reaching into the bay area. once again, one more day of dry conditions. as we take a look at highs for this afternoon, we are headed for 62 degrees in fremont and hayward, and upper 50s for dublin and upper 50s for much of the north bay. we are going to see fog developing this morning, clouds rolling in and once again rain arriving for tomorrow. as we take a look at the temperatures, still pretty mild, even as the rain begins to move in, and we will see highs in the low 60s. definitely a nice boost in the temperatures, but as we are also dealing with warmer temperatures, that could mean more rain for the sierra opposed to snow. we will talk about all the types of precipitation we will see this weekend. mike, you have been tracking an alert on the bay bridge? >> yeah, you can see the low clouds around the area, and we cannot see the span itself. i will show you on the map the slowing i see westbound as you

cross through the treasure island tunnel. there's work going on closing the off-ramp on the eastbound direction. there could be construction that could be the cause. the other issue is the low clouds hovering around here, floating through this area and registering as dense fog throughout the north bay. and then in the far south bay, hollister, watch for that as well. meanwhile the golden gate bridge also seeing slowing and we will check that out. back to you. today in the bay's bob redell is live for us this morning. bob, what are we expecting to happen in court today? >> reporter: marcus and laura, the court appearances in oakland later this morning are listed as plea hearings and it's possible

the suspects could enter please in connection with the charges in killing with the killing of a police officer. laron gilbert appeared in court earlier this week, and the judge ordered him held without bail. two others, mark sanders, 27 years old, and allen brown, 28, were charged. there was a reported burglary, and officer le was shot and killed, and le was the first oakland police officer to die.

>> big loss for that community. thank you, bob. a new break in the case of a shooting that killed a retired police officer, kevin nishita, who died while protecting a bay area television news crew. this man has now been arrested after more than two years on the run. u.s. marshals arrested laron gilbert near kansas city. gilbert will first have to be extradited before he can be formerly charged. opponents of embattled east bay district attorney, price, will gather in burgly. there are concerns about a recent spike in crime. they are promising to hold a news conference. the recall efforts started last year in response to price's

leniency on crime, including dropping enhancement charges. in a town hall last month she described her goal to, quote, hold people accountable because destroying the community. a huge loss for the warriors family after a team coach suffered a medical emergency. at just 46 years old he suffered a heart attack in utah where the team was set to take on the utah jazz last night. that game was postponed.

looking at the weather. >> it's 50 degrees in san francisco, and it's 40 to start out in dublin. we are seeing temperatures ranging mostly from the low 40s to up to 50 degrees, but it's a fairly mild start. we are also seeing very low visibility in parts of the north bay. novato down to zero visibility. watch out for that fog, and allow extra time to get to where you are going this morning. throughout the day, novato and the north bay, temperatures will be in the mid-40s and only makes it into the low and mid-50s for the rest of the morning. we will stay cloudy with highs reaching into the low 60s. we will talk about the arrival of the next storm for tomorrow in a few minutes. mike has a look at lower gas prices around the bay area. >> yeah, i saw a couple prices lower this morning than yesterday. we will check vallejo. yesterday was royal gas and today it's central gas at 3.57.

and that will be the case throughout the day. the bigger storm system we are expecting moving in for tomorrow still well off the coast. as we check in before all of the rain on our reservoirs and see how they are doing, and we are still seeing them running fairly low for the lexington reservoir, it's at 42% capacity. marin water still at 95% capacity. here's what we are watching with rain moving in from friday through monday, there's a potential it could happen with subtropical moisture, and that means we will get higher rainfall totals if that moisture is coming all the way from hawaii. we are looking at an inch and a half to seven inches possible. also prepare for the potential of gusty winds and issues with

the power going off and on, as well as rivers and street flooding during the times of heavy rain. so we are going to start seeing it move in tomorrow afternoon. saturday morning, heavy rain in parts of the north bay. we are watching that closely for saturday evening, for the 49ers game. it shows rain in and around the area, so have rain gear just in case. there will be breaks here and there, but we will continue to see it picking up on sunday evening into monday morning. as of right now, this is the forecast for the game on saturday at 5:15. it should be about 57 degrees and some off and on showers. we are in such an active weather pattern the breaks in between the rain is not going to be that long. we are going to continue to see the storm track right over us, and that's going to enhance the sierra snow. we are looking at over the next several days, we will say just

the next week, we can see anywhere from 10 to 30 inches of snow possible for the sierra, even though these are warmer storms. looking at the 7-day forecast, scattered showers moving in for tomorrow, mainly during the afternoon. more rain in the forecast saturday, sunday into monday. there could be a brief break on tuesday, but then we see the potential of more showers next wednesday. we will be tracking all that for you. mike, you were saying there was an early backup at the bay bridge? >> yeah, this is the alert we are talking about for the bay bridge. folks traveling out of oakland, and there's less of a backup, but there are low clouds and fog, and that could be the issue. the metering lights are active as of 5:00 this morning, but here in the treasure island and buena island tunnel, traffic is

thursday. i am marcus washington. i am laura garcia. we will get to the top stories for you in just a minute, but first excitement is building for niners fans. the faithful counting down to saturday's game against the packers. there's already history being made. how they are trying to tackle it head on. and then let's head over to kari. no rain today but it's coming. >> it's coming tomorrow afternoon and looks like we will get waves of it over the next several days. we are going to have a mostly cloudy day, and we have sprinkles to the north and low visibility, and a dense fog advisory continues until 11:00 in the north bay valleys where some spots of visibility is down to quarter of a mile. you could see visibility lower than that in some spots as you

head out. upper 50s for the interior eastbound as well as the north bay. san francisco up to 59 degrees. i will have that timeline of the rain coming up. mike, you have a warning for commuters about the early backup out of oakland? the metering lights were concerned on about 5:00 this morning, not just because of the fog but because as you look at the span, the slowing again at the treasure island area. the first was an overnight alert by a couple lanes blocked there and then slowing across the span, and then we heard about a crash in that same area. you see more slowing that will slow folks down. highway 37, novato, san rafael coming down 101, and also in the south bay we have slowing, and they finally cleared the last crew. it's back up to the speed limit as you travel counter commute.

sobering numbers this morning from the impact of the substance abuse crisis. ginger conejero saab joins us. the number of deadly overdoses there has never been higher. it's tragic. >> reporter: that is correct. that's exactly what city officials are calling it, laura. 806 overdose deaths that was reported in san francisco in 2023. as you mentioned, city officials and community leaders and everybody in that space calling it tragic. the director of san francisco's public health is calling on help and support from lawmakers to fund and supervise consumption drug sites, to increase access to methadone and boost investments in the behavioral health workforce. >> we worked hard in 2023 to

save lives, and we will continue to do so in 2024. we will continue to break down barriers to treatment, because treatment works. we will maintain our strong focus on increasing treatment options and making them more accessible. >> reporter: dr. grant colfax also saying despite those numbers, his team remains cautiously optimistic in their work. after seeing a decrease in overdose deaths last month, the city recording 52 deaths, which is down from december of 2022, and the city health leaders say more than 20% of overdose deaths involved fentanyl. another drug is making the rounds and is recognized for its

more potent high. mayor london breed will address substance abuse later this morning in a roundtable discussion. she will be highlighting prop f, and it's a ballot measure that will affect those enrolled in the city's general assistance program. in order to be eligible for assistance, that can be up to $687 per month, and those suspected of substance abuse will have to undergo drug screening, and that will be the focus of discussion at the roundtable that is scheduled at 11:00 this morning that will happen with london breed and other community leaders. >> something has to be done. it's a really bad problem we all face. ginger, thank you so much. only on nbc bay area, a mother speaking out after an incident caught on camera.

a man violently confronted her son at dollar tree, and the video shows a man fighting with the teenager and grabbing him by the neck before wrestling him to the ground. police are investigating and looking for the man in the video. he was confronted by a group of middle school teenagers, and he tried to choke at least one of them before leaving the scene. the boy's mother is hoping the police can find him. >> i want to hear his story, of course. no matter what, don't put your hand on nobody's child. >> two of the teenagers who is not revealing their identities, they said the man was following them in the store and the man became aggressive when they asked him why. police are gathering more crews. the warriors family grieving after the death of a assistant

trouble hearing you, kris, your microphone. dejan milojevic suffered a heart attack at a team dinner in utah. he joined the warriors in 2021. head coach, steve kerr, said in a statement that he was one of the most beautiful human beings i have ever known. somebody that brought joy and light to every single day with his joy and passion and energy. nobody, of course, will feel the loss as much as his wife and children. the nba has not said when the warriors will return to play. we will continue to follow this. such a loss for that team. it's 5:36 right now. now to a live look at pier 47 in san francisco. today is a day commercial crabbers have been looking forward to. state and wildlife officials

gave the green light earlier this month for boats to start harvesting from the county line to the u.s./mexico border. boats will have to agree to a 50% trap reduction. crab season have already gotten under way in the waters north of the bay area. >> i had some this past weekend. >> had some? >> yeah, this past weekend. >> you can put a little more on your plate. going to be a busy time in the bay area, especially in santa clara, kari. >> yes, we are watching that forecast very closely for the 49ers game. we are looking at temperatures in the upper 50s, but whether or not it's going to rain is the big question. it looks like a lot of that rain falls throughout the morning, but there will be a chance at game time and throughout the evening with spotty showers. you do want to make sure you are planning to have a poncho in

your wardrobe. looking at other events going on, napa will have their lighted art festival kicking off saturday into sunday. a nice event to enjoy in the evening, but make sure you have the umbrella there. if your weekend plans take you to tahoe, this next weekend will be a lot warmer so we will initially see rain coming down, and then at night it could transition to snow. some of the snow levels may still be at 7,000 feet. we will see off and on rain in the forecast on sunday as well. we will watch all this and talk about our weekend rain. mike, you have info for a crash on the bay bridge? >> yeah, and we are talking about wet roads up towards tahoe and the freezing temperatures can be tough conditions, so watch those updates online as well as on the air. we had a backup here with maintenance crews blocking

lanes. there was a crash near treasure island, so only one lane blocked but that's enough to cause more slowing westbound, and slowing of the metering lights turned on early and maintained their status as alternating lights through the lanes. the north bay, dense fog will be a factor for folks. it creeps around the bay. half moon bay often a suspect for fog as well, and right now we are talking about the continued work. traffic control will be going on here on 92. there's a small -- about a dozen eucalyptus trees being removed, a bigger project for the rest of the week there. this is being cleaned up, 101, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. today, those outer lanes may be impacted. >> good reminder. thanks, mike. answering questions on a politically divisive issue, the war in the middle east. ahead on "today in the bay," five candidates provide their

good thursday morning. let's take a live look outside in walnut creek. we are mostly cloudy this morning but we are seeing visibility in some spots due to fog. as we go throughout the day the clouds hang around. we will see temperatures in the

>> johnson talks a tough talk. he says he wants more. he has to get the plan to save the government from shutting down overnight passed a bunch of tough critics in his own party, or ask democrats to help him out. 39 members of congress on both sides have announced they are leaving. laura mentioned democrat, anna eshoo, and duncan from south carolina said he would not run for re-election. nearly 1 out of every 10 members of the house announced they are not re-running. nikki haley needs a win against donald trump, and some pundits say she needs to act more like she wants to beat him. headlines like this one in this morning's "washington post,"

nbc's jonathan allen pointing out haley's new hampshire campaign schedule is, quote, light. trump, in the meantime having no hard time attacking nikki haley. haley was born in south carolina. she's an american citizen because she was born in south carolina. the judge in the second e. jean carroll lawsuit against trump threatened to throw trump out of the courtroom in new york because trump that was interrupting from the defense table. trump had the usual criticism for judges. >> that's a nasty man. he's a nasty judge. he's a trump-hating guy, and it's obvious to everybody in the courtroom. >> a previous jury found trump culpable, and they are now there to see if trump should pay more.

a german shepherd mix is on the recovery. marley was shot through her snout last week. neighbors her gunfire and sounds of yelping, and then found marley. field officers with the san joée animal care and services got to work. one day later she was back up and walking. >> she's a great dog. she's very calm and really -- really adapting well given the circumstances, you know. we are really happy to see her up and about. >> marley is now getting treatment at uc davis, as the shooting is making things difficult for her to eat. once completed, they are hoping she will be eligible for adoption. san josé police say they are

still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. anybody with information should call investigators. and even before the niners take to the field before the playoff game, they are making history. the tenth all-time meeting between the two teams, and their third post season meeting over the past four seasons. the niners won the last four playoff match-ups, and given the history of the rivalry, anything can happen. >> that rivalry of san francisco and green bay is always a big one. >> we're not skiers. >> despite being the lowest seed, they dominated dallas. >> that's all you need. >> can't wait! >> and he also said, what!

show you what is going on in the pacific, and the rain is heading to the pacific northwest. the drought monitor gets updated every thursday. we have not seen any changes over the past few weeks. still most of california is drought free, but there are still dry areas across the desert southwest. we will be watching that as potentially more storms start to come in. here are the areas we are watching as we are expecting rain. for napa and sonoma county, we may have moderate to heavy rainfall at times. it picks up on sunday. at that time you want to make sure you are keeping an eye on rivers, creeks and streams. the area to watch, green valley, santa rosa as well as the san tprau mosquito creek. those are the areas that may be rising as we get a lot more rain coming in. the first wave on friday afternoon will not cause any major issues, but as we look at

the storms into the weekend and early next week, we will have to watch out for the potential of flooding. as far as how much we could see, models are in some spots here going off the charts. we see the areas in yellow for the coastal north bay. that's several inches of rainfall, highly significant amounts of rainfall for the upper elevations and along the coast. most of us seeing two to three inches of rainfall, which is also pretty significant. we have several days of rain in the forecast after today. there may be a brief break on tuesday with another system coming in on wednesday. this active storm pattern continues throughout the weekend with temperatures staying mild in the upper 50s and low 60s. mike, you have been tracking a different pattern for some commuters. yeah, for some commuters, kari. the south bay is where the slowing starts, and it's easing up from the first burst. it will kick in again at 6:40.

contra costa looking all right. the bay bridge and the golden gate bridge have exceptional issues going on. there was construction across the bay bridge this morning. the metering lights were turned on about 5:30, earlier than normal. the fog will impact you along the 101 in the north bay. petaluma police are reminding people about the risk of drinking and driving. there was a crash last night. one person suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. officers arrested one of the drivers after a blood alcohol test. police say they are committed to reducing the number of alcohol-related crashes. aiming for a zero waste future. still ahead, how one bay area city is getting residents to rethink their energy use. at 6:00, a brewing pickleball controversy in san

welcome back. turning now to our climate in crisis. listen up if you live in the south bay. the city of san josé wants your input to plan for a zero waste future. city officials want to rethink energy, water and land use by engaging everyone from residents to businesses and government agencies. it's called the zero waste element draft. it's available online right now. can you click anywhere on the document. you can tell the city leaders what you think about it, anything you should change or who else the city should connect with. the major goal of the city is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that warm the planet by 244,000
