advisories as the frigid conditions collide. not concerned at all after being here in iowa for the last 20-some years. the blizzard slows us down, but the cold weather won't stop us at all. >> republican hopefuls race across iowa as the first contest of election season officially gets under way today. we are live in des moines with all the excitement. a tragedy at the texas border sparking a new battle this morning over migration between state officials and federal government. and the king of beers goes for the gold. why the olympics is tapping its first ever beer brand sponsor. and a wild, wild card weekend is in the books. the cowboys sent packing while the lions pounce on the rams to win their first playoff game in over 30 years. we will have a full recap of all the action. it's monday, martin luther king day. of the country into a dangerous deep freeze. tens of millions are under windchill and winter weather advisories and there could be as many as 40 record lows in the next three days. today's high temperatures will range from 20 to 45 degrees below zero. nbc's jesse kirsch starts us off. >> reporter: from near whiteouts to record cold, tens of millions of americans are caught in a series of dangerous winter storms that already appear responsible for at least four deaths. all weekend from the west coast to the great lakes, communities getting belted with a wintry mix, some seeing more than 3 feet of snow. in new york, near blinding conditions causing buffalo bills playoff game against the pittsburgh steelers to be postponed. fans helping dig out the stadium. new york governor kathy hochul. >> the storm is not over. it could have been far worse. but it's still not safe

conditions to go out. >> reporter: meanwhile, grand rapids, michigan, hit with snow for the sixth day straight. kim davis deciding to walk roughly 90 minutes round trip to the pharmacy. >> but when you feel that wind -- >> it feels really -- i felt like my jaw was freezing. >> reporter: from the pacific northwest to florida much of the country experiencing temperatures well below average. some windchills making it feel like negative 60. in kansas city, missouri, the chiefs/dolphins game played on in negative 7 degrees, even as the chief's head coach's mustache started to freeze. a saturday storm in maine was blamed for washing away these fishing shacks. across the country, roads turning dangerous, too. in colorado officials say a highway was hit by an avalanche. iowa roads also treacherous on the eve of that state's republican presidential caucuses. >> thanks to ses gee for that report. michelle grossman is tracking that frigid weather, she will

join us in just a minute. for now voters in iowa are being asked to go out in the dangerous weather today. we're hours away from seeing results in the first in the nation caucus. donald trump is dominating in the latest polls but his challengers are still in this hoping for a long-term upset. nbc's alice barr joins us from a frigid iowa. what did we learn from the new polling of iowa caucusgoers. >> reporter: happy to be saying hello from inside in des moines, iowa, hard to say if people are tracking the frigid temperatures or poll numbers more closely. what we have learned from this latest nbc news poll is that former president trump is still polling far ahead, close to 30 points ahead of former u.n. ambassador nikki haley, behind her, florida governor ron desantis and then entrepreneur vivek ramaswamy. a really interesting note was that nikki haley backers are showing in this poll that they are actually nearly half are more likely to vote for

president biden over former president trump if he were the nominee. that's a sharp break from certainly the rest of iowa republicans that we have spoken to and the lead for former president trump is even more commanding among young voters, that points to the enthusiasm that there is for him that he is certainly hoping is going to get people out to caucus in these frigid cold temperatures. >> is there any amount of cold that will keep people from caucusing for trump monday night? >> alaska cold might slow us down but not iowa cold. >> an astronomical probably 80 below. >> 80 below? >> yeah. >> it does not get this cold in california, i know that for a fact. how committed are you to come out tonight if it's negative 30 degrees? >> still committed. >> no matter what? >> yeah. >> what about you? >> same. >> reporter: and despite that what you're hearing, that enthusiasm, there are real questions about how the frigid

it is to not have seen nor heard from their loved ones for 100 days. at the same time on sunday hundreds of thousands of people also took to the streets in major cities across the world, but this time to mainly protest against israel's assault on gaza and to call for a ceasefire. while all of this was going on on sunday hamas released a video of three hostages. now nbc has not been able to verify independently those videos, but they allegedly show the images of -- and they named them -- noe the young woman we saw in a video where she was taken away on the back of a motorbike while her boyfriend was being pushed or marched behind her. now 101 days now after that october 7 attack while the war in gaza continues to rage, but there is also rising tension on the northern border between israel and lebanon.

on sunday an israeli man and his mother were killed after an anti-tank missile shot from lebanon into israel slammed into their homes. hezbollah has claimed responsibility for the attack just as, of course, this cross-border missile and rocket exchange continues -- or has intensified in the last few days raising fears that that part of the region may be spiraling out of control. >> claudio, thank you. three migrants have drowned trying to cross the rio grande river into mexico. the tragedy that sparked a fight between the republican state and the democratic white house. the biden administration accusing texas officials of preventing federal border agents from providing emergency assistance to the victims. guad venegas has more. >> reporter: the drowning of three migrants, a woman and two children, escalating tensions between the white house and the state of texas. the white house says texas officials in eagle pass prevented border patrol agents from providing emergency assistance to the migrants by blocking agents' access to a

city park with a boat ramp. the state had recently taken control of the park. >> i'd like to tell you what's going on here. as you can see there's a gate here at shelby park. if you come down here then they will be denying access. >> reporter: texas governor greg abbott justifying his state's takeover to police the boarder. >> texas has the legal authority to control ingress and egress into any geographic location in the state of texas and that authority is being asserted with regard to that park in eagle pass, texas. >> reporter: the doj responding with a legal filing to the supreme court stating without the boat ramp border patrol has no practical options for responding to migrants who may be in distress. a white house spokesperson telling nbc news governor abbott's political stunts are cruel, inhumane and dangerous adding u.s. border patrol must have access to the border to enforce our laws. this as negotiations in washington over immigration continue. president biden saying on saturday, we have to make major changes at the border, yet the

struggle for power between state and federal authorities remains with u.s. congressman calling the death of the migrants a tragedy while the u.s. park said they had a team searching the river the night of the incident but no migrants were observed. guad venegas, nbc news. leaders in the house and senate from agreed to a short-term spending deal that would postpone any government shutdown until march. that's what three sources familiar with the matter told nbc news. the continuing resolution would need to be passed by midnight friday to avoid a crippling government shutdown. an extended deadline means lawmakers will have time to craft a spending bill. a man in north carolina is in the hospital after crashing a small plane on someone's front lawn. the state highway patrol says the pilot was trying to land when he struck several trees and ended up in the yard. that pilot is a 62-year-old man from south carolina, he had

serious injuries, but no one else was hurt. back to that brutal cold blasting across the country today with millions of people under windchill alerts. nbc meteorologist michelle grossman is tracking down the temperatures could drop and how long they could drop. >> good morning. we're looking at temperatures frigid today. we will see cold temperatures in place over the next several days. at least through friday we are look at 89 million americans under winter alerts or windchill alerts i should say. look portions from the northern plains, the inter mountain test, ohio valley, 92 million people impacted. you can see all the pink, that's windchill advisories, windchill watches and warnings. dangerously cold weather. some spots only takes five minutes to get frostbite. you need to be careful if you head out especially in the northern plains. 35 below zero? duluth and down to parts of texas feeling like minus 5 once you factor in the windchill.
