ground. chilled to the bone, one in three americans facing dangerous cold, some people have seen lows colder than antarctica i any relief in sight. cult mystery, six people vanish from a st. louis. and new teen threats, some kids picked up another bad habit they're packing nicotine patches, what those are and explain what parents need to know. we begin this hour with the race to the white house. >> all eyes are on new hampshire after donald trump's historic victory in iowa. here's how it shook out, former president trump won handily with 51% of on the vote. desantis finished a distant second. trump's win by far the largest margin of victory in the iowa

republican caucuses in history. the previous record was bob dole in 1988. >> two other republican candidates have dropped out after a poor performance in iowa. desantis and haley said they still see a path forward to name nation. >> trump was in court for one of those cases against him today. more on that later in the show. >> shaquille brewster starts us off in manchester, new hampshire, let's begin in priscilla thompson, big picture, what does trump's win in iowa what does it say about the state of the race in. >> reporter: kate the top line out of iowa is that donald trump won nearly every voting block, let me tick through the numbers that we saw in the entrance poll, he won 65% of caucus-goers with no college degree, he won

61% of very conservative caucus-goers, 55% of those 65 and older and 53% of the white evangelical vote and that's notable because ted cruz won that group back in 2016, but eight years later, donald trump really dominated and increasing his lead among evangelicals around 20 points here, so it raises the question of how any other candidate is going to build a winning coalition moving into these other early states when donald trump is clearly sweeping all of the key gop voting blocks. kate, zin he, le. >> shaq, you're in new hampshire, that's up next, what are voters telling you about the upcoming primary? >> reporter: well, they say they're ready. they know the candidates are going to be descending here. this evening all the candidates here in new hampshire holding echbltss. one thing i've been talking to

voters about is whether or not those results that you saw out of iowa will impact their decision that they're making here in new hampshire, as so many candidates are relying on this result in new hampshire coming up next week, listen to some of those conversations i've been having. how much do those results play into your decision, that trump won, no bearing. >> nothing. >> why? >> i don't watch that. i make my own decision and who are leaning towards. >> i'm leaning toward nikki haley. >> why nikki haley. >> i think she's the best candidate. >> the group of voters here in new hampshire look much different than the republicans in iowa, fewer conservative voters, fewer evangelical voters and many more independent or undeclared voters who can pick up a ballot for the republican primary that's fertile ground

for nikki haley the question is whether or not she'll be able to capitalize on it. >> shaq, it looks like a postcard where you are for new hampshire. the entrance poll that we took last night, 65% of iowa voters if trump were convicted of a crime he would still be fit to be president, are trump's legal battles a big deal for voters in new hampshire. >> for many voters it's already baked in if you're spotting donald trump and you're saying that in polls you're okay with his legal troubles and for those who are considering other candidates some of them have mentioned, yeah that's one of the reasons why they're considering other candidates or have decided they won't be supporting former president trump, but yesterday i had a conversation with someone who's considering all the candidates including the former president and he said the legal troubles have no factor, he believes it's all political. >> priscilla thompson, shaq

brewster for us, thank you both. thousands miles away from snowy new hampshire the former president is facing a new challenge to remove him from the ballot, this in washington state. argues that the former president is ineligible for office because of his role leading up to the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. steve patterson is on this one for us. today's court hearing lasted a few minutes, what happened and what are the next steps? >> kate, you're being generous. the actual ruling was a few seconds, but to backtrack a little bit, now more than 35 challenges according to section 3 of the 14th amendment across the country of course, you know, maine and colorado have had successful challenges. this one brought by eight concerned citizens. this makes washington different than a lot of the other challenges heard, there's no political machinery or any political affiliation to these

challenges, literally eight concerned citizens, watching the hearing they're sitting around a table wearing sweaters, no attorneys involved, they were representing themselves, to backtrack to today, what the judge essentially said taking one look at the case with everybody gathered in the courtroom which is that this shouldn't be held where it's held. it should be in a nearby county. it's going to happen thursday in the another county. that's the ruling we should hear as this progresses. guys. >> steve patterson, thank you. if you've been feeling bitter cold temperatures lately, you're not alone. >> around 80% of the country hit below freezing today and in the northeast, new york city saw its first significant snowfall in more than 700 day and so exactly how cold are we talking. yesterday denver was colder than

parts of antarctica when it hit negative 16 degrees. the coldest temperature recorded was in wyoming at negative 37 degrees. it's the temperature. and today just about every location east of the rookies is about 10 to 30 degrees below average. michelle grossman is tracking yet another winter blast that's move booing the west, so let's start with nbc's gary gumbach. gary, just like new york, the first snow that d.c. had in nearly two years, how is it going? >> reporter: more than 700 days since d.c. has been able to do this. sledding on the west front of the u.s. capitol. you got kids from d.c. and surrounding areas, guess what, school was closed today with 3.5 inches of snow in the d.c. area, the federal government was closed today. everyone is out here come having a good time whether you're a kid or a parent. >> so overdue, but you know

what, it's well worth the wait. we've been holding on to these sleds for two years, we found them, dug them out. well worth the wait. >> reporter: now, it wasn't all good news here, last night at reagan national airport they saw about 4 inches of snow that led to groundstop and people sitting on planes at reagan national didn't take off for more than three hours. >> the sledding. >> that's a dream. what i love about living in d.c. >> i used to live in that neighborhood. i loved that. >> gary, hope you get to have a ride at some point. let's bring in michelle grossman, we understand another winter storm is already under way. tell us about that. >> yes, not just the east coast getting snow, we're seeing snow along the west coast and not just snow, we're looking at

snow, ice and rain, 60 million people impacted by winter alerts. we'll be measuring that snow in feet over the next several days, this is our next pacific storm, rain and mountain snow developing, today, across the west, icy conditions from washington and oregon and that's making for tricky travel there, by tomorrow and wednesday, we're looking at heavy snow for the northern rockies, measuring that snow in feet. look at these bright colors, the pings, the purples, the heaviest amount of snow. seeing some really heavy rainfall. lower elevation seeing some snow as well. ice is always such a problem to travel on and that's what we're looking at and this is bringing down some trees and power lines. with the really cold air in place. also expecting a whole lot of

destroyed anti-ship missiles that were able to be fired at ships in the red sea including u.s. navy ships, this is the second strike by the u.s. on houthis, rebels in the last three days. courtney kube joins me now, what more do we know about this latest strike and what happened today. >> reporter: there was some back and forth today between the u.s. and the houthis. the u.s. military taking a strike against the houthis in yemen. now u.s. defense officials say they saw that there was the potential for an imminent attack by houthi rebels using a missile, aept-ship cruise missile, so they took what they called defensive action striking that missile site, we also learned today, kate, in fact the houthis are still striking out against commercial shipping hitting a commercial ship today, there was some damage involved but the ship was able to

continue on it was still seaworthy and no reports of any injuries, but at will hoff activity still going on, last week on thursday, the u.s. and the british military foeg struck more than 60 targets inside yemen degrading much of houthi military capability. clearly the houthis continue to try to threaten and target commercial and military ships in the southern red sea. >> seems like they're getting resupplied somehow. incidents in iraq you've been following, tell us about those. >> reporter: we're still trying to figure out exactly what happened, there were multiple missiles fired from iran into northern iraq last night, what we do know that in fact there was some civilians two were killed, civilians including children, no u.s. military or u.s. diplomatic facilities were damaged they're not believed to have been the target of these strikes, but u.s. officials say

they are still looking at the tracks of these missiles fired from iran to try and get a better sense of exactly what they were trying to target here, but again, no u.s. military or diplomatic facilities were impacted by this, no reports of any americans injured but several civilians were killed in this, kate. >> courtney, thanks. there's been a mayor development in the gilgo beach murder case. rex heuermann was charged with a fourth murder today. prosecutors say they didn't have enough ed to present their case until now. valerie castro joins us now with the very latest. walk us through these new charges and how prosecutors were now able to connect this fourth murder. >> this comes down to dna and hairs that were found on or near if bodies of the women when they were covered back in 2010.

investigators said that barnes' body has been restrained and underneath the buckle of one of those belts they recovered a hair. dna links rex heuermann to this case, he's now facing charges of second-degree murder in her case. she was a mother and a sister and her remaining sister spoke out today after that court hearing. here's what she had to say. >> it has been 16 years since the last time i saw my sister, 16 years since i heard her voice, because 16 years ago she was silenced. a wound that never truly heals. >> barnes' daughter also spoke out, just 7 years old when her mother was murdered. >> what's the defense saying about these new charges. >> reporter: so, rex heuermann's defense attorney spoke after court today and said he's

good tuesday, everyone. this is "the fast forward." i'm janelle wang. did you feel it? a 3.4 earthquake struck near watsonville. so far, we are not hearing any reports of injuries or damage. we will let you know if any other information comes in. we will move on to the traffic delays. cal trans is cleaning highway 101. bob redell is along 101 with updates. >> reporter: this morning, it was slowing for drivers heading down southbound 101 through mountainview. this was the scene earlier this morning around 9:15 as we were getting on the southbound 101. you can see a long caravan of sweepers, pickup trucks, chp crawling down 101 in the far

left shoulder and far left lane. cal trans warned that lanes could be closed and traffic slowed down as it continues the road maintenance for the workweek between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. each day. this is in both directions of 101. cal trans is cleaning the road of trash, large octobers, mud and other debris that has collected over time in order to make the road safer for drivers. one driver questioned the timing of doing this during the day when most people are out on the roads. >> cal trans loves to do that. anything in the middle of the day, they are doing it in the middle of traffic. i can't beat it up. it is what it is. they have to get the job done. >> reporter: this is not a road closure of highway 101. only one or go lanes might be blocked along the freeway as the workers make their way up and down 101. as you can see on this map, we

are talng about a 14-me stretch of 101. today through friday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. >> thank you, bob. here are other stories. a gas tanker caused a leak. one of the suspects accused of shooting and killing a police officer denied bail. they charged him with murder. he killed an officer last month when the officer responded to a burglary. cooper appeared in court today. a judge ordered he be held without bail. another suspect is facing burglary charges. our four will attend a plea hearing thursday morning. north bay commuters are in for a delays. a gas tanker overturned.

it was leaking fuel when they got to the scene. cruels controlled and cleaned it up. it will remain closed indefinitely. a truck suspension issue could have caused this crash. no one was hurt. rain is moving into the bay area. here is kari hall with more. >> we can expect it to be a mild day across the bay area with temperatures in the upper 50s for the east bay. low 60s for the south bay and the peninsula up to 59. rain will come in a lot sooner compared to the rest of the bay area. by 4:00 this afternoon, we are seeing widespread light to moderate showers continuing. then we will see it move to the south bay later this evening. it will be clearing by early tomorrow morning. we are looking at the possibility of a half of an inch of rain for most of us. there could be lighter amounts

bottom of the hour now, here are some of the stories making headlines on "nbc news daily". students and staff at the university of nevada, las vegas, are back in school today for the start of the spring semester, for a majority of them this is their first time back on campus since the deadly mass shooting on campus. three faculty members were killed. the shooter was a man who had

been rejected from a job. about a thousand tourists are trapped in a remote village in china, after dozens of avalanche hit china's northwestern region, road access to the village has been cut off for several days efforts to clear the roads has been complicated. some tourists were air lifted to safety over the weekend. take a look at this. a south carolina man is recovering after he took on a coyote that went after his dog. he let chihuahua out behind his home. when a coyote jumped over the fence. the dog is doing just fine. she now wears a coyote-proof collar while out on walks.

former president donald trump was back if new york city court today for the start of his second defamation trial. brought by writer e. jean carroll, the jury for that trial was seated today. >> last year, jury found trump liable of defaming carroll. rehema ellis joins us now from outside the courthouse in new york city. rehema, let's start with you, what's going inside the courtroom right now and can you remind us of how we got here. >> reporter: inside the courtroom, what the judge has done, remember these, no names, we doe know this, four of the nine, one is retired transit track worker, 37-year-old female publicist for a tech company, then there's 56-year-old

german-born woman with two children and a doctor. the judge said you don't litigate this case. what you're looking for is damages. specifically what he said, you can't consider damages as a result of the sexual sought itself, your issue the second issue is to decide whether he must pay her punitive damages. that's their task and the judge seems to be moving along quickly, we expect that e. jean carroll is going to testify, former president trump said he wants to testify. the judge said if he wants to he can testify in this case come monday, they expect it's going wrap up certainly within two weeks' time and this jury will have to make a decision about those damages.

back to you guys. >> danny, the former president has used court appearances to kind of build support politically, right, and it seems to be working according our polling last night, as an attorney how do you handle? >> your clint wanting to be around a lot. the answer normally with a normal client no you can't do that. you're not allow to come in and testify inconsistently with the rules. the plaintiff has a good point, the only thing that trump should be allowed to talk about is a narrow scope of things, he may have nothing to add to the issue whether or not punitive damages are appropriate in this case. it's pretty strong argument, because those issues were already decided. you tell your clint that you can't break the rules of the court. he's allowed to speak last night

at the new york case in this case there's no way a federal judge is going to let that happen. >> all right, danny cevallos and rehema ellis. a disturbing story to tell you about out of st. louis. six people have been missing for month. a mother and her daughter along with four other people were last seen six months ago, police in missouri now say they're following the teachings of a former rapper and a convicted child molester. canny park is following this one for us. this story is quite strange, what have you learned about these six people as well as the alleged cult leader in. >> reporter: this certainly is a troubling story, especially as we dig into the details. we know those six individuals went missing around august 2023. from the st. louis area. some images to share with you. police have released these photos from a store shortly before their disappearance, but

they didn't specify exactly where this was located. the alleged cult leader the individual right now is serving an eight-year prison sentence convicted of child molestation and most recently he gave an interview to st. louis postdispatch and during that interview, via phone conference, he said he operates a spiritual channel via youtube and he shares his opinions and thoughts from a wide range of topics everything from world history, black history, quantum physics because he's sharing his opinions he's not the leader of a cult. >> those individuals some of those images we're seeing are their last sightings. have we have heard anything from the families who are now miss zblrg some of the family members have spoken to our local

affiliate in st. louis, we actually heard from the mother of makayla. her mother is distraught. >> she was probably suffering from postpartum depression. meeting these people online, and they just preyed for her weakness. i know people have many different opinions on this. >> reporter: now, our affiliate also spoke with her neighbor and she was renting that home at the time and apparently there were several people who moved in and that's when things took a bit of a turn, there were times when they noticed these individuals outside meditating without any clothes on, we also heard from another family member who's

welcome back to "the fast forward." i'm janelle wang. we have more information about that plane crash that happened off half moon bay sunday night. sources tell nbc bay area that investigators believe that four people were on board. recovery teams have suspended the search for survivors. here is a look at the crash site. federal investigators are expected to arrive there to figure out what went wrong. they will look at the evidence they have already collected off the coast. evidence includes propellers and parts of the plane engine. witnesses reported seeing a plane flying erratically before disappearing before the ocean. it's believed to have taken off from the east bay. found in the water, the body of a woman believed to have been on the plane. you have to layer up and stay warm. more rain is on the way this week. kari hall has the latest in her seven day forecast.

>> it's going to be a cool day with highs in the upper 50s. we are going to see off and on rain. most of the rain will be coming through during the evening to overnight hours and then clearing out in time for your wednesday. highs head for the low 60s. then we will see a mostly cloudy day on thursday. look at how warm it's going to be with mid 60s. we have time to clean up, make sure we are clearing leaves from the storm drains before we get widespread and heavy rain in the forecast for the weekend. it does continue through saturday. we were watching that forecast closely for the 49ers game on sunday. we are going to see the rain continue. it's going to be cooler for san francisco but also looking at that same stormy pattern as we go into the weekend into early next week.
