, little or no snow or ice. it's still pouring from central new england to northern new england. on the backside, winter is returning to the great lakes with snowy and windy travel. the damaging winds are just about finished.

again, maine into massachusetts, alone, half a million people without power, the rivers we have in minor, moderate and a few in major flood stage. a mudslide in vermont near st. johns bury, all of that snow melt that's accumulating. winds have lowered here. earlier today, we were at 68 mile an hour wind gusts. boston, the airport. now let's head to the west, the showers continue. nothing that's overly organizeded, the rain is kind of hit and miss, that will be the case as we go through tuesday, too. as we head into wednesday the more zaent to heavy rain from san francisco down to los angeles, the next system we'll be talking about across the country. defense secretary lloyd austin and cia director williams burns are meeting with israeli

leaders and officials today they're pushing for a shift in strategy, secretary austin said he discussed the next phase of the war. >> we also have some great thoughts about how to transition from high intensity operations to lower intensity and more surgical operations. >> outrage is also growing inside israel after the israeli military admitted it killed three israeli hostages by mistake on friday. we're live in cairo, egypt, today, what is israel's government sailing about the separate meetings with secretary austin and cia director burns. >> reporter: kate, the israeli defense minister said that he told lloyd austin the u.s. is showing the people of israel what it means to be leader and a partner, sitting, discussing the

most sensitive issues on the agenda. thanked the secretary for its deep commitment to israel's security. they discussed the eventual end to this high-intensity war in gaza and a transitioned to a more limited conflict. for lloyd austin this is delicate balancing about. he supports israel on one hand but he wants them to tone down these attacks in gaza, have more surgical strikes, more intelligence operated attacks, as for the cia chief bill burns he met with the qatari and head of israel's mossad, they discussed the potential new deal to secure the release of israeli hostages. they reiterated that burns' involvement is critical to this process as he was involved in the last one, but today a senior hamas official said all negotiations are off the table

until the hostilities end. >> global trade is being impacted by the ripple effects from this war, help our viewers understand what's going on in the red sea. >> reporter: so, the irani-backed houthis are attacking vessels and shipping lines in the region and they've significantly increase over the last few years, their objective seems to be ratchet up hostilities with maritime tensions in these vital waterways to put israel under pressure, look their attacks are having a tangible effect on commerce, many large shipping companies have suspended the passage of their vessels in the waterway. that's really significant. some 17,000 ships and 10% of global trade passes through there every day, now the ships have to take a massive detour through south africa and the cape of good hope and this is

having an impact of insurance costs and essential goods. >> all right, thank you. we have new details about a crash involving president biden's motorcade and the driver who police said was behind the wheel. that right there happened last night as the president and first lady were leaving their campaign headquarters in wilmington, delaware, you could hear the thud of the crash and see the secret service agents rush alongside a shocked president biden into an suv. aaron gilchrist is following this, first, walk us through what happened here and what do we know about the driver? >> reporter: so, the president's back out and about today, he went to church, did some shopping today, last night while he was leaving dinner when this accident happened, he was looking over toward the traveling news media that were with him, we heard this crash, a

car hitting a secret service vehicle, you saw the president look over stunned as other people were looking and when that car revved its engine that's when you saw secret service agents grab the president and sort of push him closer to the vehicle so he could get in, agents surrounded the sedan with their hands on their guns to figure out who this person was and we understand from the wilmington police department today this driver was involved in an attack and the driver a 46-year-old wilmington man has been charged with driving under the influence, the president was not at risk here, obviously the motorcade continued on to take him home. a very odd occurrence to see. there have been incident where presidential motorcades have been involved in accidents, but nothing with a president standing nearby to witness this himself. >> glad he's okay. aaron, thank you. it's time now for money minute. popular snack is getting

authorities have now released the autopsy report of "friends" star matthew perry, they say he died from acute effects of ketamine. >> ket smooen an anesthetic, sometimes used recreationally but it can also be found illegally, recently it's been studied for its potential to treat mental health disorders including depression. new questions surrounding matthew perry's death as the world remembers the beloved star. >> i want to hug you. >> you hug me. >> all right.

>> reporter: in an autopsy report released friday, the medical examiner determined the 54-year-old died from the acute effects of ketamine, a fact-acting hallucinogen. it gained popularity as a party drug because it causes a euphoric effect. but recently, ketamine has been increasingly offered off label at clinics to treat depression and other mental health disorders and has been studied to treat depression and other mental health disorders and has even been studied to treat alcohol and drug abuse. perry was known for his light hearted on-screen persona. >> i'm not great at the advice. can i interest you in a sarcastic comment? >> reporter: but had a long history with addiction. >> it's a disease that we have, and we don't know that we have it. >> reporter: in his mémoir released last year, the actor wrote about being given ketamine during rehab, ketamine is like being hit in the head with a giant happy shovel. but the hangover was rough and

outweighed the shovel. ketamine was not for me, he wrote. it is unclear how perry obtained the ketamine that led to his death. but according to officials, perry reported to have been receiving therapy for depression and anxiety. the examination found the amount of ketamine in his blood was equivalent to the amount used for general anesthesia. levels the report says too high to be residual from his last clinical treatment. perry was found floating facedown in his hot tub in october. one of the contributing factors authorities also noting that a drug approved by the fda to treat opioid use disorder which people often stay on for years. >> i just want to say that i love you. >> reporter: recently, friends co-star and close friend jennifer aniston told "variety" that perry was getting healthy, adding he wasn't struggling. he was happy. a witness who talked to investigators said perry had been sober for 19 months.

the autopsy found no evidence of elicit drugs in his system. for now, it is unclear if investigators will look into how perry obtained that ketamine, but this news is very difficult for his family and his friends. >> absolutely. thanks for that report. let's bring in dr. john torres. dr. john, part of what's confusing or difficult about this story, ketamine is used in many different ways, not all approved by the fda. >> ketamine used for people who have depression that's resistant to drug treatment. ketamine itself has been around since the 1960s, it was used in surgery and it's a disassociative anesthetic, you disassociate yourself from the

pain. >> so those are the label from the fda, people are also using it offlabel confusingly. >> these clinics are popping up and they're popping up for a couple of different things, one is for addictions, some studies hint toward that. and the other mental health issues depression in particular and ptsd they're looking at that as well in conjunction with therapy. >> the medical examiner said he had an amount of ketamine in e.r. would he have taken that ketamine the same day that he died. >> it gets out of our body within our body ten hours. so, you know we had it from your reporting a week ahead of time a week before he went to clinic

for treatment, a week and half, that would not be in his system at this point. >> totally unclear how he got it. >> that's the big question. >> you mentioned ketamine clinics they're rising in popularity, is this cautionary tale for anyone using ketamine. >> it is. some people when they take ketamine it feels good to them and that's why it's party drug. others have bad experiences and it can have side effects increased blood pressure, coronary issues, in his case he was taking other medications for opioid treatment, those could be complicating factors. you want to be careful. again if you look at this depression-type treatments, it's treatment that's not responding to other treatments. try those first. ketamine should be something later. >> like a next step if you've tried everything else. >> exactly. >> very interesting. dr. torres, thank you for helping us understand it a little bit better. coming up, we've got

this is the fast forward on nbc news daily. well, it is a wet morning for the bay area and you're probably wondering how long this rain's going to be sticking around so here's our meteorologist with the answer in our forecast. >> we started our day with wet roads. we're going to continue to see that throughout the afternoon. expect to see some moments of light to moderate rain. also, the winds will be picking up by this afternoon. 30 plus mile per hour. especially for some of the higher elevation areas. temperaturewise, we're going to be in the 60s but it's also going to feel humid and muggy. a chance for isolated thunderstorms. daytime highs in the mid and upper 60s for the bay area. rain totals, some of the highest totals through wednesday, we'll be up through the north bay, san rafael, also the santa cruz mountains. we could see 3 to 4 inches by the end of the week stretch. that's going to carry us over into the weekend. >> thank you. this morning's commute was pretty rough for a lot of

drivers. the rain and slick roads made for dangerous driving. bob is by 580 in livermore with updates. >> as you can see behind me on 580 in livermore, the roads are much drier than this morning but they are still wet. you will want to watch your speed. we have no reports this morning of any major weather related accidents, but according to chp's online incident logs, there have been a number of spinouts and minor accidents. here's what what man told us after driving from concord to livermore this morning. >> slow down. no one else seems to. you'll start saving lives. >> other people are still -- >> accidents everywhere. left and right. >> some people driving fast. they just don't understand that they can hydro plane and stuff. but yeah, i was going pretty slow. probably 50 on a 65. but it was really bad this morning. >> yeah. >> i could barely see so i had to really slow down.

>> this was the scene last night in oakland. minor flooding on the 880 connecter. eastbound 980. also localized flooding on the city streets as well. and across the bay on the peninsula, lots of rain along highway 101. the rain was on and off all morning but it appears we're in a dry spell for the next several hours but again, those roads are still wet. remember, this is the first big rain of the season so all those oils and fluids that have been setting over on the roads during the summer and warmer months, they're going to come up and possibly make the roads much slicker than they appear. and you also want to remember like that driver said. just because the speed limit is 65 doesn't mean the conditions are safe for that speed. nbc bay area news. >> thank you. and here's some other stories you need to know about today. volunteers are needed to help make food for farm workers this season. also, the oakland zoo is

shutdown but first, thieves almost shut down santa's workshop in the east bay. someone broke into santa's photo shop in walnut creek over the weekend. security believes the break in happened sometime between friday night and saturday morning. workers say the thieves stole $2,000 and two cameras. they did reopen the workshop by saturday afternoon although the thieves are still on the run. this week's storm is causing the oakland zoo to close for the day. this is a heads up for all of you parents. not the first time they've closed due to the storm. last year, it closed for more than a month because of a sinkhole. they are monitoring the conditions day by day but they want visitors to know that if you did have reservations, you will be refunded automatically. a bay area non-profit is looking for help. making thousands of tamalaes for farm workers. they're hoping to hand out 3,000

it's you, with l'orange on top. bottom of the hour now, breaking news out of new york city, actor jonathan majors has been found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. >> jury reaching the verdict on the third day of deliberations, majors was considered a rising star in hollywood before the trial. nbc news entertainment correspondent chloe melas joins us now with the latest. you were in the room for some of this trial, can you remind your viewers about this case and the trial and what kind of

punishment can majors see here. >> it's important to point out here that this trial took place over the course of ten days and criminal court in manhattan, i was there for a few days of testimony from jonathan majors' ex-girlfriend and it's interesting that the jury has a split verdict here. finding him guilty on two out of the four charges. it's unclear what kind of jail time he's going to be facing if he had been convicted on all of these charges, it would have been up to a year in jail and again we've reached out to jonathan majors' legal team to see if they're going to appeal, but what i can tell you is that this all stems from an incident that took place this past spring, in manhattan, where jonathan majors' ex-girlfriend claims that she saw a text message from another woman on her boyfriend's phone, jonathan majors, while they were riding in the back of an suv, she claims she took the phone from

him and then she has alleged throughout this trial and the prosecutors have alleged that that this is when jonathan majors violently assaulted her, a lace ration behind her ear, majors' legal team said that this is an issue of race, had he not been black these charges never would have been brought about. we have yet to hear from majors. >> so, the future for this man, because he was -- he's big actor, on track to become the next big thing, starring role in the marvel universe, what happens now to his acting career, i'm looking at it right here, he's been in so many films. "creed 3." but he had a movie with disney that was shefd. unclear if disney shefd that

project due to these allegations. he's set to star in mariel's next big film that comes out in 2026. this is a massive franchise. lot of money on the line and we have yet to hear from disney as to what their plans are and they were probably waiting to see the outcome of this trial, but now that the jury has reached a split verdict here, it will be interesting to see what these major studios do and what happens to his once-promising career. >> we'll see how it all plays out. chloe, thank you. believe it or not, we're less than one month away from first votes from being cast in 2024 election. nbc news is introducing something today, the deciders, a new project looking at so much the most purple places in the country. in particular we're focusing on voters in seven counties in seven states who could be key to determining who wins the white house. we have a team of nearly 20 journalists following it all. they're stationed in these key

decider battlegrounds around the country. let's begin in dane county, wisconsin, with shaquille brewster. >> reporter: the question is not who will win these young progressive voters but whether or not those young progressive voters will turn out in those dramatic fashions that we're used to seeing. dane county is the state capital of wisconsin, this battleground state and home to the university of wisconsin. turnout here in 2020 was near 90%. turnout here in 2020 was near 90% and this country was crucial to helping joe biden flip this battleground state just three years ago, but right now you look at polling and there's a growing rift between those young voters and the president, the question is to see whether or not this voting group motivated in the past, whether or not they're motivated in 2024. in miami-dade county, one thing we're going to be looking at as part of this reporters

series, islooking at the numbers from 2012 to 2022, we've seen this county change from strongly democratic to now republican gains that we haven't seen since 2002. we'll be looking at the demographics, we know roughly 70% of the people here in the county identify as either hispanic or latino. what has been successful in the past and how are campaigns going to be trying to target the key populations that exist here. the diverse hispanic and latino populations here in miami-dade county. we'll be reporting on that for the deciders throughout 2024. all right, there are more than 3100 counties in america, we're looking at seven over the next year that we think are going to offer some big clues about where the election might end up, here are the seven decider counties. dane county, wisconsin, that's where the university of wisconsin is, massive democratic county. the question is, democratic

enthusiasm there has been off the charts in the trump era, does that continue in 2024. democrats want to have an enthusiasm edge over republicans. grand rapids, traditionally republican, been moving away from trump, if trump is the nominee does he start to win it back? erie county, pennsylvania, only two counties in pennsylvania that went from trump '16 to biden in '20. it's the bellwether in pennsylvania. maricopa, arizona. nevada, where reno is, a bellwether. fast growing, diversifying. atlanta metro area, it's the story of georgia, and miami-dade, big, 77% hispanic population. one that will first out a big clue about the vote right there from miami-dade. >> you'll be seeing a lot more from all the deciders in the

lead up to the decision in 2024. catch their coverage on air, online. this program eveeverywhere. now to landmark decision for the catholic church, the pope says priests can bless same-sex couples, the blessing can only happen under certain circumstances. claudio joins us now from rome. claudio, help us understand what exactly this all means, what's the significance of a blessing first off and what are these new conditions? >> reporter: well, this came out today when the vatican's department for church doctrine published this status document, official document signed by the pope in which it says same sex couples who want to receive a blessing by the catholic church they can now do so under certain circumstances as you said. first of all, the main condition is this blessing should not be seen as an approval of marriage,

should not resemble a marriage, for instance this document lays out the conditions very clearly the blessing can't happen at the same time as a civil union, it also says it can't happen or accompanied by rituals that are linked to marriage, to sacramental marriage, the but even though these conditions this is major shift, a major outrage by the catholic church to the lgbtq-plus community, a couple of years ago, the same vatican office refused to give its blessing to same sex couples because it said you can't bless sins. >> claudio, this blessing can now take place with a lot of limitations, but what has the response been to this announcement? >> reporter: the response has probably negative by the conservative cardinals who were against this move, if you think about it -- this is not exactly

what if at the last minute you realized that you lost your passport it is expired. christopher's 11-year-old son gabrielle. >> we are going to spain, to portugal, to italy, the netherlands and london. >> reporter: when travel picked up after covid, renewals took 10 to 13 weeks to process. now they're up-to-date. >> we had to do a lot of overtime. >> reporter: how much? >> well, thousands of hours per month for an extended period of time. we really were short staffed. as much as we could. >> reporter: the photo requirements can cause delays. >> you got to have a photo that's a specific size. you can't be smiling. there is all kinds of requirements on that. >> reporter: and you like to smile? >> i love to smile. >> reporter: and the new passports have laminated photo pages similar to a credit card to make them even more difficult to counterfeit. >> we consider our passport the golden standard of passports in the world.

>> reporter: rafael gomez and her was were packing to take their two-year-old and five-year-old visit grandma and grandpa in valencia, spain. just hours after their afternoon flight. how did you realize that her passport expired? >> in the worst of ways. we were packing our passports and we literally realized it was expiring next week. so we couldn't come back in with her passport. >> reporter: the passport office rushed mercedes' passport within a few hours. they raced off to try and catch their plane. we're learning new details about the fda's handling of applesauce products contaminated with lead, these three applesauce pouches were recalled back in october. parents were scrambling for months trying to figure out why their kids were getting sick, many didn't connect the dots until the recall came out.

nbc news got several reports on the recall from the fda through a freedom of information act request, what did you learn from them? >> reporter: we learned that many parents were shocked to learn that their child had lead poisoning many months later. we looked at the reports, parents didn't learn that the source of the lead poisoning was possibly linked to the products until november. one child tested positive for lead poisoning in march, not until november she found that the pouch was likely the source. they also found that they weren't able to find the source until the recall. lot of confusion, frustration and alarm. >> what do parents need to know about the recall and should they be avoiding this type of pouch completely or just the cinnamon versions? >> doctors told us signs of lead poison kg be difficult to spot,

you stay out of the way. >> reporter: well, today is your moment. >> it's god's moment. >> reporter: all 32 nfl teams have a chaplain, but the ravens say they are one of a handful that have theirs in house full-time. >> the blessing is being able to be in the building full-time. things that just come up where people need to talk or they want advice. >> reporter: johnny has been with the team for a decade. in addition to scheduled bible studies for different groups like coaches, players and even their significant others, johnny's door is always open for counseling. what are the types of things that the players come to you about? >> they come to me with football pressure, family pressure, relationship issues. life is hard enough. and at the flip side of that, football is hard enough. so when you put those two together, it's just -- it's crazy. >> reporter: johnny makes it easy for players to seek him out when they need him. doing a prayer walk around the training fields at the start of

every practice. >> i pray for the safety for their minds and their hearts to be clear to be able to focus on the task at hand, and they will literally come up and some of them will ask for prayer personally. >> right here on the field? >> yeah. right here as we're going -- as i'm coming around. >> reporter: the same is true on game day when johnny will pray with players individually on the sidelines and collectively as a team in the locker room. >> so, right before we go out to take the field, the last thing we do is we pray as a team. >> reporter: johnny's message resonates with players of faith like lee-time pro bowl defensive back marlin humphrey. >> football comes up occasionally, but it is mainly just life. relationships. even sometimes when it is football, it is more so just how could you have more of a leadership role. >> reporter: as well as former player anthony weaver. >> we're football coaches. we're football players. we assume we're alphas.

nbc bay area responds to a north bay man who needed help getting a company to fulfill a promise. a $750 promise. so he asked chris' team to step in. >> marcus in lake county said his verizon phone stopped working so he filed a phone insurance claim. verizon sent him a replacement. plus, a box to return the old one. he said he did and this tracking e-mail right here that says proof of delivery shows us verizon got it. but then marcus says verizon sent an alert saying it was charging him more than $700 for failing to return the phone. he called verizon. he says a rep confirmed his old phone was delivered. the rep then sent him this e-mail guaranteeing that that
