are people back, are they not back? we don't know. we're going to make plans for the weekend. and, kari, you say we're going to have a mixed bag. >> is it going to be sunny, raining, we're going to see a little bit of everything. we're starting out with temperatures this morning in the upper 40s and low 50s. a light wind. we had rain earlier this morning in parts of the east bay. that has since cleared out. concord, we start out at 9:00 this morning with temperatures in the upper 40s. as we go throughout the day, sunshine, it's going to be a nice afternoon. we'll just have to keep the jacket on as we only make it into the low 60s. we'll see low 60s for parts of the east bay, as well as the south bay, up to 62 in napa today and 60 in san francisco. we'll talk about that weekend rain coming up. cinthia, you have a crash near mountain view? >> yeah, this is northbound 101 at the connecter with 237. this was something involving a driver that went the wrong way and ended up into the bushes. we hope they're okay. we're going to continue to

follow this one and see what the chp puts out with the details on that. otherwise, let's check in on the east bay because things are coming and going, traffic is still flowing smoothly. it's friday light, just about 15 minutes to make it from highway 4 over to the bay bridge. back to you. this morning, a group pushing to recall oakland mayor sheng thao, they say they've had enough trouble in the city to call for a change, and they say they have the support to get that rolling. >> "today in the bay"'s thom jensen joins us live from the east bay with more on where that recall effort stands now. >> reporter: good morning, scott and kris. the first part of this long process is filing what's called a notice of intention. organizers say that they need 250 signatures before they can file that. they say they now have those 250 signatures, and they're ready to file that notice of intention later on today. those organizers were out in the montclair neighborhood last night gathering signatures. they say they're not only fed up

with the crime in oakland, which has increased, but the recent shooting especially of oakland police officer tuan le, and the city dropping the ball on grant money to fight retail theft. one supporter points to what she describes as a lack of response from the mayor's office when concerns are brought up, and the fact the city has remained without a permanent police chief since leronne armstrong was fired last year. >> i think people have just about had it. they can't tolerate this anymore. we've got small businesses that are suffering, they keep getting attacked over and over again. different communities are getting attacked. >> reporter: we looked at some of the stats in oakland, and robberies have increased by 38% from 2022 to 2023, burglaries were up by 23% over that same time period, and motor vehicle thefts increased by 45%. we reached out to the mayor's

office about all of this, and they responded no comment when it comes to the recall effort. we're live in the east bay, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> thom, thank you. and an emotional event in oakland to honor and celebrate the life of officer tuan le. there will be a vigil at 10:00 this morning at the pacific renaissance plaza in chinatown. that is organized by the oakland chinatown chamber foundation, along with several other groups from the neighborhood. a follow-up to breaking news we brought you thursday morning, protests continued late into the night near people's park in berkeley, after the university of california and dozens of police officers cleared it for housing construction. nearly 50 or so protesters gathered at the intersection of telegraph and dwight, facing off with officers in riot gear. the park has long been a place executived to free speech and civil rights issues and has acted as a de facto public park. but the university owns that land. double-stacked shipping

containers surround the park to keep people out. it's an active construction zone. the university plans to build housing for 1,100 students and even some of the unhoused who call the 2.8 acre site home. >> they can build apartments a lot of other places, but they're doing it there. it's a statement that we don't care, we don't care about housing people, we don't care that this is a symbolic park. >> the past should be remembered but we shouldn't be trapped by it. this site is going to encompass so many elements of what is needed in berkeley at the moment. >> the university says it's within its legal right to start the construction. this comes as it waits a state supreme court decision on that very same question. the university's plan for the park is to preserve more than 60% of the site and revitalize the open park space, which will, they say, reinforce the park's history. new overnight, disgraced paralympian champion oscar pistorius is out on parole in

south africa after nearly 11 years in prison. you might remember one year after competing in the 2012 games t runner was convicted of shooting and killing his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, on valentine's day. the story is that he hot his girlfriend by mistake thinking she was an intruder. steenkamp's mother says a condition of his release is that he attend anger management courses. the countdown to the iowa caucuses is on. we are ten days away, front-runners making a last-minute push to win over voters. the former president, donald trump, far ahead in the polls and predicting he's going to win the state. nikki haley, ron desantis battling for second place. president biden is headed to pennsylvania to deliver a speech at valley forge where he will call for a renewed fight for democracy. his campaign releasing its first re-election campaign ad today,

and of course this comes just one day before the anniversary of the january 6th attack on the united states capitol. just days after lieutenant governor of california pushed to remove trump from the california ballot, she's become a target for swatting. this happened last weekend. the san francisco chronicle reports somebody called 911 on the lieutenant governor's home to report a shooting. she was not home at the time, but her two older sons were. a spokesperson told the "chronicle" they believe this was in retaliation for her working to bar trump from the california primary. the secretary of state for maine was also swatted after taking trump off the state's primary ballot. happening now, a beach hazard warning is in effect up and down the coast, and it will last until saturday. there will be large breaking waves, so beachgoers should be very careful, especially if you have pets and small kids.

the pier in pacifica will be closed for the next three weeks. the city says it is now unsafe because of damage from the high tides and those large waves. city leaders will re-evaluate the damage and see if it can be reopened, but not until january 25th. kari hall joins us. i hate to be a bummer, but just don't be a beachgoer. >> yeah, not this time of year. >> even olympic coach and champion can drown, anybody can drown. >> i know the surfers love to see these big waves, but it's been a little too dangerous out there. we've seen the big waves coming up that are sneaker waves, they come up a lot higher on the coastline. they've been eroding the beach and damaging pierce. as of this morning, we're starting out with waves at about 8 to 11 feet. it's been changing. we've seen them up to about 14 feet this morning. and we could continue to see those big breakers today. once again, we're just advising people to not even go and stay well away from the water. we have more storms out there

the biggest impact will be to the daly city and berryessa lines. they say all updates have been posted on bart.gov so head over to check the schedule. we've said the economy is running much stronger than people give us credit for. the latest evidence, the december jobs report coming in much hotter than expected. in normal times we like big numbers, but lots of people getting hired is inflationary. bond yields are up on the news this morning. that will likely drive mortgage rates higher. unemployment rate stands pat. openai, the maker of chatgpt, is reportedly in talks with dozens of publishers to license their content. the company has already struck deals with axle springer and the associated press. last week the new york times, which had been in talks with openai, sued the company and microsoft for using the paper's articles without permission.

the laser, if you didn't know it, was created by a uc berkeley scientist who won a nobel peace prize. charles towns is the subject of a new documentary called "a marriage of a scientist" and the documentarian and former uc berkeley student put it together. i spoke to the filmmaker, who says he got to know dr. towns by giving him rides around the uc berkeley campus. >> i got to know him while i was a student at uc berkeley, and he was a professor there and i found out one of the professors on campus invented the laser. so i asked him for office hours and asked him a lot of questions, and we got to know each other. and then one day i saw him outside of a physics lecture and he asked me for car rides. >> what did you talk about in your car rides? just like cal sports and the weather? >> sports probably wasn't his big interest, but i asked all sorts of questions on his discoveries from the laser through his astronomy

discoveries, like landing a man on the moon and the discovery of the black hole at the center of our galaxy. i would ask him just a lot of -- like you would ask a father for advice, someone who has seen it all, met very powerful people, how to get along with life and what's the next science, and what are the keys to a good relationship. >> i think that would be a bit intimidating, he gets in the car and says, how is it going? you say, i had a really good pizza last night. what about you? well, i discovered a black hole at the center of the universe. >> exactly, it was a humbling experience. >> you can hear more about the invention of the laser and the scientist behind it on our sunday morning program "press here" right after "meet the press" at 9:00. the documentary uses the marriage of dr. towns to his wife frances as part of the focus. they were married 74 years, so it's as much about love as it is science, but you can find it at marriagescience.com. it will also be on pbs.

>> as least he could understand what he's talking about. some of us would give a person like that a ride and he talks about black holes and you would be, like, so about that pizza? >> pepperoni. trending this morning, the story is much more than the dog ate my homework. i mean, look at that face. so a couple in pennsylvania says their dog ate $4,000. they say they withdrew the cash to pay for a home improvement project, put it on top of the counter. they say their 7-year-old doodle doesn't ever really grab stuff off the counter. but this time he thought it was a snack. they went to work sifting through his waste, and trying to salvage as much as they could to return it for new bills. eventually the bank was able to return $3,550, so a $450 loss. an expensive puzzle, indeed.

>> you're not only mad they ate the money, but you're mad you have to dig through you know what. oh, no. >> i bet they did take him to the vet. so on top of the $450 loss, they had a vet bill. but his face, he's like, sorry, my bad. i wonder what it is about the money that smelled good. >> it was off the counter. maybe that's where the steak is. >> well, we all like money. maybe not that much, though. let's get a check of your weather. >> we're starting out this morning with chilly temperatures, clouds, and we're going to have a nice day. one that you'll want to take advantage of cleaning up and running errands, getting outside, and also taking in the sunshine later today. we're going to see our temperatures going from upper 40s to low 50s, to seeing those highs in the low 60s for today, which is about normal for this time of year. we're going to see a high of 62 in san mateo and oakland, as well as napa and novato, san

francisco headed up for 60 degrees. it will be cooler tomorrow and this is as the clouds come in, rain during the afternoon, and our highs in the mid to upper 50s. even cooler on sunday, behind a cold front that's really going to drop our overnight temperatures. so timing out the rain for you, once again, sunny today, and then we are at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon, rain for the most part already passing through the north bay, moving into san francisco, as well as the east bay. and this, at times, looks like a steady rain, but it may get quite heavy for just a few minutes here and there, and then tapering off by sunday morning. most of us getting about a tenth to a quarter inch of rain, but it may be a little higher in some spots like concord and dublin. just watching out for where that rain tends to fall the heaviest. and then looking ahead, sunday is dry, monday also looking good. by tuesday morning, there's another quick round of rain and we stay in an active pattern through much of next week, possibly into next weekend. that's going to be really good

for the sierra snowpack. on saturday we're going to see snow coming down. there is a winter storm warning in effect. we may have some high wind gusts. the models are showing that we could see about a foot of snow, maybe even just a tad bit higher for upper elevations. that's going to be good, once again, for skiers. going into next week, possibly in total over 2 feet of snow, and we do see a lot more in the forecast, even beyond next thursday. looking at what to expect for us in the bay area, it is going to be chilly and the cold weather, once it gets here, will just settle in for several days, with our overnight temperatures in the 30s and our highs in the mid-50s. we'll see that rain coming in tomorrow. we're dry for the start of next week, and then more storm systems coming in next tuesday and wednesday. cinthia, you're hearing about a scary crash on highway 17. >> yeah, this is coming up highway 17 right before you get to the lexington reservoir. the first couple of details is

the covid surge is happening as we are learning more about the effectiveness of the main covid treatment paxlovid. a new study by researchers at ucsf shows that the antiviral pill does not reduce the risk of long covid. researchers found just as many people who took paxlovid suffered from long lingering symptoms as people who did not take the antiviral. however, ucsf infectious disease specialist dr. peter chin-hong says the drug is still effective at preventing severe disease in vulnerable people. >> so in those senses, i wish that they would show more of a benefit for chronic symptoms, but for those who are older and immune compromised, particularly those who are not vaccinated, paxlovid can really mean the difference between life and death. >> dr. peter chin-hong and the other respiratory and infectious disease experts say if you have symptoms, mask up. if you're sick, stay home and test so you know which treatment is the best for you. you can also get free testing

colder in the forecast. we're going to clear out for today. it's going to be a nice afternoon. but you can see the next storm that is stretching across the pacific and heading over toward the seattle area and eventually that will be working its way down the coast and into the bay area for tomorrow. looking at a cloudy start this morning, after some early morning light rain moved through parts of the bay area, and we'll be clearing out, with temperatures in san jose going from 50 degrees to upper 50s and low 60s for later today. and we're going to see those 60s around many of our microclimates, with martinez hitting a high of 60 degrees today, 60 in los gatos and in san francisco, and 64 today in santa rosa. i'll have the timeline of the rain as you make weekend plans coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. in just a few hours, neighbors in oakland will come together to remember slain police officer tuan le. >> officer le was killed in the line of duty just three days before the new year, while

working undercover. "today in the bay"'s thom jensen is live in the east bay. thom, lots of people in the community are expected to turn out for what's expected to be, understandably, an emotional vigil. >> reporter: should be very emotional. good morning to both of you. yes, in oakland's chinatown at 10:00 a.m. today, hundreds of people are expected for this vigil during the daylight hours in oakland in chinatown, in an area where he spent a lot of time not only on duty, but off duty as well. officer tuan le was born in vietnam in 1987 and he was being remembered and honored as an honored police officer, husband, son and friend, who dedicated his life trying to make oakland safer. colleagues and family say he was always upbeat and brought laughter to everyone around him. hundreds of people from across the country are expected to remember his life and say good-bye at the ceremony this morning. he was the 54th oakland police

officer killed in the line of duty. the investigation into his murder is leading to new concerns about how the case will be prosecuted, after two of the suspects appeared in court this week. the alleged gunman, 27-year-old mark sanders, turned his back on the court as his lawyer asked to waive his arraignment. the 30-year-old, sebron russell was also in court and he faces burglary charges related to officer le's work in a burglary operation. nbc bay area talked to a legal analyst about how the d.a. is handling these cases. >> this is a case that the community is tremendously outraged by, and it's important that as this case moves forward that the d.a. does communicate that things are being handled properly. >> reporter: but there are questions this morning about the district attorney's handling of a previous case against russell.

pamela price's office dropped charges against russell in november that were filed by the previous d.a. in 2020. the charges included kidnapping to commit burglary or a sex crime and also included the use of a firearm and counts of second-degree burglary and evading officers. the d.a.'s office cited insufficient evidence as the reason for dropping the charges against russell. regardless of the claims, the acting police chief, darren allison, says he's confident in the d.a.'s office handling of that case and also the current cases against the suspects in officer le's murder. we're live in the east bay, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> we know a lot of people will be showing up for that memorial. thank you very much. as the city continue to say reel from that deadly shooting of officer le, there's a new effort to recall mayor sheng thao. a group of residents say they are ready to submit a notice of intention later today to begin the recall efforts.

organizers and volunteers were in the montclair neighborhood just last night gathering signatures. they say they are fed up with crime in the city of oakland, the lack of a police chief, and the city dropping the ball on a major grant to combat retail left. we have reached out to the mayor's office, the mayor's people say they have no time to comment on the recall effort. it's 6:35. tomorrow marks three years since the united states capitol and capitol police defending it came under attack. the department of justice has charged more than 1,000 of those attackers. many are already in prison as we speak. former president donald trump has been accused of insurrection by the state of maine, found culpable of insurrection by a colorado courtroom, and charged with conspiracy by the state of georgia and the u.s. department of justice. >> reporter: just hours after

the crowd attacked the u.s. capitol, top leaders in trump's own party accused him of causing that attack. >> the mob was fed lies, they were provoked by the president and other powerful people. >> reporter: mcconnell from the senate, joined by fellow republican kevin mccarthy in the house in condemning trump. >> the president bears responsibility for wednesday's attack on congress by mob rioters. he should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. >> reporter: trump left the presidency and washington seemingly banished by his own party to mar-a-lago. but mccarthy's resolve would last just days. he was one of the first to visit trump, one of the first to praise him. meantime, the fbi and doj have been relentless in finding each and every attacker, poring over videos that day to identify suspects. the latest accused from massachusetts in court this

week, three years after the attack, with hundreds of arrests to go. >> in fact, this fellow who did something the confederate army never managed to do, to carry a battle flag into the u.s. capitol, was sentenced early last year to three years in prison, charged with, among other things, threatening a police officer. we spoke with silicon valley congresswoman zoe lofgren, who sat on the select committee investigating january 6th, who warned when donald trump talks about revenge, she says he's being serious. >> one thing i did learn in our investigation is to take seriously what trump says, because he means to do what he says, and he is currently saying that he will rescind part of the constitution, those words, his words on truth social that he intends to be a dictator, just for a day. what does that mean?

good friday morning. the time is 6:45. we're taking a look at our day planner for mountain view. we're starting out with a few clouds, but it will quickly go to sunshine today. it will be really nice as the highs head for the low 60s and a light wind. we are going to be watching rain in our saturday forecast. i'll have more in a few minutes. we'll go to the san mateo bridge. there are a few cars going in both of those directions, but no issues to report along the peninsula so far this morning. it's just under a 10 and 15 commute through the richmond bridge, bay bridge and san mateo bridge. i'll tell you what i'm watching on the chp log coming up. the idea for a cannabis cafe

making a comeback. san francisco assembly member matt haney says he's rebooting his attempt to bring amsterdam-style cannabis cafes to the city and state, as governor gavin newsom vetoed a bill last year. the new bill is expected to last years, it would allow dispensaries to convert their businesses into cafes where customers could buy cannabis products as well as food and drinks. haney says the cafes could be a billion dollar tourist industry. 6:46 now. you won't be seeing 49ers star quarterback brock purdy in this sunday's game against the rams. you will see backup sam darnold leading the team instead. no need to worry, there's nothing to lose or gain in this game, so the team is trying to keep purdy healthy. he has already clinched the number one seed last week -- i should say the niners have. as for the other starters, coach

ranger. it's going to be raining people, so i think that's going to make it very sloppy out there. but maybe just adding to the show. we are waking up and heading out to sunshine for much of the bay area this morning, starting to clear out after some early-morning clouds, and a little bit of rain. take a look at our temperatures right now, in the upper 40s. it is a cool start, but it will be a nice day with our high temperature in the low 60s for much of the south bay, san jose headed for 62 degrees. we'll see a high of 61 in danville today and 62 in oakland, and some upper 50s and low 60s for much of the peninsula. san mateo reaching 62 and 60 in the mission district, and 64 today in santa rosa. we're enjoying the sunshine and nice weather for today, but tomorrow the rain will be back, quickly racing through the north bay and then san francisco by the early afternoon. maybe heavy, at least initially, for parts of the east bay. but then winding down late tomorrow night. we are going to see it drying out on sunday. most of us will see about a

tenth to a quarter inch of rain, but maybe just a touch bit higher for some of those areas that do get in on the heavier downpours, maybe concord picking up on 0.3 of an inch of rainfall, and we will see more ahead going into next week. especially by the middle of the week, we're looking at more rounds of rain coming in, along with chilly temperatures. so that's going to create a high amount of sierra snow, while we get some off and on rain in our forecast. look at those numbers there. we're only going to see highs in the mid-50s. our morning temperatures will start out near freezing each day. it is going to be chilly in san francisco as well, with the off and on wet weather throughout the afternoon on saturday. cinthia, what's going on with that crash on highway 17? >> the ambulance has arrived to the scene, so that's the good part. this is on northbound 17, right around the lexington hills and the lexington reservoir near idlewild. the car went on its roof and two other cars were involved. we're watching the sensors build

this morning at pacific renaissance plaza in chinatown, organized by the oakland chinatown chamber foundation, along with other groups from the neighborhood. as the city reels from that deadly shooting of officer le, there is a new effort to recall oakland mayor sheng thao. a group of residents say they are ready to submit a notice of intention later today to begin the recall effort. they say they are fed up with crime in the city, fed up with the lack of a police chief and with the city dropping the ball on a million dollar grant to combat retail left. we have reached out to the mayor's office. it says it has no comment on the recall effort. protests still under way near people's park in berkeley, this after the university of california and dozens of police officers cleared it for housing construction. nearly 50 or so protesters guard at the intersection of telegraph and dwight, facing off with officers in riot gear. the university plans to build housing for 1,100 students.

the university says it's well within its legal right to do that to people's park as it owns the property. this comes as it awaits a state supreme court decision on some legal challenges. a beach hazard warning is in effect up and down our coastline, and it will last until saturday. there will be some large breaking waves as we've seen over the last couple of weeks, and beachgoers should be careful or perhaps stay away altogether. in pacifica, the pier will be closed for the next three weeks because the city says the pier is now unsafe because of damage from high tides and large waves. city leaders will re-evaluate the damage andy if it can reopen, but not until january 25th. and be careful if you plan to go up to tahoe. >> we are going to see snow coming down tomorrow. today is looking good. tomorrow we'll see rain and sierra snow and that may change some plans in the bay area. we'll be tracking it for you. the only major concern right now is over the santa cruz mountains, there was a car on its roof, a couple of issues
