it was a shocker. tough loss. congratulations, seattle. meanwhile, check out the scene in iceland overnight. a spectacular volcanic eruption. the lava expected to flow anywhere from a week to ten days. full report just ahead. >> we'll start with that severe weather. parts of the west coast under flood watches today. here on the east coast, a huge clean up is under way after that massive storm. it stretched all the way from florida to maine. >> we have a live look in paterson, new jersey, this morning, from the falls are still overflowing. a lot of customers across new england still without power. and of course, these storms are playing out with the holiday travel rush already under way. the busiest days are expected to be thursday and friday. all right. we'll get to al's forecast in just a moment. but first, nbc's emilie ikeda joins us from newark airport. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. fortunately we're seeing some improvement from yesterday's thousands of flight disruptions. now that the powerful storm has made its way off the east coast.

still, officials are urging people to be patient and cautious when navigating the aftermath of downed trees, power lines, flooding amid a hectic start to the holiday rush. >> this morning, millions of americans still dealing with the impacts of a deadly winter wallop. the risk of flooding high in communities near swollen rivers across the northeast. the region battered by torrential rain monday that stranded drivers and left many in need of rescue. >> i got stranded and the police came and the fire department came. >> reporter: paterson, new jersey, under water and a state of emergency. officials in vermont, where some neighborhoods had to be evacuated, now beginning to survey the damage from extensive flooding. >> stay off the roads, if you can. >> reporter: whipping winds also packing a punch with gusts topping 60 miles an hour in seven states. at least two people died in storm-related accidents. the december deluge snarling travel, too, on the roads and the runways. one week out from christmas. >> floods was crazy.

we had to take different routes through the city to get here. >> reporter: travellers hoping monday's 560-plus flight cancellations and more than 5,000 delays won't spill over into the rest of what's expected to be a record week for air travel. >> instead of going from charlotte, north carolina, to florida, we're going to dallas, texas, and then to florida. >> reporter: to help avoid air travel headaches, arrive at the airport at least two hours early. if possible, avoid checking a bag in case of delays. many flights will be full, so have a backup plan if yours is cancelled. and download your airline's app ahead of time for the fastest communication. and as always, pack your patience as bad weather complicates the start of the holiday travel crush. and while most of the country won't see a white christmas, the unseasonably warm temperatures forecasted for the holiday weekend should be good news for travelers. the rush will ramp up on thursday with tens of millions of people expected to take flight and hit the roads for the holiday. savannah and hoda.

>> all right, thank you, emilie ikeda at new york. thanks. good morning, guys. and good morning to you. so, we do have winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories from western new york all the way down into west virginia. remnants of that storm bringing lake-effect snow. be another 1 to 3 inches maybe today and that will be that. but we are looking back out to the west. 11 million people impacted between los angeles to the south. flood watches may be upgraded as this system starts to push in. it's going to be an atmospheric river bringing a lot of heavy rain this time to central and southern california, from los angeles to santa barbara, foothills and the mountains could see 4 to 8 inches of rain. and because of some of burn scar areas, there could be mud slides and flooding. 1 to 3 inches up to san francisco. and in the sierra, upwards of 24 inches of snow. above 9,000 feet. now, friday, that big travel day, east coast looks great. plenty of sunshine.

mild through the great lakes. the pacific northwest, rain and snow. down through the southwest, that's where we're looking at airport delays possibly on friday for phoenix, los angeles, las vegas some slowdown, san francisco. but as you come to the east, detroit, chicago, dallas, houston there are some showers. we may see slowdowns there, but nothing too bad and all green along the east coast for friday. so, guys, things looking good for much of the country out in the southwest, unusual for this time of year to be looking at some airport delays there. >> all right, cool. thank you, al. we'll check back in just a bit. let's move to a massive breaking news overnight. a massive volcanic eruption in iceland creating stunning images like these. it comes after weeks of intense seismic activity. it prompted evacuations and even shut down the country's most iconic lagoon. nbc's molly hunter joins us now from london with more. hey, molly, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. the pictures are just unbelievable. the good news right now, icelandic officials are saying

the eruption is not currently life-threatening. it could last, though, anywhere from a week to ten days. but once that molten hot lava starts running and starts moving, it becomes impossible to stop. this morning, stunning aerial images from southwestern iceland capturing a late night eruption spewing searing hot lava. from volcanic fissures. coming after weeks of anticipation and earthquaking seismic activity. icelandic officials say the eruptions brought on by a swarm of earthquakes monday night, beginning northeast of grindvick, a fishing village where a state of emergency was declared last month. the entire population of 4,000 people evacuated as a precaution. it is the fourth volcanic eruption in two years and the largest so far, with an initial fissure opening spanning 3 miles and lava shooting over some 300 feet into the air. >> it is just fascinating to see just nature in action. i just -- it's just like something from a movie.

>> reporter: the icelandic coast guard surveying the area overnight in an effort to confirm the eruption's exact size and location. passengers at one of iceland's main airport just 16 miles away reacting. >> as soon as we know anything, we will let you know. >> reporter: authorities have raised the country's aviation alert level because volcanic ash can pose a risk to engines on passenger planes. something that happened when another volcano erupted in 2010, creating an ash cloud that grounded air travel in europe for more than a week. monday's eruption, follows weeks the seismic activity spurred thousands of earthquakes, prompting the closure of the blue lagoon. now officials are stressing vigilance and caution as the region waits on mother nature to run its course. >> now big picture eruptions are unpredictable, of course. icelandic officials say those lava faunts that were hundreds

of feet overnight are down to 100 feet. that's good news. airport officials say there's no disruption right now so flight schedules are running on time and that means no disruptions at this time throughout europe. hoda? >> all right, molly hunter for us there in london. molly, thank you. also this morning negotiations are unfolding in the middle east to reach a new cease fire in israel's war against hamas and the potential release of more hostages in exchange for it. u.s. officials are taking a larger role in those talks. we're hearing from those families of the three hostages who were accidentally killed by israeli forces. nbc's hallie jackson is in tell avooef for us. hallie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah. good morning to you. just this morning, hamas says it fired off another barrage of missiles toward tel aviv here. the first time we heard sirens in this area in more than a week. this is a city that has seen -- put pressure on the israeli government to get to some kind of a cease fire and get those hostages home. but a national security officials from the u.s. is appearing to temper expectations suggesting that a deal does not

seem imminent at this point. that's as the defense secretary is in the region emphasizing the israeli need to protect civilians in gaza. >> reporter: this morning, the u.s. again encouraging israel to work to prevent harm in gaza, with defense secretary lloyd austin in tel aviv. >> protecting palestinian civilians in gaza is both a moral duty and a strategic imperative. >> reporter: pressure growing for another deal to release more hostages held captive in gaza as the israeli military pledges to bring home three elderly men, seen in new propaganda video released by hamas, recorded under duress. it comes as the humanitarian crisis in the gaza strip is getting worse with a grim milestone approaching. nearly 20,000 people killed there. according to the hamas-run health ministry. the israelis say hamas is using civilians there as human shields. inside israel, anger building after the death of three israeli hostages killed by their own

military even after holding up a white flag. samer talalka, alon shamriz, yotam haim. avi tells us he recognized his son's handwriting on the signs the hostages hung calling for help. what is your message to the government? >> you murdered my son twice. you let the hamas take my son on october 7th, and you killed my son on december 14th. they are not our leaders. they're thinking only of themselves. >> reporter: at the southern israel home of a man also killed by the idf, his mother greets visitors, including an israeli politician. we can only ask for your forgiveness,. quietly, angrily she speaks, telling him, i will not forgive anyone because these words came late, she says. >> hallie, tensions continue to be high all across the region.

we have seen those attacks on ships in the red sea. and how are u.s. forces responding to those provocations? >> reporter: yeah. we're getting new information from defense officials this morning. some numbers suggesting that iran-backed houthis initiated 100 attacks against ships in the red sea. this is why they are rolling out a new initiative to combat that aggression after multiple major shipping companies paused operations in that area in the red sea. u.s. ships are in the region but it is not likely it will escort every commercial ship through. it is more likely to be a zone defense, if you will. that's coming, of course, as defense officials warn of the global economic impact if those commercial vessels are not able to get through. savannah. >> hallie, thank you very much. 7:13. craig joins the table. a big development down south. >> significant, indeed. good morning, savannah and hoda. good morning to you as well. the governor of texas, greg abbott, signing a new law that allows police to arrest migrants

who enter that state illegally. the move likely setting up a showdown with the biden administration. nbc's morgan chesky joins with us more from the law and the reaction to it? >> reporter: yeah, craig. good morning. this law would enact significant changes starting with the fact it would not just be breaking a federal law if you cross the border illegally, you would be breaking a state law if you cross anywhere except those legal ports of entry and empower judges with the ability to expel migrants back to their countries of origin or face prosecution and gives state authorities as you mentioned, police officers, state troopers and sheriff's deputies, it gives them the chance to arrest migrants for crossing illegally. now, we have heard from texas governor greg abbott who says this is a necessary tool in order to slow down this surge of migrants coming across the border in record numbers. but the white house overnight calling this law extreme, saying

it will make texas communities less safe and that it is solely the responsibility of the federal government to enact immigration laws. now, there is some legal pushback that is anticipated, starting with civil rights groups who say that this law is unconstitutional and they do plan to sue. we do know that congressional democrats are also leaning on the justice department to take action. and, of course, this all sets up a potential showdown between the biden administration and the state of texas, very similar to what we've seen. in fact, in recent weeks with a judge ruling against that 1,000 foot long border buoy installed by the state of texas at the request of texas governor greg abbott. that, of course, lost its case in court. but texas governor greg abbott says that he is confident his law will stand. and it's currently set to take effect in march. craig? >> morgan chesky for us there in dallas. morgan, thank you. let's move now to the nfl.

seen at the intersections of airport boulevard and grand avenue. a live look at sfo this morning. that's where we just got word that there will be another ground delay that begins at 9:00 this morning. sfo saying incoming flights will have an average delay of about an hour, up to three hours. today's ground delay is due to foggy conditions and it is expected to last until 10:00 tonight. yesterday a similar scene played out at sfo due to wind. kind of a soggy week. vianey arana is in for kari this morning. >> we are seeing the winds taper down, but as you saw, the fog is starting to develop. we've got moisture and instability, so you're going to notice limited visibility around the coastline. temperature-wise, we're in the 50s. we've got for the most part dry conditions in the skies, but the cloudiness means there's more rain on the way. take a look at this. you can see a stretch of fog through san francisco and then, of course, through the coastline and the peninsula. expect to keep that for the

>> it was number seven for seven seconds. now it's nowhere to be found thank you for plugging that. we have a lot to get to in this hatch hour. a closely-watched case in idaho. >> a judge has denied a request from the man accused of murdering four university of idaho students. dropping charges against him >> nbc senior legal correspondent laura jarrett here with details laura, good morning. >> good morning, guys. this case has been full of delays and detours from the very beginning. now with this latest decision, from the judge finally in, the victims' families want to see this case come to trial. >> reporter: this morning, the case against bryan kohberger inching closer to trial. the judge overseeing the case denying attempts by kohberger's legal team to get the criminal charges against him thrown out the judge finding his lawyers failed to challenge the indictment on grounds of juror bias, lack of sufficient evidence or prosecutorial misconduct, adding kohberger was indicted by an impartial grand jury

>> this argument really does -- is fighting against some case law. >> reporter: the judge also rejecting a second defense motion that claimed prosecutors wrongly used a lower standard of proof when instructing the grand jury calling the arguments, quote, interesting and creative but ultimately unpersuasive. it's been more than a year since prosecutors entered kohberger entered this off campus house and fatally stabbed four college students from the university of idaho, ethan chapin, madison mogen, xana kernodle, and kaylee goncalves. authorities say they found bryan kohberger's dna on a knife case recovered from one of the beds the actual murder weapon never found. the state has said it's seeking the death penalty. the judge entered a not guilty plea on kohberger's behalf in may. the delay in getting this case to trial not unusual but a lawyer for the families says it's taking an emotional toll. >> it's tormenting

you know, you want to have at least a trial date set for the family because it is a time and a date where you can try to move past this kind of monkey that's setting out there on your back >> reporter: the judge's ruling comes after the university announced last week it will soon demolish the house where the murders took place. the families of the victims worry, that would be premature before trial >> the whole family is surprised. not only they will be demoing the house, but also the fact it's happening within two weeks. you know, three days after christmas. >> so what do you expect the defense strategy to be now going forward? >> for the defense, their only hope at this point, guys, is to try to exclude the evidence of that dna thumbprint on the knife sheath, the one found near the victim's bed if your his defense lawyer, you want to do everything you can to make sure the jury doesn't hear about that short of that, really, remember, this is a death penalty case sometimes if you see the evidence is going one way, your hope is to try to make sure he doesn't get the death penalty,

boys, ford and duke that are now almost six months old. the whole family is here with us before we chat, we want to take a look at their journey, filled with loss, but also, as you can see, incredible joy. ryan and emma kelly always dreamed of becoming parents. >> i always joked that we talked about kids before we talked about marriage. >> from the moment they got married in 2021, the indianapolis colts center and his wife knew they wanted to start a family together. just months later, emma discovered she was pregnant. >> to actually look down and see a little onesie with your name on it, there was nothing better. it was so surreal. >> the kellys say the pregnancy felt like a fairly tale especially when they found out inside the colts stadium they were having a baby girl. >> three, two, one >> oh, i knew it >> it's still to this day one of the happiest days of my whole life. >> not long after that perfect moment when emma was 19 weeks pregnant she suddenly felt a difference in her baby's movements.

boys ford and duke with us good morning oh, what a journey obviously, there is a happy ending here, but there is still tears when you think about mary kate and everything you have gone through i mean, how have you -- how have you kind of dealt with all of this and made sense of it in your mind? >> i feel like it's easy to get caught in the why me why did we lose our daughter why couldn't we get pregnant for so long? that's all we wanted and then why did we have to go through what we went through with our boys, having them like an entire trimester early. but all that matters is they're here right now and perspective is everything. we have been through a lot, but we have each other we have our boys, and we have our girl from above. so as long as you can keep all that in perspective, it makes all of it survivable. >> when you were -- when you found out you were pregnant with twins, it was such a beautiful moment and then to know that the twins came early, and i know that part

of what is so important is just holding your babies right away, and you had to wait for that what was it like when you finally actually had the opportunity to feel them on your chest? >> i mean, it was -- it is so many ups and downs in the nicu the battles they faced from day one, i think, were so steep. and every moment of every day, they just did so much better, you know they conquered everything. and, so, it took us a couple weeks to hold them finally, once you hold them, they're so small you always dreamed of this moment and coming full circle from helding our daughter for the last time and the first time to holding these guys knowing they will only be one of millions, you know, is amazing >> i don't know if our camera can capture this okay he's looking at me he was staring at his daddy while he was talking he couldn't take his eyes off him. hello. hello. so what's it been like they're home now i mean, this is what you dreamed of and the dream is here times two.

>> oh, it's chaos. it's chaos we're like already in a man to man coverage it's difficult, but the most amazing difficult. we dreamed of this that's the other thing we talk about perspective. everything it took to get here we prayed so hard. there were so many nights i cried. months, actually, almost a year of crying and praying for them everything is different on this side of the fence when you have gone through what we have gone through and worked so hard to get these boys here. the sleepless nights when they're screaming at the same time and there is only one of you, it's all worth it. >> you talk about something very important is the grieving process that you went through. i think that's important to touch upon because everybody grieves differently. you grieve differently than your husband when you lost your little girl. but, yet, you both had feelings that were similar. >> oh, yeah. so i think the most important thing that ryan and i learned in this for all grief is that you do not grieve the same and we made that mistake early

on, was i need to express my emotions i'm a crier no matter what so in those early days of losing our daughter, you know, i -- the tears wouldn't stop. and he kind of held it i think he felt like he had to be the man of the family, the protector and he had to hold it together so the sooner that you learn that you grieve differently, you need to respect that for each other, the easier it is. that's our biggest advice is just respect each other's grief and whatever you are feeling is valid, each of you. >> well, we're so happy for this happy ending, this long journey. >> they're both asleep >> we timed it perfectly >> how you feel about two crazy ladies holding your babies because we have a gift for you, actually here who am i taking? >> duke. come here, buddy >> okay, duke. don't cry. >> hoda and i love babies. >> so much >> when we heard you were coming, we're like, there is two. we can each have one to hold and dylan has a little gift for you guys i don't think you have to open it now some baby stuff.

this character >> so my mother -- there is she is >> beautiful. >> my mother was a teen during the african war in nigeria, and they had to survive during it. and she had told me a couple of stories about what they had been through. and i guess i -- when i read the script, she came to mind because i can't imagine what it would have been like to have to navigate what that was while trying to take care of her siblings and trying to stay safe and moving on from place to place and trying to find a home and leaving it and having to come back. and i just realized that every individual that is going through something is more than the sum of their parts they're more than the experiences that they have been through. they're more than the circumstances. they have a life. >> you have such a range i'm just looking at you and thinking about all the roles yo. have played, including this one.
