rain that's hitting the bay area. this morning we've got live team coverage. our ginger conejero saab is in san francisco with a look at the flooding the wet weather is causing on the roads. >> let's get a closer look at the current timeline from the rain. meteorologist vianey arana in for kari this morning. >> the rain totals so far have actually been pretty impressive. we've had a serious deficit so far, so it's nice to see some of those accumulations, but that is becoming problematic. with more rain expected, we're going to continue to see the possible threat of flooding. let's zoom in and you'll notice we do have light scattered activity through mill valley. a bulk of the line of storms that moved in overnight is now trekking east, but we've still got plenty of activity in the pacific. we do still have lighter pockets, light to moderate at times, moving through mountain view right now, along 101, getting ready to move into san jose. if you're going to be traveling through san jose within the next ten minutes, expect to see this

line of showers crash through there, and then in through saratoga we're also expecting to see sierra snow accumulations continue. we've got more of a wintery mix going on here for the sierra, but of course this could become definitely more of an accumulation heading into wednesday night and into early thursday morning. the reason for this is we've got a second storm system lining up to move in tonight, and here is what we can expect, with additional rainfall on top of what we've seen, which i'm going to go into more detail in a few minutes. some of the totals could see upwards of two inches from what we've seen in some spots, including santa cruz. and then we've got the rain shadowed san jose. i'll go into more detail on exactly how much more rain we'll expect in a few minutes. >> thanks, vianey. we continue our weather coverage with "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab live in san francisco. ginger, overnight the city got some pretty heavy downpours. >> reporter: it did, laura. i was just saying it seems like

it eased up a little this morning, but then as soon as i said that, the light rain started feeling like it was getting heavier. good morning to you guys in the studio. while many of us were sleeping, the rains came down in the city. let's take a look at some video of what it looked like in san francisco past midnight. you're seeing the 101 freeway northbound at the transition 80 split, we're also taking a look at the 101, but south of the city, south san francisco saw some more of that flooded highway. chp says lanes had flooding up to 12 inches across some of the lanes. there was also flooding at the intersection of airport boulevard and grand avenue in south san francisco. now, yesterday sfo was under a ground stop for about 90 minutes, but it wasn't because of the rain. it was the wind. there was also bad weather back east, nearly 500 flights were delayed at sfo with ten cancellations, a tough time to get delays right before christmas.

but flying out of oakland or san jose, it was much better. fewer than 50 flights delayed, and just one canceled. sjc had the best flight record of the three airports yesterday, about 40 delays and zero cancellations. we will have more updates on possible delays in the next hour, because the faa already alluding to possibly more delays at sfo later on today, this morning. now, the bay area, from the north bay to the south bay, the east bay into the city, saw pockets of heavy rain throughout the day. i was doing some last-minute shopping yesterday and the rain would stop and start back up again. you've got to watch out for intersections like these. this is bayshore yesterday, right under the freeway. that intersection was under water. it looked a bit better this morning when i drove by. other dangerous conditions had crews scrambling all day long. there was a deadly crash along kirker pass road in concord. kirker pass shut down for hours because of it.

another deadly crash near sunol exit on 680. there was bumper-to-bumper traffic. investigators say a vehicle with eight people inside went off the road and down an embankment. two people there were killed. others were rushed to the hospital. now, first responders hard at work until these rains let up, as are pg&e crews. in san jose, around 18,000 customers lost power for a few hours yesterday. pg&e says the outage is due to an equipment failure and not the weather. they say they have crews in place and a storm outage prediction model that will allow them to respond faster to outages. so a lot to watch out for from pg&e and possible outages, to the roads, which i know we're about to take a look at, marcus and laura. >> we sure will. try to stay dry. thanks, ginger. let's check in with mike right now. flooding surely will be causing some serious issues for drivers everywhere today. >> yeah, that video ginger showed, a lot of that flooding

wasn't completing closing the freeway or surface streets, but flooded drains and blocked by leaves, so many leaves falling around the bay. use caution. on the freeways, stay to the middle where it crests a little better. this morning it was dark and we could see the reflection of the water and the potholes were filled with water, causing the car to pull a little bit. emeryville, lighter traffic, rain on the lens and roadways, and that will be a factor. a very rudimentary radar, we left it on the maps, because it's mostly green for speed sensors. at worst, brake tapping, as you should when the conditions demand that. west 24, we did have a tree down on fish ranch road just off 24, and on 24 a crashed car into the center divide, a couple of lanes were blocked for a short period of time. i'm seeing a lot of crashes with cars either on the right side or left side, the shoulder or a guardrail, perhaps being pulled

his life and the girl's mother in jail. the 5-year-old died early sunday after the car her mother was driving slammed into a tree alongside highway 4 in martinez. the girl's 11-year-old cousin was critically injured. chp is saying the 32-year-old was drunk behind the wheel at the time of that crash. heartbroken relatives yesterday leaving balloons behind at the crash site, saying their family will never be the same. >> she made such a big impact for a small girl. she's always been tiny but full of life, full of love. she had love to give to everyone. >> she's a good mother. life is very beautiful. for her to be a young mother. she don't deserve this. >> chp says she was not properly restrained in her car seat. her mother is facing dui and manslaughter charges. a live look at sfo, where later today airport commissioners take the first step in creating a permanent

honor for the late senator dianne feinstein. the plan calls for renaming the airport's international terminal in her honor. "the new york times" report another icon, willy brown, is leading the effort. commissioners will discuss a plan during their meeting today and a public hearing is already planned for next month. let's take a live look outside right now. our mobile doppler radar is scanning the skies atop of san bruno mountain. meteorologist vianey arana is working hard keeping track of what's going on with this system we're seeing coming through the bay area now. what's going on now? >> we're still seeing sort of the tail end of the first system that moved through late sunday into monday, light to moderate rain. if you look in the pacific, we still have some churning activity. this is the second storm system lining up, expected to make its arrival late overnight into wednesday, and that's when we're going to see the rain rate totals pick up again. the mobile radar is scanning and we've got light, scattered

activity. overnight, heavy pockets moved through. we've got rain moving in through mountain view right now, about to move into san jose, starting to cover portions through there. milpitas as well, half moon bay catching a bit of a break. if i zoom out, you can see the wintery mix through the sierra. i do want to talk about the two-day rain totals so far. so keep in mind this is not including the overnight rain we saw or the rain we're getting right now, but take a look at this. over 2 inches through parts of the north bay, santa rosa, san francisco, nearly an inch and a half through oakland. and even san jose, which is rain shadowed, we've got over half an inch. still more rain expected today, and then a big round of showers expected tomorrow. these are going to continue to add up. i think it's nice to see, because as far as our rain season goes, we're a little behind as far as deficits. coming up, i'm going to talk about how our reservoirs are doing, our rain year, and also the sierra snowpack and what to

expect in the upcoming week and into the weekend in a few minutes. i'm going to send things back to you. >> i want you to look at the screen, don't worry, these prices are higher than you saw yesterday, $3.79 was the price point of the morning. we have lower prices in some spots. we're going to start with contra costa county. i picked different gas stations, differently cities. this is concord, valero on willow pass road at $3.79. available in many cities around the bay. in the south bay, cupertino car wash, the gas, you get the car wash for free on a day like this, that's $3.85 on north de anza boulevard. mill valley, $4.05 at the arco on redwood highway. these are reported on gasbuddy.com. on the roadway, a smooth drive. the green highlighted across the bay, that's where there are damp roads. the blue in the tri-valley where the rain sat around the pleasanton area. you'll find flooding on the

good morning. it is 5:14 right now. we do still have some light rain coming down in san jose. notice the temperatures. it's quite humid and the temperatures are in the 60s. we're going to see a slight dip into the 50s by 6:00 a.m., but then daytime highs will be in the upper 60s and the scattered chance will continue. we'll talk about how much rain we can expect coming up in my full forecast. we're looking at oakland, the roadways are wet here. you see the sparkle and the shine, the glow and the halo effect. we see the building traffic flow, which is not a problem right now. we'll show you where things are shaping up a little stronger over in the east bay and how things are shaping up in the

south bay as well. good morning. very happy tuesday to you. markets moved higher again monday, setting more records. now, the gains weren't huge, but when you're at a record and you add more, that's more records. the fed governor from san francisco really added to the optimism after she indicated she thinks her federal open markets committee will have to cut interest rates soon. she says, we have to be looking forward and making sure we don't give people price stability, but take away jobs. do watch energy prices, though. a lot of oil companies that use the red sea and the suez canal are talking about taking the long way around as iran-backed houthi rebels fire missiles and drones. we'll talk more about that as we talk politics. the commercial real estate company cbre says never before has there been so much empty space in san francisco, telling the san francisco business times there are 31.6 million square

feet empty. jeff bezos' blue origin will launch a shepherd rocket at unmanned. blue origin had an incident last september with an unmanned rocket where something went wrong, and something went right, too. the crew capsule blasted away from the problem as it was designed to do, and returned safely to earth. blue origin plans to try again today. we told you monday apple would stop selling the latest versions of its apple watch after losing a patent case. apple now says the last day of sales of the series 9 and ultra 2 online will be thursday, last day of sales in stores will be christmas eve. an international court has ruled that apple used another company's technology to detect blood oxygen levels without its permission in certain watches. that company says it is willing to sell a license to apple, but apple doesn't seem interested.

previous years, we're definitely a little behind. but the impacts are starting to be felt as we continue to see more accumulation. let's take a look at satellite radar, extending the rain pretty much through the interior. you'll notice we are seeing the majority of heavier pockets that moved through overnight now moving east. let's take a look at what we're seeing now using our storm ranger, scattered activity through mill valley, san francisco is catching a break, very light rain. oakland just saw some rain pass through. it's now moved east. now san jose is starting to get a decent amount of rain coming through mountain view, through milpitas, and around portions of saratoga as well. the sierra snowpack is expected to see anywhere from 2 to 4 inches. i want to talk about your timeline. so notice, i took this timestamp forward to 7:00 a.m., and a lot of the emphasis now remains more in the south bay, actually, through morgan hill, gilroy, parts of the santa cruz mountains, and then a couple of

areas through napa. if you live in oakland or concord, you're going to be okay as far as heavy rain. here is when our next line of storms is really setting up. it was looking like an overnight/early morning, now it looks like it's arriving earlier on wednesday versus late tonight. look at 4:00 a.m. now, i want you to notice the purple and red there, that's the heavy pockets of rain with downpours at times, and look at how the line moves through to about 7:00 a.m. we've got the widespread rain from north to south, really through san jose even. we'll get decent pockets. the monday morning commute was heavy, but this could likely be heavier into wednesday, because of those heavy pockets of rain. now, fast forwarding to about 5:00, we see scattered activity and then it clears out. that rain moves in wednesday, the good news is it does look like that by thursday we're going to see the majority of the rain completely cleared out in time for the weekend. rain totals, over the last two days, some of the highest totals

through santa rosa and through santa cruz, boulder creek over 2 inches, even san jose over 1/2 an inch. the reservoirs, let's take a look at where we stand when it comes to four of our largest reservoirs, about 66% of capacity. trinity lake typically gets lowered for seismic activity and that percentage is seven-day fo like this. we may see scattered activity for thursday, but it looks like that system will clear out in time for friday. saturday and sunday into christmas day, we're going to start out our weekend on a dry note, but still be careful on the roads. let's check in with mike. >> speaking of rain, we're talking about the south bay. you talked about mountain view and the rains toward the san jose area. 101, you can see water on the lens and roadway, kicking up off the cars in front of them, onto the windshields of the following

50s and 60s. we're tapping into subtropical moisture and that's keeping mugginess and humidity. this is the reason we're not getting much in the way of sierra snow. storm ranger has been scanning from san bruno mountain and you can see scattered activity through parts of the north bay. we're catching a bit of a break through san francisco and through the peninsula. then we've got light to moderate pockets of rain through mountain view, milpitas, san jose getting some of that rain. if i give you a wider view, you can see the wintery mix. we're going to talk about the timing of the next storm and of course a look at the extended week ahead. first, those roads. >> san jose is getting rain this second. we have it on the roadways. we'll show you the radar. i have a rudimentary version showing you the traffic sensors. more intense rain coming down 280 toward highway 85. that's the cupertino area. and then in san jose another blob just where there's slowing northbound 101.

light traffic around the bay, for the most part, no major issues. i did circle westbound 580 around lakeshore. there's been a crash that's taking a while to clear. the others have cleared quickly. a lot of spinouts. do use caution on the outer lanes. the rain on the lens shows you the traffic flow is light. outer lanes could get flooding and that's just a word of warning. speaking of issues on the roads, we continue our weather coverage this morning with "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab live in san francisco. >> ginger, overnight we saw a lot of rain across the bay area, but certainly a heavy downpour in san francisco. >> reporter: that's right, marcus and laura. there was a heavy pour-down past midnight last night. it feels like the rain is a bit lighter, kind of like a misty, light rain. you can see the freeway behind us and the roads are still wet, the roads are still slick so far, so a steady flow of

traffic. last night, while many of you were sleeping, the roads looked a little different. this is video past midnight in san francisco, you're seeing 101 northbound at the 80 split, cars slowing down there to pass the ponding that happened on the overpass. now, south san francisco also saw some flooded highways. here is the 101 again, but south of the city. chp says lanes have flooding up to 12 inches across some of its lanes. there was also flooding at the intersection of airport boulevard and grand avenue. in the last half hour, i mentioned flight delays over at sfo. the faa appears to be planning for another ground delay at the airport today, but it won't happen until after 8:00 this morning. now, we do expect official word to come out of sfo in the next hour. we'll bring you that as it comes in. but yesterday sfo was under a ground stop for about 90 minutes, and it wasn't because of the rain, it was the wind

tv news security guard no longer face life in prison without parole. >> bob redell joins us from outside the count hall in dublin where the suspects are expected in court later this morning. critics say the latest decision is another reason why alameda county district attorney pamela price needs to be recalled. >> reporter: correct, that's their opinion. good morning to you, laura and marcus. according to the mercury news, the district attorney here in alameda county, pamela price, has decided to drop special circumstances, allegations of murder during the commission of a robbery, against the two men, mitchell and hale. they've been charged in the murder of kevin nishida, a retired police officer who was providing security for a tv news crew when he was shot and killed back in november of 2021. this means that both men no longer face life in prison without parole. instead, they now face 25 years to life with the possibility of

getting out on parole. the mercury reports the new charging decision might mean the district attorney now believes it was not mitchell who actually pulled the trigger, but rather laron gilbert, who is still a fugitive, wanted in connection with this crime. the nishida family has been critical of the d.a. in recent months, arguing that there are other enhancements she could and should file in this case to ensure the longest possible sentence if the two men are convicted. last night dozens of alameda county residents met in a town hall organized by the grassroots public safety group save alameda county for everyone, which is trying to recall d.a. price because they believe she is soft on crime. here was the organizer after she found out that nishida's suspects no longer face life without parole. >> it's exactly what we're talking about. you've got to be held accountable for your actions. we're not talking about throwing them away and locking up the key, but they've got to be held

accountable. >> reporter: d.a. price released a statement defending her decision to drop the enhancements that could have meant life without parole. quote, we believe there's evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt to charge both defendants, shadihia mitchell and hershel, which carries a 25 years to life sentences, as well as arming enhancements. these are serious charges and reflect my commitment to punish those who come to alameda county to inflict harm on our community. price defended her progressive prosecution style in her own town hall over the weekend and reminded people why she ran for office. >> to hold people accountable without destroying our community, without decimating black and brown families because of the racism that has infected the criminal justice system. >> reporter: those trying to

recall d.a. price feel confident that they will get and exceed the 93,000 signatures needed after the first of the year to get the recall on the ballot, and back here at the east county hall of justice in dublin, those two suspects are expected in court later this morning at 9:00. reporting live in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we'll continue to follow it, bob, thank you. flu cases are increasing in california and more than a dozen other states, in part because vaccination rates are lagging, and that which could make holiday travel tricky this year. look at the cdc's most recent flu activity map. california in the red, indicating high activity. most of the states from the southwest to the southeast are in a similar surge. according to the california department of public health, flu hospitalizations were up 40% last week. now, covid hospitalizations were up more than 17%. rsv activity is elevated as well. now, according to both the cdc

charity's community center at turk street near market. the distribution is up 30% from last year. each child will receive two large gifts as part of the distribution. each family will also get a $50 food gift card. recipients must have pre registered in order to participate. 5:41 right now. wet roads out there. this is at the bay bridge toll plaza. more rain expected throughout the morning. our meteorologist, vianey arana, is tracking that. you're also tracking the sierra snowpack. >> that's one of the biggest questions from viewers, rain and the storm, does it mean we're getting snow? i'll get to that in a second. we are seeing scattered light activity. we have a decent amount of light to moderate rainfall in mountain view and san jose, saratoga, and of course there goes the wintery mix. this is a subtropical system, so it is a little warmer, which means we haven't seen as much snow. if i take this through december 20th, notice 3 to 4 inches, so

not much in the way of snow. and our peaks right now definitely haven't seen anything compared to what we saw last year around this time. so the north is about 31%, central 28%. what does this mean statewide? just to give you an idea for comparison purposes, today we're at about 25% of statewide, last year at this time we were at 182% of that sierra snowpack statewide because we had a series of really cold systems that pushed through, bringing record snowfall to the sierra. you can see there the average depth right now is a little over an inch and the average last year around this time was around 17 inches. so we're definitely a little behind compared to last year, but also last year was considered more of an extreme event. we'll have to see how the remainder of this year plays out and the water rain year as well. let's get a check of the roads. >> we're looking at a weird pattern at the bay bridge. the backup is forming, but it's

not because of the metering lights. over here on the auxiliary toll plaza on the right side there was slowing. things have cleared up here but they're rippled to the over-crossing. the hov lanes were backed up for a couple of second as well. there may have been something going on at the toll gates themselves. everything is moving fine now. we don't have a major problem. there's a disabled vehicle reported somewhere across the span and that might be where they slowed things down. i'll let you know if there's a problem. there's no more problem for westbound 580 and slowing cleared around lakeshore. mild slowing around golden gate fields, where we typically see that schedule going on. this evening we have scheduled a game for the warriors tonight, so we need more fans to root for the warriors. we can get through this slump, you guys. we've got a couple of wins under our belts. the game just off the 280 extension in san francisco. under the water, the posey tube will be closed overnight. last time it rained they rescheduled it for today.

the southern border. changes that would not be popular, though, with the liberal side of his party, particularly new restrictions on who can claim asylum and from what. it's pretty clear, though, biden has not a lot to lose. his approval rating is 34% in the latest university poll, low marks for inflation and immigration. inflation is under control. americans say they're worried about the economy, but they still spend and act like they're not worried. the crisis on the border, those numbers are very real. arizona's governor sending the state's guard, this is video of eagle pass in texas that's been such a problem. the texas governor just signed a bill that would allow local texas law enforcement to arrest people who cross the border. there are big constitutional questions raised. can a state law deal with what is fundamentally a federal issue? the law makes it a state crime to enter texas illegally.

since they started tracking. >> you all are so thoughtful. that's what it is. >> never mind my new jacket. >> it looks very nice. >> i'm just kidding. let's get to the forecast. we need a trench coat today. >> i think you'll be able to leave it aside at some point but then need it again tonight. so definitely keep that in mind. currently temperatures in the 60s and 50s. look at oakland, 58 degrees, walnut creek 59, san francisco 61. wind speeds are generally light. we are seeing areas of fog developing, especially through parts of the north bay. notice santa rosa, stretching through parts of san francisco, and then here it is, that line of rain that really moved through late overnight. san jose is still getting some of that rain coming down right now. and then expect for that to remain scattered and light at times through the afternoon.

i want to show you where we're at as far as rain totals go for the past two days because they're decent. through parts of santa rosa, we saw over 2 inches of rain, mill valley near 2 inches, even in san francisco we're talking about 1 1/2. typically the rain shadowed san jose, a little over 1/2 an inch, and expect to see rain totals continue to accumulate, especially with the next storm that moves in. i put the timestamp forward by about an hour. by 7:00 a.m., a lot of pockets for the south bay, including morgan hill and gilroy. then it starts clearing out of the south bay. san francisco, you'll catch a break, half moon bay will catch a break. then we become quite scattered through the afternoon, very light pockets. for the most part, no major accumulation. here it is, this is our next storm that's already lining up. if you look at the red and purple hue colors, if this holds up heading into the overnight/early morning, we could see heavy downpours at times. by 5:00, 6:00, 7:00, you'll

notice we start to see that move in heading through north and south, and then it just starts to trek a little further east. by 5:00 p.m., expect to see a majority of rain almost completely cleared out, but it does line up, unfortunately, at 6:00 a.m. just in time for that morning commute, yet again. temperature-wise, we're going to be in the 60s again, through san jose 66 degrees, a high of 64 in fremont, and look at your seven-day forecast. we've got the second storm system that moves in in the early morning hours on wednesday. i know we were monitoring the possibility of some rain into early thursday morning. it looks like that's going to sort of linger, and it's going to stay that way. that's great news for the weekend. keep this mind, with the next system, the national weather service has said that we're going to be looking out for streams and creeks. no concerns of them going over the flood stages, but there could be some nuisance flooding, right around the creek areas, some of those close parking lots, roadways, if your back

yard is close to a stream, you could see high water tonight and into tomorrow because of accumulation and because we've already seen a decent amount of rain. mike is keeping a close eye on traffic. >> as the kids get close to the stream, there's mud that slides down. that's not good for the shoes. on the roadways, the rain is not great for visibility. it's on the roadway. you can see the water kicking up and you can see the traffic is starting to break up a bit. the first slowing eases up. there's a light volume around the bay. wet roadways, puddling and ponding, highway 9, 35, watch bear creek road. i put the radar back on, and we see the rain concentrated to the tri-valley where we have puddling and ponding reported. watch the niles area, the windy roadway. no reports of any slides. a light build to traffic. there's oakland and the bay bridge toll plaza also has a backup just built over the last few minutes. >> thanks, mike. happening now, that rain is

helping increase the amount of salmon in north bay creeks. the marin ij reports the amount of rain has resulted in the slow arrival of adult fish at the lagunitas creek to lay eggs. they say after this rain, there will likely be an increase this week. despite the slow start, researchers expect to see an average number of salmon returning. it is a busy and wet morning across the bay area. ahead at 6:00, we're tracking overnight freeway flooding in san francisco. plus, concerns over delays at the airport yesterday ahead of the holidays. an update on where things stand this morning. a lot more news ahead.
