thank you so much for starting your first weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. clear, cold, but you say rain is on the way? >> yeah. just areas of patchy fog used to in the north bay, but if you think it's cold today it's going to get colder tomorrow. under a frost advisory for parts of the north bay and east bay hills and down through the south bay until tomorrow around 10:00 a.m. once we start to clear things out. waking up to just above freezing in scotts valley. 34. 37 in livermore and 30s continue. 36 in napa this morning. already picking up on cloud cover moving in from the north. right now on satellite and radar, those showers and the snow already around the california/oregon border moving into the bay area today. this weekend not a complete washout. we are only looking at rain today. talk about what's going on in the sierra with that winter storm warning and just have more rounds of rain coming. that's coming up in about ten minutes. kira? >> cinthia, thanks so much.

as you just mentioned, that storm will be bringing some much-needed snow in the sierra. the year's first sierra snow pack report tuesday was less than stellar. but as the snow is welcome it will create dangerous driving, windy, whiteout conditions. so the chp says don't drive there but if you must be prepared achanes. kevin cooper shares video over the past couple days. he highlights the vast difference in this year's first snow pack versus last january's. >> snow pack last year talking 24 feet of snow up at the upper crest depending where were you in and around the basin. this year, we've seen inches. just about 24 inches of snow. season-to-date. >> the winter weather advisory for the sierra continues into tomorrow morning.

whether it's snow, rain or chilly temperatures, or all of the above, stay on top of it all with our nbc bay area app. it will let you track how cold in your neighborhood this weekend. new this morning -- alaska airlines is grounding all of its 737s after a terrifying midair emergency last night. take a look at that. a piece of the airplane detacheds, leaving a gaping hole in the cabin. it happened during a flight to southern california from oregon. passengers say they heard some sort of very loud noise about 20 minutes in to the flight, and fortunately the pilot made a safe emergency landing. this morning the alaska airlines ceo says that all 65 of its 737 aircraft will undergo full maintenance and safety inspections. that's expected to take a few days and will impact alaska's flight schedule. the ceo stresses that safety is alaska's main focus and the

airline is cooperating with the ntsb investigation. "today in the bay's" jocelyn moan shares what a passenger saw. >> reporter: a hole in an alaska airlines plane. passengers flying from portland, oregon to ontario, california, when about 20 minutes in they hear a loud noise. >> it goes, boom! i look up and the air masks are, like, out, popped down, and i look to my left, and there's just a huge, like, gaping hole on the left side, where the window is. >> reporter: elizabeth took this video during the flight. sitting about two aisles back to the right. she says she couldn't tell what part of the plane flew off, adding there were passengers on the aisle where that hole appears to be. >> when i looked up, shirt off, flew off, and skin very red. >> reporter: alaska airlines says the aircraft landed safely back at portland international

airport with 171 passengers and 6 crew members. mike mccarran is an aviation consultant telling us in this situation you want to keep people calm, which the crew seemed to do. there are big questions with this. >> really, big questions about the integrity of the door, the maintenance. assembly. i'm not sure where to begin, but definitely sometime some kind of mechanical failure. ntsb will go through all the maintenance and manufacturing records with boeing and this thing's going to become piece by piece put the puzzle back together. >> jocelyn moran reporting for us. locally back here arrested in the shooting death of a police officer now accused of trying to escape the state. mark sanders was arrested thursday. prosecutors say he fired the shot that killed officer le. and now police sources tell nbc news bay area they believe

sanders' mother tried to help him book a flight to leave california. yesterday, one day after sanders' arrest community members gathered together to remember the officer. the chinatown chamber of commerce held the memorial right there in the heart of chinatown and say that's right where officer le spent many hours both on and off duty. the late officer was remembered by friends and colleagues as a husband and son who loved oakland. >> officer le exemplified what it looks like to serve the community and despite, showing up for community and businesses, making sure that our community truly felt heard. >> we're going to miss him. we're going to think of him, but his legacy walks on with you and with us that are here. >> the official memorial service for officer le will be wednesday

at the church in castro valley. moving forward, happening today, oakland mayor sheng thao is facing a recall effort one week following the shooting death of officer le. yesterday a group of ohlund residents planned to gather signatures submitting a notice of retention to begin the recall effort against the mayor but tell nbc bay area they needed more time to review the paperwork. they now tell us they will mail the paperwork and notify mayor thao today. the effort needs 10% of signatures from oakland's registered voters to move forward. the mayor's office tells nbc bay area it has no comment on the recall effort. also, in oakland a group of demonstrators gathered yesterday at city hall calling on city leaders to take action to curb crime. they also expressed frustration the city has been without a police chief nearly one year. a council member agrees that fast-tracking hiring a new police chief would prioritize oakland's safety.

>> if any city in any state in any country, public safety is the number one priority. and in any city, the most, most important position is not the mayor. it's the police chief. he directses officers on street. >> also supporting district attorney pamela price. one typically quiet east bay neighborhood a car crashed right into this pleasant hills home causing a gas leak. it happened around 6:30 in the area of susan lane and doris drive right behind grocery outlet on contra costa boulevard. the people ins house were safely evac waited. no one hurt. pg&e crews worked overnight to cap that leak. also in the east bay, firefighters are looking into what caused a house fire in alameda county. this happened around 5:30 last night at a home in castro valley.

video shows dozens of firefighters cleaning up the home on garrison avenue. it's unclear whether anyone was inside the home when the fire broke out. we have reached out to the alameda county fire department and are waiting to hear back. former president donald trump in iowa. nine days before the iowa republican caucus. the gop front-runner held a rally at the university urging followers not to get complacent. the latest polling shows trump with a commanding lead over the republican field in the hawkeye state. meanwhile, the u.s. supreme court will soon decide if colorado can legally ban former president trump from appearing on their state election ballot. the supreme court announced it will hear an appeal by the former president on february 8th. trump is challenging a ruling that disqualified him from appearing on the republican primary ballot in colorado. that decision came from the colorado supreme court last month when justices ruled he

welcome back. gorgeous look at the glowing sunrise over the south bay. 101 in san jose. clear out there, which means no cloud cover to blanket us. it is very cold out there. cinthia pimentel is forecasting showers later this afternoon. so maybe want to get out this morning and get your errands done. but not until we're off the air at 8:00! the pier in pacifica closed the next three years, it's unsafer because of damage from high tides and large waves this past week. city leaders re-evaluaing damage to see if it can reopen by january 5th.

happening today a community cleanup in san francisco. people invited to clean up the tenderloin. pictures from a previous cleanup event hosted by the civic joy fund. also the tenderloin business coalition and others. expecting more than 300 volunteers. all welcome. this starts at 10:00 a.m. at al fred e. bonico park. do not feed the bears in tahoe. mysterious flyers found posted along the highway urging people to allow bears to eat out of their trash cans to help them survive. wildlife officials posted on social media bears can indeed survive on their own and feeding bears changes their natural behaior and increases a risk of run-ins with humans. more evidence showing that covid is surging again across the bay area, and experts are finding the evidence in our

wastewater. especially in the south bay. holiday gatherings are partially to blame. santa clara county public health leaders are concerned either people aren't taking resurgence of covid seriously or just have covid fatigue. we found people saying it's not top of mind. >> medicine now for covid i think and also vaccines. as long as we are keeping up to our vaccinations, and we know that the hospitals are not getting overloaded. i think it's fine. personal preference. >> over 90% of the population received at least one dose of the covid vaccine. however, only 20% of our population has received this most recent vaccine. >> even though the federal government is not paying as much for vaccines, most bay area counties are offering ways to get one for free. you can find those resources on our website.

this rosco de reyes. baking 4,000. we have three locations, and every single bakery we have two open baking nonstop for the next three days. >> it's becoming more popular. people from all over the bay area come here looking for rosca de reyes. it's a huge seller for us. mixed with bread, we use orange and we use dried fruit on top of it to represent the use of the -- defines the baby jesus it is pledged in return it will provide gifts to the people at the event or the celebration.

and showers and snow showers up to the north. timeline for first weekend of the year plans. 9:00, 10:00, starts to show up in the north bay. sweeping on through parts of san francisco, peninsula, east bay by 1:00 and 2:00 this afternoon. south bay lingering until 3:00 to the 5:00 hour. sunset and later for our saturday-night plans things clear out of here and also clearing for our sunday plans. however, there is also aside from cool temperatures and rain, high surf advisory until 7:00 tonight. already seeing wave heights 13 to 17 feet out there right now. just avoiding coastline. bundling up at home is not a bad way to spend our saturday, too. speaking of saturday plans. looking up towards the sierra. a winter storm warning. if you haven't left yet do not go at all. conditions near whiteout. i want you to be safe. if you dare to go, pack the tools and all of the snacks and things you need in case of emergency and closed roadways.

here on this corner. >> reporter: first thing we need to tell you about what michelle sawyer did one week before christmas, believe it or not, what she was wearing. michelle had just visited the elementary school where her son-in-law teaches dressed as a snowman and driving home still in costume when she witnessed a man collapsing on the sidewalk. >> ran out of my car, right about here. >> reporter: michelle knew just what to do. >> ripped open my narcan. >> reporter: right there corner of 7th and wilson michelle and another good samaritan add ministered dose after dose of narcan. the drug that can reverse an opioid overdose. all the while -- michelle still in her costume. >> after eight doses the gentleman finally woke up. looked right at me and started smiling. that's when somebody walked by and said, he must think he's seen an angel because i was all dressed in white. >> reporter: at this point you're probably wondering why michelle was traveling with a

>> the official memorial service for the officer will be wednesday at three crosses church in castro valley. and moving you forward, happening today oakland mayor sheng thao is facing removing one week after the officer was on duty. a group of residents plan to gather signatures submitting a notice of intention to begin the recall effort against the mayor and tell nbc bay area they needed more time to review their paperwork. they plan to mail the paperwork and notify the mayor today. the effort needs signatures from at least 10% of oakland the registered voters in order to move forward. the mayor's office tells nbc bay area it has no comment on the recall effort. and in berkeley, protests continued for another day at people's park. last night more than 100 demonstrators showed up in

solidarity to show dissatisfaction with how the city treated people in the park. this happened at the corner of dwight and telegraph in berkeley. you see on one side full of demonstrators. the other side, police in tactical gear. this stems from thursday morning when the university sent dozens of officers into the space to clear it out, and then quickly began arrestingarresting -- ere wall of shipping containers. even though there are still legal issues, the state supreme court needs to weigh in on this. the university says all shipping containers in place and expects the roads around the park to reopen today or tomorrow. the u.s. supreme court will soon decide if colorado can legally ban former president trump from appearing on the state election ballot. the supreme court announced it will hear an appeal by trump on

february 8th. the former president is challenging a ruling that disqualified him from appearing on the republican primary ballot in colorado. that decision came from the colorado supreme court last month when justices ruled that the president incited the january 6th riot and that would bar him from holding further federal office. well, the country does mark a somber anniversary today speaking of the three years since a mob overran the u.s. capitol, vandalizing the building, and sending lawmakers into hiding. president biden marked the anniversary in a speech yesterday in pennsylvania. >> this is not rhetorical, academic or hypothetical, but democracy is still america's sacred cause is the most urgent question of our time. >> trump and maga supportering embrace physical violence, they

laugh about it. >> the insurrection backs his claim the 2020 election was rigged, says former president trump. even know there is no evidence of that. we have a look at the incident and the continuing fallout. >> reporter: the department of justice has charged more than 1,000 of those attackers. many are already in prison as we speak. former president donald trump has been accused of insurrection by the state of maine. found culpable of insurrection in a colorado courtroom, and charged with conspiracy by the state of georgia and the u.s. department of justice. just hours after the crowd attacked the u.s. capitol top leaders in trump's own party accused him of causing that attack. >> the mob was fed lies, they were provoked by the president and other powerful people. >> reporter: mcconnell from the senate joined by fellow

republican kevin mccarthy in the house in condemning trump. >> the president bears responsibility from wednesday's attack on congress by mob riot ers. >> he should have immediately denounced the mob. >> reporter: and seemingly banished by his own party, to mar-a-lago. mccarthy lasted justies, one of the first to visit trump and praise him. >> reporter: meantime, relentless finding each and every attacker poring over videos to dent tie suspects. the late effort accused chris kennelly of massachusetts in court this week. three years after the attack. with hundreds of arrests to go. in fact, this fellow, who did something that the confederate army never managed to do, carry the confederate battle flag into the u.s. capitol was sentenced

early last year to three years in prison. charged with, among other things, threatening a police officer. we spoke with silicon valley congresswoman zoe lofgren who said on the committee investigating january 6th and warned when donald trump talks about revenge, she says he's being serious. >> i learned in our investigation is to take seriously what trump says, because he means to do what he says. and he is currently saying that he will rescind part of the constitution. those words. his words on truth social, that he intends to be a dictator just for a day, what does that mean? that he intends to punish using the tools of the government, people who are, he considers to be his enemies. really, a complete upending of the constitutional order.

20%. rsv or respiratory virus starting to stabilize across the country. that only matters if you don't have it. right? the covid surge happening as we're learning more about the effectiveness of the main covid treatment paxlovid. a new study shows the anti-viral pill does not reduce the risk of long covid. researchers found just as many people who took paxlovid suffered from lingering symptoms as those who did not take the anti-viral. however, the infectious disease specialist says that the drug is effective preventing severe disease in vulnerable people. >> so in those senses, you know, i wish it did show more of a benefit for chronic symptoms, but for those who are older and immune compromised, specifically those who are not vaccinated, paxlovid to really mean the difference between life and death. >> reporter: the doctor also says if you have symptoms mask

but safety is the main focus and the airline is cooperating with the ntsb investigation. back here locally, a man arrested in killing of oakland police officer le accused of trying to leave the state with help of his mother. mark sanders is under arrest. prosecutors say he fired the shot that killed the officer. sources tell us his mother is now under arrest as well. police sources confirmed to nbc bay area she tried to help him book an airline ticket to leave california. meanwhile, yesterday the community gathered to remember the fallen officer. the chinatown chamber of commerce held the memorial in the heart of chinatown where they say the officer spent many hours on and off duty. while the family was not present, he was remembered by friends and colleagues as a husband and son who loved oakland. his official memorial service held wednesday morning at the

three crosses church in castro valley. today the country marks three years since the insurrection at the u.s. capitol and now the u.s. supreme court will decide whether colorado can legally ban former president donald trump from the appearing on the state election ballot, because of his part in the insurrection. the supreme court announced it will hear an appeal by former president trump on february 8t. he is challenging the ruling preventing him from appearing on the ballot in colorado. that decision came from the colorado supreme court last month. justices ruled he incited the january 6th riot barring him from holder further federal office. all right. before we go, cinthia has one last check of the forecast. >> rain and wind today. we have that winter storm warning in the sierra. also we have very chilly mornings ahead as we go even into the early parts of next week. better for tomorrow, but more rain chances and in that extended forecast there, take it
