laura and marcus have the day off. uc berkeley police closed the people's park overnight. >> this is in preparation for long-opposed construction of student housing. today in the bay's thom jensen is there this morning. police have arrested several people? >> reporter: yes, good morning, kris and scott. they arrested seven people. they were taken into custody and taken to the north county jail to be booked, processed and released for misdemeanor charges of trespassing. two of them also for failure to disperse. they are stacking these shipping containers two-high and cabling them together all the way around the park. it will take a few days to get this work done to keep people out. take a look at the video we got overnight showing the crews moving in and beginning to tear

down structures and take down unoccupied tents. many of those items were placed into boxes and hauled away, and some trees were removed and all that work done now. this unfolded as police and chp officers barricaded every street within two blocks of people's park, and several clusters of protesters who oppose the university building a housing project at the park have been showing up and at times clashing with officers. >> folks here know they are trespassing, and they were given an opportunity to leave, and we hope they continue to leave peacefully and abide by the law. >> reporter: you are looking at more video of the tents being taken away, like i was talking about. several streets close to the park will be closed to traffic for the next three to four days while the crews continue to build the parameter with the double-stacked shipping

containers. a state appeals court last year blocked the university from its $312 million plan. after the ruling, the state supreme court agreed to decide if the college could build the housing. in a statement uc berkeley chancellor said the school moved to cliche the barricade in the park in order to minimize disruption to the public and our students when we are eventually cleared to resume the construction. opponents of the project say the university should consider other sites to put this housing project on because they say this park has been an important place for people to gather and also a safe haven for unhoused for several decades. we're live in berkeley, thom

jensen for "today in the bay." >> thank you, thom. >> we will continue to follow this story on the air and online, at nbcbayarea.com. we are looking live over san francisco this morning where you don't see any clouds in the sky. that means the eat just evaporated or went away, kari. it was cold last night. >> yeah, it will be cold for the next several mornings. we have another cold front dipping in now and that will give us a little chill over the next few days. it's producing a few spotty light showers over the north bay, and it will continue to fall apart as it moves through. we are in for sunshine into the afternoon. temperatures going from upper 40s at 9:00 to highs reaching near 60 degrees. we will talk about that rain coming back in a few minutes. now, cinthia, you are tracking a crash in the south bay? >> yeah, we will stay in san

josé. this is the northbound 101 direction before you get to the mckee avenue off-ramp. we can see the sensors picking up on the traffic there. the number two lane is blocked as crews try to get on to the scene and move the car in the way of traffic building there. there was one crash and a couple other crashes behind that as you made your way down through southbound 101. we will get another check on traffic coming up, but now back to you. >> thank you. we are hearing from the man accused of killing tuan le while he was working an under recovery burglary case on friday. we expect allen brown to appear in court, and opd says more arrests could come soon. a san josé police chief is

calling for more transparency. the chief is urging changes which would allow him and his department to disclose additional information normally redacted in complaints made public. back in november a former police officer mcnamara was dismissed after racist text messages were discovered, and the publicly released texts required redactions, and that left questions, and the bulk of the messages were exchanged with a former sjpd officer that left the department in 2020 and was employed as an officer in another state, and to his knowledge that person is no longer employed at that agency and there's an investigation into a current employee that received messages from mcnamara. he says that investigation is subject to legal rules of limited information release. in a statement he said, quote, i have called for law changes that

would allow police chiefs the ability to release more information in cases like this where details are currently shielded by complex laws and rules regulating disclosure. >> we want to make sure that justice was given out equally between all of the officers involved, and often what we see is he was not able to release but that one officer when there were two other officers involved. if we can know everybody, we know what is going on. >> that officer has been gone since 2020, but the chief previously announced he was working to strip mcnamara of his certification which would make it impossible for him to seek employment as a law enforcement officer in any other department. 6:08 on your thursday morning. this morning hezbollah is following the retaliation

following the execution of a hamas leader. sources telling nbc news that israel was behind the operation to kill him, but did not notify the u.s. until the operation was already under way. antony blinken once again headed to the middle east. it's his fourth visit to the region since the conflict between israel and hamas broke out october 7th. his travel will include a stop in israel and a number of stops around the middle east. new at 6:00, marin county looking to change limits on short-term rentals. the board of supervisors is set to hold a meeting to discuss a special ordinance that would limit short-term rentals as less than 30 days. supervisors will talk about directing those rental spots to certain areas and cap the number

of rentals in other areas. motels, bed & breakfast will not face the same limitations. a live look at walnut creek this morning. we were talking about the weather and the clear skies, and then i happened to catch kari mention it's also time to take down your christmas decorations. >> yeah, kris said she had not done it yet, and i did it last weekend because my policy is it has to be done before the new year. that's it. we're starting off with cold temperatures this morning, and dublin and livermore, 39 degrees. it's 45 in morgan hill, and 51 in san mateo. really just depends on where you are. we have seen a couple light spotty showers in parts of the north bay, and that will be clearing out as we go into this afternoon. cool temperatures, and this weekend we will see the rain coming back on saturday. not a big storm, but it will bring in at least 0.1 of an inch

of rain with chilly temperatures. going into next week, we will have frosty mornings as our skies clear and dry out. we are headed for the upper 50s in castro valley, but it will be bright and sunny. we will talk more about the next round of rain coming up in a few minutes. cinthia has been tracking how the gas prices are trending at the pump this morning. >> things are around the $3 and $4 dollar mark, and we are going to wake up the prompter in a little bit but we will get that check for you in a second. let's check on the roadways because there are problems i am concerned about. in san josé, northbound 101, a couple minutes ago i showed you the live camera. there are headlights out there on the mckee road off-ramp, and the number two lane is blocked and the sensor is picking up on the slow and go. you can take 280 or northbound

forecast. we see a lot of headlights coming northbound 101 in san josé. the crash is in the clearing stages after you pass the golf course there to your right. the traffic is slowly coming on to the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights is not been turned out yet, so we hope it's a smooth thursday commute. the nasdaq is down for a fourth straight session. the dow dropped nearly 300 points, and the nasdaq off 1%, and the s&p almost 1%. big name tech stocks like apple got hard hit struggling to start the year. their valuations may be a bit over stretched. it's uncertain when the federal reserve might start cutting rates. apple is down 4% for the week. in the meantime, apple agreeing to settle a lawsuit alleging it profited from gift card scams. reuters reported appear sl drafting the terms of a

settlement in a case that alleges the company routinely kept the 30% commission for itself letting the scammers keep 70%. callers would sound urgent and fool people into buying itunes gift cards and read the code off to them. victims lost hundreds of millions of dollars. >> that's frustrating. eli lilly is launching a website among the high demands, and it provides telehealth doctors to prescribe the drugs, including its prescription delivery service. the company will use a third-party service to provide the telehealth doctors and doctors and providers will not financially benefit from prescribing eli lilly drugs.

>> absolutely. >> yes. >> amazing woman and mom, and her daughters are a representation of all of the love and care you have given them. >> that is so -- >> yeah. >> thank you, all of you, and thank you guys so much in the news room. you guys are nuts. thank you. we will give you sunshine today, kris. let's get a look at our forecast. it's going to be chilly. i know the cold weather is not your favorite, but at least we don't have you standing out in the cold this morning. we are starting out with a live look in san josé, christmas in the park is still lit up. over the next several days we will see at least some dry weather, but the rain we have seen recently helped us out in the north bay, with the rainfall deficit we are dealing with. now we caught up, and we are at 12.7 inches of rainfall so far for the water year.

we do still need a lot more rainfall in oakland to catch up to normal, over 3.5 inches rain needed to get back to normal. we are also slightly below what we need for now in the rest of the bay area. we are also in a very active pattern where even this morning we have seen light rain moving through, and a lot of it falling apart. most of us will not see that rain. our temperatures are chilly right now, in the upper 30s in the tri-valley, and low to mid-40s in much of the north bay. this afternoon we will head to 60 degrees for much of the bay area. about the same tomorrow as well as the dry weather continues. we may see a quick round of light showers moving through the north bay. again, early tomorrow morning, while it does miss the rest of the bay area, we will have a chance of all of us getting in on some wet weather on saturday, and i know during the saturday afternoon, it's not the best

timing but it will move out quickly, and sunday is the day to make plans outside. we are tracking an active weather pattern next week with several storms coming in, and it looks to be beneficial for the sierra, and the bay area will only see maybe about 0.1 of an inch of rainfall. that saturday storm is not big enough to cancel any outdoor plans. if you are going to the sierra, heads up that saturday will be the day with hazardous travel. it does wrap up on sunday, and we are only looking at six to eight inches of snow. there's additional snowfall in next week's forecast that will hopefully help to try and catch us back up to our normal sierra snowpack. we are looking at a chance of showers for early tomorrow morning in the north bay, and other than that it will be mostly sunny, and more widespread rain in our saturday forecast, and on sunday into monday, it's dry. look at how cold it will be in the mornings, just a degree or two above freezing. now, cinthia, you have a couple

crashes you are tracking. that's right. we are watching a couple crashes in the east bay and north bay and south bay. let's take a look. this is at the dublin interchange, northbound 680, the counter commute direction but it's blocking lanes with some debris that came from the cars, and then westbound 580, there's a crash that you have to watch out for in the clearing stages. also in the clearing stages in san josé, northbound 101 after you pass the golf course, number two lane is blocked as they work to get the car out of the roadway. and it's smooth otherwise, and everybody taking bart, the green line. and then a surge in bay area workers using collaborative

welcome back. new this morning, as office vacancies soar and people still working from home, a new company is offering a variation on the work space, and it's called radious, and it launched here in the bay area. it will allow employees to rent

space in private homes and other places, kind of like airbnb for a work space. radious doesn't own the properties it lists online, and as the company's ceo explains, a number of the properties are in location that don't require a long commute. >> what we are finding is it's a combination of people really wanting to be together from time to time, maybe not five days a week, but they want to be together. their employers want them to have that in-person collaboration, and companies don't necessarily want to pay for office space seven days a week if their employees are only using it once or twice, and employees if they don't want to commute long distances either, we solve both problems. >> as we have reported earlier this week, the office vacancy situation in the north and south bay has just gotten worse. according to a new study, nearly

tense moments overnight as uc berkeley shuts down people's park. we are live with the details on the arrests and legal battle still playing out. two men charged with killing an oakland police officer set to face a judge. the promise now being made by the district attorney to get justice. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. happy thursday to you.

i am scott mcgrew. i am kris sanchez. marcus and laura are off this morning and the rest of the week. we want to get to the breaking news in the ongoing battle over control of people's park. overnight uc berkeley shutdown the area. >> we learned people, protesters have been taken into custody, and today in the bay's thom jensen is live there. tell us what you know. >> reporter: good morning, scott and kris. you can see they are bringing more shipping containers in right now. this is the type of work going on over the next three to four days as they try and close down the park, and then wait for a court ruling before they can begin construction. they did arrest, police did, at least took into custody seven people cited for misdemeanors, trespassing, a couple failures to disperse, and also taken to the north county jail where they will be processed and released in oakland.

crews were dismantling structures and this unfolded after midnight when chp and police officers barricaded the streets close to the people's park. protesters have been showing up and clashing with police at times. here's more clearing efforts taking place overnight, and you can see police physically going into tents, and meanwhile occupiers also being forced down and out of makeshift tree houses, all of this to make way of student housing which uc berkeley said is desperately needed. >> we have an urgent need for housing at uc berkeley, and the university is donating a good portion of the land to a nonprofit developer to create housing for low income people, and it's an important project for the community and university. >> reporter: several trees were

also taken down overnight. the university officials said the streets surrounding the park will be closed to traffic for the next three to four days while crews bring in the stacked shipping containers and put them around the park. you might recall last year a state appeals court blocked the university from the $400 million plan to build a 17-story 1,100 bed complex for students in the park, and governor newsom has state he is in support of the university's plan. and the construction cannot begin until all the legal issues are resolved, and the courts repeatedly affirmed the university. opponents say the people's park has been a safe haven for the

60 in concord. cinthia, you are tracking a new crash in san rafael? >> yeah, about 30 minutes ago there was one crash and a couple cars got involved, and now another one is on southbound 101. as you are making your way tara linda, you need to be careful with what is going on with that scene. the log says, the chp log says there's fluid in the lanes so they called the fire department. i will continue to check on this one and see what is going on, otherwise things are in the clearing stages in san josé after a crash in the northbound direction after mckee. this morning one of the suspects accused in the murder of an oakland police is due in court. >> bob redell joins us from the news room. the police department said there could be more arrests in connection with the case. >> you are correct. this investigation has not ended and is still ongoing and there could be more suspects taken into custody. right now three men have been

charged in connection with the murder of the police officer tuan le outside a cannabis dispensary in oakland. two of the three suspects are facing murder charges, including this man, 27-year-old mark sanders of tracy who is accused of shooting and killing the officer. a third man is being charged with burglary. in a press conference yesterday, alameda district attorney said he is being charged with special circumstances and special allegations. one of the suspects was arrested with officer le's handcuffs and that the reports of sanders' violent past are true. >> he has a prior arrest history that does include the killing of another and additional other violent crimes associated with that individual. >> speaking as the elect the district attorney of alameda county, i will leverage the full

weight of my office against these people that we believe ruthlessly and wantonly murdered an officer of the law. >> and sanders will serve life without the possibility of parole if they can prove he knew le was an officer. reporting live, bob redell for "today in the bay." >> bob, we will be there at the hearing. thank you. an east bay cop accused of trying to shoot his wife and other police officers in a standoff is set to appear in court today. last month a former pittsburgh police officer barricaded himself inside his pleasant hill home. he was allegedly locked in a 36-hour standoff with police where at one point he tried to shoot at officers allegedly. no officers were hurt. he will face a judge at 1:30 this afternoon.

it's 6:37. a major boost for senate candidate adam schiff. he just accepted an endorsement from the united farm workers. it's the largest farm workers union in the country. as of last month polls show schiff is leading among hispanic voters. he scored this endorsement after talking with farm workers and promising to make immigration a top priority. looking at san francisco this morning, it's dry right now but it is cold. make sure to grab your jacket as you head out. you might need the umbrella at some point? >> yeah, it will be nice for the warriors game later tonight, but also very chilly. as we make plans for the weekend, we will see temperatures in the mid-50s with breezy winds and overall a clear sky. that does continue into tonight as we drop down to about 53 to

54 degrees. maybe wrap up the weekend with the 49ers game at levi's stadium. temperatures will be nice, up to 60 degrees. a little breezy, though. at times the winds up to about 15 to 20 miles per hour. right along the coast, a heads up that there will be rain in the forecast on saturday. we're in the upper 50s. it will be cooler on sunday with a high of only about 54 degrees. but if your weekend plans take you to tahoe, look at the overnight temperatures. 4 degrees. yeah, it will be cold. we are also looking for more snow and hazardous travel on saturday, so hopefully you are already there and skiing. sunday as you are coming back, it will reach up to 27 degrees. cinthia, you are tracking several issues on the roads? yeah, this is one is one i want you to avoid for next weekend. if you are going southbound 680, this is going to be closed from there in dublin all the way to

today. that's your time to go for a walk. we will get a look at what to expect as our next round of rain comes in this weekend in just a few minutes. we are watching more cars here in oakland around 880 definitely joining the commute on this thursday. let's check on e shore highway times from highway 4 over to the bay bridge, about a 20-minute ride. making your way northbound 880 to the bay bridge down from 238, it will be under 20 minutes. former president donald trump asking the u.s. supreme court to overturn colorado's ruling which removed him from the ballot. the state supreme court ruled last month trump is disqualified because of his actions leading up to the january 6th attacks. the colorado panel based its decision on the constitution's 14th amendment that bans anybody that takes part in an insurrection from running for federal office. the trump campaign calls that

but once again the rain has fallen apart and we will see the sky clearing as we go throughout today. our temperatures headed close to 60 degrees. we will be keeping those jackets on throughout the day, and not much of a change tomorrow either as we look at our forecast at the bottom of the screen, more days with highs only in the 50s and low 60s. now we may wake up again early tomorrow morning with another quick round of rain, mostly for the north bay, clearing for the afternoon and then the rest of the bay area will see rain on saturday. this is right in the middle of the afternoon. it looks fairly light, though, and is not as significant as what we saw in the previous runs of the computer models. sunday and monday is dry, and then the middle of next week the active weather pattern continues. looking at the weekend, what we are expecting in terms of how much rain, look at that, it's a few 0.01 of an inch of rain, and maybe up to 0.1 of an inch of rain. i wouldn't cancel any plans for

that. if you are going to the sierra, it will be very difficult to travel on saturday. if you can get there on friday and come back on sunday, conditions look better. we will get about six to eight inches of snow in between. next week we will have additional snowfall, possibly an additional two inches of snow. our overnight lows, just a degree or two above freezing, so very chilly with highs in the mid-50s and more rain chances for the middle of next week. in san francisco, expect it to be breezy and cool with today's high temperature up to about 60 degrees. cinthia, you're tracking a new crash in the east bay? >> this is the commute direction along highway 4. just as you pass pittsburg and approach this on-ramp, we are picking up on the slow and go traffic. crews are arriving on the scene and helping the parties

involved. not too much of a backup. grant line road over to 680, a 20-minute drive for you there. looking at under 15 minutes southbound 680 and along highway for as well. there's something to be concerned with on bart, the green line for issues coming out of berryessa. and then excepting applications for a new pilot program for discounted fares, and it will give people 50% discounts. you have to be between 18 and 64 living in the bay area, and you do have to meet certain income requirements, but you can submit an application online. we are following multiple breaking news stories, including word of a possible school shooting in iowa.

welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at the top stories, including breaking news. a controversial move. uc berkeley moved into people's park overnight, and police officers were there as were protesters. >> in all of the preparations for the long-opposed construction of student house something what this is about. today in the bay's thom jensen has been live out there all morning. thom, were you there for the arrests? what are you seeing now? >> reporter: you can see that, you know, they moved those people out. they did arrest seven people, they were detained by police. they were all charged with trespassing, and two people were also charged with failing to disperse. all misdemeanors taken to the north county jail in oakland where they will be processed and likely released at that point. this work has been going on all

day. you can see the moving containers that they are bringing in here, stacking two deep to keep people out once they got everybody out. take a look at the video they got overnight showing crews moving in and tearing down structures. there was a tree -- the trees that were going to be taken down are now down. police and chp officers barricaded every street within two blocks from people's park. several clusters of protesters that oppose the university building a housing park have been showing up and clashing with police and workers at time. you can see police physically going into tents, and meanwhile occupiers are also being forced out of the makeshift tree house. all of this to make way for a student housing project that uc

berkeley says is desperately needed. in a statement uc berkeley's chancellor said the school moved to clear and barricade the park to minimize disruption for the public and our students when we are eventually cleared to begin the project. this park, people's park, has been a safe haven for the unhoused and demonstrators for decades to come, and the university now waiting for the court's final decision before they can move forward with construction. >> thank you, thom. we are getting reports of an active shooter at a high school in iowa. these are live pictures at perry high school in perry, iowa, and that's about 25 miles outside of des moines. so far no word on injuries, and first responders have been on scene. we will follow this story as it unfolds and bring you updates.
