instant of gun violence is perry, iowa, this morning a gunman opened fire at perry high school on the first day back for students after the holiday break. at this point sources tell nbc news the shooter is believed to be a student at that school and is also dead from an apparent gunshot wound. self-inflicted. three other people are injured including two students we're told and one school administrator. >> following the latest developments is nbc news correspondent vaughn hillyard outside perry high school for us. what's the latest you're hearing from the scene. >> reporter: three injured from our understanding, at least three injured here at this time, multiple individuals who were shot this morning shortly before 8:00 a.m. local, individuals who were taken by ambulance but also air lifted here from perry, iowa, into des moines, 40 miles from here, this is a community of perry of about 6,000 individuals, the high school

where the shooting took place shares a campus with the middle school, the shooting took place about 20, 25 minutes before the school day actually started, this was the first day back for these students, back from their winter break, but this is where some of the details we're just working to put together in realtime, as the shooting unfolded, students and faculty members were making their way on to campus, it's not clear whether there was any individuals who were specifically targeted or the motive of this shooter, but the shooter to our understanding we're told by authorities did in fact died of a self-inflicted gunshot wounds. >> what have you been able to hear from parents and students there at the school about what they went through today, vaughn? >> reporter: right, there were some parents who were waiting on the perimeter of this campus here as there were multiple police agencies on hand, the students who were here on campus already at that hour were put on to lockdown, we talked to some of them as they were waiting for

details from their students inside and their students made their way out some of them were beginning to share some stories. i'll let you hear from one of the students from the high school, ava. take a listen. >> people are calling their parents, friends, and then we hear he's down, you can go out. and i run and you can just see glass everywhere. blood on the floor. i get to my car and they're taking a cot out of the auditorium. shot in their leg. >> reporter: we're at the gas station just about two blocks from here where one of the workers at the store told us that several of the students ran over to the gas station after this shooting unfolded. this was a complex situation here, one that's still being investigated of course the fbi from the local field office's on

hand as part of this investigation and we're expecting here within the next hour a press conference that will include iowa governor kim reynolds. we'll bring you the details as they come. >> vaughn, thank you. today we're rerng new details about some high-profile people referenced in case connected to convicted sex offender jeffrey epstein. >> a judge has unsealed some documents. this is just the first batch of documents expected to be release. who was mentioned and what does it mean? here to answer those questions nbc investigative correspondent tom winter and angela cendella is with us as well tom, there are some big names that have been mentioned. . many linked to jeffrey epstein. did we learn anything new. >> when you look at former presidents, bill clinton and donald trump. we have been reporting for years

bill clinton's travels aboard jeffrey epstein's plane with secret service detail. those names aren't new. one of the things that we've been looking for, any high-profile names linked to epstein in a criminal way? we didn't see that last night, in addition to that, what were some of the underlying things that were talked about as part of this civil suit between virginia and ghislaine maxwell, any sort of back and forths there that could give us better insight into the sexual trafficking and to that point we did get some additional detail but all consistent with what we knew before. >> angela, the legal implications, these names publicly for the first time, could this lead to any more legal action? >> so, as tom said, we don't expect to see any criminal legal action coming from this, also

because the fbi and other investigators had access to this information even though it was sealed to the public, also from this information there were two criminal prosecutors, maxwell and epstein who were prosecuted that literally came from that defamation lawsuit, now in terms of civil litigation, that's always possible in new york there's no statute of limitations until march of 2025, it's certainly possible. >> tom, as we mentioned, this is the first batch of documents that were being unsealed, we expect more and do we know when. >> as soon as today the process is not up to us but the attorneys, are we making sure we're following the letter of the law, as far as what we can redact and unseal and the two parties have to agree and then they file it to the docket, i

albuquerque we're dealing with wet pavement. amarillo, tonight it will head into the plains. the number of people in the winter weather advisories and watches, watches popping up in areas of the east, later tonight from amarillo to wichita, the area that will get the snow accumulations. here's our computer forecast map, the blended model, an idea of who's going to get wet snow, in the west, huge storm coming in throughout the next couple of days on the heels of this one. sierra and cascades showing for additional heavy snow. over northern new mexico, into the plains, not a lot of snow but when it reaches the east coast it blows up and gets bigger, colder air is in place and for the first time this winter a significant snowstorm in areas that would have had two

or three by now, new england will be questionable especially near the coast. big cities along i-95. new york to d.c. 0 to 2 inches. once you get away from the coast, where the travel issues will be inland. as far as the ice goes, our friends in appalachian will have the issues. asheville, boone, roanoke, they get a lot of ice storms in those areas. so, as we go through tonight, we track the snow, wichita, through friday, it weakens over kansas city, snow showers around st. louis and then this weekend, saturday night is when all the heavy snow will be falling in the northeast. >> hopefully some snowmen in our future maybe not new york. >> no, you'll have to travel. time now for money minute.

bombings that killed dozens on of people. nbc news hasn't verifyd that claim of responsibility. the explosions happened during a ceremony for a general who had been killed by a u.s. drone strike back in 2020. the third area lebanon where a funeral was held today for the senior hamas leader killed in a drone strike u.s. officials say israel is behind that strike. israel's military still hasn't commented on what happened. let's bring in matt bradley, he joins us from tel aviv, matt, lot happening ahead of secretary blinken's arrival. talk to us about the situation that he's walking into. >> reporter: he's coming into a male maelstrom, the three major events that have happened, the one thing that's connecting all of these together, the one nation is iran, they have their hands in each of these things not just the one explosion that

happened in iran itself, you mentioned those three events, explosions in the past three days, i would add two more, first of all there's that continuing conflict between hamas and israel in the gaza strip, hamas like hezbollah, like these other groups, is backed by iran and you have the houthis in yemen, we've seen them firing shots and taking over ships, commercial vessels in the red sea and that's caused iran to deploy their own warship into the red sea and the u.s. to deploy their warship and to create a coalition of naval groups that could fight against the houthis to protect commercial shipping. secretary blinken coming into the region. this problem, blinken will be confronting is as wide as the region itself. we've seen so many wars in this region, i can't think of any

other time when we've seen a conflict enveloped the entire region. secretary blinken talking about providing humanitarian aid to gaza strip, those issues that are dire and talking about ever since october 7th, he'll be traveling around and not just to israel and some of these other countries but to places like turkey, jordan, qatar, uae, all part of this trip, egypt, because this isn't just an issue that faces israel and the gaza strip, this issue is besetting the entire region. >> matt bradley, thank you for laying it all out for us. here the u.s., another court battle over immigration is beginning between the state of texas and bidened a main administration. the doj suing the state of texas and the governor abbott over a law that he signed to allow

police to arrest migrants. morgan chesky, we've been reporting on the strain of the immigration system for weeks now, largely the impetus for the texas law, what reasons is the doj giving now for why it's challenging this law? >> reporter: in a word, they're calling it unconstitutional. doj stressing that it's the federal government's job to enforce borders, border security and that texas is overexceeding its authority by enacting this law which could go into effect in march of 2024, no surprise we have heard from governor abbott in response he said he likes his chances in court and we also heard from texas attorney general paxton who had this to say on social media. i'm prepared to fight the biden administration whose immigration disaster is leading our country to disaster. as you mentioned this is coming on the heels of record-breaking

months here that have hit this eagle pass sector especially hard, we do know that there's been a slight dip in illegal crossings over the past week or so. no one anticipates this lull to last much longer. >> i know you got to also see firsthand what law enforcement is dealing with at the border, what are they telling you? >> reporter: we've imbedded with the texas tactical many reen unit, patrols the rivers and the troopers tell me their job went law enforcement chasing smugglers to potential cartel members, to now one of almost a humanitarian effort and here's what one of them had to say about their ongoing mission. >> do you kind of feel caught in the middle sometimes? >> most definitely. >> how so? >> you know, my job goes from criminal to a humanitarian

this is the fast forward on nbc news daily. protesters have been attempting to stop a major student housing project from being built there. nbc bay area's thom jensen is at the park with the very latest. >> it's been a hotly contested piece of land over the years. we're seeing right now, just bringing more of the shipping containers and building a wall around the entire park. two shipping containers, 15 to 18 feet high to make sure people don't get back into the park. police have removed all the people living in tents and a tree house. seven people were arrested fortress passing overnight.

two people were also cited for misdemeanor failing to disperse. all of them taken to north county where they were charged and released. uc wanting to build 1,100 bed student housing complex here. before they can start that work though, they'll put this perimeter around. then they have to wait for the court to come in and tell them it's okay to start construction. thank you. here's some other stories you need to know about today. crews have finished installing nets on the golden gate bridge to prevent suicides. bay area farms devastated by bird flu outbreak. first, an officer is going to appear in court after having a stand-off with police. this happened last month in pleasant hill. the former police officer barricaded himself in his house after shooting his wife. he then had a 36-hour stand-off with police. officers and s.w.a.t. team

members left. and then the next day when they returned, he tried to shoot at officers. thankfully no officers were hurt. his wife was released from the hospital. he will face a judge at 1:30 this afternoon. we, of course, will bring you updates on the story in our evening newscast. the u.s. is seeing an outbreak of the avian flu and now it is ravaging chicken farm in sonoma county. some stores have a shortage of eggs and experts are predicting it will spread across the bay area. more than 1 million chickens have been euthanized in sonoma county already since thanksgiving. some stores in the county are now completely out of eggs. grocery stores in other bay area counties are fully stocked. but the director of the farm bureau says consumers will be impacted soon. crews have finished installing stainless steel nets on both sides of the golden gate bridge. the barrier spans the full 1.7 mile lanes of the bridge.

in fact officials say his father is the only person who will face charges. he's facing several firearm-related charges. davis is legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm. new york city adams is filing a $178 million against texas charter bus companies, to recoup all costs of providing emergency shelters and services to migrants who were transported by bus to new york. since the spring of 2022 texas governor greg abbott satd he's facilitating the transport of migrants to new york city, new york city said the money it's seeking will cover costs of new arrival as well. 29-year-old man has made history as the oldest person on record to hike the grand canyon

from rim to rim. he completed the 24-mile hike by walking over 21 hours over two days. the hike is known to be incredibly difficult. he says he stays healthy at his age by eating well, drinking water and sleeping eight hours each night. in today's daily health, parts of the u.s. are experiencing a dramatic rise in flu cases as americans return home from holiday gatherings. more than 30 states are reporting high level of flew activity. the west and southeast are some of the hardest hit regions, in fact the wave of flu, covid and rsv cases have led many hospitals and healthcare providers to reinstitute mask mandates. sam brock ins us from new orleans that currently has one of the worst flu outbreaks in the country. sam, what are you hearing there? >> reporter: doctors are surprised by how markedly ill

patients are going to the icu and the volume, i'm standing right now in front of children's hospital here in nola. they saw 175% increase, almost triple the number of flu cases in november, another 115% in december, you're talking about a massive swath of people who are spreading the virus right now and you did mention this is a regional issue right now, it tends to correlate with lower vaccination rates. but states like north carolina, south carolina, mississippi, alabama are all seeing this. over 4,000 people have died from the flu this year. doctors i'm talking to are saying this is starting to track out like in 2009. >> in the influenza circulating

of sentencing the 30-year-old to prison for attempted battery for substantial bodily harm when he unexpect edly jumped over both benches and tackled her. >> is he okay? >> a court-martial appearing injured as officers eventually subdued the defendant while helping the judge get back to her feet before escorting her out. the terrifying attack just the latest security scare for judges nationwide. last year, a man shot and killed a state judge at his home in maryland after the judge ruled against him in a child custody case. while in 2020, there was a horrifying attack in new jersey, where a disgruntled lawyer targeted federal judge esther salas, showing up at her home, shooting her husband multiple times, and killing her 20-year-old son.

judge salas told savannah about her efforts to help better protect the personal information of judges in a law named after her son, daniel, that has since been passed. >> what are you hoping will happen now? >> what i'm hoping will happen now is that we will expand these protections nationwide. this is a matter of life or death. >> reporter: wednesday's incident now raising new questions about security in courtrooms. in a statement, the las vegas court saying we are reviewing all of our protocols and will do whatever is necessary to protect the judiciary, the public, and our employees. >> the judge is expected to be okay and the attacker, he's apparently to be back in court on tuesday facing new charges. >> liz, thank you. the former president of harvard university is now speaking out about her resignation. in an op-ed for "the new york

times." claudine gay claimed the ents that led to her departure were quote, merely a single skirmish in a broader war to unravel public faith in pillars in american society. she acknowledged that she said she failed in her response to hamas' october 7th attack in israel. the response that she gave on capitol hill, gay was harvard's first black and second female president. she served six months on the job. a florida woman is suing hershey's for $5 million over what she claims is false advertising, she was hoping for this. a reese's halloween pumpkin, but this is what she says she got, a gob of chocolate and it turns out she's not the only one fighting back against this. >> reporter: a famous slogan, there's no wrong way to eat a reese's. >> there's no wrong way. >> reporter: but according to one lawsuit, there may be a

wrong way to package them. a woman is suing hershey saying this pumpkin shaped chocolate matches its packaging. she says in the class action lawsuit filed in florida she wouldn't have bought the peanut butter pumpkin if they didn't have a cute little pumpkin carving and hershey falsely represented several other products. she's not the only one complaining. >> oh, man. i thought it would have a face on it. >> reporter: the lawsuit citing wider grumbling on social media. >> it comes after a string of high-profile food advertising lawsuits in the last few years. against taco bell for its mexican pizza and burger king for its whopper claiming there wasn't as much food as

advertised. an attorney representing clients in those suits, taco bell's was voluntarily did missed and burger king's is ongoing. russo filed this hershey lawsuit telling the washington post the litigation is, quote, not a waste of time, saying, quote, there's no other way for us to stop the false advertising. >> i understand that it sounds silly, but if there were not a lawsuit there would be no way to keep a company like hershey in check for not having the packaging match what's on the inside. >> reporter: but actually getting results is another story. a woman also sued kraft heinz over vel vita mac and cheese that it took longer than the promised 3.5 minutes to make, the lawsuit was dismissed last year and a lawsuit claiming

telehealth company so customers can more easily get prescriptions. novo nordisk also offers a savings program for their drugs, ozempic and wegovy. and there are ongoing efforts by eli lilly and novo nordisk to make these drugs in oral versions as well as an easy alternative to the current injectables. lynn says she could have used other options after feeling dismissed by her doctor when she tried to question her weight loss medication. >> i told my physician i had heard a lot about mounjaro. and my physician just made an offhand joke that he had somebody he knew that had taken the drug and that was the end of the conversation. >> i think a lot of people think of obesity as an issue of willpower, it's not. 40% of adult americans have excess weight or obesity. that's a big number. >> reporter: lynn, who has been overweight her entire life, eventually got her medication adjusted. she has lost 65 pounds so far. >> at the correct dosage, it shuts off the constant thought

running ahead of his owners in oregon. plunging 300 feet down the side of a cliff, leo incredibly survived, but was stranded on a beach that first responders couldn't reach on foot. what were some of the challenges you were up against at that time? >> the tides. by the time we got out there, we probably lost 70 to 80% of the beach. >> reporter: but the team quickly mobilizing, deploying the rescue swimmer down from the helicopter. who then carefully approached leo on the beach, putting him in a basket and hoisting him to safety. >> the dog was scared, but generally seemed okay, and happy probably to be helped. >> reporter: but his ordeal nowhere near over. leo rushed to the closest emergency vet an hour away, he

an office site for the day. like an airbnb for flexible spaces. they don't lone or lease the properties. as the company ceo explains, a number of the properties are in locations that don't require long commutes. >> what we're finding is that it is a combination of people really wanting to be together from time to time. maybe not five days a week. but they want to be together. their employers really want to have that in-person collaboration. but companies don't necessarily want to pay for office space seven days a week. >> the company says it has seen a 33% growth across the bay area within the past month. meantime, a new report from commercial real estate companies show office vacancies are a real problem in the bay area. nearly 37% of downtown san francisco buildings are vacant. 27% in silicon valley.
