for a beloved bay area lawmaker. this is "today in the bay." it's tuesday morning and it's time to get your day started. thanks for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. a soggy start to our tuesday. let's get to the microclimate weather alert this morning. we've got live team coverage. ginger conejero saab is in san francisco with details on some overnight flooding. >> first, let's get things started with meteorologist vianey arana, tracking what we can expect today. how are things looking? >> nice to see ginger catch ago break from the heavy rain. she's getting some light scattered activity. i know it's going to be rough out there. shout-out to you, ginger, for that. san francisco, as i mentioned, we are catching a break. our doppler storm ranger has been scanning and the line of showers still pushing through parts of concord, in through milpitas, mountain view, san jose, saratoga. so that means if you're going to be traveling along highway 101, expect to see some moments of moderate to heavy downpours at
6:02 am
times. now, this storm system will continue to track east, but we're going to see pockets of scattered activity, along with a chance for isolated thunderstorms. we saw lightning on monday in san francisco, we're not going to rule that out because of the instability in the atmosphere. we're starting to see fog and low clouds forming through parts of the north bay. you might encounter some limited visibility around the coastline as well. please be mindful of that. we're going to be in the 50s, so it's not really a cold system, which is bringing the humid feeling, the mugginess through pretty much all of the bay area, from san jose through walnut creek and through san francisco. an update on the timeline coming up. we continue our weather coverage this morning. if you're headed out for a flight this morning, be ready for some possible delays once again. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live for us in san francisco at sfo. let's talk about sfo, because i know the weather yesterday impacted those flights there. does it look like we're going to see the same today? >> reporter: well, marcus,
6:03 am
laura, vianey was on point, we are seeing a lighter rain right now. it's kind of like a misty light rain. you might not think that it might have the same impact as it did yesterday. but the faa website is already listing sfo for a probable ground stop for a delay for today. it is not listed until 8:00 this morning. we will expect more details on that planned delay within the hour or possibly just a little afterwards. but yesterday sfo had a ground stop for 90 minutes, impacting hundreds of flights. now, it wasn't because of the rain, it was the wind that was the issue there. there was also bad weather back east, nearly 500 flights were delayed at sfo, with ten cancellations. a tough time at the airport, but it seemed like it was easier to fly out of oakland or san jose, fewer than 50 flights were delayed and just one canceled at oakland, sjc had the best record of the three airports yesterday, about 40 delays with zero
6:04 am
cancellations. while many of us were sleeping, the rains did come down in san francisco. you're seeing what it looked like past midnight in the city. this is the 101 freeway northbound at the 80 split. cars, you can see, slowing down to pass the ponding on that overpass. that tends to happen on the freeways, especially on the side. south san francisco also saw some of those flooded freeways. here is the 101 still, south of the city. chp says lanes had flooding up to 12 inches across some of its lanes. there was also flooding at the intersection of airport boulevard and grand avenue. dangerous conditions had crews scrambling yesterday all day long. there was a deadly crash along kirker pass road. kirker pass road shut down for hours because of it. another deadly crash near the sunol exit on 680, bumper-to-bumper traffic because of that crash.
6:05 am
investigators say a vehicle with eight people inside went off the road and down an embankment. two people were killed in that crash. others rushed to the hospital. you know, you can see that the roads behind us, you're actually seeing that's the 80 west right after the bay bridge, coming into the city. the roads are wet and slick this morning, a little bit of a break from the heavy downpour, but we're really hoping that we don't see the impact of the weather on the roads as we did yesterday. >> certainly not. ginger, thank you for that update. we want to take a look at the roads with mike. that flooding surely causing some problems for a lot of drivers. >> this is not major flooding like full closures, but as ginger's video showed, a lot of standing water. we're looking at live pictures from our camera in san jose. north 101, water on the lens and you can see water kicking up behind the vehicles. we talk about this, even if it's not actively raining, that will be a factor. the radar, that's on top of our
6:06 am
traffic maps here, you see that the active rain is still coming through the south bay, so that would be a factor on the live shot. that's why we're seeing 101 show slowing, 87 with slowing in the southbound direction, and 280 also slowing between cupertino and mountain view. that stretch for both freeways getting active rain. here there's a continued problem on northbound 880, three lanes are blocked. no major injuries, from what i understand. a little trouble clearing that from the roadway. that is the biggest issue for the south bay. the rain does extend through fremont, up and toward sunol, more rain as the commute builds. 680 does build a bit. lighter traffic around the bay. as it extends toward contra costa county, we're doing all right for 680 out of diablo. the san mateo bridge is seeing no slowing on the sensors, but you do need to slow dawn because of slick conditions and lower visibility at times. back to you. >> thanks, mike. we have a lot of ways to get

republicans want tougher immigration policies in exchange. >> senate republicans will not make up or show up late to the table by waiving our responsibility to carefully negotiate and review any agreement before voting on it. >> but we must succeed. democrats remain committed to working with our republican counterparts to reach an agreement. >> reporter: there's mounting pressure on congress to act and for israel to bring remaining hostages home safely. in washington, brie jackson, nbc news. a live look this morning at sfo. later today airport commissioners take a first step in creating a permanent honor for the late senator dianne feinstein. that plan calls for renaming the airport's international terminal in her honor. we're behind on our water rain year. i have a good feeling this is just a beginning, and of course we like to see beneficial rain. when we start seeing too much at once, things can get tricky. satellite radar is showing us what's in the pacific, in addition to what moved through in the early morning showers. this is our next storm system lining up. it is a bit of a cut-off, so this is expected to not only impact us in the bay area but extend through central and through l.a. as well. so be mindful of the grapevine commute, especially into the wednesday, wednesday evening hour. now, fog and low clouds, let's talk about this line of showers that move through. notice, we're pretty much catching a mini break with san francisco, the peninsula and coast. we are seeing areas of low clouds and fogs. san jose catching rain as well. if you look at the hour-by-hour outlook, tuesday by about 8:00 a.m., i've put the timestamp forward by two hours, we see the majority of rain east, a couple of scattered activity areas
6:20 am
through san rafael. gilroy expected to see a couple of pockets. then we catch a break pretty much through the afternoon. a bit of instability, so we could see a lightning strike or two. look at this, wednesday morning, this line is really setting up to have a potential of some pretty decent downpours right in the middle of the morning commute, so between 5:00 and 7:00 is when we see the line begin to move through. and then notice by about 8:00 a.m. it still lingers and it isn't until 11:00, 12:00, we'll start to see scattered activity. the morning commute is going to involve moderate to heavy rain. san francisco, seven-day forecast, we're going to keep the rain through wednesday. the outlook is expecting to see a rise in streams and creeks because of the next storm system, but we're not expecting the flood stage. we've seen some problematic roadways get clogged, drains. how are the roads doing? >> they're doing all right. watch those local roads.
6:21 am
you're talking about that and we're talking about drains being plugged because of the leaves that fell in many neighborhoods. that was a factor when i was driving around. we're looking toward the bay bridge, we've sorted out to the typical expected backup. the main lanes, hov, a big advantage. wet roadways but not active rain, not so much here at the toll plaza. you will find that around the bay. with the same pattern we typically see on a tuesday, but lighter volume, so not as much slowing. highway 37, highway 4, pretty mild. the green highlighting, damp roadways. wet roadways, some puddling and ponding. watch 84 through the windy section. north 88 at the alameda, there's a crash blocking a couple of lanes. >> thanks, mike. it's been a difficult past few days in our newsroom because we unexpectedly lost a family member. >> his name was jeremy martin and he was a much loved part of our production team. jeremy brought a bright light to our newsroom.
