chances in store for our workweek. and an update tonight on the mid-flight fiasco on board that alaska plane, what we just learned minutes ago from federal investigators. we investigate nearly a hundred taxpayer funded vehicles once meant to drive around some of our most vulnerable now sitting in these lots. for years. without moving. the actions the agency took after we started asking questions. thanks for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm gia vang. frosty conditions out there for the workweek. >> things are calm, with frost advisories going into effect in a little bit. we're tracking rain chances

ahead this week e. >> and chain controls have been dropped. and you can see plenty of snow, but traffic is moving. >> and take a look at this video taken by one of our photographers at kirkwood mountain resort. it's good morning. the resort says mother nature brought a little over a foot of snow. and we could get a dusting in the bay area. >> i think it's possible by wednesday, another colder storm for mt. hamilton or saint helena. we could see a chaens chance of a dusting of snowshowers. average low for this time, it's not typically this cold. santa rosa and concord below freezing. now check out these temperatures. even at 9:00 we're already in the 30s in danville, livermore

and another morning of low 30s. and a few areas at that could be dropping into the isolated, upper 20s in some of those wind-sheltered areas. now coming up we've got an active lineup of weather. rain returning tuesday and wednesday and for next week. and plus the return of the king tides. the astronomical high tides rolling in for thursday and friday. we'll have to watch for any coastal advisories. but over my shoulder you see the three storm systems aiming on the bay area this week. the biggest potential could be lining up for next weekend. we'll countdown the timing of how much rain and sierra snow in about ten minutes. >> and if you haven't already, make sure to download our free nbc bay area app, a great resource to have to keep an eye on the chilly temps and rain in your neighborhood. now to a nbc bay area

exclusive. you are looking at a fleet of cars purchased by the transportation authority. nothing seems to be awry, except that some of these cars haven't moved in four years. >> candace nguyen has been figuring out why. these vehicles were left to depreciate. >> reporter: not only have nearly a hundred of these cars and vans not been traded in or sold, thieves have targeted them, costing taxpayers even more. now these vehicles are the access transit service, it's to help drive around some of our most vulnerable. after we started asking questions, the agency took action. linda mccloud and jiajia taylor are two south bay women as tough as the challenges they're forced to face. >> as my vision got worse and worse i continued to push myself

to be as independent as possible. >> yeah, i can take care of myself for as long as i physically can. >> reporter: both have used santa clara valley transportation access parra transit service, which is for people with disabilities. both say it's a logistical nightmare. >> the logistics are nonexistent. they will literally pick me up have santa clara, take me all the way over to milpitas. take me to downtown san jose. and then back here to santa clara. so literally, i have several times stopped the vehicle, let me out. >> it was so unpredictable. you just didn't know for sure when or how you would get there. >> reporter: while mccloud and taylor are complaining about inefficiencies they see in parra transit routs.

the investigative unit uncovered where public money was wasting away in plain sight. we found this fleet of cars had been sitting on the lot in san jose for years, just depreciating. satellite imaging confirms dozens of these 2012 priuses purchased for more than 26 grand each haven't moved in more than one, two, three, four years. >> that seems like a waste. they really should be selling these back. >> reporter: vta told us 95 vehicles were decommissioned because they were past their useful life. they were used. most have more than 100,000 miles on them. so why didn't vta sell or trade them in to recoup some of that public money? they say there was a delay in the vehicle retiring process because of the covid pandemic, a delay with the service that vta

uses for auction and multiple staffing changes. after the investigative unit started asking questions, vta said the vehicles are now currently in the process of being scheduled for auction. >> something went wrong with the process of returning them from active duty and doing something with them. >> reporter: giovani is a program director at uc davis and transportation expert. he says since the pandemic transit systems have struggled. >> we know that all transit agencies are extremely overwhelmed with a lot of priorities, from funding to staffing issues. this is probably a lesson learned for other agencies. >> reporter: vta spent north of $3 million on this fleet of 95 vehicles. it missed out on potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars by not auctioning them off years ago, and even more money was wasted, we found, when some of the vehicles' catalytic

converters were stolen in 2022. i'm here on this public trail that runs right alongside where these vehicles are parked. multiple sources tell me this is where thieves would cut and break through the fence to get onto the property and steal catalytic converters. the thefts are widespread problems, and they have since improved security and moved some of those cars. invoices show the agency spent more than 10 grand on fixing the fence around the yard to keep thieves out. one incident involved a suspect with a carjack in his hands firing gunshots near a vta employee. >> i love public transit and am such an advocate for it. i want so much for it to work. >> reporter: in the months we've been investigating, vta never agreed to an interview. it said its issue didn't impact

parra transit service. they said it is parra transit and not a public car service. >> it callous to say that kind of thing. >> i hope they never get to a point where they're in a wheelchair. >> and if you have a story for candace, call 888-996-tips or visit our website. all boeing 739 max jets remain grounded as the investigation into that emergency aboard an alaska airlines flight continues. they spent the first full day conducting interviews. and we got an update on that investigation. emma goss was monitoring that and joins us live. how has it impacted bay area travelers?

>> reporter: well, the ntsb shared a very important update in the last cummins. they have located the door plug that had come dislodged off of that alaska airlines flight. it was found by a schoolteacher in portland in his back yard. and the ntsb will be sharing more information tomorrow. they have conducted numerous interviews with people who were on board, describing what that chaotic scene was like. and the ntsb also verified that there was no structural damage from that door flying off. they say the investigation and inspections of the rest of the boeing fleet of 739 max planes are still ongoing. some who had their flights canceled were able it fly out of sfo today. but not everyone has been

fortunate flying into sfo. family members of one of our nbc bay area employees are stuck in atlanta tonight. their united flight back to the bay area was canceled today, and they may get to fly out late tuesday, which would cost the grandfather time missed at work and his grandson a day of school. >> so i've been trying to, you know, figure if i can reschedule, you know, maybe with another airline. and actually, i was just sort of going to get on the phone to call united airlines. >> reporter: the bottom line is that flights are still very much in flux for many travelers booked on united and alaska. and coming up at 11:00, i'll share more on the updates for the ntsb and what's next in the investigation now that the door plug has been retrieved. emma goss, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much. new tonight, a serious car crash near byron in

unincorporated contra costa county near walnut boulevard. the driver of a truck tried to pass another car in an area that has a double solid yellow line. the driver hit a white car. there were four children in the car. at least two adults in there as well. a woman and child were ejected from the car. several people rushed to the hospital. no word on how they're doing. last weekend a similar crash near byron involving four cars on holyrood near the byron airport. chp says a woman who was not properly wearing her seat belt die in that crash. it was caused by another vehicle crossing over the center line. flames broke through hurch at 2:30 in pittsburg. it started in the church's main sanctuary and spread into the

attic and roof. the pastor says the church has been at this location since 1970. he plans to hold services virtually until they can find another place to worship in person. no word on the cause of that fire. >> we never stop because something happens. we had a problem a few years ago. so i'm going to keep going. i'm not going to stop. >> no one was hurt in the fire and the cause is under investigation. and the search is on for a gunman who triggered a shelter in place order near the university village student housing. police got a call about a shooting and arriving officer found a wounded man outside a homeless shelter. they searched for the shooter but no luck. across the bay, san francisco police are searching for the gunman responsible for a deadly shooting near chase center around 10:00 last night. one person was the sho.

paramedics took them to hospital where they later died. they say a car might have been involved in that shooting. police are asking anyone with information to call them. an east bay bakery owner is feeling fed up after his business was hit by burglars this week. the owner shared the video with us and says someone broke in early friday morning. you can see right there, all that glass on the ground. smashed door and window. the burglars took off with a safe. two other nearby businesses were robbed as well. they're investigating a connection between the three burglaries. hundreds of people gathered as two movements converged, one calling for cease-fire in gaza, the other hoping to prevent people's park from being converted to student housing. alyssa goard was there for hours as protesters chanted, beat drums and made speeches near the now-barricaded park. >> reporter: we're at telegraph

in berkeley, and there are people demonstrating tonight. and on the other side of those people, down that street, there are some barricades set up and what appears to be a couple dozen berkeley police officers keeping watch. the people who are demonstrating are calling for a cease-fire in gaza and a free palestine, but they also say they're upset with what's going on at berkeley's people's park. and the development there. especially as the location where free speech movements have been fostered in the past. people are call for the park to be protected as well. alyssa goard, nbc bay area news. four to six weeks. that is how long chris paul is expected to be out after surgery on his hand. he fractured his left hand friday night when he went up for a rebound and collided with piston's guard jaden ivey. anthony flores will have more on paul's injury and the impact on the team coming up in sports.

we have a followup to a story we brought you last month about a food truck out of commission after being damaged. you might remember the owners of the kitchen turning for help. someone crashed right into their truck. the bill came to an entire month for the business. they had to cancel a number of

events. it teamed up with dre's lemonade with the goal of earning back some of the income. they were able to reopen thanks to the generosity of south bay supporters. >> we shocked by the support we got. a mini silver lining through unfortunate event. people were so generous, especially during times of holidays and tough times for everyone. we're definitely shocked for the support and very, very grateful. >> such gratitude. the business today exceeded their expectations. interest hope for 2024, they hope to open a brick and mortar restaurant. a section of 680 will be closed over the martin luther king jr. holiday. it's expected to reopen early in

the morning on tuesday january 16. and the weekend closure is part of a year-long project to repair a stretch of 680 sunol to dublin. there had be additional closures during president's date, bay, labor day and memorial day weekend. a couple weeks ago the slopes were looking kind of barren. but yesterday they were hit with more than a foot of snow. >> even two days ago, there was still a fair a dirt visible. yesterday, after just the wind and snow, most of the dirt's gone and it looks like a completely different resort. >> wow, looks like a good ride down the slopes. the resort is hopeful the season will last until early spring. we'll see. we don't have a crystal ball for early spring. >> we have a crystal ball for flex weekend, mlk weekend.

>> we'll be adding more snow. by the end of the week we could see another two to three feet of snow with temperatures cold enough for maybe a dusting of snow closer to 4,000 feet, which might put some of our higher mountain peaks in reach by wednesday. right now, 46 degrees, chilly degrees, in san jose right now. into the 30s around the tri valley. dublin and livermore. san ramon seeing 38 degrees currently, close to that, around walnut creek, it's 40. san francisco, low temperature expected to be closer to 42 degrees. 39 now in calistoga. and with the temperatures already in the 30s at 9:00, you know it's going to get colder approaching sun rise. frost advisory, north bay, south bay and santa cruz mountains through about 10:00 a.m. this is chilly sunshine. you've got the clear skies, but

around lunchtime, 40s and low 50s around the bay area. then, what had limit the daytime warming tomorrow, increasing high clouds later in the day leading up to rain chances rolling in by tuesday morning. monday we see the increase in clouds. tuesday plan on rain at times, nothing too heavy. this is a fast-moving system. morning showers mostly on tuesday. and we're not expecting significant rain. but on its heals is another fast cold-moving weather system dropping in from the north. wednesday's rain totals might be slightly higher. but no red or orange on that map indicating an inch or more of rainfall. wednesday's does have better snow support. thursday we catch a break, as we watch the waves now on the coast. we could see coastal flood

advisories and maybe a high surf advisory as the waves start to pick up tuesday and wednesday. key time frame is thursday and friday, the arrival of the king tides. the peak of high tide that occurs this time of year, and we'll see high waves likely through the end of the week. biggest potential for rainfall could set up as we head towards next weekend. a potential atmospheric river connection for next saturday that will present an opportunity for the sierra to get a lot of snow. the cold air are remain inland. snow levels at 4,000 feet. next weekend begins with some rain, and then some clearing skies heading toward sunday. so the seven-day forecast looks exactly how it should for january. cold air now, starting to bring snow to the sierra and potentially cold enough for a dusting of snow in the higher peaks of the sierra on wednesday and more rain as we roll into next weekend. in terms of the holiday weekend right now. friday could be a good travel day if you want to get to the

max flights remain grounded. they plan to release more information tomorrow. today marks three months since hamas attacked israel. october 7 they launched an attack on southern israel. following that attack, israel launched an extensive aerial bombardment of the gaza strip. benjamin netanyahu has vowed to eliminate hamas. more than 22,000 people have been killed in gaza since the war began. well, today on "meet the press", kristin welker spoke about concerns. >> it's not only a war between israel and hamas but the values of the free world as we see them. >> is this forced displacement of palestinians from gaza the official position of the israeli government, mr. president? >> absolutely, absolutely not.

totally and not agreed, not the position of the israeli government, the israeli government or public. >> benjamin netanyahu has not spoken out about those calls to displace the citizens of gaza. secretary of state antony blinken began the second day of a week-long diplomatic tour in the middle east. this is blinken's fourth visit to the region since the october 7 attack. in his first stop this morning he met with jordan's king and foreign minister and visited a world food program warehouse in amman where supplies are being stored for eventual transport to gaza. before heading to qatar. blinken addressed tension in the whole region as a result of hamas and israel. >> this is a conflict that could easily metastasize, causing even more insecurity and suffering. so, from day one, among other priorities, we have been intensely focussed on working to

prevent the conflict from spreading, and that is indeed the major focus of what is now my fourth visit to the region since october 7. >> a lot more miles after qatar. blinken is set to travel to united arab emirates, saudi arabia and israel. leaders are asking torres for resolutions about palestine. they want them to pass a resolution for palestine though nothing is on the agenda. some spoke about why they came. >> i'm palestinian, and i believe that palestinians, just like all people, deserve equal human rights. they deserve to live in safety. they deserve to live in dignity. >> others said, as the

israel-hamas war continues, they want to make sure they keep showing up at rallies to call for change on behalf of the palestinian people. and this week, a resolution will be considered calling for a cease-fire in gaza. a board of supervisors committee will decide whether to send the resolution to the full board. this is video from last month when hundreds spoke out in support of the resolution. if approved they would join rich richmond in publicly calling out the war. students are called to walk out of school in san francisco on wednesday to meet at embarcadero plaza for a rally. congressional leaders have reached a deal on how much the u.s. government will spend this year. the agreement is a significant step towards avoiding a government shutdown. the deal establishes an overall spending level of 1.5 trillion

for 2024. congress will need to allocate that money, write the bills and pass them before january 19 to avoid a partial government shutdown. california's education leaders are working to get out in front of possible cuts to public education next fiscal year. a gloomy budget forecast has them worried that legislatures will cut or defer school funding, after decades of what they see as underinvestment. the california school board association wants to see newsom and lawmakers continue to make education a priority, despite the economic down turn. they remember what happened in the 2008 recession all too well. >> schools were devastated. education funding were cut almost 20% at the state level. that trickles down to the local schools and resulted in 17,000 teacher layoffs, many layoffs of

classified and support staff. programmatic reductions and school closures. we don't want to go back to those days. >> the governor is set to release his budget proposal on wednesday. new information about the condition of the u.s. secretary of state of defense who has been in the hospital since monday. secretary of state lloyd austin had surgery back in december. it went well, but monday evening severe pain sent him to the icu. the national security council and even the president didn't know austin was in the hospital until thursday. now we're learning he is okay. he is recovering and has resumed his duties. no word on when he will be released from the hospital. some stories we're watching in the week ahead. president biden's son hunter is due in court on thursday, the first appearance on tax-related charges. prosecutors say he paid for drugs, escorts and extravagant lifestyle but did not pay his taxes from 2016 through 2020. hunter biden's attorney said

charges would never have been filed if they weren't a biden. apple faces a patent dispute over the blood oxygen technology on the apple watches. the community will come together to remember an officer killed near jack london square. he is remembered as a decorated officer, husband and son who loved oakland. a public memorial service will be held in his honor on wednesday. the family of tyre nichols held a memorial to mark the anniversary of his death. a ceremony was held at the tyre nichols skate park. friends and family were in

well, would you be willing to quarantine yourself in a hotel with people who have the flu for science? that is exactly what some researchers are asking of volunteers. university of maryland school of public health are joining forces for a study to discover how the flu spreads and effects us.

but they need volunteers, in exchange for $1900. those people will have to mingle and quarantine with others in the same air-controlled environment. some volunteers will be healthy, and some will be going through the onset of the flu. >> nobody has successfully observed influenza infection under control. >> we need to think about it, you know, when we get more of the data. >> it is centered on the hypothesis if air circulation is poor more people will get sick and if it is filtered well, fewer people will get sick. they hope it will serve as a catalyst to improve public health. got to hear this story. the first-ever commercial mission to the moon is set to launch in a number of hours carrying unusual cargo. it was developed by astro

bottic. if all goes well, it will be the first privately-run mission. but it's an unmanned mission, technically, but the spacecraft will be carrying human ashes. they partnered with other companies to allow people to have space burials. their ashes will be left on the moon. india is making strides to the stars. it launched its first-ever mission. yesterday it reached its destination. it's between the earth and sun, but outside of the moon's orbit. it will help india study the sun and the influence on space weather. rob, the temperatures are plunging. >> yeah, already down to the 30s around the tri valley. 39 in dublin. that's 29 warmer than the 10 degrees at lake tahoe. when meor

"wonka" took home the top spot at the box office for the third time. the musical starring timothee chalamet added $14 million, to britt total to $164 million. "night swim" came in second. "aqua man and the lost kingdom" came in third at just under $10 million. the first major storm dropped more than a foot of snow in the northeast this weekend. it made for treacherous travel conditions in some areas, but as you see in these videos, it also brought conditions for fun. a live look across the bay from the emeryville camera. i love that shot. we see great sunsets, and now it's crystal clear and crystal clear cold. >> it is. no clouds. we have the chilly dry air that

came in with the weather system that brought snow to the sierra. already, we take you on a tour of our temperatures around the bay area. san francisco, not too bad. low 40s heading into tomorrow morning. currently 50 degrees. san jose 46, with mostly clear skies. we'll see frosty conditions around san jose as well, and currently 40 in walnut creek. speaking of 30s, livermore, dublin, san ramon and danville have dropped into the 30s. as we showed you earlier, lake tahoe, 10 degrees. the snow that fell this weekend, a foot to 17 inches of snow came down yesterday. not going anywhere. by thursday, we're not going to get above 30. a winter storm watch posted for the tuesday-wednesday time frame across the sierra. closer to home, the frost

advisories. can you see why, with the low to mid-30s. slow warming tomorrow. sunshine around lunchtime with 40s and low 50s. then we'll see increasing clouds. and that might limit the warming during the day with highs mostly in the low 50s tomorrow. you can see the clouds dropping in out of the north as a fast-moving and breezy weather system drops in for the tuesday morning commute. we'll start tuesday with some rain, but as early as tuesday afternoon, sun comes back out and rain showers move out of bay area. so an inland-tracking storm moving quickly through the bay area is not expected to drop a lot of rain. most places a quarter of an inch or less. san jose, inland, probably not going to get a lot of rain out of the tuesday storm. wednesday might be a little more interesting. high temperature at lake tahoe at 30 degrees. we could see snow levels closer to 4,000 feet around the bay area. more rain on wednesday, and then we catch a break thursday.

speaking of the sierra, between the midweek to saturday's storm, we could be looking at another two feet or more of snowfall by the end of the week. and speaking of the weekend storm, friday, probably rain up on the north coast. stay tuned. saturday could have the potential for higher rain totals around the bay area. as you see, more snow for the sierra and clearing skies by sunday into monday of the following week. so an active seven-day forecast on top of everything that's going on. if you're out by the coast. watch out for the potential of high surf advisories returns midweek as we're nae king tide season, arriving thursday and friday. january's got a very busy slate of weather. and you're seeing a little bit of each playing out over the next seven days. >> super active. thanks. coming up next, sports, starring anthony flores joining us from levi's. >> reporter: i'm anthony flores >> reporter: i'm anthony flores where the 49er wpped upra

l.a. also resting some of their starters. fourth quarter, wentz scores on a 12-yard run. the two-point conversion was good. rams up one. niners have a chance to march down the field and win it with a field goal. but darnold puts it on the lawn. the rams recover the fumble. the rams beat the 49ers. the winning streak against the rams is over. the niners end with 12 and 5 record and turn their attention to the post season. >> that's really what we talk about all week, having the mind-set that we have to have in a couple weeks. >> reporter: one injury concern, farrell left the game after hurting his knee. there is a chance he could miss a game in the playoff. there will be no playoff for the silver and black. but the raiders did end the

season on a winning note. nice touchdown grab by davante adams. las vegas ends its season with an 8 and 9 record. in the nba, some good and some bad news for the warriors. we'll start with the bad. chris paul is expected to miss four to six weeks after he undergoes surgery to repair his fractured left hand. that's according to a report from espn. as for the good, draymond green is back. draymond green back on the bench after being reinstated from a 12-game suspension for slapping another player last month. stephen curry struggled with his shot. he scored only nine points while going scoreless behind the arc. rj barrett scored a best. and the raptors blow out the warriors, 133-118.
