extra time to scrape that frost off of the windshield and then a slow warm-up today. but we are below freezing as we take a look at our temperatures in livermore and dublin, 31 degrees there. that's one of the colder spots. we're also seeing a lot of widespread 30s across the bay area, especially for the north bay and parts of the east bay. and then as we look at our highs this afternoon, it's only going to be in the mid-50s, headed up for 55 in fremont and 55 in santa rosa. san francisco also reaching 55 degrees, and then by tomorrow we'll be tracking more rain. so i'll have more on the timeline of the rain coming up. mike, you've been tracking a major crash. >> i have. this is on the peninsula, southbound 280, south of san francisco. you notice the green sensors dominating, including here now. in the last few minutes we got word from chp they've reopened all lanes. two were blocked for a couple of hours here, there was a deadly crash and an investigation and there may be still some activity on the side of the road.

it sounds like southbound 280 has reopened and the slower sensors have just cleared from the area. meanwhile, the rest of the bay showing a smooth, easy drive. there's an advisory for wind coming through the altamont pass. no problems reported. there was a crew that was northbound 680 that was closed overnight. i believe they have cleared. i'll confirm that. back to you. >> mike, thanks. right now an investigation is unfolding after a door panel flew off an alaska airlines plane mid-flight. overnight the door was found as the faa is grounding boeing's max 9 planes, causing flight disruptions across the country. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live at sfo. there are impacts again for passengers there, right? >> reporter: that is correct, scott and laura. we saw some of those disruptions over the weekend. that will continue today, according to flightaware here at sfo, 33 united flights are canceled, 14 alaska airlines flights will be canceled today. we can take a peek at the board.

we're only seeing two canceled so far, one going to newark and the other to las vegas. we don't really know those cancellations, some of them could be departures, some of them could be arrivals. the impact of what happened friday will be seen at airports nationwide, especially for those alaska and united airlines flights. those are the two carriers that use boeing's 737 max 9 airplanes and those are the specific planes that will remain grounded pending the federal administration's investigation over what happened on that alaska airlines flight from portland, oregon, to ontario, california, friday evening. just six minutes into the two-hour flight, a plugged seal door blew out. one of the pilots declared an emergency and asked for clearance to descend down to 10,000 feet where passengers would be able to breathe without oxygen masks. the incident has been described

by the ntsb chair to have been chaotic and violent. fortunately, there have been no reports of serious injuries for the passengers and crew. nbc's tom costello sat down with ntsb chair about the consequences that this could have had. >> what could have happened if this had been at 34,000 and passengers and flight attendants were up moving about the cabin? >> first of all, this would have been a much more violent explosion of that plug. and in addition to that, there could have been some significant consequences for the passengers that were seated in that area of the plug and throughout the cabin. >> reporter: the ntsb has confirmed there is nothing on the cockpit voice recorder

because that has been overwritten. you can catch more of tom costello's interview on the "today" show later this morning. i know, scott and laura, we talked about the flights here at sfo. nationwide, unite airlines is expecting over 200 flights to be canceled today. alaska, 130 flights to be canceled. you can expect those disruptions and delays can trickle down to airports nationwide, including here at sfo. we'll be keeping a close eye on that throughout the morning. for now, back to you guys. >> exactly, we're going to feel the ramifications for quite some time. thanks for following it. a live look from southern israel toward the gaza border, there are fears the war in the middle east is expanding. a new israeli air strike in the west bank has reportedly killed seven. yesterday was said to be some of the heaviest fighting between israel and hezbollah. this comes as the u.s. secretary of state antony blinken continues a week-long tour of the middle east with a stop

today in jordan, and later this morning in san francisco leaders will revisit a proposal calling for a cease-fire in gaza. new video from last month, when hundreds of people spoke out in support of the resolution. today a supervisors committee will debate whether or not to send the resolution to the full board. if it gets approved by the san francisco board, san francisco would join oakland and richmond in publicly condemning the war. across the bay in berkeley yesterday, hundreds of palestinian supporters gathered outside the new embattled people's park calling for a cease-fire. our crews saw police carrying at least one person over a barricade. it's not clear what led to that. protesters spent hours making their voices heard along telegraph avenue. >> i just feel like we need to continue to make our voices heard for palestinian. we need to continue to make our voices heard about people's

park. >> organizers also calling for the halt of planned new student housing construction on that park property. police last week helped the school clear out the park and ring it with shipping containers so people couldn't get in. it's still not clear when the work on that development will begin. with the first contest of the 2024 presidential race just a week away, all eyes are on iowa. >> republican candidates descending on the caucus state trying to close in on the front-runner, former president donald trump. he campaigned there saturday, the third anniversary of the attack on the capitol. >> president joe biden trying to make his voice heard to voters in south carolina. good monday morning. here is a live look outside in dublin. it is all clear, but we are very chilly with temperatures in the 30s. we will stay near freezing through 8:00, and then as we go throughout the day, temperatures make it into the mid-50s. it's going to be chilly today, but at least we will have sunshine. rain comes in tomorrow. i'll time that out coming up in the full microclimate forecast. right now no delays for your timing along the peninsula. here is palo alto northbound with taillights heading toward san francisco. no delays here or on 280. we'll track your build probably starting farther east coming up. 5:15 on your monday morning. a strong start for the stock market so far in 2024. we're going to take a look at the futures this morning and see

where they are moving and where those are going to go. the dow industrial is going to lose some money, the nasdaq doing quite well. friday's stronger than expected jobs report may push mortgage rates higher. mortgage rates more closely related to government bonds than fed rates, and better than expected news on the economy can make houses more expensive. ideally, higher mortgage rates are offset by lower house prices, but we spoke to an economist from bmo who says their forecasts call for a very steady house price increase in 2024, slight rise. >> i think we can see a lot of stability in the housing market, and certainly homebuilding. we haven't been building enough houses in california and construction activity has been solid here. so we actually raised our forecast on california home

week, starting out cold and clear this morning, but tomorrow morning we'll be getting ready for rain. as we take a live look outside in san jose, getting started, people heading back to work -- and i know that probably makes it so hard to get out of bed when you know that it's going to be chilly as you step out the door. we're right now at 34 in santa rosa. it is 43 in oakland and 34 in palo alto. about the same in fremont. los gatos and morgan hill at 36 degrees. we are clear today and we're going to gradually see more clouds coming in, as we get ready for rain tomorrow. i'm stopping it at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and we see the rain already coming out of the north bay and spreading across the rest of the bay area, from the east bay to the peninsula, and to the south bay. but notice that by the evening it is already clearing out. so that's going to be a quick round of rain that will most likely bring us about a tenth of an inch of rain or less. then there's more ahead. going into wednesday, there's another system that's going to

be dropping in, also a quick-moving storm system that will bring us light amounts of rainfall. thursday and friday are dry, but then on saturday we're getting ready for more widespread rain that will continue into sunday, and then taper off. so that one looks like the one we'll be watching for the biggest potential of rain. but as of now, computer models still having a hard time resolving exactly how much rain we're going to see. and this is the lower end of the computer model, showing about an inch and a half from parts of the north bay to the coastline, and then some of our valleys getting about a half inch of rain. once again, that's the lower end. and we're going to see another 9 to 14 inches of snow between now and thursday in the sierra, and there's much more ahead going into the weekend, possibly in total about 35 inches of snow for kingvale just this week. so that's going to be amazing, seeing that we are seeing snow levels coming up. we're also dealing with some

cold temperatures. take a look at thursday morning's temperature, 31 degrees. that's here in the bay area. it's going to be cold and that's after that first wave of rain comes through and we get ready for the one for the weekend. and looking at the chilly temperatures that will continue in san francisco, highs in the mid to upper 50s all week long. mike, it seems like a pretty calm commute right now. >> kind of risky saying that. you don't want to jinx anything. the only thing on the grid of major concern are folks traveling northbound on 680, because they still have the closure that was scheduled to be picked up at 5:00. we know that typically lasts until about 5:30, 5:45, and there may be another 20 minutes or so where the crews are still blocking northbound 680. a live camera from caltrans does show no lights traveling north right now. that should be cleared, but until then, 84 is your

this week. the growing concern among educators that schools may take the biggest hit. this is "today in the bay." and this is also monday morning, 5:30. thanks for starting your week with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has the day off. let's start with the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect this morning. it's been cold. >> yes, and you can expect a little bit of extra time to scrape the frost all of the windshield as you head out the door. we're seeing some of those ice crystals on the elevated surfaces in a lot of valleys and the frost advisory continues until 10:00. our current temperatures, 36 in morgan hill and los gatos, palo alto 33 degrees, and 31 in dublin. we're also seeing a lot of mid-30s in much of the north bay. we're headed for the mid-50s for this afternoon. it will start out sunny, but gradually more clouds come in and rain will be here tomorrow. so i'll have more on that in a

few minutes. mike, you're getting a broader view of the golden gate bridge. >> it's beautiful. we're looking at the southbound side. i look at the traffic. southbound headlights, i was looking for the interruption. there's nothing on the grid, so that's good news. i refreshed the report and there's nothing on the grid southbound across the bridge or coming from the marin side. that is great news. the reason we see green sensors there, the yellow arrows, the little blips coming into concord for westbound highway 4 and westbound 37 out of vallejo, a little slowing for the sensors showed up across the bay bridge. overall, the commute is still light. we're seeing the commute start to build. we'll talk about the tri-valley coming up. it is 5:32 right now. developing right now, bay area flyers may be facing disruptions with boeing 737 max planes grounded nationwide. this follows the midair scare after a panel suddenly blew out. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live at sfo.

ginger, investigators have located a very critical piece of evidence. >> reporter: that is true, scott. they updated the public with finding the door panel that was actually -- the update from the ntsb last night, a person by the name of bob, who is only known as bob, has taken photos and contacted the ntsb. we're told yesterday there were pictures of the door panel that he says he found in his back yard. now, that incident, that midair scare, as it's been called, has really impacted flights nationwide, including the airport here in san francisco, other bay area airports. here at sfo, 33 united airlines flights are impacted by the grounding of those max 9 airplanes. 14 alaska airline flights are impacted or canceled because of that, we're focusing on those two airlines because those are

will really help in this investigation, as you mentioned, is that door panel has been found. that was the update last night from ntsb chair jennifer homendy. i mentioned the 33 united airlines flight and the 14 alaska airlines flights that have been canceled. there's one to newark this morning that's been canceled, an alaska airline flight, and another flight going to las vegas. we won't be surprised if we see more of those cancellations and disruptions throughout the day, because this is really something that will impact airports nationwide. back to you guys. >> most definitely. folks have to plan ahead as well. thank you so much. it is 5:33. happening today, a man who pleaded no contest to a deadly shooting at a south bay supermarket will learn his sentence. that shooting happened in june of 2022 at a safeway on hamilton in san jose's willow glen. family members say it started

when a safeway worker, a 24-year-old, confronted an 18-year-old man trying to steal alcohol. last year, the defendant pleaded no contest in that killing. he faces 50 years to life in prison. also today in san jose, two of the three defendants tied to what authorities believe was an exorcism ritual that killed a young girl are set to return to court. investigators say renee hernandez and renee hernandez santos helped claudia santos smother her 3-year-old daughter in a church in september of 2021. court documents suggest the trio believed she was possessed by an evil spirit. two men, her grandfather and uncle, due in court today, for a plea hearing. the mother's case being handled separately. seven people were hurt, two critically, after a rollover crash in eastern contra costa county. it happened around 5:00 last night in byron on vasco road

near walnut boulevard. chp says the driver of a truck illegally tried to pass another car, lost control, struck another car, flipped over. witnesses say a woman and child were ejected from that truck. the chp is not saying what kind of charges the drivers will face. 5:36 right now. uc berkeley leaders are hoping to have people's park completely closed off to the public as soon as today. last week police helped clear out the park. at that point crews started lining up stacked shipping containers to encircle it. the streets around the park are also still blocked by pedestrian barriers and there's a heavy police presence there. school leaders believe they're about to get the green light on starting a long anticipated student housing project. >> we're awaiting the court decision. once we are clear in terms of legal terms, we'll proceed with construction of both urgently needed student housing, as well as permanent supportive housing for extremely low income people in the berkeley community. >> once the park is completely

enclosed, school leaders are promising to reopen all surrounding streets. opponents, meantime, are vowing to continue their fight to preserve the park. a look at the state capitol this morning. governor gavin newsom on wednesday will lay out his 2024 budget plan. california is facing what's expected to be a $68 billion budget deficit. just a few years ago, california had a $97 billion surplus, which it gave back to taxpayers. state analysts late last year hinted at cutting spending for schools and community colleges. as deep as the cuts as the ones in the recession years of 2008 and 2009. here is a spokesman from the california school board association. >> schools were devastated, the budgets for education funding were cut almost 20% at the state level. that trickles downhill to the local schools and it resulted in

17,000 teacher layoffs, many thousands of layoffs of classified and support staff, programatic reductions and school closures. we don't want to go back to those days. >> education advocates say 17,000 teachers lost their jobs over five years from 2008. they're hoping the state, instead, cuts back on special projects and considers dipping into reserves to help keep school funding in place. this morning, a winter wonderland in the sierra. recent storms have granted skiers' wishes, dumping a good amount of snow over the weekend. some areas got over a foot of fresh powder. skiers and snowboarders are excited. >> even two days ago there was a fair amount of dirt visibility. yesterday after the wind and snow all day, most of the dirt is gone and it looks like a completely different resort. >> i haven't headed up yet. resorts say they're hopeful the season will last now until early spring. so let's bring in meteorologist kari hall now.

we know more rain is on the way here in the bay area. this means more potential snow up there? >> absolutely. let's take a look at some of the weekend snowfall totals we had in the sierra. palisades had 17 inches of snow. really great to see that. north star, 15 inches. bear valley, 14. 12 in homewood and heavenly. we are going to see more active weather, and right now the atmospheric river is to the north, that will begin to work it's way to the bay area, with another 9 to 14 inches of snow between now and thursday, with that snow starting to come down tomorrow afternoon. and then looking ahead to the weekend, if you're going, there will be additional snowfall, and into next week we're looking at possibly another couple of feet of snow in total, and could be even higher for spots like kingvale, as well as twin bridges and kirkwood. we're going to be tracking all of this with more rounds of rain for the bay area. i'll have more coming up in a few minutes.

mike, you've been tracking what seems like monday light? >> it was, and then it got really slow all of a sudden on the bay bridge. now the incline looking clear. we haven't seen any of the updates from chp of any disturbance, but look at that. the clustering is still going on as you're approaching the bay bridge. that's the live camera. i turned toward the sensors and saw a lot of slowing in the treasure island tunnel, going from red to orange and orange to red on the incline. i haven't seen a backup for metering lights yet. we'll watch for that impact. there's a slower drive right now oakland into san francisco. looks like it's sorting itself out. no updates from chp. hopefully it was someone who hit their brakes hard and that rippled back. meanwhile, there's a little more slowing on highway 37, a tad bit. highway 4 sorted itself out, slow from bay point to pittsburg. overall, a smooth drive.

good monday morning. right now at 5:44, time to get ready and head back to work. as you're standing in front of the closet, you'll want to layer up. it's starting out so cold, temperatures in the upper 30s. we'll be there through 8:00. and then slowly we warm up today as we start to see more clouds coming in. i'll talk about temperatures and that next round of rain coming up in the full microclimate forecast. and right now we're talking about the changes on the bay bridge. so it's starting to slow down, getting bunched up on the incline. there is a disabled vehicle reported on the span. traffic is trying to get by. there's a lane that is affected by that slow roller in the backup at the metering lights. they're on now, so is the

commute. we'll track the progress coming up. new this morning, the white house citing increased enforcement by mexico for the recent sharp decrease in illegal border crossings. immigration leaders say arrests fell to about 2,500 last week, down from 10,000 over several days last month. the drop comes as the white house leans on mexico to curb a record flow of migrants. mexico using planes, trains and buses to move more migrants toward the southern part of that country. critics argue that includes many who are seeking political asylum from venezuela. with january marking blood donor month, the red cross is making a new call to help boost supplies. the red cross says fewer donors over the holidays is leading to a serious shortage, and during blood donor month not only are they thanking those who have stepped up to save lives, but they're asking more people to do the same. leaders say the need across the u.s. for blood is constant, but the line of donors is not.

freezing temperatures in a few spots like dublin, now checking in at 31 degrees. it is 32 in livermore. elsewhere, we are just a degree or two above freezing in a lot of the valleys. and even some low 40s for oakland as well as san mateo. but then as we go throughout the day, eventually it's going to get a little better. we're only headed for the mid-50s. that's a look at morgan hill, going from 36 at 8:00 to 55 at 2:00 today. we'll also see more clouds coming in, but overall it's going to be much cooler than we even typically see for this time of year. we're staying dry for today, but tomorrow is when the rain comes back, and it looks like it's in and out of here fairly quickly. by 10:00, it's already pushing through the peninsula and the south bay, clearing from the north bay, and then as we go into the rest of the day, it's going to be clearing out. so we're looking at most of us getting about a tenth of an inch of rain with this round coming in. but then there's more ahead, with another system dropping in on wednesday, and it does look

slightly heavier. but it also will be moving fairly quickly and clearing by thursday. we're dry on friday as well. the weekend is a storm we'll have to watch. this one looks like it's packing a lot more moisture and may tap into an atmospheric river. but then as it moves through on sunday, it's tapering off. already pushing to the south. then we'll see what we get from all of that rainfall. but as of now, the model is still disagreeing on how much we could see. a lot of the heavier rain staying to the north, while much of the bay area in the red, could possibly see about an inch and a half, and then up to about a half inch of rain for some of those other areas farther inland. so we are watching two big waves of rain coming in for tuesday and wednesday, and then again on saturday. and it's going to be windy, but notice overall our temperatures will be chilly. we're staying in the 50s throughout much of the week. mike, there's a slowdown on the bay bridge? >> yeah, because of a slower

new video this morning of a dramatic rescue near big sur. the chp posted videos of teams lifting a 19-year-old hiker from an embankment near the pine ridge trail head. this unfolded thursday. the victim's girlfriend managed to call for help. ground rescuers had to transport him for hours to a place where a helicopter could pick him up. chp is not saying what kind of injuries he has. still no word what sparked a weekend fire which heavily damaged an east bay church. it happened yesterday afternoon at the evangelist community church in pittsburg. firefighters say no one was there at the time. the fire started in the main
