ahead, we break down his victory in last night's caucuses and how much closer he is to a possible return to the white house. and we're tracking more rain in the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has the updated timeline. this is "today in the bay." >> good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike, he's got a look at our roadways for this tuesday morning. lots of folks back to work. first, let's start with a look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. >> good morning. we're starting out with clouds and rain not far behind. we're going to see rain coming in today, and you can see all the clouds off the coast there. the rain getting closer to our coastline. we'll see this morning in over the next couple of hours, we'll be tracking with stormranger, our mobile doppler radar. we can see the scan as the rain starts to move into parts of the coastline and north bay. we're going to see the north bay getting light rain into the
5:02 am
morning, as well as the early afternoon, the rest of the bay area will have to wait until this evening before we really start to see rain coming in. and we'll see off and on showers into tonight, getting heavier around 9:00 to 10:00, and then gradually tapering off as we approach sunrise tomorrow. so i'll have more on how much you can expect and what's ahead coming up. mike, you've usually got some road work, we do, as usual. oftentimes it is north 680 and the crew is reported on the grid. you see the closure northbound. over the weekend we didn't have that closure because of the rain. they haven't rescheduled when the southbound side will be closed. but we know there's continuing construction projects through that area. highway 87 shows a little slowing both directions. they had crews overnight. the grid does indicate the crews have cleared from their work. more work that's going on, we talked about this yesterday, there will be crews north and southbound 101 between mountain view and san jose, during the

course of the day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., we're talking about the crews expected to slow things. bob redell is going to give us a report. he's on 101 and we'll talk more about what to expect. roads are clear after a massive tree fell across a busy road in san francisco's golden gate park. there are concerns about more wet weather heading our way. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live at the park this morning. i understand this is a eucalyptus that fell and you were nearby when it happened. >> reporter: that's right, marcus, i was at my daughter's soccer practice, very close by when it all happened just down the street from crossover, where the 135-foot eucalyptus tree fell. the massive tree that fell blocked out at one point both the north and southbound lanes of crossover. it happened around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. the tree fell on top of five cars, which were occupied by 11 people. fortunately, no one was

seriously hurt. this woman was in the blue tesla with her husband, son and daughter. they were not hurt, but shaken up. >> we have a glass rooftop. this big tree and the concrete lamppost comes crashing down, and you hear this big boom, and all our windows cracked. my first reaction was, is there blood, because there was glass everywhere. >> reporter: two people did suffer minor injuries, a spokesperson from san francisco fire says the difference in how all this played out came down to seconds. the vehicles were moving when the tree fell down, and had the tree fallen a second later, it would be a much worse scene. now, the cause of why that 130-tree fell, that's still being investigated. it seems like the rains have just begun, and if you could remember, last year's storms, that led to a lot of downed trees here in the city.
5:05 am
it's hard to tell. be careful if you can be, when it comes to how the trees will react to the rain that we may be expecting. >> so true, ginger. glad everyone was safe in that incident out there. thanks, ginger. the first presidential contest of decision 2024 is officially in the books. former president donald trump beating his political rivals in a huge landslide. if the results are any indication, his competitors have a tough road ahead if they want to be that republican party's nominee. nbc's political reporter, noah pransky, joins us live from new york. let's take a deeper dive on some of these numbers we have here coming out of iowa. trump, the projected winner, with 51% of the vote. former florida governor ron desantis is a distant second with 21%. former u.n. ambassador nikki haley dropped to a third at 19%.
5:06 am
so many analysts really say this is an indication of the stronghold that trump continues to have really on the republican party. he's got that base. is the iowa caucuses, do you think, any indication of what we will see possibly in the primary states of new hampshire and south carolina as well? >> reporter: yeah, i think it's worth pointing out the polls pretty much nailed the turnout and expectations in iowa. as we look forward, new hampshire is a different story. that's in one week. new hampshire is different because independents are able to vote, new hampshire being a more educated, more affluent kind of state than iowa. there are expected a lot of moderate to say come out and possibly lift nikki haley over trump in new hampshire. after that, we pretty much return to the same kind of state, south carolina and nevada, where trump is expected to dominate. if the polls are any indication, there's not really a path forward for any other candidate barring an upset. >> so let's talk a little
5:07 am
strategy here. ron desantis outperformed polls, as you saw. the former president beat him by more than a 2-1 margin there. early polls had haley coming in second place. she eventually finished in third. can they do anything, i would imagine at this point, these other candidates, to try to stop the president's momentum at this point? it's so strong. >> reporter: one could drop out. but i don't think either one of them sees much reason to do that at that point. at this point, it doesn't seem like haley or desantis are running for the vice presidential pick. they're just kind of there hoping that the other one will bail out. if the other one doesn't and donald trump continues to just collect 50% of every set of delegates, by super tuesday this thing will be over. in fact, if nikki haley doesn't win in her home state of south carolina or if ron desantis doesn't pull an upset in south carolina, this whole thing will be over by early march. >> wow. okay, so you talk about vivek ramaswamy dropped out of the race after finishing a distant fourth last night. he made so many headlines
5:08 am
following his performances in several debates. was it a surprise to see him drop out at this point, or are you kind of surprised that he lasted this long, that he stuck in it? >> reporter: he had his own money to kind of support this really hard-working campaign. he put all of his chips in on iowa. he worked harder than any other candidate and made more campaign stops over the last few months. at the end of the day, he positioned himself as the heir apparent to trump. i don't think this is the last we'll hear of vivek ramaswamy. but for this year he'll probably just go ahead and be a trump kind of cheerleader the rest of the way. >> noah pransky, thank you so much for joining us. the "today" show will have even more coverage ahead. nbc news hallie jackson will report live. plus, steve kornacki breaking down the numbers in-depth all coming up on the "today" show

5:19 am
let's get a look at how we stand as far as -- where we stand as far as how much rain we've measured and how much we need to catch up to normal. we are still running some deficits, meaning we've gotten below our normal amount of rainfall to date. santa rosa measuring over 14 inches of rainfall, still lacking over an inch of rain to catch up to normal. you can see what the numbers are looking like with the biggest rainfall deficit in oakland, where we are lacking about 3 1/2 inches of rainfall to catch up to normal. we are going to enter into a much more active storm pattern starting later today, with the rain very close by. our temperatures will be cooler in the north bay as the rain arrives first. we're looking at highs in the low to mid-50s. farther to the south, we're going to see highs up to about 60 degrees today. tomorrow, once the rain clears, it will be a touch warmer with low 60s. it's going to be a nice day. we just have to make it through the rain as we start to see at
5:20 am
11:00 light showers moving into santa rosa, calistoga, approaching napa, and then it starts to really roll in as we head toward the evening commute. by 5:00, we're seeing light rain farther south and it gets heavier for the north bay and continues to work the heavy rain from north to south later on tonight. it will be clearing by this time tomorrow morning, and we're looking at, for most of us, about a quarter inch of rain. could be as much as a half inch of rain for san francisco on northward. but we are going to see a pretty good soaking overnight while the sierra gets light show at about 2 to 6 inches. there will be a lot more rain and sierra snow on the way going into the weekend. in fact, we're watching the potential of bigger storms, possibly two more storms, starting on friday and continuing into monday. it's going to be raining off and on this weekend, so just a heads up, as you're already making weekend plans, that it looks pretty soggy. you may be able to get some activities in during the breaks,

but those breaks may be very small. and we are going to see temperatures continuing to reach into the upper 50s and low 60s. mike, it seems like it's an easy drive across the bay bridge. >> it is great right now. nothing to really impede you out of oakland and the east bay, into san francisco. both directions at speed. whoa, a little blip on the incline. we expect more traffic. we do have one crash over on the shoulder at nave. i don't know how to say that exit. if you're in the area. over here, a smooth drive from the carquinez and benicia bridges. a little fog registering. we'll see that change as the forecast shows the rain coming in. smaller crashes on the shoulders of freeways. no impact toward the lanes and no major injuries for those indicated on the map. we do have a little slowing already showing up san martin toward morgan hill. it does indicate more volume coming into the south bay. back to you.

coast of moss beach. searchers found propellers and parts of a small plane. these were gathered and taken to a storage site for investigators with the national transportation safety administration to examine and analyze. witnesses at moss beach reportedly told investigators that they saw a plane flying erratically before it disappeared into the ocean on sunday evening. the plane is believed to have taken off from the east bay. also found in the water, the body of a woman who is believed to have been on that plane. >> a local fisherman found what they thought in the water was the body of a female. the timeliness and the proximity of where the wreckage was located gives it a good likelihood that this is one of the people that was aboard that aircraft. >> although the search for a second person believed to have been on the plane continued for several hours, it was suspended because the conditions are so dangerous, even in the daylight. officials say it is likely no one would have survived.
5:48 am
before the search was suspended, the search covered 28 square miles. now, the ntsb's preliminary report is likely to take 30 days and a final report could take one to two years before we know what truly happened. >> all right, thank you very much, kris. it is 5:47 right now. developing news this morning, boeing so far not commenting on an announcement that says a crack in the cockpit window of a 737 jet forced pilots to turn the plane around. it happened on saturday in japan. the plane landed normally without losing cabin pressure. the airline says the crack was found only in the outermost layer of the four-layered cockpit window. boeing is laying out new quality control measures in response to the sealed door panel that blew off mid-flight a week and a half ago. that led to terrifying moments for passengers and an emergency

landing. the new measure includes adding more outside independent inspectors on its assembly lines. boeing's 737 max 9 planes remain grounded as the faa continues its investigation. this morning new findings show more parents financially supporting their children well into their adulthood. a new survey finds one-third of parents financially support their children past the age of 18. that could mean anything from continuing to live at home to paying all of their bills. also, more than half of those parents call it stressful financial burden. more than 75% say doing so impacts their own finances and about half say that they actually had to cut back on their own living expenses. 34% have taken on more debt, and 27% had to prolong their retirement date. while it's normal to want to help your children, financial advisers say there are ways to help while avoiding the added stress. >> it's really important to
5:50 am
figure out the right boundaries for how you can support your children without going into debt yourself. so take a look and understand what you can afford to do, clearly communicate that to your children, whether it's a limit, whether it's a timeframe, to be able to really get on the same page and communicate about what you can do. >> there's some simple changes you can do to also help. if your child, adult child still lives with you, you may want to ask them to pitch in more around the house with chores or groceries. but finding a healthy balance is the key there. i always had to do a lot of chores. i was so happy when i left, i didn't have to cut the grass anymore. [ laughter ] >> yeah, doing those chores. all of that is much easier said than done. especially in the bay area, where buying a house is not even attainable. >> trying to send the kids to school. >> also, my dad, we would say, dad, we would like to take you out for dinner, he would say,

let me pay for this one. we would put up a fuss, and he would say, i'm just spending your inheritance. >> hold up. >> enjoy it with him. >> that's right. let's take a look at the forecast. we're talking about rain today. >> yes, and it's going to, for most of us, come in this afternoon. north bay may it earlier. i wanted to give you an update on how we're doing with our rainfall totals for the water year. so we've had a little bit of rain here recently, but still it is not what we usually see. we're still lacking about an inch of rainfall for santa rosa, even though so far we've measured over 14 inches of rainfall. oakland has had 5 inches of rain, but that is 3 1/2 inches below what's normal for this date. so you can see these rainfall deficits that we're running, and the good thing is that we do have some more rain on the way. so i think we're going to make up on those numbers pretty soon here, as we're now starting to
5:52 am
see the rain coming into coastal sonoma county. we're tracking it with mobile doppler radar. that will move into the north bay later this morning. you can see the rain as it approaches and a lot of it south of the golden gate bridge will be drying up. a lot of our coastal areas do typically see the light rain earlier than the rest of the inland areas. as we take it hour-by-hour, at 2:00 we're still seeing the rain in the north bay, maybe at times around san francisco and parts of the peninsula. then it continues to move into the east bay, down to the south bay for the evening commute. where we see yellow, that indicates heavier rain. it will be tapering off as we go toward tomorrow morning. rainfall totals look to be about a quarter to a half inch of rainfall. it could be a little higher for mill valley and some spots like the tri-valley and livermore and santa clara valley, about 0.3 of
5:53 am
an inch of rainfall. wave two comes in on friday, mostly during the afternoon as well. if you're making plans for the weekend, a little something happening on saturday evening. well, we are looking pretty wet at that time. there could be some breaks, and hopefully just in time for the game we'll see a bit of a break. but sunday, monday, possibly tuesday, wednesday, all of those days are looking wet at this point. we're going to see a very active storm pattern ramping up, with a few breaks in between. we're going to enjoy tomorrow, because it looks mostly sunny, highs in the low 60s. and a little bit warmer on thursday. but it will be mostly cloudy because it's going to be a wet weekend, with temperatures in the low 60s. mike, now you're seeing more of a backup out of oakland? >> we are seeing the backup forming as we showed for the last couple of breaks. and now we are about mid parking lot for the backup. one of the issues is i think they might have slowed the metering lights down a little near 9th, the exit into san francisco. there were reports of a disabled
5:54 am
vehicle. it sounds like everything is clear, but we do possibly have a little additional slowing because of those metering lights. so far, the backup not too severe and just a little slowing on the upper eastshore freeway through richmond for west 80. holding steady for the north bay and also the contra costa county drive. i do want to pull you over here. marcus told you about the overturned tanker truck in san rafael. i believe it's northgate drive is the one that's blocked, and you can get around the shopping center and come around. back to you. >> thank you so much. happening now, new data shows a drop in san francisco real estate values last year. the "chronicle" aggregated zillow's home value data and finds that the city saw a 5.5% decrease last year. that's the fourth largest decline among major u.s. cities. oakland real estate declined by about 4%. home values in part in the south

welcome back to "today in the bay." now turning to our climate in crisis, the environmental protection agency estimates that there are approximately 4 million abandoned oil and gas wells in the united states. more than 117,000 of those across 27 states are, quote, unquote, orphaned, which means that they are uncapped, unproductive, and there's no

responsible party identified to manage leakage or pollution risks. these orphaned wells can leak and contaminate groundwater, sometimes leaking methane into the air. methane is the worst greenhouse gas and causes our planet to warm. in california alone, there's currently more than 5,000 orphaned wells, and another 69,000 on the brink of being orphaned in the future. >> so because of these risks, one of the main strategies or what is required by regulation is to plug the wells. but, unfortunately, many abandoned and orphaned wells remain unplugged. because of that, there was the $4.7 billion that was mentioned earlier as part of the bipartisan infrastructure law dedicated to plugging orphaned wells. we just did an analysis and the total plugging costs for the
6:00 am
documented orphaned wells well exceeded the money allocated. so this federal funding is not going to be enough. >> and it's not yet clear if the funding has been cut from governor gavin newsom's recent budget to cap orphaned oil and gas wells. many of them are in southern california, but there are several in and around the bay area. you can see more on this story and how climate change is affecting us on our website, nbcbayarea.com. a quick reminder, nbc bay area is streaming 24/7. you can watch us whenever you would like on roku or other streaming platforms. right now at 6:00, bracing for back-to-back storms. we're tracking when the wet weather returns today and just how long it will stick around, with another system already on its way. somebody was telling me we have a guardian angel watching over all of us today. >> most definitely. terrifying moments atde
