nation, blind-sided by the death of a beloved assistance coach. the details of his final hours. you will have wires come down, and the roads get blocked, and can't get from point a to point b. >> bracing for back-to-back storms. as the bay area is drying out, rain is making its way here. this is "today in the bay" good thursday morning. thanks for allowing us to start the morning with you. i am marcus washington. i am laura garcia. we will get to the morning commute with mike in a little bit, but first this morning we are talking about the forecast. a nice clear day today? >> yeah, it's going to be dry today. although we would probably like more sunshine but we will see a lot of clouds hanging overhead. we are starting out with fog. you can see the low visibility as we look at the san francisco golden gate bridge bridge

camera, and also clear in oakland and san josé. temperatures starting out in the 40s. we do have very low visibility in parts of the north bay. novato checking in with zero visibility, so be careful driving on the stretch of 101, or anywhere around the north bay where we are seeing the fog develop. in berkeley, we will have temperatures in the upper 40s, and we are headed for the upper 50s and could see peeks of sunshine, but we will have filtered sunshine with highs reach into the low 60s. we will talk about the rain, coming up. mike, you are saying bay bridge commuters may need to leave early? >> yeah, there was an early backup here at the bay bridge. the good news is over the last 20 minutes and half hour, i have been seeing steady improvement and now i see good movement. the metering lights were activated at 5:00 a.m. there were earlier problems, overnight construction, and that

will be the case as well coming up overnight tonight as well there. to the north, theres's dense fog and that will be another factor as folks travel along 37, the 101 and the golden gate bridge as well. outside the earlier backup on the bay bridge, everything looks good. back to you. >> thank you. now four suspect appear before a judge. >> reporter: the court appearances later this morning in a courtroom in oakland are listed as plea hearings, so it's quite possible the suspects charged in the shooting and killing of oakland police officer le could be entering pleas later this morning. last week prosecutors charged a fourth person in connection with the crime, marquee cooper, and he's 34 years old and faces a

charge of murder. he was held without bail. two other suspects are being held in connection with the murder. a fourth man, russell, he's being charged with second degree burglary. back in december, last month, police responded to a reported burglary at a cannabis business, and officer le was in plain clothes and driving an unmarked police truck when he was shot in the head. he was remembered at a public memorial last wednesday. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a big loss for that community. thank you very much, bob. in a new break in the case of a shooting that killed a retired police officer, kevin nishita, who died while protecting a bay area television news crew. authorities say a third suspect,

this man, has now been arrested after more than two years on the run. u.s. marshals yesterday arrested laron gilbert near kansas city. kevin nishita died in 2021. two suspects were arrested and each plead not guilty to murder, and gilbert has to be extradited before he can be charged. and then two u.s. senior defense officials are calling one move a defensive and pre-emptive measures. the strike took out multiple houthi missiles. the move comes after a u.s.-owned cargo ship was hit by an attack drone by the rebels yesterday. the u.s. has designated the ruthies as a terrorists

organization. dr. jill biden spent 24 hours in the bay area, and then arrived in burbank last night. she's continuing her west coast tour, and the campaign raised $100 million in the last three months. and then a popular coach suffered a medical emergency during the team meeting, dejan milojevic, at just 46 years old he suffered a heart attack in utah where the team was set to take on the utah jazz last night. the game was postponed. >> dejan, everybody called him

decky. that was his nickname. he is one of the brightest lights i ever want to cross in my career. >> warriors coach, steve kerr, said in a statement, coat, this is a shocking and tragic blow with everybody associated with the warriors and an incredible difficult time for his family, friends and all of us who had the pleasure to work with him. dejan milojevic joined the team in 2021, and he leaves behind a wife and two children. the warriors arrived home last night, and at this point their next game is still on the schedule for tomorrow at the chase center against dallas. getting ready for another round of rain tomorrow, and the unhoused group is getting supplies ready. there's not nearly enough shelters to accommodate them. the santa clara water district is making sure the sandbag supply is well stocked. it's staying on top of the residential onslaught as much as

possible, and communities are preparing early and bracing for the worst. >> you have the wind, the rain, the amount of rain we get up here, so you have first and foremost, the issues that happen with even trying to travel in and out of our valley here, you will have trees come down. you will have wires come down. the roads get blocked. you can't get from point a to point b. >> the emergency center ran out of sandbags yesterday but says it will have more by tomorrow. i want to bring in meteorologist, kari hall. the big question is when will we see the storm hit? >> early sunday into next week, and as we initially see the rain coming in tomorrow, we may see the issues as we are dealing with the rain. the national weather service puts out their outlook, and they are highlighting areas that we are watching, mainly in the north bay.

napa and sonoma county could see heavy rain at times on sunday. pretty much watching our rivers, creeks and streams. we have not had any big storms here lately and the water levels are still low, but they could reach the monitor stage. we're looking at this system that is going to be approaching, once again, moving in tomorrow afternoon. there's more developing behind that. we get this compounded affect where we see several days of storms and then we start to see the flooding issues. initially, once again, we are not expecting any major issues with flooding up until sunday when we do see the heavier rain moving in, shown by the darker shades of green, and we will have had 24 hours of rain that has been falling. we will continue to monitor all of the river and creek levels as well as the low-lying areas that typically flood with heavy rain. we will have another look at the forecast in a few minutes.

i wanted to head over to mike with a look at lower gas prices. yeah, lower still because i saw a couple stations that i pass where prices came down overnight. 3.57, the shop on springs road is what i am talking about, the top. and then 3.65, in concord. los gatos, lowest price is 3.69 at mobile on los gatos boulevard. on the roadways, a smooth flow of traffic. we have additional slowing at the bay bridge toll plaza. early backups and overnight work slowed things down across the westbound span. everything else looks standard. vasco still under half an hour but is starting to build for

good thursday morning. let's get a look at our day planner for livermore, starting out with peeks of sunshine and temperatures in the low 40s. that may be the clearest part of the day. a lot of clouds moving in for the afternoon. we're looking at temperatures headed for the upper 50s here. we do have dry weather today with rain arriving tomorrow, so i will look at that timeline in just a few minutes. right on time on the timeline. the san mateo bridge picks up volume westbound on 92. a little brake tapping. fog on the bridges to the north. good morning.

very happy thursday to you. markets are in their third straight day of losses as bond yields rise. all the good news about december store sales make investors think the economy is too strong for rate cuts right now. sandberg became a household name as chief operating officer at facebook and wrote a book called "lean in," and she stepped down from the day-to-day operating role in 2022. the ceo of google says more layoffs are coming. google announced about 12,000 layoffs last year and has been cutting more here and there. google putting more concentration on new priorities like ai, and he wrote a memo to google employees which he said cuts are needed, but he was not that direct. the memo was full of statements

like making tough choices, and simplifying execution, and resource allocation decisions, and those are job cuts in ceo language. and then japan airlines has a new ceo -- yeah, let's show the man first, and then let's go over to her. she started as a flight attendant, and then went to safety. apple puts its first vision pro head set, and netflix is not making an app for it, and that's notable. we will release a new episode of our podcast "sandhill road" this morning. i asked laura, did you think as a child, you know, i would like to follow in my mom's footsteps.

courts. tennis courts were converted into the pickleball courts, and neighbors think the noise is a problem. the city says it's going to convert a few of the courts back to tennis courts. today pickleball players are planning to voice their concerns at a meeting with the recreation and park commission. players say they are also planning to protest tomorrow, and this is if the city continues with its plan to replace the pickleball courts. >> stay out of the kitchen. and then everything fall into place when it comes to the super bowl and half-time entertainment. country singer, reba mcentire, will sing the national anthem. pop star post malone will perform "america the beautiful," and then andra day will sing "left every voice and sing."

thank you. that's kind of how it is. >> okay. >> she knew what i was saying. >> yeah. >> advanced communication. >> you knew it -- >> yep. well, i wanted to give you an update on that arctic plunge that has been hitting much of the rest of the country. that cold is loosening its grip a little bit, so it's not as cold this morning. how about the teens, 20s, and single digits further to the north. we are starting out our morning with temperatures in the low to mid-40s. i don't want to hear anybody say it's cold out there. it's 40 in dublin. it's 44 in fremont, and 44 in napa. we have also been watching out for dense fog, low visibility in parts of the north bay. in novato it's down to zero. there's a dense fog advisory in effect. allow extra time to get to work this morning. slow down as you hit those fog banks.

we're looking at clouds reaching into the bay area. it's going to be a mostly cloudy day, filtered sunshine. it does stay dry up until tomorrow when the rain will be coming in, as the center of the storm system gets a lot closer. there's a couple of them developing out there. the first wave of rain comes in late tomorrow afternoon into the evening, and it just continues off and on. looks like it gets heavier on saturday morning for the north bay, but still spotty showers in and around the bay area through saturday evening. we have been watching the forecast closely, and it doesn't look like it tapers off for quite a while. there will be some breaks here, but it picks up and gets heavier for sunday into monday. we will see a brief break. looking at how much rain we could see here, it's really lit up here as we see the potential in parts of the north bay, that bright pink, even the light pink, that's three to possibly up to five inches of rainfall. where we see the red, that's about one to two inches of rain.

that's what most of us will see in the east bay, the peninsula into the south bay. a lot of concerns there with heavy rainfall and days of rain that will be coming in waves off and on. the 7-day forecast, look for temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s. it does say mild. we will not see a shift temperature wise, but there will be times of rain coming in and it looks soggy with the exception of tuesday with another system coming in behind that. a lot to watch here over the next few days. mike, you have been watching the morning commute. any issues slowing people down? >> the commute itself right now, kari. the timing on the richmond san rafael bridge, the limited visibility in novato all the way over towards napa will have the toughest view, but the sun will come up and things will change as far as conditions. slowing at the richmond bridge

6:25 you this morning. get ready for loads of laughs in san francisco. >> tonight a founding member of monte python will kick off the sf sketch fest. the organizers say it will be one of the biggest comedy festival in north america. other acts include the weird al. three friends founded sketchfest, and they never believed it would morph into what it is today. more than 600 artists taking part in more than 200 shows, and it's spread out across 17

the unexpected death of a young assistant coach. the new details emerging about his final hours and the team's initial response. the crab season opens for business. we will take you live to the pier where crews will soon be selling this year's first catch. this is "today in the bay." ♪ ♪ good thursday morning to you. 6:30 right now. thanks for starting your morning with us. i am laura garcia. i am marcus washington. time to get a look at the forecast. meteorologist, kari hall, has been monitoring that. you say it's going to be nice and clear, at least clear from the rain today. >> yeah, we are not going to see as much sunshine as we would like, but we will have dry conditions today. we started out with fence fog in parts of the north bay, so watch out for the low visibility. tomorrow, we will see the next storm come in, and for the weekend we will see heavier rain coming in. the issues with flooding are

possible along with gusty winds. as far as temperatures, we are headed for the low to mid-60s today. upper 50s for the inland tri-valley as well as the east bay. for the north bay, we will see highs reaching up to close to 60 degrees. as we track that rain tomorrow, the afternoon is when it will start to ramp up. it will be off and on throughout the weekend. we will look at that timeline coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. sobering new numbers coming in this morning on the drug overdoses crisis, and ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco this morning. ginger, whether you live or visit san francisco, you have likely seen the affects from the issue, and the number of deadly overdoses has never been higher. >> reporter: that's right. it's very sad to hear that more people have died from overdoses in san francisco than ever before, marcus.

806 overdose deaths were recorded in the city last year. city officials are calling it tragic. the director of san francisco's public health said they also districted 125,000 doses. >> we worked hard in 2023 to save lives, and we will continue to do so in 2024. we will continue to break down barriers to treatment, because treatment works. we will maintain our strong focus on increasing treatment options and making them more accessible. >> reporter: sfdph is asking for support in their work and calling on lawmakers to increase access to methadone and boost investments in the behavioral workforce. the city saw a decrease in overdose deaths in the month of

december last year. the city recorded 52 deaths, which is down from december of 2022, the year before, which had 75 deaths. still, dr. colfax said this is nothing to tout about in a year of record deaths. the city's health leaders say those deaths involved fentanyl, and saeu low sean was also a contributor to the overdose deaths. this drug is being recognized for its more potent high. mayor london breed will have a roundtable discussion that will highlight prop f, and that will be about the general assistance program. to be eligible for assistance, which is $687 per month, individuals suspected of substance use would also need to undergo a drug screening.

marcus, you mentioned whether or not you are in the city or other places in the country, you hear the affects of the overdose deaths. every four minutes in the u.s., somebody dies of a overdose. this is not a local problem but also a national crisis. hopefully this is one step closer to solving the overdose problem, and it will start with a roundtable discussion with mayor london breed. >> whether you know the person or not, it affects all of us in some type of way. thank you for that. happening today, opponents of east bay district attorney, pamela price will gather. restaurant owners in the surrounding area are raising concerns about a recent spike in crime. the recall effort started last year in response to price's perceived leniency on crime, including her dropping special enhancement charges in several

high profile cases. she said she was elected on a platform of criminal justice reform. she described her goal to hold people accountable without destroying the community and without decimating black and brown families because of the racism that has infected the criminal justice system. in a matter of hours, the report is set to be released from the uvalde school. it could include lessons learned about mass shooting responses and how to improve in the future. new at 6:00, medical examiners are confirming a former bay area olympian and coach died of an accidental

drowning. he died while surfing in santa cruz. he was a beloved swim coach, and he was just 65 years old. the warriors family grieving from the unexpected blow, the death of a beloved assistance coach. >> the staff and team too heartbroken to compete. kris sanchez, they were there when they had the heart attack. >> yeah, it happened at a team dinner. the team is mourning the loss of dejan milojevic. he's being remembered for his warmth and humor on and off the court, both as a coach and when he was a player as well. >> he was a force, and he played with passion, but he is so sweet and gentle and so intelligent and approachable.

>> if you spend three minutes with dejan at any time, you walk away thinking, i like that guy. >> he suffered a heart attack at a team dinner on tuesday and died a day later. he was just 46 years old. decky, as he was known by the team, joined the warriors in 2021 after a 14-year playing career nationally, he was also a head coach in serbia. steve kerr said in addition to being a terrific basketball coach, dejan was one of the most positive and beautiful human beings i have ever known, somebody that brought joy and light to every single day. this was a moment of silence ahead of the mavericks game last night. dejan milojevic is being

to migratory whales. they have to agree to a 50% trap reduction. the crab season has already gotten underway north of the bay area. we are going to have some rain, dealing with that off and on in the next couple of days. levi's stadium, the game, it will be in the upper 50s. in napa this weekend, there will be the beginning of the lighted art festival starting on saturday. that will continue for the next several weeks in the evening. napa will be all lit up, but maybe it could be heart to see because of the rain coming down. we will see temperatures in the 50s throughout the weekend. if you are going to tahoe, heads up there will be a lot of rain and then it will change over to snow as you go above 7,000 feet.

some of the upper elevations seeing snow as the temperatures throughout the weekend will be fairly warm and marginal for the rain/snow. mike, you spotted something that was stopped on the san mateo bridge? >> yeah, right behind me, and i put an area so folks notice. this is a vehicle that took time to get to the shoulder. there was a lot of brake lights happening, and further down on the flat section, i saw more flashing lights on the right side of westbound 92. there could be two issues folks are trying to navigate past on the san mateo bridge. it does look better. the speed sensors recovered quite a bit over the last several minutes, and that's good news traveling across the peninsula. there's the build for the nimitz, and the dumbarton bridge also available if you are looking for options. slowing here, right on top, 6:30 is when they said the work will start and 3:30 in the afternoon is when it will end.

ask democrats to help him out. the republicans barely have a majority, and people keep quitting. 39 members of congress on both sides have announced they are leaving. republican, jeff duncan from south carolina announced wednesday he won't run for re-election. nearly one out of every ten members of the house announced they are not returning, and some like mccarthy just quit early. nikki haley is in second place in the polls ahead of the new hampshire primary. some pundits say she needs to act like she wants to beat donald trump, take him on more directly. that has been a criticism against her for a while. nbc's jonathan allen pointing out, nikki haley's new campaign schedule is kind of light. and then trump is attacking

this is our time to get things prepped around the house and get ready for the rain. this is a view from dublin as the sun comes up underneath the clouds. we will see the clouds linger throughout the day, so not a lot of sunshine. we had low visibility in parts of the north bay, and we are seeing zero visibility under the dense fog. watch out for those patches of dense fog in the north bay. elsewhere, once again, we are seeing the clouds stretching in. we are seeing light showers further to the north, although for most of us we are going to stay dry today. tomorrow is when we start to see the bulk of the storm system arriving, and it will be off and on throughout the weekend. before we get the big rainfall, we want to check in on the reservoirs that are pretty low for the south bay reservoirs. lexington reservoir, not even halfway at capacity. it's a lot higher for marin and east bay mudd, but we will most likely continue to see the water

levels going up. there's a chance we could see a atmospheric river, and that enhances the rainfall, and so there could be a potential of an inch and a half to seven inches of rainfall. when we get all of the rain coming down with the gusty winds, there could be issues with power. make sure you are prepared for that in advance. we could also see rivers and streets flooding as well. the timeline of the rain starts to arrive during the afternoon into the evening, and it's once again, off and on throughout the day on saturday, and that does show the potential of rain for saturday evening. we could see a lot more rain on the way. the areas of pink and red indicate four to five inches of rainfall. the highest rainfall totals would be in the north bay. there looks to be a brief break on tuesday with more rain on wednesday. it's going to get active here with times of soggy weather. enjoy today while it's still dry. mike, you have been watching
