>> an exciting end to the nfl regular season with the road to the super bowl now set. today, monday, january 8th, 2024. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb. from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> hi there and good morning, welcome to "today". nice to have you with us at the start of the week. i am so looking forward to hearing from mary lou retton. her first interview since she had that real health scare. >> it is her first interview. it's an exclusive with the olympic gold medalist. she was hospitalized back in october. we knew it was a rare form of pneumonia. she described her moment for moment fight for her life. they told her daughters to say good-bye to mary lou at one point. it was really sad. but she is on the mend. she is back, and we're going to have our conversation coming up in just a little bit. she's a fighter. she always has been. >> you can see she's still fighting as we speak. we begin this morning with updates on two major stories. first of all, another winter

storm is on the move this week. millions are still cleaning up from that weekend nor'easter. this new round is set to bring plunging temps, more snow, and flooding rain. meantime, a major development overnight in the investigation into that alaska airlines flight. the part that flew off mid-flight has now been found. >> yes. it was found in the backyard of a home in oregon. boeing's 737 max 9 will remain grounded as this investigation unfolds. we've got it covered this morning. let us get started with nbc news senior correspondent tom costello. tom, good morning to you. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, savannah. this was a new plane. alaska just took possession of it in october. the cockpit voice recorder was overwin, there's no data on there that's usable to the ntsb. the ntsb also interviewed the crew, they're being heralded as heroes for their professionalism. suffering a major decompression explosion as this plane was

flying from portland, oregon to california. this morning a critical discovery after that very close call in the skies. >> i'm excited to announce that we found the door plug. >> reporter: the ntsb saying overnight a teacher in portland contacted investigators after he found the missing piece, a door plug, in his backyard, two days after the decompression explosion at 16,000 feet, which twisted and bent nearby seats and sucked the headrests and cushions out of the 737 max 9. >> alaska. seattle, alaska, just -- >> reporter: one teenage boy had his shirt pulled off of him. a sock was found stuck in the plane's frame. one flight attendant suffered a knee injury. the ntsb flight says if it happened at cruising altitude, 34,000 feet, it could have been deadly with passengers pulled out of the whole. >> there could have been some significant consequences for the

passengers that were seated in that area of the plug and throughout the cabin, really. >> reporter: as cold wind ripped through the cabin, the force of the explosion pulled the cockpit door open, slamming it against the lavatory. passengers describe terror on board. >> there was a big boom or a mini explosion in the rear of the plane. >> my focus in that moment was just breathe into the oxygen mask and trust that the flight crew will do everything they can to keep us safe. >> reporter: it happened behind the plane's left wing, where a hole is cut for an operational emergency exit. but alaska airlines didn't need it, so the door was plugged and sealed, leaving an ordinary window. investigators will look at whether that plug was properly bolted in place during manufacturing. meanwhile, the faa has grounded 171 max 9s in the u.s., forcing

alaska and united airlines to cancel hundreds of flights. alaska airlines and united are the only airlines to fly the max 9 in the united states, and they've had to cancel flights, united 204 flights cancelled, alaska about 139, more cancellations coming through the week, and that's left some passengers stranded, they simply can't get back. one family stranded in jamaica. they're not allowed to get back to denver for another week, we're told. in the meantime, the ntsb looking into why it is that several crews flying that same plane reported pressurization warning lights on three flights prior to this one, and yet why was that plane still flying? alaska says the plane was told it could not -- rather the crews were told they could not fly over water until they solved the pressurization issue, and then of course we had a serious pressurization explosion on friday night, a lot to investigate, savannah, back to you. >> a that sounds like a pretty good lead there, tom, thank you very much, appreciate the update.

meantime, cleanup is just getting started from that weekend storm that left a trail of snow and rain up and down the east coast, and another storm already in the works. we're going to get to al's forecast in just a moment, but first, nbc's kathy park is in massachusetts, a snowy massachusetts, hey, kathy. >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning to you, yeah, the weekend storm had a little bit of everything in the northeast, rain, snow and ice, here in worcester, 13 inches of snow, is a a lot of cleanup ahead. but the heavy snow and ice still weighing down these branches and limbs and while the storm is out of here, there's another one right behind it. those are the two airlines in this morning millions of americans waking up to a blast of winter weather, much of the northeast digging out from one of the biggest snowstorms in nearly two years. snow buried portions of pennsylvania and massachusetts. some spots reporting over 18 inches with snow and ice quickly piling up, slick conditions sent cars and even

tractor-trailers sliding acrossf new england highways. >> it's just maintaining your vehicle, put snow tires on it, be prepared. >> reporter: the storm cutting off power to tens of thousands and more extreme weather down south. >> oh, my god, that just caught on fire. >> reporter: a tornado with 80-mile-per-hour winds, barrelling through fort lauderdale saturday, damaging property, and power lines. back in the northeast, the snow even sharing a spotlight with football fans and players at gillette stadium. >> it is definitely getting colder, and players are certainly feeling the effects of it. >> reporter: this year's first winter punch, dangerous for some but plenty of fun for others. >> my son was so upset why we didn't get any snow in december, so i told him, here it is. >> reporter: and back here in worcester, temps dipped into the 20s, so ice is a big issue this morning. but over the next 24 hours, a big change is coming, rain is in

the forecast, several inches of rain, so that could lead to rapid snow melt, especially with large snow piles like this, and it's heightened the risk for flash floods. hoda? >> kathy, thank you. let's bring in mr. roker, more on the storm, another one that's already been brewing you've been talking about. >> this is a high-impact situation, good morning, everybody, take a look at these storm alerts, literally from coast-to-coast, we've got wind alerts for 108 million people, from the pacific northwest, all the way to the east coast. flood alerts, up and down the eastern seaboard, winter weather alerts for 43 million people, stretching from michigan all the way into the rockies. so here we go. this storm system builds, we've got blizzard conditions across the plains, severe weather going to be developing along the gulf coast, and we're really concerned about this, we've got a risk of severe weather, enhanced risk, from central louisiana to the panhandle of florida, and we also have a tornado risk from houston all the way to the panhandle, but an enhanced risk, ef-2 tornadoes,

or greater, from central louisiana to the panhandle, these are nocturnal tornadoes, twice as deadly. we're going to be watching this. wind gusts up to 75 miles per hour. tomorrow, the snow will stretch into the great lakes, heavy rain targeting the east coast, from new england all the way down to florida all that snow is going to be melting, and then we're going to get heavy rain on top of it. flooding is going to be a problem, and tomorrow in the evening we've got an enhanced risk again. panama city up to wilmington and central north carolina, strong tornadoes from wilmington to charleston, panama city as well, strong wind gusts and then the system moves out and more snow comes into the interior northeast. winds are a big problem, strong winds in the entire country, wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour, difficult travel conditions, widespread power outages, moderate risk tuesday for flooding, we're talking about in the northeast upwards of four to five inches of rain on top of the snow that's fallen, five to seven inches of rain down to the south. so, guys, lots of problems,

flooding, tornadoes, high winds, it's going to be a real mess over the next 48 hours. >> al, thank you very much. secretary of defense lloyd austin is facing intense scrutiny this morning over an undisclosed hospital stay and treatment in the icu. he was admitted one week ago but senior white house officials were not told for three days. nbc's hallie jackson joins us with the details. hallie, let's go through the timeline here, when he had his initial medical intervention, the icu, and when the disclosure came. >> the initial elective procedure happened a couple of days before christmas, december 22nd, an overnight stay. the secretary goes back to the hospital with severe pain, the pentagon says, into the icu at walter reed ed, on january 1st, on new year's day. the next day you had some of his operational responsibilities transferred to his deputy, but she didn't find out, according to the pentagon, why that was happening, the pentagon says

typically that could happen for multiple reasons, happens from time to time. she didn't find out the secretary was in the hospital until january 4th, that thursday when top white house officials were informed as well and then the public found out january 5th on that friday, that lag time, that period of several days, that's what's causing this intense scrutiny, all of these questions, savannah, think about the timing here, there's a war in ukraine, there's a war in the middle east, there are regional tensions in the red sea and elsewhere. there's a lot going on in the world, and that's why there is such a spotlight on what has happened this past week. >> yeah, and the deputy, who didn't know why she was being tapped to take over those duties actually was in puerto rico at the time, as you know, hallie. what's the likely fallout here? what's the unanswered questions this morning? are there going to be heads rolling, as there often are in washington when something like this happens. >> great question, savannah. this is a big deal. the pentagon says the secretary has the no plans to resign and the president, after speaking with the secretary on saturday night, according to a white house official, says the

conversation was warm, says he's looking forward to seeing secretary austin back in the pentagon soon. so those are the signals you're getting on that end. from congress, you've got a lot of questions, a lot of concerns, including from the top republican and democrat on the house armed services committee who say, yeah, they're happy the secretary's recovering, by the way, he's still in the hospital, so far as we know, but they do wonder, they do have real questions about how this whole thing was handled. now, the secretary himself is taking responsibility for this disclosure, in a statement he says he recognizes he could have done a better job ensuring that the public was appropriately informed, he says he commits to doing better, he takes responsibility for decisions about disclosure. let me tell you where a lot of questions are coming now, around staff here, the pentagon says the secretary's chiefs of staff didn't make the required notification for the -- notifications that should have happened because she was sick, that is where i think you're seeing some questions, one former defense official tells me that these staff questions, either an issue of perhaps

incompetence, or empowerment. there are a lot of people that want answers and this is what the pentagon and the white house will be called to the carpet on in the days to come. >> hallie jackson in washington, thank you. let us turn to the presidential race, the iowa caucuses, one week away, the republican field barn storming the state over the weekend, challengers to front runner donald trump hoping for a late surge to close that gap, garrett haake joins us in des moines. hey, garrett, good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda, morning, all of the candidates criss-crossing the hawkeye state over the weekend asking iowans for their support in a race donald trump has been running away with. the rest of the candidates, now running out of time to catch up. in iowa with the 2024 campaign kicking off one week from today. >> hello, iowa. happy new year. >> reporter: polling shows it is donald trump's race to lose. mr. trump leading the hawkeye

state by a wide margin, urging his supporters not to become complacent. >> pretend you are one point down. you are one point down. you have to get out and you have to vote, vote, vote. you have to do it by big, big margin. >> reporter: the former president downplaying the violence of the january 6th attack on the capitol on its third anniversary saturday. calling those convicted of crimes for their actions that day million spent on tv ads alone in iowa so far, the caucus is now shaping up to be a battle for second place between former un ambassador nikki haley and ron desantis. trading barbs on the trail this weekend. >> donald trump is running for his issues. nikki haley is running for her donors' issues.

for all of it. kalee, good morning. >> reporter: hey. good morning, guys. from taylor and oprah to leo and scorsese, it was a great night. here in l.a. with the globes officially kicking off awards season. stars of the big and small screen were on hand. the energy and excitement was palpable. for those keeping score on who won big it was the critically acclaimed film "oppenheimer" that came out on top. oppenheimer blasting the golden globes competition, leading the night with five wins, including best picture drama, best director, best actor and best supporting actor for robert downy jr. >> to my fellow nominees, let's not pretend this is a compliment. this is a first time. this is more of a most improved player thing. >> reporter: the stars shined for the first major awards show. since the actors and writers strike shut down hollywood. >> what i'm so glad is that the strike ended and that we all got to be here and that we can celebrate.

to continue their fight to pre preserve the park in its current form. today san francisco leaders will revisit a proposal calling for a cease-fire in gaza. this is video from last month. hundreds of people spoke out in support of the resolution. today a supervisor's committee will debate whether to send the resolution to the full board. if it gets approved, san francisco will join oakland and richmond in publicly condemning the war. it is a chilly start across the bay area this monday morning. any chance of a warm-up? >> it's going to be very slow to happen as we go throughout the day. we are under a front advisory for areas shaded in blue until 10:00 this morning. you may head out the door and have to get that frost off of the windshield. we are below freezing in dublin and livermore. we're in the low 30s in fremont and palo alto and mid-30s for much of the north bay. after this cold start, we're only headed for temperatures in the mid to upper 50s, and it will be mostly sunny today, with clouds and even some rain moving

>> it is carrying what could be the first commercial landing to touchdown on the moon. it is the first lunar landing to launch from the united states since 1972 if all goes right, the mission should culminate with an attempted landing on february 23rd. we will start this half hour with hoda's exclusive interview with the legendary gymnast mary lou retton >> yeah. she was an adorable teenager she had the pixie haircut at the olympics back in 1984 in los angeles, winning america's first ever gold medal in women's gymnastics it was tough to learn in october mary lou was depravely ill. she had a rare form of pneumonia. she's out of the hospital recovering at home in texas. where we caught up with her. while she's not out of the woods, mary lou wanted to share a message of gratitude and hope. >> you know, i just thought i was a washed up old athlete, but

the love was just -- it touched me it touched me. >> to hear you say the words, "i thought i was a washed up old athlete" like hits me in the soul because i don't know if you are aware, but you are someone who people mark time with. -- y indelible mark on people's lives. and i'm sure you have felt the wave. >> i have. i have. i mean, now that i'm alive and i made it through, there was so many more you are someone who people think about her standing on top of that podium in 1984 in that red, white and blue leotard and pixie haircut. the first american woman ever to win a gold medal in gymnastics,

and the ground swell of pride and adoration america felt for her. she was on every magazine cover, in every ad. >> you only get out of it what you put into it, so energize it. >> and even the first woman athlete ever on a wheaties cereal box >> what did you have for breakfast this morning >> wheaties, of course >> reporter: she was america's sweetheart, and she set the stage for th golden age of american women's gymnastics, which continues its historic run today. >> that dream to stand up there on the medal stand and watch the flag rise and the national anthem play, that's what i worked a lifetime for, for that feeling, and it will never go away. >> and that warm feeling for mary lou has never gone away for many, which is why it was so troubling when her daughters announced in october that their mother, a beloved icon, was fighting for her life in a texas hospital with a rare form of pneumonia. mary lou's eldest daughter shayla joined us for this

interview because, quite simply, mary lou doesn't remember much of her month-long hospital stay. you have a breathing apparatus, oxygen >> i am on oxygen. >> i feel like you're in a vulnerable state >> very much so. i'm very private. >> i know. >> and to come out and talk about it, usually my interviews are, oh, yes, it felt great to win the olympics, you know this is different. this is serious, and this is life and i am so grateful to be here. i am blessed to be here. because there was a time when they were about to put me on life-support. >> it sounds like you are and have been a very healthy human being. >> yes. >> how are you feeling in october before all this happened >> the day before -- >> we got our nails done. >> we got our nails done. >> right i was feeling tired. but i'm thinking i turn 56. this month >> you were very out of breath. >> out of breath. >> the next day mary lou was

supposed to meet her daughters at a football game in dallas hours from home. she never showed up. >> i couldn't. i literally was laying on my bedroom floor, and i said i can't do this. i didn't know what was wrong with me. >> what did you feel >> i couldn't breathe. >> because your breath. >> i couldn't -- you know how you want to just -- i still can't. but take that big deep breath. >> couldn't do it. >> i still can't do it >> so you were by yourself at home >> i was by myself at home. >> but the luckiest of circumstances, a neighbor noticed a car door left open in her driveway and went to alert mary lou. >> and she came in the house she knows my code. and saw me and found me. >> oh, my gosh. >> and pretty much saved my life i mean, i was -- what did she say? white, blue? i don't remember it. >> do you remember her seeing her? >> i remember them coming in, but that's pretty much it. >> mary lou was taken to a local er by the neighbor where she was admitted and diagnosed with

pneumonia. >> it was a bad experience. >> it wasn't the greatest experience. >> what made it bad? >> i wasn't being treated. >> it wasn't taking us seriously as i think that it was. >> so a couple of days you were there. >> and they sent her home. >> they let you go home. >> yes mother almost unresponsi and rushed her to a bigger hospital in a nearby city, a name they wish to keep private. after discovering her oxygen levels were dangerously low and dropping, mary lou was immediately admitted to the icu where the medical team worked furiously to figure out what was wrong. >> she was tested for everything. covid, flu, you name it. >> rsv, all of the things. and there was nothing. >> everything negative. >> and my x-raies. >> you can't even see her lungs. >> just completely white

exactly why it gave way. why did that plug go and why was there this massive decompression event at about 16,000 feet? 171 max 9s are now grounded. most of those are flown by alaska airlines and united airlines those airlines have essentially had to cancel hundreds of flights because those planes are out of service the faa chief says they will not lift that grounding until they are 100% satisfied that they understand what happened with this plane on alaska airlines on friday night and also understand whether or not they've got a wider problem with the entire fleet of the max 9s. you may know the 737 max 8 was involved in those two overseas crashes that we had been reporting on extensively for years. this is the max 9. it is a different fuselage link. but essentially, it's the same plane, the sam computer system that's been updated and upgraded of course, since the max 8 crashes. nonetheless, boeing very much in the spotlight yet again. scrutiny over why they have quality assurance issues,
