americans under winter storm watches this morning. the system started along the pacific coast and is racing across the country. it is set to pummel the northeast. >> we're totally geared up. i know a lot of people haven't seen snow in a long time. >> reporter: while new york and philly could mostly see rain, new york's governor directing state agencies to prepare for an emergency response. meaning, up to 3,000 pieces of equipment could be utilized. >> right now we're expecting this to be a sizable statewide event. >> reporter: as crews across the region prepare for the onslaught of snow, hardware stores are seeing an uptick in business. >> this is the best thing i have ever seen in my life. >> i want to buy a sled. >> reporter: with anticipation mounting to see if a snowless streak finally ends. >> it hasn't snowed in a couple years, so we're definitely

storm watch, winter storm warning all the way down into the appalachians. here's the storm back through texas getting itself together, starting to push its way east with snow already in wichita. it will race into the gulf coast and intensify bringing heavy rain, strong storms from texas on into florida. now we move into tonight. the system pushing toward the mid-atlantic states. we're looking for sleet, freezing rain, virginia as well. snow back through indiana and ohio. now here is why we time it out. washington, d.c. tomorrow. 7:00 a.m. until noon. snow and sleet. rain noon to 8:00 p.m. is it enough to break the streak? not sure. philadelphia snow and sleet noon to 4:00. sunday morning, i should say at 1:00 a.m. new york snow and rain from noon to 7:00. and then heavy rain into sunday morning. but boston, here we go. light snow to start off tomorrow. but by sunday night, saturday night into sunday, heavy snow. let's time it out as far as the precipitation. down through the south, an inch

to a half an inch, but you get to the north. 6 to 8 inches of snow from portland to boston. but right along the coast, if you get an inch, maybe. but then it is washed out by rain. look to the west. all anywhere from 4 inches to up to a feet of snow. and also there is some ice accumulation in the appalachians as well. hazardous travel conditions and isolated power outages. we will continue to time this out and see what happens. we will update you at 8:00 when we get new information. >> al, thank you. also this morning, we are learning more about the deadly school shooting near iowa. a 17-year-old gunman opening fire, killing a 6th grade student and wounding four others and a school administrator. the fbi is there assisting with the investigation. overnight the small community came together for a vigil. adrian joins us with the very latest. adrian, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning to you, savannah. here in perry, there is still a tremendous amount of pain. thursday was supposed to be the first day back to school following the break. before the students could enter the classroom, they were met with terror. it is not how anyone expected to enter the classroom. this morning a community coming together after a dark day at an iowa high school. >> we've got an active shooter at perry high school. >> reporter: before class started thursday, police say a 17-year-old student started shooting. >> there is a bunch of kids that ran out. and they're like, yo, go back. go back to your car. there is a guy with a gun. >> reporter: the first 911 call

came around 7:37 in the morning. first responders arriving about 7 minutes later, discovering multiple gunshot victims. >> officers immediately attempted to locate the source of the threat and quickly found what appeared to be the shooter with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: officers found some shootings sheltering in place while others ran for their lives. a 6th grader killed. >> he was a neighborhood kid that would come and play with us. he was the sweetest little kid ever. >> reporter: police say four other students and a school administrator for injured. this morning a post from the daughter of the principal saying her dad was in surgery all day and is stable, calling him, quote, a gentle giant and amazing person. police identifying the shooter as dylan butler. they say he was armed with a handgun and shotgun and posted on social media around the time of the shooting, including one post saying, quote, now we wait. other students have said butler was bullied and struggled at

the first day we saw maybe 20 documents. last night we saw another 20. this is -- this is really a small pool. >> hundreds of pages. >> exactly. one page could have a 100-page deposition transcript. all of the men involved in here that we talked about, they're not accused of wrongdoing. the people that have been accused of wrongdoing we know. epstein, prince andrew. he did settle. so we have to wait and see what else there is. but this iill contin but this is a small, small drop if the bucket. >> laura jarett, thank you very much we will continue to watch. we have an update on that las vegas judge who was hurt when she was violently attacked in her own courtroom earlier this week. attacked by a man she was sentenced. liz kreutz has been following this story for us. >> yeah. las vegas chief judge jerry weiss says the judge was back at work yesterday she was said to be shaken up with bruises but doing okay. the attacker now faces a new slew of charges.

after that brutal attack in a las vegas courtroom, officials providing a highly anticipated update on the judge. >> she was injured and received medical attention. she remains sore and stiff but thankfully it was not more severe. >> reporter: releasing a statement thanking well wishers, writing i am extremely grateful for those that took brave action during the attack. captured on courtroom cameras playing out as the seasoned judge was sentencing a man to prison for attempted battery the defendant who has a history of violent assault jumping over the bench, tackling her to the ground and sending a court marshall to the hospital calling into question security procedures in our nation's courts how common is it to have attacks or threats like this in a courtroom. >> attacks like this, these

emotional impromptu acts of violence occur probably daily in courtrooms across the country. >> reporter: like this incident in mississippi a suspect caught on video throwing things at the judge but las vegas officials say they have never seen anything like this >> there is plenty of the instances where somebody is -- you know, becomes rowdy in the courtroom. this is the first one i have seen where somebody supermanned over the judicial bench. >> reporter: he faces battery against a protected person, meaning the judge and her court staff. according to court records, he refused to appear in court to face new charges clark county's district attorney says the court is reviewing its security protocols >> reporter: his reaction happened so quickly, i don't know if anything could have been done to prevent him from what he did. now according to those records, he is set to return to court on from what he did. >> reporter: now tuesday. the judge will sentence him for his initial crime. the court does plan to add another court marshall for extra safetyitial crime, and the court

investigation into his death. hundreds of people from across the community are expected at this morning's vigil. he was the 54th oakland police officer killed in the line of duty. the vigil is happening at 10:00 this morning at the pacific renaissance plaza in chinatown, and it is being organized by oakland chinatown chamber foundation, along with several other neighborhood groups. protests are still under way near people's park in berkeley, this after the university of california and dozens of police officers cleared it for housing construction. nearly 50 protesters gathered at the intersection of telegraph and dwight, facing off with officers in riot gear. the university plans to build housing for 1,100 students. the university says it's within its legal right to do the construction at people's park because it owns the land. this comes as it awaits a state supreme court decision on legal challenges. let's take a look at our

good morning. it is 8:56. i'm kris sanchez. this morning the community of oakland continues to mourn and will gather for a vigil for the oakland police officer shot and killed in the line of duty last week. several men face charges in connection with the investigation into his death. the vigil is happening in about an hour at the pacific renaissance plaza in chinatown organized by the oakland chinatown chamber foundation and several other neighborhood groups. happening now, the city is reeling following that deadly shooting, and now there is a new recall effort to oust the mayor. a group of residents say they are ready to submit a notice of intention later today to begin the recall effort. at 11:00, we are following the latest developments from the vigil.
