5:02 am
but that is already clearing. the rest of the day will be mostly sunny as we are in between storm systems moving through. you can see the dry air starting to come in. the next system is off the coast and that will be coming in tomorrow. as we get started, not as cold. upper 40s and low 50s for many of our microclimates. we've seen the clouds linger, so that's keeping those temperatures a up a few degrees for now. as we take a look at the highs this afternoon, we're headed for the upper 50s and low 60s. it is going to be a mild day. we'll talk about rain coming in for the weekend. cinthia has been tracking the roads. any issues popping up? >> there is something i want people to be aware of if you're coming out of livermore or heading toward the tri-valley. caution on highway 84, they're doing one lane control as they maybe work to move some equipment out of the way. we can see the sensors that are orange. be prepared to stop and follow all of the signals. let's go up to el cerrito.

5:04 am
gathering signatures. organizers tell us they're fed up not only with crime in oakland, but especially the recent shooting of oakland police officer tuan le, and the city dropping the ball on the grant to combat retail theft. one supporter points to what she describes as a lack of response from mayor thao's office when concerns are brought up and the fact that the city has remained without a permanent police chief since leronne armstrong was fired last year. >> i think people have just about had it. they can't tolerate this anymore. they've got small businesses that are suffering, they keep getting attacked over and over again. different communities are getting attacked. >> reporter: we looked at some of the stats in oakland. robberies increased by 38% from 2022 to 2023, burglaries increased by 23% as well, and motor vehicle thefts increased by 45%. we reached out to the mayor's office about this recall effort and the office responded with no

a follow-up to a breaking news story we brought you on thursday morning. protests continued late into the night at berkeley's people's park, after the university of california and dozens of police officers cleared it for housing construction. nearly 50 or so protesters gathered at the intersection of telegraph and dwight, facing off with officers in riot gear. you're seeing this historical video because the park had long been a place connected to free speech and has accounted as a de facto public park but the university owns the land. now you see shipping containers surrounding it to keep people out. the university plans to build housing for 1,100 students and some of the unhoused who call the 2.8 acre site home. >> you can build apartments a lot of other places, but you're doing it there. it's just a statement that we don't care, we don't care about the unhoused people, we don't care this is a symbolic park. >> the past needs to be
5:07 am
remembered but we shouldn't be trapped by it. this site is going to encompass so many elements of what is needed in berkeley now at the moment. >> the university had planned to build student housing there as early as the 1950s and they say they have the legal right to do that construction. it comes as they wait a state supreme court decision on legal challenges. the university's plan for the park is to preserve for than 60% of the site and revitalize the space, which they say will reinforce the park's history. you may be ringing in the new year with a gift you never wanted, as respiratory viruses continue to make the rounds, landing some people in the hospital. covid hospitalizations were up 12%, according to the last data available. flu hospitalizations were up 20%, though cases of rsv or respiratory virus are starting to stabilize across the country. the covid surge is happening as we're learning more about the effectiveness of the main covid treatment paxlovid.
5:08 am
a new study by researchers at ucsf shows that an antiviral pill, that antiviral pill, does not reduce the risk of long covid. researchers found just as many people who took paxlovid suffered lingering symptoms. specialist dr. peter chin-hong says the drug is still good at preventing severe disease in vulnerable people. >> so in those senses, i wish that they would show more of a benefit for chronic symptoms, but for those who are older and immune compromised, particularly those not vaccinated. paxlovid could mean the difference between life and death. >> dr. peter chin-hong and the other respiratory experts say if you have symptoms, mask up. if you are sick, stay home and test so that you know which treatment is the best for what you have. and you can get free testing and treatment for covid and flu at

big breakers for today. the beach hazard statement continues until this evening. we may also see some sneaker waves, which makes it very dangerous to be along the coastline. there's another storm out there, that one will be coming in for tomorrow. we'll start out with some dry conditions for today, but then as we go into tomorrow morning, into the afternoon, the rain will start to move in from north to south. by 1:00, we're seeing rain already in the north bay and continuing to work its way across the bay area for tomorrow afternoon into the evening. so more active and wet weather on the way. this will also have an impact on your weekend plans, so we'll talk more about that coming up. cinthia has a look at the gas prices you can expect at the pump this morning. >> it's the first weekend of the year and we're moving everybody forward with the cheapest gas prices we could find thanks to people that report them on gasbuddy.com. let's start in the north bay with $3.79 in vallejo. that's at the central gas on springs road. maybe you're taking that coming off of 80. let's go to san jose by
5:11 am
communications hill. you'll find $3.95 at the quick stop on pearl avenue. lastly, the vallejo on hesperian boulevard off of 880 in hayward will have you at $4.05 a gallon. it is still friday light but there is an issue for people going westbound 580 at the dublin interchange. we did have two cars involved in a crash. be careful, the commute coming out of the tri-valley and also caution if you're going down or up 84, you do have to be prepared to stop as they work the one lane traffic with crews on scene there trying to move some equipment out of the way. back to you. this morning we're picking the brain of one of the world's greatest minds. next, we talk to a former uc berkeley student who became close to that professor on the left. he invented the laser. plus, blasting off to the moon. the way you can take part

good friday morning to you. here is a look at our forecast this morning for menlo park. we're starting out cloudy and low 50s, calm wind, and overall visibility is looking pretty good. but we will see clouds through at least 9:00. the rest of the day is sunny and our temperatures will be warming up. maybe even slightly warmer than normal for this time of year. we'll talk about weekend rain in a few minutes. and i want to make sure you are aware you're going to have
5:15 am
to be prepared to stop if you're going in and out of 84 this morning. they are down to one lane traffic and we can see the sensors right there turning to red and orange. just watching for crews moving their equipment out of the way. i'll see how this impacts the rest of the morning commute and some predictive things i'm watching out for for the weekend coming up. in business news, we'll get the december jobs report here in about 15 minutes. the monthly unemployment numbers important to understanding our economy, and usually the bigger number of jobs added, the better. but with the fed trying to slow down the economy, a not too small, not too big number would be most welcome by wall street. and, yes, they do call it a goldilocks number. i want to show you a clip from an interesting interview with a filmmaker, a documentary about the inventor of the laser, dr. charles towns. a uc berkeley scientist who won
5:16 am
a peace prize. the documentary called "the marriage of a scientist". a documentarian and former student put it together. there he is on the right. i spoke to the filmmaker who says he got to know dr. towns by giving him rides around the uc berkeley campus. >> i got to know him while i was a student at uc berkeley and he was a professor there and i found out one of the professors on campus invented the laser. i asked him a lot of questions and we got to know each other. one day i saw him outside of a physics lecture and he asked me for car rides. >> what did you talk about in your car rides? just cal sports or lasers? >> sports probably wasn't his big interest. asked all sorts of questions on his discoveries from the laser, through his astronomy discoveries, like landing a man on the moon and the discovery of the black hole at the center of
5:17 am
our galaxy. i would ask him a lot of -- like you would ask a father for advice, someone who has seen it all, met very powerful people, how to get along with life and what's the next science, and what are the keys to a good relationship. >> i think that would be intimidating, he gets in the car and says, how is it going? you say, i had a really good pizza last night. what about you? well, i discovered a black hole at the center of the universe. >> it was humbling. >> you can hear more about the invention of the laser on our sunday morning program press here. it uses the lens of the marriage of dr. towns and his wife. they were married 74 years. it's this nice mix of love and science. you can watch it at sciencemarriage.com, and it will be on pbs later this month. >> i'll totally but that in my queue. it's proof that you should always be your best self, you should always be kind, a good
5:18 am
listener. you never know. >> the wisdom. >> coming your way. trending this morning, your lifelong dream to make it to the moon could be within your reach, maybe not like the doctor did. >> this is a robot called viper set to embark this year. the bot will travel into the dark areas of the moon to search for water, measure the concentration of ice. your name can go to the moon with the rover. you just go online and fill out your name, along with a four-digit pin on the nasa website. get it all filled out before it leaves in november. it's part of the nasa artemis moon mission plan. >> you'll be able to see what it's saying? >> no, you'll just have your name on the moon. >> when the aliens find it, kari hall, meteorologist, that rings a bell. >> i want to see what it's seeing in real time, that would be cool. >> maybe we can do that, too. doesn't the transmission take
5:19 am
forever to get back? >> the moon, i think it's a couple minutes at most. don't you have access to a million satellites already? >> one more thing, if it helps us out. we're taking a look at the water content of the earth this morning. we are going to see some more water coming in as we go into the weekend. for now, we're getting a chance to dry out. roads may still be a little wet because we had rain that moved through during the overnight. that has cleared out, the rest of the day is sunny. we can once again widen out the view and see what's happening out there with the clouds that are extending across the pacific. another atmospheric river targeting parts of the pacific northwest. and then we can see our hour-by-hour forecast, we're going to stop it right here at 1:00 on your saturday. we know you're making plans to get out and about this weekend and we are going to see some rain, first starting in the north bay, and spreading across much of the rest of the bay area going into the afternoon. here we are at 3:30, we're
5:20 am
seeing a lot of us get light rain, and it's going to continue with spotty activity into the evening. we're mostly looking at light amounts of rainfall. maybe a quarter inch of rain for less for most of us and it could be higher in some spots where we see rain lasting longer. sunday is dry and then we are going to see more rain in next week's forecast. very active storm pattern continues, and we're just going to see more waves of rain. it looks so soggy next week. but that's exactly what we need. hopefully a lot more sierra snow. if you're going there this weekend, a heads up that saturday is the worst day to travel, but the best day to ski. we're going to see amazing conditions up there, but it will be windy. heads up about that winter storm warning in effect. we could see anywhere from 10 to possibly 13 inches of snow. but look at next week's forecast. in total, we could see a couple feet of snow, so it's good to see we are going to see a lot more activity there.
5:21 am
once again, that last sierra snowpack measurement they were saying we were only at a quarter of our normal amount of snow. we're going to also catch up with more rain, with a few dry days in between, and our temperatures will be chilly, highs in the mid-50s. our morning temperatures down to the lower 30s. get ready for that. cinthia, you're tracking a crash in the east bay? >> we're going to stay at the dublin interchange going westbound on 580. we can see the sensors building up a little more traffic after we picked up on this accident, just about 10, 15 minutes ago. so be careful there as you're making your way westbound. even if you're coming down southbound 680 in dublin, you're going to be met with the scene. use some caution there. i did want to warn people about b.a.r.t., it will start next monday on the 15th. the biggest impacts will be to the daly city and berryessa line. if this is your main way of getting around the bay area, you do want to check on that and
5:22 am
make sure you get to your train on time. back to you. >> thank you so much. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> the holidays are over, but we're celebrating year-round in my department. we have a pair of consumer cases to cheer with more than $1,000

5:31 am
cinthia, you're tracking that crash in the east bay. >> it's near our camera, so we see a lot of headlights are heading toward where the crash has taken place. it's right at the dublin interchange, there were two cars that got into it. they're moving things over to the right-hand side. you could be watching and waiting for those crews to arrive on scene. i did want to come down into 84, the trouble continues there as they work to move traffic on one lane only. so if you're going in and out of 84, just be prepared to stop. that will take you about 20 minutes to get through the area. back to you. in just a few hours, the community of oakland will come together to remember slain police officer tuan le. >> officer le was killed in the line of duty just three days before the new year, as you might recall. and we have thom jensen, who is following what's happening in the case. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. yes, this is going to be an emotional vigil, no doubt.
5:32 am
it's set to get under way in oakland's chinatown at 10:00 a.m. this morning. officer le was born in vietnam in 1987. he is being remembered as an honored police officer, husband, son and friend, who has dedicated his life to making oakland safer. colleagues and families say he was always upbeat and brought laughter to everyone around him. hundreds of people from across the community are expected to remember his life and say good-bye at that ceremony. he was the 54th oakland police officer killed in the line of duty. the investigation into his murder is also leading to some new concerns about how the case will be prosecuted, after two of the suspects appeared in court this week. the alleged gunman, 27-year-old mark sanders, turned his back on the court as his lawyer asked to waive his arraignment. also in court was sebron
5:33 am
russell, who faces burglary charges related to officer le's work as an undercover operation. nbc bay area talked to a legal analyst about how the d.a. is handling these cases. >> this is a case that the community is tremendously outraged by, and it's important that as this case moves forward that the d.a. does communicate that things are being handled properly. >> reporter: but there are questions this morning about the district attorney's handling of a previous case against russell. pamela price's office dropped charges against russell in november that were filed by the previous d.a. in 2020, charges that included kidnapping to commit burglary or a sex crime, which included the use of a firearm, and counts of second-degree burglary and evading officers. the d.a.'s office cited insufficient evidence as the reason for dropping the charges against russell. regardless of those claims, the
5:34 am
interim police chief says that he is confident in the d.a.'s handling of these cases currently. we're live in the east bay, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, thom. 5:33 now. as the city continues to reel following the deadly shooting of officer le, there is a new effort to recall mayor sheng thao. a group of residents say they are ready to submit a notice of intention later today to begin recall efforts. organizers and volunteers were in the montclair neighborhood last night gathering signatures. they say they're fed up with crime in the city, the lack of a police chief and the city dropping the ball on that grant to combat retail theft that lost millions of dollars. we have reached out to the mayor's office. the mayor's office says they have no time to comment on this recall effort. also today, a man accused of murdering his own grandmother in the north bay is due back in court. 23-year-old luis aroyo-lopez is
5:35 am
being held without bail. police say in november he killed his 64-year-old grandmother at her home and then left with her head. police located her head on the banks of santa rosa creek near the downtown area. a few days later authorities arrested him in san francisco. investigators say the killing was targeted. the plea hearing starts at 8:30 this morning. tomorrow marks three years since the united states capitol and the capitol police defending it came under attack. the department of justice has charged more than 1,000 of those attackers, many are already in prison as we speak. former president donald trump has been accused of insurrection by the state of maine, found culpable of insurrection in a colorado courtroom, and charged with conspiracy by the state of georgia and the u.s. department of justice. >> reporter: just hours after the crowd attacked the u.s. capitol, top leaders in trump's
5:36 am
own party accused him of causing that attack. >> the mob was fed lies, they were provoked by the president and other powerful people. >> reporter: mcconnell from the senate, joined by fellow republican kevin mccarthy in the house, in condemning trump. >> the president bears responsibility for wednesday's attack on congress. >> reporter: trump left the presidency in washington, seemingly banished to his own mar-a-lago. you'll recall kevin mccarthy then returned to trump. well, they have imprisoned a number of attackers. this fellow who did something the confederate army never managed to do, carry a battle flag, was sentenced to three years in prison, charged with, among other things, threatening a police officer. we spoke with silicon valley
5:37 am
lofgren who sat on the committee investigating january 6th, who warned when trump talks about taking revenge, he's being serious. >> one thing i did learn in our investigation is to take seriously what trump says, because he means to do what he says. and he is currently saying that he will rescind part of the constitution, those words, his words on truth social, that he intends to be a dictator just for a day. what does that mean? that he intends to punish using the tools of the government people who he considers to be his enemies. really a complete upending of the constitutional order. i take that seriously, because i've learned that he doesn't say what he doesn't mean. he intends to do that. >> president biden will speak about the dangers to democracy
5:38 am
later today at valley forge. we expect it will be similar to this speech he gave in philadelphia more than a year ago, in which he warned extremists threaten the future of the republic. turning to a live look at heavenly ski resort, where today the main gondola will be closed for maintenance. this is because of a mechanical issue that was discovered yesterday morning having to do with one of the bearings. now, the resort says the gondola was never unsafe to operate, however they want to replace the bearings as soon as possible. we don't yet know when it's going to reopen, but hopefully in time for your next ski trip. for the time being, the only access to the mountain will happen on the california side. the best side, i would say. to a live look outside in san francisco, where this weekend a sweet treat awaits runners competing in the hot chocolate run. the race is presented by ventures endurance and it's happening this sunday at golden gate park. there's a 5k, a 10k, a 15k.

5:40 am
it's going to be bright and sunny, with a light wind. kickoff at 1:25 in the afternoon. if your weekend plans take you to santa cruz. probably today is the best day to go. it will be in the low 60s and also mostly sunny. but then tomorrow we'll see clouds, off and on rain and only 56 degrees. we keep those temperatures on sunday as we go back to sunshine. if your weekend plans take you to the sierra, here is a look at the forecast for palisades tahoe. we'll see rain coming in during the afternoon, switching over to snow. and the snow will continue into early tomorrow and then gradually taper off on sunday, as our temperatures reach for the low 40s. so i'll be tracking all of that and our changes ahead. cinthia has upcoming freeway closures to know about in the east bay. >> yeah, it's for next weekend. so our mlk weekend, next friday night until tuesday of that following week, it's going to be southbound 680 from the connecter to 84. so i have a couple of alternates for you.
5:41 am
we know how these closures have gone in the past. you can take 580 in either direction and come down 84, or come down 238 in hayward/union city, or make your way all the way to 880 and then eventually come into fremont and san jose. again, this is for next weekend. you have been warned. i want to talk about what's going on tonight. we have the chase center, warriors and pistons at 7:00. you could be seeing delays around 280 and 101. or people coming in and out of the bay bridge, it is a friday night, after all, and we have the 49ers game on sunday, as kari was mentioning. some delays around santa clara. back to you. >> thank you. this morning we're getting a look at new images of the snowpack in the sierra. still ahead, a side-by-side comparison, more and more snowfall, though, expected. and i'm bob redell. we're not talking snow here at oracle park. we're talking dirt. 15 million pounds of it, and some very, very large trucks.
