tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  December 22, 2023 5:00am-6:01am PST

5:00 am
right now at 5:00, the holiday weekend is upon us. we are tracking the travel rush on the roads and in the skies, for people getting an early
5:01 am
start on them reaching their weekend destinations. party crackdown is now going into its third year, this time they're doing things just a little bit different, and that could impact some holiday plans. also, back in court for two men charged in the murder of a decorated former police officer who was protecting a television news crew as security. the controversial move prosecutors are expected to make in the courtroom as soon as today. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks so much for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get to those headlines in just a moment. first, we are definitely soaking in this holiday spirit. check this out, this winter wonderland right here in the bay area. this is a spot known for its holiday displays. bob redell is going to show us around in about 15 minutes, so stick around for that. he's going to talk to the man
5:02 am
known for enlightening people about where to view the best neighborhood light shows. >> and why pg&e loves them so much. let's get a look at the forecast. cinthia pimentel is in for kari. >> another cold start. i want you to turn down the lights if you are driving on the roadways right now or plan to in the next couple of minutes. we are waking up under dense fog. dense fog advisory until at least 10:00 this morning, the worst of it in our typical spots. let's take a look at some of the values that are down to less than half a mile in parts of fairfield, so through the delta this is impacting you as well, into novato and santa rosa. i want you to be careful of that. if you're driving from the tri-valley into parts of the east bay and south bay, things are looking calmer. do be careful and give yourself extra space. we're going to be tracking more sunshine after we mix out the fog. i'll tell you about the storm that's affecting your travel
5:03 am
plans and the rest of the holiday weekend in the bay area stays dry and cool, but we will see another storm roll through next week. for now, mike is tracking something on a very typical commute for people heading to socal. overnight was a deadly crash, if you know where casa de fruta is, this is on 152 near lovers lane. the crash happened at about 1:30 this morning. there will be delays right now. the coroner has been on scene for over an hour, so i don't know how much longer the investigation will continue. until that time, you will have slowing in this area, restricting traffic flow. it's very light right now and the tragedy, of course, of a deadly crash, they've got to gather all the information they need before they can clear the scene. closer to the bay itself, we have smooth sensors. we see a number of smaller
5:04 am
crashes, nothing of that nature down in the area of 152. we have fog that may creep down toward 152 as well. i'm tracking that. back to you. a live look at san jose and san francisco airports, and all three bay area airports, oakland included, will be extremely busy today. so the tsa is calling this one of the busiest travel days of the year, with about 2.5 million americans taking flight. more people also flying for the holidays this year compared to last year, so expect security checkpoints to be crowded. the tsa is recommending arriving early to your terminal and bring all those presents unwrapped so they can make it through screening easily. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is speaking with some of today's early arrivals this morning at sfo. she'll have that full report ahead in about a half hour. airbnb is making changes to make sure everyone makes it into
5:05 am
the new year safely. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us with a crackdown on those parties. >> so this is going into its third year now, a crackdown intended to prevent out of control parties, so that won't be a surprise. how the company is doing that might be. airbnb tells us they will use artificial intelligence or ai to look for hundreds of signs that could point to a possible party plan, from how long a booking is, to the type of booking that people are trying to make. the goal is to avoid tragedies like the 2019 shooting in orinda where five people died at a halloween house party turned mass shooting. in sunnyvale, another house party turned violent and the parents of a young man killed are suing not only the property owner who reportedly never sought the proper permits from the city to run a short-term rental, to airbnb, who they are suing for negligence saying the property never should have been listed on the site. in response, airbnb is
5:06 am
increasing party crackdowns, putting restrictions on short rentals between one day and three days, making people confirm they understand the anti-party policy, and offering hosts free noise sensors and also a support line for neighbors who feel the impact, too. some of these have been in effect since 2020 and have resulted in nearly 64,000 blocked bookings in the u.s., more than 13,000 books in the uk, and more than 5,400 blocked bookings in australia. people who violate the rules, property owners and renters alike, risk getting blocked from the site, sometimes for good. . >> something to watch out for. happening today, two men charged in the murder of a retired police officer who died protecting a tv news crew are due back in court for a hearing. alameda county prosecutors may formally drop special enhancement charges against
5:07 am
both, charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of kevin nishida in oakland in 2021. they face 25 years to life if convicted. the special enhancements would carry a sentence of life without parole. the defendants' attorneys argued a third suspect killed nishida. laron gilbert has not been apprehended. to developments in the middle east, a live look in southern israel toward the gaza border and hopes are fading for another cease-fire. hamas leaders have rejected the latest deal saying the pause would be too brief. the latest news out of israel, also a blow for families with hostages still being held captive. all this comes as u.n. leaders try to broker a deal to bring more assistance to gaza. >> brie jackson is live for us in washington. a new report is really highlighting the dire situation on the ground in gaza. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, marcus, laura. the united nations says more than half a million people in gaza are starving because of the
5:08 am
war. as the war in israel intensifies, there are growing concerns about the humanitarian situation. >> so many innocent people that have been displaced from their homes, families killed, many wounded, a lot of fear and uncertainty. >> reporter: white house officials are pressing israel to shift to lower intensity operations and minimize civilian deaths. there are also warnings about the ripple effects of the war. the united nations reports more than one in four people in gaza are starving. >> every single person i speak to, everywhere i go in gaza, is hungry. >> reporter: the world health organization says there are no fully functioning hospitals in all of gaza, and only nine are partially in use. >> it's a somber shell of a hospital with people just waiting to die. >> reporter: after days of negotiations, the u.n. security council plans to vote on a resolution today to deliver
5:09 am
much-needed aid to gaza. the vote had been delayed several times over concerns that the u.s. would veto it. the biden administration now ready to move forward. >> it will support the priority in ensuring that we put a mechanism on the ground that will support humanitarian assistance, and we're ready to vote for it. >> reporter: the resolution also calls for a pause in fighting. and the u.s. vetoed the resolution before because u.s. officials say it called for an unsustainable cease-fire that will only plant the seeds for the next war. >> so much to follow. >> thank you. new video this morning of the flooding in southern california following heavy rainfall. parts of santa barbara received more than 5 inches of rain over
5:10 am
24 hours, stranding some cars. parts of neighboring ventura county will have a lot of cleanup. some of the damage came from an overflowing flood channel which inundated homes and businesses, triggering evacuation orders as well. cinthia pimentel is keeping an eye on the situation there. >> we still have that storm system gaining intensity as it reaches the warmer waters down south and it really brings flashbacks to that severe blooding in montecito a couple of years ago. we are seeing the storm system continuing to barrel down the coast. the bay area right now staying calm, as we are in the middle of another front that's approaching the pacific northwest. so very active out here. this storm system, like i mentioned, continuing to tap into some of that subtropical moisture, rain for los angeles, for the desert southwest vegas is dealing with cloud cover. if you are heading for any travel plans down south, if you're taking 101, the 5 or 99, these showers are going to continue throughout the day,
5:11 am
even a chance of seeing thunderstorm activity through the middle parts of the morning, and even continuing on later on tonight as this storm system continues to push down into parts of san diego, the high desert seeing shower activity. so the potential to see mudslides, severe flooding, is going to take around for the rest of the day. it should stick around as we go into saturday and sunday. for now, mike is helping you get around with cheaper gas prices. >> a couple of spots went up a little bit, others holding steady. it's $3.75 in contra costa county, concord diamond gas and mart. in santa clara county, national petroleum on keys is up a few cents, $3.82. perhaps you're heading through solano county, it's $4.07 at fairfield's best, a&a gas and fuel mart on oliver road. on the roadways, we're looking at a smooth drive
5:12 am
locally around the water. there's fog creeping in, highway 137 socked in. that may be a factor. we're looking at no problems across the bridges right now. a live look does show you low clouds hovering around the bay bridge. this has changed the last 15 minutes or so and that may mean fog on the span itself. looking at the golden gate bridge, it's very clear right now. those headlights moving smoothly from the top of the screen. that's the robin williams tunnel. >> nice view out there. well, christmas weekend likely bringing a lot of joy not only into your home, but also to local movie theatres. there is one new release out there, "migration," about a family of ducks deciding to hit the road. >> coming up, we'll hear from one of the voices behind one of those ducks, someone we're guessing you're pretty familiar with. learn what he told beabout -- me about getting his quack back. bob redell, live here in livermore. you can see this home, they
5:13 am
definitely are getting into the christmas holiday spirit. this is the home of the california christmas lights, a popular website this time of year. the reason why the man behind that website is passing the

5:15 am
good friday morning. 5:15 is the time. let's go to the north bay, checking in on napa, under that
5:16 am
dense fog advisory through at least 10:00. we're starting in those chilly mid-40s, gradually warming up to the 50s by the middle of the morning, and then expecting more sunshine and temperatures in the mid-60s this afternoon. we'll see a dry halloween weekend, but already seeing that storm for next week. here, i can see looking toward the altamont pass, the headlights coming westbound toward dublin. you can see a smooth drive here. the sensor, that's important. we'll see if we can see slowing out of st. mary coming up. i've got new digs on right now. this is for a new movie called "migration," hitting movie theatres today. the stars hope that it leaves you quacking up. >> that's perfect. the film follows a family of ducks embarking on their family migration. here is a taste. >> we're completely lost. >> we're trying to get to
5:17 am
jamaica. >> it's this way. >> we are not flying through this crazy death trap of a city. >> just stick close to me and everything will be all right. i'm okay. >> it's really well done. i got to sit down with one of the film's stars, danny devito. he voices uncle dan in the film and you can be sure his quacks are a long way from his role in one flew over the cuckoo's nest. >> i've never played a duck before. this was a first for me. i like animation because you have a script, but you're able to improvise and have some fun. >> it was so fun to talk to him. just a great guy. the film is being distributed by universal, which like nbc bay area, is also owned by comcast. there's some laugh out loud
5:18 am
funny moments. >> i can't wait to see it. i saw you watching it. >> i was watching it in the newsroom and i felt guilty. i said, i'm really working here. it's really cute. >> i'm going to check it out. >> danny is a great guy. >> it is that season. let's go, go, go. the "today" show this morning wrapping up its holiday tour spotlighting places around the nation that are full of cheer this morning, and they're heading to cooperstown, new york. so on main street there, they also play ball when it comes to being decked out for the holidays. we so hear as part of today's segment, santa himself will be making a special appearance. that's despite his packed calendar right now up there in the north pole. you can watch that later this morning on the "today" show. it should be fun. you don't have to go to the east coast to enjoy the holiday spirit. let's rock around that tree. coming up on "today in the bay," neighborhoods everywhere are celebrating holidays in grand
5:19 am
style, and one man makes it his purpose to track it all. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live for us outside of that home in livermore, and, bob, we hear he's hanging up his santa hat. say it isn't so! >> reporter: not for his light display here on nottingham circle. we're talking about alex and cindy. they're going to continue doing the lights. but his website californiachristmaslights.com, you can take a look at this website, it's been around for 25 years. this is kind of the go-to website for people in the state if you want to find out where the best displays are, not only throughout the state, but here in the bay area. this year there are 300 homes on there. but alex and his wife cindy, good morning, merry christmas. love the snow. >> merry christmas. >> you're getting someone else take over the website after 25 years. what happened? >> well, i've taken it to its full maturity, i am in retirement age, i've got grandchildren to take care of.
5:20 am
it just takes up more time than i can afford to do. >> you're still going to do the lights? >> i'm going to do the lights. this display is going to continue on until the day i die. >> hopefully that's not any time soon. how many homes this year, 300 homes? >> about 300. >> how do you get on the website? how picky are you? >> i'm extremely picky. i get about 150 submissions every year, and about nine, ten actually make it onto the website. so what i want is people to be able to find the best christmas displays in their neighborhoods and in their hometowns. >> and you guys started your display when? >> 1992 we started with a few lights and a couple of things on the lawn. >> when did it get out of control? >> i think about 2004, 2005. >> and why is this important? >> it's fun. and maybe it's part of my addictive personality, i see things that i want to buy and i buy them, and i go, this will look good. they've tried to theme this place because it used to be a
5:21 am
mismash. now we've got penguin island, the whimsical on the other side. >> the website is old school. you've had to transition to l.e.d. so you've had to modernize. i'm still old school when it comes to my lights. how has that been for you? >> it saved us a tremendous amount of money. >> how much? >> originally when we were on incandescent, we had an $800 bill from pg&e just for december. as we started transitioning to l.e.d., it went down to $400. then we switched to solar and now pg&e pays us every year because of how net metering works. >> reporter: just to be clearly, californiachristmaslights.com is still going to be running. your home on nottingham circle is still going to be up and running. i've got to say, how do you guys compete with that? i mean, look at that.
5:22 am
that is very intimidating. >> well, at least he doesn't have a sign over there that points over here that says "ditto". >> merry christmas. thanks for having us. i love the snow. guys, californiachristmaslights.com, you can check it out. it's a great website. and of course you can find their home right here in livermore, nottingham circle. >> so fun, and thank them for getting up early and being awake at 5:20 in the morning. perfect. the weather out there, it puts you in the christmas spirit. >> it's not frightful. >> we've got california sunshine, at least for the bay area right now. other spots still waking up to rain in southern california, but we are going to take advantage of this sunshine-filled day here. look at these temperatures, 60s around the bay, 61 in san francisco, 66 as you make your way into concord and down south. i do want you to be aware of that dense fog this morning and the rain that's on the way for next week. so you have a calm weekend ahead
5:23 am
before we get to this next rainmaker, that's going to be coming up ahead on wednesday, thursday, possibly lingering until the last couple of days of december. early estimates, anywhere from an inch to two as we get through the next round of rain and the sierra could be benefiting as we take the long-range outlook and see maybe less than half a foot local level, higher elevations possibly seeing about a foot of pressure powder or more with this colder system. over the next couple of days we will stay dry, but christmas eve and christmas day be careful, bundle up, we're starting off the mornings with chilly 30s and awaiting the next rainmaker. we're looking at the oakland camera, over here i saw some low clouds hovering at the top of the screen. a little farther north out of oakland, there's the bay bridge, and there is definitely more fog coming into the area. that will be a factor as folks drive through this portion, even though the dense fog, imagine how tough it is to see for highway 37 and throughout the
5:24 am
north bay. despite that, we do see a number of smaller crashes, nothing major in this general area. we are still talking about the crash on 152 cutting you off. you can get through the area, you can get through the area, but traffic control is in place (♪♪) (♪♪)

our nbc bay area responds team is always in the giving spirit. >> to wrap up the season, consumer investigator chris chmura joins us with a few recent cases he put a bow on. >> happy friday. tinsel and garland are nice, but around here we deck the halls with savings and refunds for our viewers, like tim in san jose. he agreed to a newspaper delivery at a discounted rate. well, eight weeks later, his price shot up. he protested, got nowhere. so he asked us if we would give the publisher a jingle. we did. it acted. tin is saving $208 over the next 12 months. mary in san jose, she recently realized a winery charged her for four years of wine club membership that she canceled four years ago. the winery offered a one-year refund. mary tapped our team to get the rest. the winery then budged and gave mary $1,570 to stuff her stocking. if you've encountered a

5:30 am
right now at 5:30, the rush is on. we've got everything you need to
5:31 am
know heading into the christmas weekend, including live team coverage on a busy travel day, and your holiday weather forecast. also, not one, but two heartless crimes, one of them caught on camera. how the contents in a stolen purse added insult to injury for one of the victims. this is "today in the bay." we are close to christmas day, so we're going to bring you some christmas cheer during this newscast. we want to say good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. let's start with our top story, that holiday travel rush is on. our ginger conejero saab is live at sfo monitoring what will be one of the busiest days of the year. mike inouye, of course, tracking the roads. >> let's start with cinthia pimentel in for kari with a look at the holiday forecast. a lot of folks are excited. >> we are going to be providing a lot of sunshine, so hopefully everybody stays happy over the next couple of days. i want you to bundle up and be careful on the roadways.
5:32 am
we're starting off with 40s and 50s. the cold air is starting to settle. we are also monitoring the fog around the bay area. check out that oakland camera as you approach the bay bridge toll plaza. the dense fog is creeping in from the north bay, the tri-valley, really starting to blanket parts of the east bay this morning. also notice the fog rolling through parts of walnut creek. as we go throughout the day, we'll mix out the fog and see the afternoon sunshine. we'll start off our holiday weekend chilly 30s and 40s, and also stick around with mostly sunny days. the rain is returning next week, so hopefully you're asking santa for new rain gear. we'll need it as we track the storm system the middle portion of next week and possibly into the final days of december. for now, right before crunch time at bay area airports, that's where the year-end holiday travel is in the thick of it as one of the busiest times of the year. our team coverage continues with "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab live at sfo. ginger, you've been there
5:33 am
all week. what's the sense now that we're getting closer to christmas? >> reporter: good morning to you, cinthia. yes, we have been here all week, which is why i can really say that we have gotten a sense of when it's been busy, when it's not been busy, when there are lulls. today you feel the hustle and bustle of this year-end holiday travel. there are lines, although they're running smoothly, but there are lines to check in your bags or lines to get to the kiosk, and, also, every now and then there will be some lines that will build up here at tsa. you can kind of see it behind us. but the wait time is great. it's looking great. it's four minutes. but we did stop a set of passengers, we've got mike and kelly to talk to us. they're excited. they've got all these smiles, despite how busy it is at the airport. you're getting on a flight to go where? >> fort lauderdale and a cruise for christmas. >> merry christmas to you guys. did you make sure to get here extra early?
5:34 am
we've been hearing tips all week about getting here three hours in advance. anything you did outside the norm? >> maybe an hour earlier. >> an hour earlier. >> that's all. >> and checked in bags. how long was your experience to check in your bags and get through those lines? >> we have pre-check and we also got clear, so we'll fly through. but there are huge lines outside. so pre-check, if possible. >> reporter: another great tip. we've been hearing small tidbits all week. we want to make sure you get to your flight. thank you so much. the tsa line is not looking bad for you. put that sunscreen on when you get on that cruise boat. thank you. >> merry christmas. >> reporter: mike and kelly, just about to get their tan on on that cruise ship, hopefully. but as they mentioned, there are long lines outside there. sfo not the only bay area airport that is seeing the hustle and bustle for the holiday travel this year. let's take a live look at san jose's mineta airport.
5:35 am
there are also some long lines there. we've got that live look at the southwest terminal, where passengers are lined up, and you can also see it's really that bag drop-off that adds a little time. because you can check in online previous to your flight time, but it's that bag drop-off that is a variable depending on how many flights are coming out as well at the same time. there are no scheduled ground delays for sfo according to the faa. that's unlike how we started the week. but there is bad weather in southern california and that may impact bay area flights once again. nationwide yesterday, 3,000 flights were delayed, bad weather in southern california being blamed for a lot of them, with also ground delays in dallas yesterday. so we will be here all morning, we'll keep a close eye on things and give you guys an update if you're headed somewhere this morning, to any of the airports,
5:36 am
san jose and sfo. before i go, there was a quick tip as you drive in to sfo, and they say, hey, you know what, instead of getting dropped off at departures, go down to arrivals since it gets a little congested. if you're really looking to save a couple more minutes, just take the escalator up. >> i've heard that one. >> every little bit counts. >> this just in, arrivals is really backed up. >> thanks, ginger. it's not just those skies that are packed with travelers today. >> that's right. the roadways are busy as well. we want to head over to mike inouye, taking a closer look at how congested some of those travel points will be. >> yeah, compared to years in the past, things are different every year, of course. but we're going to give you a relative understanding of how things are going to be much more packed. so is air travel, but i want to show you some numbers, what we've been reporting about busy roads. look at this graphic. this is ginger's section, very important, that's why they made it red. but look at my section, auto
5:37 am
travel. 90% of travel is scheduled to be done by vehicle of some sort, buses, trains, cars, transit, so keep that in mind. there's going to be so much traffic on the roadway. that is why you're going to have to be patient getting to your destination and make sure you focus on safety and the experience, it's the journey. 104 million, up 1.8%. here is last year, here is this year. it's up a bit, but still not back at the same level we had before the pandemic. so we're still increasing traffic volume every year and that's why you have to get back to the delay, get used to the delay. growth year-over-year, but still not back to what we had previous to the pandemic. just a note so you prepare yourself in your mind. right now traffic is great. the maps show no real delays close to the bay. we have scattered incidents but no problems. if you're heading to southern california, you know 152, you know where casa de fruta is and
5:38 am
this is a critical point at lovers lane where there was a deadly crash overnight. they still have traffic control in the area. it happened at 1:30. we don't know when they'll be able to fully reopen 152. we're seeing traffic back up again gilroy and casa de fruta, so that will be a factor if you're heading to southern california right now. our coverage continues throughout the morning and also on the "today" show. stay with nbc bay area for all of your holiday travel updates. 5:37 right now. neighbors in berkeley's elmwood neighborhood are unnerved after armed robbers targeted two women and later returned for more. this started wednesday night when the thieves mugged an 80-year-old woman and her 45-year-old niece on alcatraz avenue. they took their purses. surveillance images capturing what police say happened next. a few hours later, that same crew showed up in their neighborhood in a dark sedan and used one of the victim's keys to steal her honda accord.
5:39 am
one neighbor says this kind of thing is happening just far too often. >> this is not occurring because a certain property or house is at risk, or because someone has not done something better. i think that we all need to acknowledge that the problem is the crime itself. >> neither woman was seriously injured in the mugging. police say no arrests have been made. if you are heading to south lake tahoe this weekend, travel along highway 50 may be slow going. teams are doing avalanche control work, removing boulders just east of echo summit. controls may be in effect in some locations. here is a live look outside, a caltrans camera near echo lake. very hard to see right now, but that work probably not happening right now. they'll be up and at it trying to clear the roads as soon as they can. >> so many people are going to be traveling that way.
5:40 am
how is weather looking? >> it's already a scary enough road, you need to slow down. right now the good news is i'm not looking at any weather advisories up there. the only thing i would be cautious of is, of course, bring the chains. you never know when the weather is going to change suddenly. tomorrow, if you have plans to head out early in the morning, you could be met with a little rain and snow showers, but that will be about it. the rest of the weekend and into parts of next week looks good. but if you are going from the mountains over to the coast side, big sur looks beautiful out there today and tomorrow. those temperatures in the low 60s and the morning lows will cool down into the 40s. no rain there to make it a messy commute along highway 1. how about coming down to christmas in the park? it continues now through january 1st here in downtown san jose. maybe you already have family in town for today, beautiful sunshine, and the temperature in the mid-60s there. the events are starting to wind down, but i did find one in the north bay. corte madera has their concert

tonight. it will be indoors, but i want you to bring a jacket because once you step out, temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s tonight. chase center, temperatures there in the 50s. no rain to speak of. it will be nice and clear going into san francisco, but it will be a beautiful afternoon as well over in oakland, the final days of glowfari, the lantern festival, i believe it's sold out. bring a bundle of jackets for you and the kids as we get ready there this afternoon. we'll talk more about the rest of the weekend outlook. mike, what are you tracking on the roadways? >> not a lot, at least not at the bay bridge. we had low clouds, you were talking about that and warning me that drivers might experience low clouds, and it did travel through the area, fog, clouds. they'll move, so are the cars right now. it's an easy drive, lighter volume. the north bay, that's what cinthia was warning you about, highway 37, 101, i-80 between fairfield and the carquinez

bridge and benicia bridge. getting into the city, we have activity over here at chase center, the warriors playing tonight again, on a good run. don't want to jinx anything, so i'll just mention the game and carry on. there will be more traffic on the 280 extension. a lot of folks will head into the city for weekend activities, many folks from out of town. the rest of the bay shows a smooth flow of traffic. if you're heading to southern california, it's 152, very slow right now as you're passing by lovers lane in between 101 and casa de fruta. that is the access over to i-5. you can use 25 and 156 if you really want to get around it. the traffic volume will build. chp has been asked when they hope to reopen, they don't have an estimate yet. we'll follow this closely. back to you. >> thanks, mike. it is 5:42. managing holiday stress. coming up next on "today in the bay," some expert advice on how to beat what some find negative mental health impacts from the

5:46 am
good friday morning. 5:45. let's go out to dublin. busy on 580 already. if you're heading to the central valley for holidays plans, be careful of fog that will creep up. if you're staying local, we're seeing plenty of sunshine as we go throughout the day, temperatures in the mid-60s. we'll talk about the forecast coming up. i've got 580 in richmond and this is some of the low cloud cover that's creeping around. it may be foggy for some folks. we notice that in the north bay. and also creeping in other spots that may add complications. happening today, pg&e plans to show off one of its most important weapons for fire protection, drones, which teams will use to inspect power lines
5:47 am
following this week's storms. pg&e says the devices can inspect more than 500 utility poles per day, and starting next year drones will handle all of its power line inspections. so a big day in football, at least for me this christmas day. christmas night will hopefully bring joy of its own to niners fans. we don't want to jinx anything, but some people are calling their next game a possible super bowl preview. how big are we talking about? let's put it this way. it will be the third time since 1970 that the best team in each conference is meeting this late in the season. the niners, which is the home team, of course, the ravens, my favorite team, both 11-3 and top seeds. they need monday night at levi's, and the niners are going into it knowing the ravens have one of the top defensive units in the league. >> no hesitation whenever they see the ball in the air, those guys are just flying around right now. >> they're really good against
5:48 am
the run, really good against the pass, extremely sound coverages. they know how to get after it with pressure, they know how to get after it with front four. really good defense. >> another thing they have in common, each time has clinched a playoff spot. whoever wins this game will actually stand a much better chance of grabbing the first round bye. 'tis the season not only for holiday joy, but sometimes some stress can creep in for some people. the american psychiatric association finds 44% are excited to see friends and family, but nearly three in ten people anticipate feeling more stressed than usual. for about 20%, that stress is related to the money spent on gifts, and affording it. while we may not be able to help our loved ones with that, there are ways to give the free gift of kindness. >> maybe this isn't the season to chastise somebody about why they still haven't picked a major, why they still haven't gotten married, why they still
5:49 am
haven't brought grandkids to the party. it doesn't mean that there's never a good time to have those kind of conversations, but because we've been separated for so many years, because of some of the public health things we've been dealing with, let's just find the joy in being together. >> let's find the joy. the national crisis help line is always available if you need help or want to find out how to help someone else. you can text 988 to chat anonymously. 5:48 right now. we have a special guest joining us in the studio this morning to spread some holiday cheer. it is the famous therapy bunny named alex. maybe you've seen him at the giants gamed decked out in orange and black. he's doing more than just watching the game. he's a volunteer at the airport and hospitals. >> this morning he and his caretaker join us in studio. this is so much fun. tell us how you started volunteering, at airports, you
5:50 am
go to hospitals. >> this all started, he was trained and certified through the sfpca and he was accepted at sfo and recently he's been accepted into happy tails at sjc as well. >> wow. >> they say if you do something you love, you never feel like you're working. alex is not working, for sure. what you're doing, you're actually looking to do a volunteer world record here. >> yeah, he's doing the guinness book of world records for the most volunteer hours for a rabbit in general. >> i didn't know that was a thing. [ laughter ] >> pretty cool. >> i love it. a lot of people, you're familiar with therapy dogs that you see out there as well. why did you choose a rabbit, and such a big one? >> so i'm very familiar with rabbits. i had one for 16 years, and they're a very special animal, one of the rarest type of
5:51 am
rabbits. they're the most docile and giving and loving animals. >> and big. alex weighs 30 pounds. >> yeah, he's about average for this breed. >> wow. >> so well mannered, too. what's the most important part about volunteering? >> so the most important part is just giving back. i do a lot of -- from my aspect, i love the airport, but i do a lot of hospice care. >> that's so nice. >> there's people who really need that in their day because they just don't get it, and so just bringing that joy to people, and just walking down the street. it's special. >> i think we need a newsroom therapy rabbit. who knew? >> thank you, guys. >> thank you for coming. and, really, thank you for sharing and what you do. it helps others. >> you know, the giants is a lot of fun, too. we go there and the crowds get
5:52 am
into it. >> he's not bothered by the sounds? >> he's been socialized properly, and the fact that noises don't bother him, because it's not about the noise, it's about the energy. if you bring good energy, he's going to feel it. it doesn't matter what's going on, you can have cars running by, and as long as the energy is good, he loves it. >> i was saying, they've been trying to get me to get a dog. i said, why not a big bunny? >> there's lots of them looking for homes. check your rescues and you're good to go. >> now i'm going to get a bunny. >> there could be a person inside a bunny costume. >> so the other thing, especially for the viewers, the larger the rabbit, the more docile they are. they're more confident with themselves. >> the little ones are squirrely, watch out. >> the little ones are a little more afraid, wanting to bite and fight. the bigger ones just don't care because they're big enough to defend themselves. >> life lessons. >> there you have it. >> thanks again for coming.
5:53 am
>> thank you, guys. >> oh, my gosh. do they like weather like today? >> today is perfect. >> a beautiful weather for alex. >> he's actually on his way to new york city. >> oh, my goodness. >> he's going to have christmas eve at rockefeller center. >> really? >> wow, that is so cool. >> much cooler there. he has to go. let's get everybody moving and grooving this morning with a check of our microclimate forecast. we are starting off not too bad temperature-wise, 40s and 50s. but it is the fog that i need you to be careful of. if you are heading out the door early to run any last-minute holiday errands, to get yourself to your holiday destination, it's very dense in parts of the north bay, through the delta, and it's starting to creep through parts of the east bay as well. so just give yourself a little bit of extra space between the cars, use those low beams. we're also going from the air up into the lower elevations, we're talking about this coastal flood advisory that's with us until at
5:54 am
least 10:00 this morning. we're waiting for the peak of those waves to come in at around 7:24 this morning, running higher than normal. it could bring about some localized flooding. so extra time for travel just about anywhere. what are those temperatures looking like? it's going to be a nice day filled with plenty of sunshine. temperatures mid-60s in san francisco, upper 60s as we make our way into the valleys, 66 in concord, 68 in scotts valley, as well as in san martin. as we take it into tomorrow and on sunday, some colder air will start to settle. notice how we bring the temperatures back down into the upper 50s and low 60s, which means that we will also be starting off with very cold mornings, not only tomorrow, but also on sunday, christmas eve, 30s and 40s for those wind sheltered valleys. we could seeing frost early in the morning. as we get closer to monday, those temperatures still 30s and 40s around the immediate bay, so it will be a chilly christmas morning as you get ready to
5:55 am
unwrap all of those presents. we will be hopefully asking santa for some new rain gear, as we take a look at another active pattern already starting to set up as we go into the middle portion of next week. some of you might be staying indoors, taking the christmas week off. some of you that have to head to work, it looks to be heavy and gusty toward the coastline. we're looking at the potential for sierra snow. we'll work to get those details fine-tuned as we get closer to it. in the meantime, our seven-day forecast for today through the weekend, enjoy the calm weather whether the storm arrives late on tuesday into wednesday. our inland valleys are going to start off with fog, but then mix out to plenty of sunshine, chilly mornings ahead, dropping into the 30s and 40s. the highs no warmer than the upper 50s and low 60s. we'll watch for the rain to form and get closer to the bay area as we go into the middle portions of next week. for now, there is some fog, there is some mist. >> we're looking over here and it's traveling through the area.
5:56 am
we saw some hitting the golden gate bridge. here, not as much traffic, the richmond side of the san rafael bridge, seeing the glow with lights in the distance. visibility coming down a bit. the mist on the roadway will mean slicker conditions. the bay bridge toll plaza maintains a steady flow. it's 5:55, so that's pretty good as you approach 6:00. we have lighter traffic, as we anticipated. the fog is traveling around, still definitely hitting folks right here in vallejo and heading over for muir island. not really any slowing. a smooth drive for the rest of the bay as well. there's no sensors slowing, not even in san jose, despite a crash right about tully road. as we head south, we continue with the investigation of that crash. the fog may complicate things as the investigation continues, 152 at lovers lane. back to you. >> thanks, mike. happening now, online sales of two apple popular watches are being halted. the u.s. international trade commission recently ordered a ban on apple series 9 and ultra
