7:06 am
was visiting a male friend in san jose. they do not believe she knew the two suspects, and say it does not appear the suspects used a weapon. >> people who saw the alert sent out by police reacted to the kidnapping. >> that is worrying to hear that happened in san jose. i'm glad she was found. i hope she's okay. >> very surprising. generally a safe area. >> reporter: police hope their interview with the victim will provide more information that can help them arrest a second suspect. marianne favro, "today in the bay." >> our team sent out an alert as soon as we learned silva was found. be sure to download our free nbc bay area app to get breaking news and weather alerts sent straight to your phone. people against the u.s.' aid to israel and the war with hamas are directing their attention at the port of oakland, where they say a ship that took weapons and equipment to israel is now on its way back to the bay area. the hundreds of demonstrators

7:09 am
opportunities for students and faculty. professor james taylor, who is a politics teacher at the university of san francisco, a private jesuit university in the city, says securing a uc campus within the city limits likely would help mayor breed who is up for re-election in the fall. >> this is big news statewide. it's a win for students and for research, for innovation. downtown san francisco. >> the uc system already operates uc law in the city, formally called uc hastings, as well as the ucsf school of head sip. uc berkeley also has an extension campus in downtown san francisco. we reached out to the mayor's office but have not heard back. on friday, though, breed's office told the san francisco chronicle that the city and the uc system are in "continuing conversations." but continued that there are no concrete proposals, and that they are exploring a lot of different options. 7:09 right now.

adam schiff. he held a dangerous president accountable. he also helped lower drug costs, bring good jobs back home, and build affordable housing. now he's running for the senate. our economy, our democracy, our planet. this is why we fight. i'm adam schiff, and i approve this message.
7:12 am
welcome back. it's the final weekend before the iowa waukes caucuses tomorr. donald trump dominates, leaving ron desantis and nikki haley in a race for second. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of "meet the press." i'm thrilled to see you are not outside in the cold this morning. you're there in des moines. as i understand it, you'll have the results of the final des moines register nbc news poll this morning. iowa tends to provide an initial signal of which direction a presidential election is headed, as we likely all know by now. what is that poll revealing? >> well, kira, i'm thrilled to be inside as well.
7:13 am
it's warm and toasty in here. the poll is fascinating. it shows former president trump with a really commanding lead over the entire field, nearly a 30-point lead over his nearest rival is nikki haley. she's edged her way into second place. we're watching to see if trump wins, how big of a margin. then that all-important race for second place. governor ron desantis is focused almost exclusively on the state of iowa. can he come in second place here? if he doesn't, can he continue with his campaign? he's already announced stops in south carolina and new hampshire. but boy, it's going to be tough if he doesn't have a strong showing in iowa. >> it will be interesting to see the results of those polls. i understand you have steve kornacki with you and you have interviews with joni ernst from iowa. so we'll be looking forward to the intel you gather on your show this morning. kristen, thanks for joining us. as mentioned, we hope you join kristen for this morning's "meet the press." she'll have those interviews

week, j. crew is closing, as well. retailers have been leaving the city for quite some time now. many of them cite rising crime concerns. and kelly moore paints, we reported that the company, which was founded in san carlos on the peninsula in 1946 is shutting down. kelly moore cited financial struggles in the wake of asbestos lawsuits. people showed up yesterday to the store in oakland surprised to find closed signs already on the door. >> i come down here to grab some paint before you can't. but i didn't expect them to be closed right now. i thought they would be open for a little while until they wind things down. because they have all this inventory. what are they going to do with it? >> right. kelly moore says the union city distribution center will stay open to fulfill its final orders. all other facility, including 60
7:16 am
in the bay area, are closed. in san francisco, the kickoff rally for san francisco's proposition a, otherwise known as the affordable housing measure. it's on the marsh ballot. the mayor and other officials joined the crowd yesterday in chinatown. prop a would authorize the city to issue $300 million in bonds for affordable housing. it also would fund supportive housing for seniors and households earning below the median income. because san francisco has a policy of only issues new bonds as older ones are retired, prop a would not increase property tax rates above 2006 levels. >> this sounds like something easy, but it won't be. it will be really hard. we need 2/3 vote to get this done, to get it over the threshold and to continue the excitement and the momentum that
7:17 am
we all have for getting more housing built. >> again, as just mentioned, property tax rates will not go above 2006 levels. is one of the wives of a 49ers player is scoring with her fashion designs. earlier this week, we told you about how kristin is creating fits for other nfl wives and girlfriends. our anthony flores sat down with her. she said she was working on something special. well now, we think we know what it was. she posted this video on her instagram, turning patrick mahomes and travis kelce jerseys into her trademark puffer jackets. they spotted taylor swift wearing her jacket last night. clearly, it was good luck, because they blew them out and the temperature was about negative 17, so it came in handy. watch that full interview on our

7:19 am
area got a good amount of showers. but san jose, 0.2 of an inch. it's that rain shadow effect we get, so we got some beneficial january rain that will clock in. let's go to the sierra. conditions today will, for the most part, be okay. but we do have for the greater tahoe area, so the back country, this avalanche warning until tonight. better conditions tomorrow and come back down after that three-day weekend. but we want to be careful of that heavy snow on that weak snow pack. as we come back here into the bay area, we'll start to clear things out, seeing a day with filtered sunshine. noontime, mid to upper 50s. a few 60s on the board at the south bay as we see the partly cloudy skies. so a day to dry out but prepare for more rain ahead. we're taking it hour by hour into next week. we see that rain arrive. it could be light amounts as we start our tuesday, but heavier
7:20 am
as we go into the afternoon. it will come down more heavy from the north bay down into the south bay, and it will mainly be an overnight system. as we go into monday morning, things clear out as we go into the middle of the day. but there will be more showers ahead. we're watching this system lining up for friday. so potential plans for next weekend. you do want to keep your eyes on the forecast, because this will bring about more possible flooding concerns, heavy winds and snow for the sierra. so january continues to act like january should where we get rain, snow, and that seven-day forecast remains active. today and tomorrow, better chance to get outside. but we do need to get those umbrellas, rain boots and nice jackets right there, those puffer jackets as the 49ers wives make them, we do need them as we go through the rest of the workweek. >> all right, cinthia, thanks so much. 7:20 right now. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, a rough night for golden state. we have highlights, low lights,

the hoop for two of his game high 28. also helping out was rookie brandon jajenski. training a long three-point shot to give the warriors a temporary lead. but in the end, warriors lose 129-118. from the nba to the nfl and the playoffs. look at the frost on kansas city chief coach andy reid's mustache. the team says it was minus 4 degrees at kickoff. the conditions didn't stop the chiefs leading 19-7 in the fourth. isaac pacheco scores, and the chiefs win 26-7. earlier in the day, the houston texans moved on to the next round beating cleveland 45-14. and it turns out mother nature was the real wild card for the bills/steelers game. the wild card game was supposed
7:25 am
to happen today at high mark stadium in new york, but it's been pushed to tomorrow by this winter storm. not hard to see why. video posted by the bills shows the near whiteout conditions at the stadium last night. yikes! the niners have spending wild card weekend on the couch. hopefully warm watching some football. they earned a first round bye after locking up the top seed in the nfc. but not all of the niners are taking the weekend off. defensive coordinator steve wilkes interviewed for head coaching jobs with the chargers and the falcons. that's according to a report from the nfl network. in his first season with the niners, the defense has allowed the fewest touchdowns this season in the nfl. so don't leave us. on the ice, the sharks north of the border in ottawa. down a goal in the third. this ties the game at 3-3. but it was heartbreak for san jose. the senators score the game
