this moment by offering car rides to folks who need help getting to the caucus sites. the haley and desantis campaigns hoping to connect in person with caucus goers trying to win them over. will it make a difference? the polling here in iowa is consistent over the months with mr. trump having a dominating lead and high enthusiasm from his supporters. those who do not like the former president can weigh in as well. without a democratic caucus this year, independents and democrats can change party registration at the caucus monday night to participate on the gop side. i had a conversation with a democrats in des moines and one in debuke, to stop nikki haley. if haley can finish second ahead of desantis, she could make a compelling case this is a two-person race with her and the former president.
5:10 am
>> vaughn hillyard, thank you for braving the cold. let's get more now from kristen welker. kristen, so much is who is coming in it second place. if the former president dominates, is this game over? >> reporter: peter and laura, anything can happen on monday night. look, as vaughn was just saying, former president donald trump has been running strong in the polls. right now, if he wins, the question we are asking is how big is that margin. here is the magic number. 50. if mr. trump gets over 50%, that would be a sign that he is looking very strong throughout the primary race. if he gets less than 50%, that could raise questions of the
5:11 am
strength of his candidacy. we will look at the figure and turnout. he could have an historic win here. as vaughn was talking about the fight for second place, for governor ron desantis, iowa is really a must-finish strong state. guys, he has to have a strong finish here if he doesn't come in second place and that means it raises question he is if he should stay in the race. he will go to south carolina after caucus night here. of course, new hampshire votes first. i don't have to tell you that. why south carolina? i spoke with ron desantis' aide and he wants to take the fight to nikki haley's home state. he wants to send a powerful message to the trump campaign that he is in this race for the long haul. again, d to say what, if any state, he can win beyond iowa.
5:12 am
peter and laura. >> kristen, it is freezing there, we can tell. people in iowa are hard core. they know how to deal with cold. any sense it would impact turnout this time? >> reporter: that's really the big question. the weather is the x-factor. no doubt about that. iowans take so much pride in being the first in the nation to make their voices heard in the presidential contest. one told me they are made from hardy stock. we are not just talking about cold temperatures, we are talking about dangerously cold temperatures. that means if you are a senior or if you are living in a rural area, it could be tougher to get to the caucus site. who will turn out? the faithful.
5:13 am
trump's supporters are enthusiastic and dedicated. if you talk to folks around here, they will say they feel like a lower turnout could potentially benefit the former president. we have to wait and see what happens. i cannot underscore this enough. the weather will be an x-factor on monday night. >> so it begins. kristen, nice to see you this morning. tune in to "meet the press" when kristen's guests are the republican iowa senator. to turning overseas now. overnight, the u.s. launched another round of air strikes against the yemen houthi rebels who have been attacking cargo ships in the red sea. we have aaron gilchrist at the white house with more. aaron. >> reporter: laura, good morning. u.s. officials are calling this strike a follow-on action to the devastating strike on thursday. late last night, the navy fired

missiles at the houthi radar site in yemen. we are awaiting the assessment on how successful that attack was. this came a day after american and british forces targeted several locations in houthi-controlled yemen. the military saying 60 targets hit with munitions. they were command and control depots and air defense radar systems. the national security council says the aim here was to knock out the iran-backed militia ability to knock drones into the red sea. since november 19th, they tried to attack 28 times. at least once, a helicopter was fired at before boats being sank. president biden said he is not looking for war with the houthis or with iran, but will respond

5:16 am
blinding so the missiles stop coming in. point two is deterrence. say to the houthis and sponsors in iran that you better stop now. we have more we can do. deterrence and a threat of escalation. third and finally, there is a signal internationally here with 20 nations so far in the coalition. we need to be the leader and help stand together against these threats to global shipping. >> admiral, you talk about the houthis sponsors in iran with intelligence. there is the fear this is a proxy war we are witnessing. how concerned are the americans that this escalates into a wider war? >> i think, unfortunately, peter, there is a one in three chance of escalation. very broad escalation. u.s. and iranian war ships firing at each other.
5:17 am
that is not insignificant. i think there is a two in three chance we avoid that because neither iran nor the united states, particularly a biden administration in a political year, are looking for that broader war. let's hope it stays tactical. the houthis get the message and tehran tells them to slow down and back down. i think that's probably how it plays out better than even chance. there is risk. >> you also have risk here to the supply chain. volvo and tesla planning to suspend production overseas in europe because of the situation. talk about the real-world impact for people at home. >> the biggest thing, laura, is the fact that major shippers hauling oil, cars, parts, toys and everything means they can't go through the red sea and suez

canal. it is a short cut. the container ships and tankers like you are showing have to go around the bottom of africa. that adds days to any voyage or weeks actually. that adds cost. you will see it at the gas pump and in consumer goods. again, one of the last things the biden team wants to see is a resurgence of inflation. bottom line here, 15% of the world's shipping passes through the waters. if we allow pirates to close them, you see that rise in cost. >> admiral, thank you for your time and expertise. >> tomorrow marks 100 days with israel and hamas. israel is not just fighting on the ground in gaza, but the international court. accusing the israelis of genocide. we have josh lederman with more

from tel aviv. what is the latest on that? >> reporter: peter, good morning. after two days of hearings, it is now up to the u.n. highest court to decide whether to order israel to halt the war in gaza. in court, israel defended the war in hamas. pointing out that hamas vowed to repeat the attacks again and again. south africa says the scale of destruction in gaza proves the israel intent is genocide. the u.n. and aid groups are unable to get aid to the places that need it. there is one piece of good news. israel announced a deal has been struck with hamas to get badly needed medicine into the gaza strip for civilian palestinians and for israeli hostages there. that deal was brokered by qatar.

it is separate from talks about another cease-fire or another deal to get more hostages out. >> josh lederman, thank you. still 130 hostages. thank you. now to an overseas election that could have major ramifications back here in the united states. the polls in the presidential election in taiwan closed hours ago and there is breaking news this morning with the results of that election. nbc's janis mackey frayer has more. >> reporter: laura, good morning. it appears william lai of the dpp will be taiwan's next president. the results of the election are still confirmed. they have not finished counting the ballots yet. he took a strong lead in this race. his main competitor, hu yu-li has conceded defeat.
5:21 am
telling supporters he is sorry for disappointing everyone. these contenders were neck and neck. lai had been campaigning mainly on the status quo platform. appealing to people in taiwan who want things to stay the same. he was effectively saying he was going to continue the foreign policy issues that were continued with no talks with mainland china and continued support of the united states. they continue with the weapons purchases from the u.s. a live victory will not go over well. they see william lai as a separatist and troublemaker. a u.s. delegation will be coming here in the next coming days.
