south beach harbor just outside of oracle park on a chilly saturday morning. we hope you are warm wherever you're joining us from. thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. so calm and lovely out there right now. >> yeah. after a very stormy start to the week we're definitely in for more sunshine throughout the bay area, but before we get there, i need you to slow down a little bit out on the roadways. not only is it a chilly start, also seeing some fog hanging around parts of the north bay, wake up to 30s and 40s. it's pushed through the sacramento valley and down towards the central valley. if plans include driving anywhere for the holiday weekend, just be careful with the changes in visibility. once we mix out of this morning fog, heading for cool sunshine in the 50s and 60s throughout the bay area. it will be a chilly start to the next couple mornings. christmas eve and christmas day and we need to watch out for rain gear in the forecast. we need it coming up in the seven-day forecast.

that's coming up. >> cinthia, see you soon. thanks. we begin with breaking news out of the east bay where two children are dead after a hit-and-run crash. it happened around 1:00 this morning in antioch at west 6th and g streets. police tell us the driver of that black suv ran a stop sign and t-boned the blue car sending it crashing into a fire hide hydrant. two boys, one 12 and one 14 died. the driver of the black suv ran away. police looked for the driver of that black suv they're also looking into who was driving the boys. now to a story you'll see only on nbc bay area. an 80-year-old berkeley woman is speaking out after she was vile lengthily mugged just outside of a restaurant she was walking to with her niece. later that night the thieves used her keys to steal her car from in front of her home. gia vang sat down with her.

>> reporter: on 80-year-old claire schooley's arm walking in the neighborhood. has an injured knee and painful spasms now. going to a japanese restaurant. >> right there, all of a sudden, there was somebody behind each of us and threw us to the ground. >> reporter: her 45-year-old niece dragged, because she wouldn't give up her purse while claire's was stolen along with keys, credit cards and house keys. >> all gone, 30 seconds i would say. >> reporter: warning her car might get stolen. just before midnight. >> cameras -- >> reporter: cameras installed help of her son david and the company he works for verkade, stealing her honda accord from in front of her home pap dark sedan following. david sent the link right away to detectives. >> i think that ability to help them do their job and ensure

safety of the community is incredibly powerful. >> reporter: claire said the alameda sheriff's office says her car was involved in a big chase. suspect tried to ditch it. all but one got away. >> after a few hours came out and he was arrested. in his pocket, my keys. >> reporter: an arrest related to those cases and making for a list of to-dos. new driver's licence, changing locks and holding off on a previously scheduled mri because detail was in her purse. >> more tentative and carol. >> reporter: seeing the bright side. >> thankful for all the people who are upset, you know. but first of all they want to know if i'm okay, and then what can we do. >> reporter: gia vang, "today in the bay." >> and in the south bay police are giving people the opportunity to choose to be

breathalyzed with an incentive if they do. it's something san jose police hope when help people enjoy safe and happy holidays. "today in the bay's" jocelyn moran reports from santana row. >> how many drinks you had. >> blow into it? >> reporter: san jose limit program for officers asking people walking by if they'd like to see where their blood alcohol concentration is at by blowing into a breathalyzer. >> blow, blow, blow, blow, blow, blow -- >> reporter: this man volunteered to do so. he just had a few drinks. >> five drinks. almost double the limit. >> what are you going to do? >> uber. >> reporter: hesitance to volunteer but did anyway. >> 0.194. >> surprised? >> no. we're having fun. why we're down here. >> reporter: officers told people they could keep their cars at santana row overnight.

educate people what it takes to reach the legal limit for blood alcohol concentration, 0.08% in california. >> and every year people die, or severe injuries from dui. >> reporter: highway pa control christmas maximum enforcement period started six p.m. during the same period last year, 640 arrests for dui. they say it's about education. >> there you go. >> reporter: so people can stay safe this holiday season. in san jose, jocelyn moran, nbc bay area news. we now know the identity of a man stabbed to death in a domestic violence attack on the peninsula. police say 30-year-old ezra cuage died about being stabbed. yell. yellinwater stabbed and critically injured a neighbor.

she was in a relationship with him but she tried to break up with him. he was her friend and was trying to help her. the suspect shot and killed himself during the police confrontation up north in ukiah. found not guilty beating a former san francisco fire department commissioner. a jury acquitted doty. they say he beat carmignani in revenge but the defense says carmignani attacked doty with bear spray. and demanding release of the list of the top three candidates considered for oakland's new police chief. this as the city hasn't had an official chief in ten months. last week the police commission sent a final list of candidates to oakland mayor chantel. that list remains confidential.

the mayor will make the final hiring decision. the naacp wants the mayor and police commission to hold public forums so people can meet the candidates who will lead their police department. former police chief laron armstrong reappied for the job. in october his name was on the short list of seven people for police chief, but the mayor said she will not rehire armstrong. back in february she fired him after an independent report found he did not properly handle two cases of police misconduct. armstrong was later exonerated of any wrongdoing. it remains unclear whether he made the list of the top three. we are going to talk now about travel, where a live look in san jose for you right here. the tsa expects today to be one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season. the tsa is advising travelers arrive several hours early. travelers we spoke with yesterday said they did just that.

tsa expects to screen nearly a half million people at sjc alone this week. one traveler went to great lengths to arrive early. >> i got an suv, mattress in the back. came here 2:00 in the morning. parked here. woke up. 5:30. come out here. now, i should have got up earlier now that i think about it, i think it's going to be fine. >> a prediction airports will be busy next week as people return home. peak days for air travel, next thursday and friday. and doctors are sounding the alarm ahead of holiday gatherings with family and friends, because this is the time of year when illness really spreads. health experts are concerned about low vaccination numbers for the covid booster. in the south bay, for example, fewer than one in five people have received the annual shot. rsv rates also are staying steady, and flu rates are on the rise. a combination that puts pressure on the health care system as we near the end of the year.

>> hospitals are starting to get stretched. you know, we are seeing 90% cast -- you know, occupancy, it's going up to 95% in some areas. you add more to that and it won't be long before people have to be transferred to other hospitals. >> doctors are reminding, it's never too late to get a vaccine for flu or for covid. that's especially important for people 65 and older. san francisco's efforts to improve safety in and around union square appear to be working. we found last-minute shopper packing into downtown yesterday. the city's main shopping district. city leaders have been trying to turn the bad shopping experience around by increasing police visibility. police say thefts have dropped by about half compared to this time last year. everyone seems to agree, it's getting better. >> yeah! we see a lot of stores have been open right in our.

. welcome back. 7:13 on your saturday morning. the golden gate bridge, nice and clear out there, but chilly. cinthia pimentel will be along with our christmas eve forecast in just a few minutes. but first -- the official announcement still a few weeks away, but we already know a brentwood native will compete in the olympics. the 22-year-old is ranked number two in the world in taekwondo and will represent team usa in paris. but this week, taking a rare break from training to celebrate the holidays at home. "today in the bay's" jodi hernandez caught up with him. >> excited. a lot to my own journey unfolding, it's really cool. >> reporter: meet 22-year-old cj nickolas, america's top athlete in taekwondo. nikolas earned top spot on team

usa becoming the first u.s. man to earn a place on the olympic team before the qualifiers, after nabbing medal after medal around the globe over the past six months. >> i feel like i'm the best in the world. i genuinely, in my heart, feel i'm best in the world. it's a matter putting it together on the day and actually believing that once i get on the mat. >> reporter: his journey started in contra costa county at age 3 when his mom enrolled him and herself in taekwondo. >> growing up she was training right next to me. the whole time i was training i could see her in the corner of my eye training as well. i couldn't let my mom outdo me! >> reporter: once upon a time, funny story. >> once upon a time i used to be better than cj and always tease him about that. >> junior world championship

medal. >> reporter: soon cj was unstoppable winning competitions around the world before leaving home to train full-time when he was just 17 years old. his mom says she knew he was special from the start. >> because he was the person he was, if somebody can do it, he can. >> you're tall now. >> reporter: the two enjoy working out together still and say it still hasn't sunk in, they'll soon be in paris. >> super excited the and surreal and he's officially going to the olympics. no way to move from that top two slot. they haven't officially announced it yet. >> i genuinely believe i'll win the gold at the olympics. just a matter of time at this point and work. a lot of work ahead the next six months. >> reporter: this week time to enjoy being home for the holiday. a much-deserved break before getting back to the mat with his biggest supporter rooting him

on. in brentwood, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. nbc bay area is your home for all things olympics. much of the action will happen right here when the games begin on july 26th. we'll be bringing you complete coverage of our bay area athletes live from paris. homeowners in california are losing another option for home insurance. motors insurance corporation is exiting the business nationwide. it's been offering homeowners insurance for about two years. the company says it all stems from an issue with a business partner and plans to find a new one and try to re-enter the homeowners' market. for now motors insurance covers about 2,000 customers in california, and it will notify them that they're policies will not be renewed. this christmas weekend when it comes to holiday spirit, one bay area icon is making sure families are still feeling it.

giving everybody a wider picture what's going on across the country, getting ready to do traveling. fine out to the west. even the pacific northwest quiet for now. it's through parts of idaho, down through the desert southwest that are dealing with snow and rain. also looking at a couple of systems making their way up to, towards the upper midwest. careful of delays traveling in and around the country. staying local. a plan, too. slightly cooler than we had yesterday. 50s and 60s out there in concord and do 62 down here in downtown san jose. as we track what's going on with the fog this morning, it should mix out of the bay area fairly quickly. lingers about, if you have plans to travel up towards, through the sacramento valley. could impact plans making your way down 5 or 99 into southern california. as we roll around for tomorrow afternoon, christmas eve. i see a little more cloud cover hanging about. also start christmas day with a

bit of that cloud cover and seeing a system that's starting to approach the shoreline as we go on into late monday night, early on tuesday. i don't think it should ruin christmas day plans. we'll need, how much, a couple more jackets, asking santa for fresh, new ones waking up tomorrow and monday with 30s and 40s up there in the north bay. i think monday will also be a bit of a chillier start, but should get a little more moisture here, 40s up in the north bay and immediate shoreline. upper 30s making our way into the inland valleys. also asking santa for new rain gear. next storm system arrives wednesday. start to feel the wind first. see cloud cover return, and also the benefits of this next storm system will be that it will be a colder system compared to what we had earlier this week. seeing some new, fresh powder up there in the sierra, and possibly the storm system staying with us into the final days of december on into january. early estimates now keeping the

last winter's rains washed away the bridge connecting him and neighbors to the outside world, his quick thinking saved the day installing a zip line that became a lifeline. the only way for months for people and supplies to make it in or out. >> come and eat? >> reporter: in april met sharon alexander. every sunday for years delivered homemade food to people living on the streets of oakland. but then for a period of time this year, she herself became homeless. did that stop her from feeding others? not a chance. >> i feel like i found my purpose in life, and i don't want to give that up. >> reporter: in may we stopped by alameda country day school in san jose where sarah vendor and her classmates did more than just learn about 3d printing. they did something special with it. after months of trial and error, succeeded building a functioning synthetic hand for a thirds

thirds -- third grader in their school. in july a handful of high schoolers harassed by gang members, a school resource officer offered to wait for the bus with them. the cop and kids bonded. when rucker learned they loved music -- ♪ ♪ he helped them get practice space and instruments to form their own musical group. now playing gigs both in and out of school. ♪ in september we told you about 89-year-old phil, for the past 15 years on 9/11 the new york native has been taking his bagpipes to south bay fire stations to play in honor of those who lost their lives that day. and in october took you into the yard at soledad correctional training fooflt show you an amazing program. sam runs riley's wish where inmates in the veterans hub of the prison take in rescue dogs, train them and get them ready

exclusively hearing from an 80-year-old woman vile lengthily attacked and mugged in berkeley. it happened wednesday night in the elmwood neighborhood where 80-year-old claire schooley says she was wuking with her 45-year-old niece to dinner. two people threw them to the ground from behind. stole her purse, credit cards, phone, house keys and car keys. then just before midnight her security cameras at home showed someone using her keys to steal her car. yesterday alameda county sheriffs informed her her car was involved in a dangerous chase. one was arrested. schooley will be more cautious going forward. >> they knew where the guy was. after a couple hours came out. he was arrested. and in his pocket were my keys. >> i think i'm, i'll be a little built more tentative, a little bit more careful.

>> the people arrested in relation to the case were arrested by berkeley police. claire says she has been helped through this, because of her family, her neighbors and the community at large. turning now to the israeli army releasing footage it says shows its soldiers operating in northern gaza in the past few weeks. the military said its forces killed numerous palestinian militants, destroyed hamas' infrastructure and located large quantities of weapons. the air and ground campaign continues, even as israel says it is in the final stages of clearing out hamas militants. the military says that over the past few weeks its trooped conducted operational activity in the southern part of gaza city. and destroyed a tunnel network serving as an underground post and numerous buildings used as hamas headquarters. health leaders in gaza say more

than 20,000 people have died during israel's war against hamas. more than half a million people in gaza, a quarter of the population, are starving, according to a report thursday from the united nations. this comes as we have learned that one american hostage believed taken by hamas has been killed. the family of israeli american gadi haggai says he was shot during the october 7th attack. but it's unclear exactly when he passed. his body is being held in gaza by hamas. hamas also kidnapped his wife. she remains in captivity. this tragic news coming as negotiations for release of more hostages has apparently stalled. the white house has said that president joe biden will sign a proclamation to pardon certain marijuana offenses building on broader action he took last year for thousands of people convicted of possession under federal law.

the statement said that the new pardons target additional offenses of simple possession and use of marijuana under federal and d.c. law. the president also called on governors to take similar actions with state marijuana-related offenses arguing that no one should be in jail or prison "solely due to the use or possession of marijuana." and here in california, people who use cannabis outside of work hours will have more employment protections beginning in the new year. the new law beginning january 1st prohibits employers from discriminating against a worker who tests positive for cannabis matabolites. potential employers cannot hold it against a candidate if a drug test reveals past cannabis use. the naacp in oakland is

demanding release of the list of the top three candidates considered for oakland's new police chief. this as the city hasn't had an official chief for ten months. last week the police commission sent its final list of candidates to oakland mayor chantel. the list remains confidential. the mayor will make the final hiring decisions. the naacp wants the mayor and police commission to hold public forums so people can meet the candidates that will lead their police department. former police chief lamar armstrong reapplied for the job. in october his name was on a short list of seven people for police chief. the mayor said she will not rehire armstrong. back in february she fired him after an independent report found he did not properly handle two cases of police misconduct. armstrong was later exonerated of any wrongdoing. it remains unclear whether he even made that top three list. a live look for you as the sun shines over sfo.

tsa is expecting today to be one of the busiest days of the holiday travel season. and a live look to the south. wow! a long line there at san jose mineta airport. tsa advising travelers to arrive several hours early. looks like hopefully people are doing just that. the tsa is expecting to streen screen nearly a half million people at sjc alone this week. we spoke with a traveler this morning who got there early and said lines are already long. >> this is a little extensive, but it's, you know, it's kind of expected for the holidays. >> yeah. tsa also expects airports to be busy next week as people head home. peak days for air travel next week are thursday and friday. speaking of holiday travel, doctors are sounding the alarm ahead of all of our holiday gatherings with family and friend. they say it's the time of year illness spreads quickly. health experts are concerned about low vaccination numbers

federation, says americans on average are expected to spend close to $1,000 this holiday season. slightly more than last year. we spoke with a bay area financial advisor who says planning ahead is key. that includes setting a spending limit. he says try to look for apps or planners to help you keep track of spending and also pay in cash. that way it can help you in the long run. not only do you know when you're going to hit that limit, but also you're spending, it won't put you into debt. if you do use a credit card keep track of your payments. it's critical. >> make sure you're on top of the total you racked up. one of the challenges this holiday season that wasn't a factor the last few years is just the interest rates on credit cards. average interest rate is over 21% now. that can add quite a bit to the cost of those purchases, if you are not paying that credit card off every month. >> reporter: also, if you plan to donate to charities this year look for the amount required for tax write-offs. you can also consider using a

welcome back. out of about 1,000 applicants across the globe, our city here in the bay area of mountain view is coming out on top receiving an "a" to help our climate in crisis. >> a great win for them. showing cities in regions around the world, kira, they're taking four times as many steps to tackle our climate in crisis, and i went up there, spoke with the city's chief sustainability officer to find out firsthand what the city is doing. >> reporter: ambitious and bold in work against climate change the city of mountain view is one of 190 cities around the world

to earn an "a" for commitment to the environment helping residents adapt to and plan for extreme climate events in our changing world. >> we recognize how big of a challenge climate change sand how fast we need to go. >> reporter: more than 930 cities, states, regions took part in the program offered by the discloegs profit, a nonprofit supporting thousands of amenities managing risks and opportunities when it comes to climate change. mentview is on top because they're taking four times at many measures compared to other cities planning for adapting to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, preparing for sea level rise and protecting local ecosystems. >> we live on the bay and understand as the climate changes, as we have more emissions, we will be experiencing sea level rise. looking at engineering-based solutions. storing former salt pond to natural tidal areas so we can

welcome back. here's a quick look at top stories we're following this saturday morning including search for a hit-and-run driver believed responsible for killing two children early this morning in the east bay. it happened around 1:00 in antioch at west 6th and g streets. police tell us the driver of the black suv ran a stop sign t-boning this blue car sending it into a fire hydrant. a 12-year-old boy and 14-year-old boy inside were killed. the driver of the black suv ran away, while police searched for that driver, they're also looking into who was driving the car the boys were in.

doctors are reminding that this time of year is when illness spreads quickly, as we gather with family and friends. health experts are sounding the alarm about low vaccination rates for the covid booster. in the south bay, fewer than one in five people have received the annual shot. rsv rates are steady and flu rates are on the rise. doctors remind it's never too late to get a vaccine for flu or for covid. that's especially important for people 65 and older. and a live look for you outside of sfo and inside sjc. tsa now advising travel others arrive several hours early. travelers we smoke with yesterday did just that, and this morning as well. the tsa expects to screen nearly a half million people at sjc alone this week. the tsa also expects airports to be busy next week as people return home. peak days are expected to be thursday and friday. before we go, cinthia has
