a lot of people are gathering in san francisco and that's where people line the embarcadero and other parts of the city to get a glimpse of the fireworks to light up the sky. right now let's get back to new york time square where the ball is getting ready to drop. it is a six ton ball. it's going to be lowered ever so slowly with those beautiful waterford crystals. it will be shining brightly. i've never been there for that 1 million people in time square. been to time square but not 1 million people there. it must be something crazy. >> absolute. you have to use the bathroom before you go because there's millions of people but we have the countdown starting we are at nine, eight, seven, -- let's listen in. >> happy new year. 2024 is here in new york

anyway. people are getting along rather nicely as they always do this time every year. the gorgeous crystal dropping down and this year folks, it will be moving back up as well. they will keep this whole thing going for a while as the chimes of auld lang syne. if you know that song -- they know that one. they were ready for and they knew they would be performing in times where. >> they'll look fantastic and here we are in the new year. we will get back to some more shots around the world in a bit. the first let's talk about what's happening here in the bay area. tonight's big new year's firework show. >> it promises to be a spectacular midnight display. tom jensen is live in the city. you are near the large area and the ferry building. still all systems go with the rain pushing through? >> it looks like it is. good evening to both of you.

we just had a slight bit of rain earlier. really just a missed and the skies have cleared. the organizers here expect it to be very clear and no problems at all. all of the people here as excitement starts to build. we have food vendors and some of the novelty vendors out here for new year's eve. and the crowds are starting to pick up. they're hoping for another night of clear skies like we had this past fourth of july. it was raining last new year's eve and sometimes the fog and the rain and the low cloud cover can block the view of largest rockets that explode higher in the sky. 1000 feet for those longest shooting 10 inch shells. and a warning. police are deterring drivers off of treasure island. no parking anymore on treasure island in your bra way not

block. know where to park so they are deterring folks off of there who try to get onto the island. folks are not going to find a lot of parking down here around the embarcadero. the police have blocked off a lot of the street crossings and there's a lot of places where people could pull in and park before but now are blocked off with the bicycle lanes now. they are also 10 people to try to find other locations. it will be a clear night so they're not expecting any issues. so any high point within the city would be a good viewing point or even in the east bay where you can see across the bay. it should be a spectacular show . now less than three hours away. the anticipation is growing and the crowds are growing and we expect the crowds to get even larger over the next couple of hours. that's pretty cool. but what will the weather be like for those watching the fireworks. will you need an umbrella.

what's it looking like out there? >> right now san francisco is starting to see clear skies. we had a few sprinkles moving by but here's the good news. no fog. you can see it. look from the east bay back across the bay bridge now we did have a few showers and x- ray rain around the tri-valley and still a bit of that moving north of walnut creek. you see it there with a view sprinkles near the san rafael bridge. but the more substantial showers was about two hours ago. there's a look at the sprinkles tom was talking about. that's looking to the north now. and from here a few chances of showers going toward napa county but by midnight we should see partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the low 50s around san francisco. so quite a change from the same time last year when we were deal dealing with lighting conditions around the bay area. not so much for this new year's day. tomorrow will be a dry day and then the rain makes a come back tuesday into wednesday. and for a big change it will be the temperatures with cold air

the deck of the barge. it's a show that is a lively paste. a lot of music that people will really like. >> 18 has been working to prepare for the show at an undisclosed location. >> we have 18 people out here for two days and will be off the pier tonight. >> we asked about the planning that goes into it. >> about 90 days is a lead time now. this is a show we do on a yearly basis for the city of san francisco. we are thinking about it all the time. as we receive new products we think that would be great in san francisco to display. >> what about the conditions for people to see the show? >> i think it's about perfect it >> near the ferry building is about the spot. >> they are high enough and they will interfere with the highest 10 inch display shells. so we are very fortunate. it was very rainy last year on new year's eve and we are feeling great that we are in a

there are five victims in the car that crashed but they were all taken to the hospital but no officers were hurt. also in antioch overnight a fiery car crash. it happened on highway 4. people police are not releasing details but two cars were involved in both cars engulfed in flames after the collision. the high will shut down and we reach out for more information. >> the blazes out cleanup underway at a beauty salon in san jose. a two alarm fire broke out at the bank of beauty around 630 a.m.. the businesses in a commercial building just off almaden expressway. the fire was under control and under two hours. no one was hurt in the cause of the fire is still under investigation. okay destructive scene in san jose with a driver crashing into a crowded denny's restaurant during the busy breakfast out but this was the scene at denny's restaurant on saratoga avenue just after 9:00 a.m. this morning. that's new strawberry park and

highway 280. please say that car plowed up the ramp and smashed through the entrance of that restaurant. please say luckily no one was in the waiting area but the toy machine and you box were destroyed. no one was hurt. >> we were very scared and panicking. couldn't even open the door because people get shaken up. but everybody left. some people are just cleaning up. >> the restaurant is closed for repairs tonight. please have not revealed the identity of the driver or what caused the crash. >> for parents with young children you got to get creative and how you celebrate new year's eve. one option in san jose was heading down to the children's discovery museum for the noon years eve. they held down at 11 a.m., noon and at three p.m. with a ball drop and confetti. party hat making and the usual exhibits. also an opportunity to learn

mile journey down colorado boulevard. the theme of this year's parade is celebrating a world of music. the universal language. audra mcdonald is grand marshal. millions of people tune in to watch the rose parade every year on new year's day. maybe you do. but what they don't always get to see is the weeks and months of preparation. dana williams was in pasadena for the praise 100 35th year and she is a firsthand look at how the floats come to life thanks to the volunteers who make it happen. >> every inch of every float is covered with natural materials on the more than 130,000 roses in individual files just like this one. >> the files have convenient pics on the end so i can stick them in. >> catherine has been working on floats since she was 14 years old. >> i love this process. >> she says it's not the floats themselves that are her

favorite part. >> people come from all around the world to see the floats and see the parade. it brings so many people together which i really love. >> she's one of hundreds of volunteers who put in countless hours of work to trim, glue and help place every little paddle. >> we layer them one of the other so they look like feathers so they have a ruffle but are kind of flat. >> is what represents the san diego zoo left the lights. all the animals from the polar bear to the orangutan are actually from san diego. >> conservation always begins with people. this is a wonderful collaboration with the rose parade to get our message of conservation to that global audience. >> minute these thoughts have been here in pasadena since mid december. >> after all the hard work is done in the sleepless nights. when we see get all raised up and hits colorado boulevard, it's like a baby is being born or graduating from college. it's very emotional. >> scotched is the way is the mastermind on the floors on san diego zoo float. he's been doing this for 13 years. >> is like a holy grail. we work our whole lives with

the hope to get here and for me to be here to do this is a dream come true. >> it's when the floats are finally started up and moved outside and in front of the public for the very first time. >> what you think the butterflies made out of? >> that it all comes together. >> when you are up close it all looks like work. so it looks like a whole you have to put a flower in or surface you have to cover with a pencil. and then when you step back and you look at the whole experience it's moving and incredible. >> even after the floats make it onto the street volunteers of put on finishing touches almost until the start of the parade. beautiful stuff. still a head still ahead we will show you how people are eager to welcome the new year

in downtown san jose the countdown to the new year started hours early at 4:00 p.m.. wife 4:00 p.m. because that is when it was midnight in ireland. more than mother people raised a glass at the irish pub to embrace the new year. many told us the exit prefer celebrating in the afternoon. >> i think it's great because i'm old now and i can't say up until midnight so i think 4:00 p.m.

with over 14 million. i guess i just feel good that the american people got up. they've been through a rough time. >> dr. jill biden also encourage people to be kind to one another. took one of the california law starting tomorrow bans people from carrying guns in most public voices. the band prohibits people from carrying concealed firearms in 26 public places including parks, playgrounds, banks and zoos. this is regardless of whether the person has a concealed weapon permit. the law takes effect new year's day tomorrow even as a challenge plays out in court. a u.s. district judge issued a ruling to block the law arguing it violates the second amendment but yesterday a federal appeals court put a hold on that ruling. the terms on both sides are set to file arguments in january and february. we are less than three hours from the huge midnight fireworks display in san

francisco. and rob you have given people and early music present. >> were talking about the difference a year makes. last year it was flooding and rough weather. but we can still see san francisco and that's a good sign. right now with partly cloudy skies a few parts of the bay area seeing a few scattered showers. some downpours in the tri- valley early this evening. san jose at 54 degrees now. we have colder temperatures on the web. the numbers we sing outside right now could be where high temperatures are later on this week. walnut creek with the wet camera lens. 53 we showers to the north wet roads around dublin and pleasanton. back over to san francisco a gorgeous view looking west at 54 currently. here's what the showers are now near north toward solano county and into napa county. there's the less of it and the partly cloudy skies around midnight. watch out for some areas of fog heading into the first date of

the 2024. areas of fog with 40s for more places to start. more sunshine unlike the overcast skies today. it could get close to 60 tomorrow in san jose. upper 50s from san francisco to oakland. tomorrow is a mild day temperature wise. a dry day and then everything starts to change. tuesday into wednesday will have a powerful looking storm system that will drop in bringing in rain like last friday. tuesday afternoon the rain starting off in the north day. the peak of the rain on top of the tuesday evening commute. maybe isolated thunderstorms in play by wednesday morning. a chance of thunderstorms still ongoing into wednesday morning. impacting the wednesday morning commute before showers should

start to shut down heading towards when that. rain expectations with the midweek storm with a lot of red on the map. again this is like what we had last friday and saturday. a good chance that most of the bay area could be close to an inch of rain and made up to 1-2 inches of rain in the north and east by mountains and hills. here's the good news. not only are we finally getting the rain but colder air associated with that midweek storm and especially as we head toward next weekend it could finally bring some significant snow to the seer. bay area rain averages are about 80 percent of average. but the snowpack is still 28%. here's the good news as we head towards midweek although we will see winter storm warnings returning for travel plans. by midweek may be a foot of snow coming down and something we haven't seen for much of december is the potential of significant sierra snow. one way we will know the snow levels are dropping is high temperatures dropping through the week as we see rain returning tuesday into wednesday and the second potentially colder and windier storm as we head toward next

as we close at 2023 there is a lot of buzz about what's going to happen in space in 2024 including the first humans in a fly over the moon since the days of apollo. we cover aviation with tom castillo and a lot of this is centered around elon musk. >> you must own spacex and they provide the only way american

astronauts and right now get to space on an american rocket. and america's future hopes and dreams for space depend on spacex. that rocket roar and cheering coming from south texas in november was for a much improved second test of elon musk's starship after the first starship exploded shortly after left out. nasa and america struck their dreams to that's basic rocket. the next flight will be early next year. then late in the year nasa's artemis astronauts will loop around the moon. in 2022 and artemis test flight orbited the moon with no crew. that's the spaceship that would take the artemis to crew around the moon for the first time in more than 50 years.

the u.s. military says its forces opened fire on who the rebels in the red sea today. central command said the rebels attacked a cargo ship and the second attack on the ship this weekend. the crew of the uss destroyer shut down two missiles and today for small boats attacked the ship. rebels fired on navy helicopters that came to help and the crews return fire sinking two of the boats, and those on board. this is the 23rd with the attack on international shipping since november 19 for the first time u.s. forces have killed those fighters. drug no video offering a grim reminder that the war between russia and ukraine show no signs of letting up. just released video captures the moment missiles hit a small border city in russia 25 miles from ukraine. russia is blaming ukraine for

sharon is no longer more fortunate than those without a place to live. >> the front seat. that's mine. it goes all the way back. >> because she no longer has a place to live. this past fall sharon's longtime partner ron passed away. if you months later she was forced to leave their home of 12 years. her car and friends catches his work sharon and her 18-year-old grandson have been spending their nights for the past two months. but every sunday evening you still find sharon on martin luther king jr. way doing what she has always done. providing a homemade meal. although now courtesy of a woman without a home. >> i don't look at it as being a poor me pity party. i don't look at it like that.
