we'll take you to des moines where freezing cold temperatures are raising some serious questions about voter turnout during the caucuses. also, honoring the life and legacy of the late dr. martin luther king jr. events planned across the bay area. this is "today in the bay." >> here we go, monday morning. 5:00. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. it's time to get a look at that forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that. no rain? >> no rain for today. but we will see it coming back tomorrow. there will be some changes as we go throughout the week. we're starting out with clouds, and in a few areas some patchy fog. then we're also going to see the rain coming back tomorrow as we go into the rest of the week, we will enter into a more stormy pattern, especially for the weekend. as we take a look at our current visibility, we are seeing more dense fog in parts of the north bay.
5:02 am
elsewhere, it is fairly clear as you get ready to head out. when we compare our temperatures to what we're seeing across the country, this has been the big story, the plunge of the arctic air. we are seeing much of the middle of the country below zero starting out this morning. so we'll be tracking that and i'll talk about tomorrow's rain coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you very much. we are following breaking news, a long night for teams in half moon bay combing the waters off moss beach for survivors of a small plane crash. we have a live look at where the crash happened near moss beach distillery. authorities say they saw the plane flying erratic by after 7:00 p.m. and the engine started sputtering. an air rescue crew found some wreckage. authorities say the plane had taken off from an airport in the east bay. our ginger conejero saab is near

the crash site this morning working to gather new details. she'll join us with a live report in our next half hour. more breaking news out of the south bay. san jose police are investigating the first deadly crash of 2024. this happened this morning around 2:00 along skyway drive and monterey road. now, police say that a woman was struck in a collision. she was taken to the hospital, later dying. right now monterey road between skyway and branham lane remains shut down and it's expected to be that way for some time. police are urging commuters to use alternate routes. in iowa the caucuses are being held in the brutal cold today. the weather not stopping the candidates from making that final pitch to voters. >> "today in the bay"'s hallie jackson explains polls show former president trump is maintaining a significant lead. >> good morning to you from chilly iowa. i will tell you, we did come inside for just a second. this is actually one of the
5:04 am
caucus sites here tonight. it looks pretty empty right now, but it will be much busier 12, 13 hours from now when things really start to get going as the 2024 race is finally here. this is it. this is the nominating process, democracy in action today. a couple of things we're watching for, first, our latest polling shows that former president trump has a dominant lead here in iowa, 28 points ahead of the rest of the republican pack. the question is, can he maintain that big of a lead? if he wins by half that, he would essentially make history for a non-incumbent. one of the things we're looking for, if donald trump does win, what is the margin there. if there's much suspense in the race for second place, and we are seeing nikki haley overtaking florida governor ron desantis. the second place position is an interesting one because it is
5:05 am
something that could give momentum to either one of these candidates if the polls hold heading into new hampshire, where nikki haley has put a lot of time and energy, or possibly south carolina. that's where ron desantis is actually headed tomorrow, before then going to new hampshire, which holds its primary next week. haley has tried to frame this race and frame her candidacy saying she's the one who would best win in a general election against president biden. desantis has tried to frame this as he is the candidate best positioned to take on donald trump in the primary process. that is central to both of their closing arguments now here in iowa. then, of course, the third big wild card factor here, the cold. it is always cold in january in iowa. that is no surprise. this is potentially historic cold. like this is extreme, it's extraordinary, it is not normal, so will people say home? there's a question on turnout and how does that affect the state of the race. so those are the three big things we're watching as we get ready for caucus night in iowa.
