snow. really cold temps. hey, em, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the windchill here is a bone-chilling 7 degrees, powering a relentless lake-effect snow machine here. you can see the area right here has recently been plowed, but when i walk over here, you can get a sense of how deep the snow is. this is an area that has seen snow for the past 14 days in a row. so much snow, it's not just a matter of pushing the snow to the side. they have trucks coming in, picking up the snow, and relocating it as brutal weather winter conditions continue bearing down on conditions across the country. >> this morning, another powerful and dangerous winter storm is on the mover. bitter cold from coast to coast. 66 million people are under winter weather alerts. those brutal conditions impacting air travel nationwide, with more than 5,000 flight delays and 1,100 cancellations wednesday. >> every hour, they would just

say, oh, delay, delay, delay. >> reporter: state police say five family members were struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on a snowy pennsylvania interstate after they left their vehicles following a separate crash. in hard-hit buffalo, even more lake-effect snow is expected on top of the three plus feet that has buried the city in recent days. driving conditions overnight treacherous. with authorities warning, clearing this amount of snow can be dangerous. >> if you have a heart condition, you should avoid snow shoveling and even snow blowing. >> reporter: in the west, the weather closing roads and sending drivers sliding. and with more than half of the country now covered in snow for the first time this winter, in illinois, windchills dipped as low as as 40 below. tow truck drivers like david wearing special gear to work in freezing conditions. >> definitely, with the actual temperatures, this prevents any frost bit on the face.

>> reporter: and while snowplows are working around the clock, officials here are urging people to use extreme caution on the roadways because when these 35-mile-an-hour wind gusts come through, they pick up the snow and can create whiteout conditions. and the snow machine isn't letting up anytime soon. we could see in parts of western new york another several feet through the weekend, on top of what has, just a wild week of weather. hoda, i'll send it back to you. >> all right. emilie ikeda, stay warm. thanks. >> we can hear the wind through the mic, and that wind is biting, al. >> that's right. frostbite a real problem in a matter of minutes. so right now, we've got lake-effect snow warnings, where emily is, from buffalo up to watertown, but also winter storm warnings, winter storm watches and advisories for 66 million people from the east coast all the way to the west coast, where this storm is now getting itself together, coming in, bringing in snow from the rockies, all the way to the midwest. and this secondary system starts to develop, and that's going to bring rain, ice, and snow to the tennessee river valley, where nashville, memphis, all of those spots were paralyzed this

weekend. then tomorrow light to moderate snow reaches the mid-atlantic states. it's going to be a slow commute along i-95. not a lot of heavy snow, but it's going to be really a pesky kind of situation. and then saturday, those strong winds, as emily mentioned, cranking up the lake-effect snow with slick travel, blowing and drifting snow. about 2 to 4 inches, central new york state, new jersey, on into pennsylvania. but heavier snow from buffalo, oswego, watertown, we're talking about a foot or more. and we've got windchill alerts for 13 million folks from the plains all the way to the midwest. minimum windchills late in the week. chicago, minus 13. minus 7 in nashville. minus 8, wichita, by saturday. denver, you'll be at minus 13. and this cold air is not going anywhere until early next week. guys? >> all right, al. i'll check back with you in a

white house correspondent gabe gutierrez. gabe, good morning to you. >> hey, savannah, good morning. this is turning into a tense daily back and forth, drawing the u.s. deeper and deeper into this conflict. defense officials say the u.s. targeted multiple sites inside yemen. the u.s. navy ships launching tomahawk missiles to take out houthi weapons before they could target ships in the red sea. you'll remember the iran-backed houthi militants have attacked dozens of ships there since november, threatening global commerce and raising fears the unrest could raise prices around the world. this is the fourth time in a week the u.s. has conducted strikes like these, and the white house is warning more could be coming if the houthis don't stop their attacks. meanwhile, u.s. officials are watching yet another troubling sign of escalation in the wider region. pakistan announcing overnight it carried out its own retaliatory strikes against what it calls terrorist hideouts in iran. iranian state tv says that multiple civilians are dead. several conflicts the white house is tracking this morning, savannah. >> all right, gabe. thank you very much. and another note from washington, president biden and top congressional leaders met at the white house yesterday, the

senate inching closer to a bipartisan immigration deal that would unlock critical military aid for ukraine as well, but the deal is hanging in doubt this morning because speaker mike johnson and house conservatives have been pressing the democrat-led senate to take up the gop border bill known as hr 2 instead. after yesterday and the progress there, johnson seemed to soften that demand. he called the meeting productive. last night, however, the speaker still refused to putting a senate passed immigration deal on the house floor. meantime, findings from a justice department investigation into that botched police response during the uvalde school massacre set to be released today. 19 students and two teachers at robb elementary were killed in the 2022 attack, and yesterday, their families met with attorney general merrick garland. nbc's justice correspondent ken dilanian is in uvalde for us

this morning. hey, ken, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. the families of the children who died inside of robb elementary still have many questions about what happened that day. including why it took authorities more than an hour to engage and kill the 18-year-old gunman. some parents believe this report is their best chance to get answers. this morning, a community still in search of truth and accountability. more than a year after a teenager with an assault-style rifle opened fire inside a texas elementary school, taking the lives of 19 children and 2 adults. later today, attorney general merrick garland will deliver the results of an exhaustive justice department investigation into one of the nation's worst school shootings. a source briefed on the nearly 600-page report telling nbc news it includes disturbing new details. among them, authorities relaying incorrect information to some parents in the aftermath of the shooting, about whether their children had survived or been killed. according to the source, the report will also detail the failures of medical first

responders, police, and government officials. all of it building on a scathing investigation by state lawmakers that found that systemic failures and egregiously poor decision-making among the nearly 400 law enforcement officers who responded. police body cam footage from the shooting shows officers milling about in the hallways, and mistaking a door where the killer was for being locked. >> we're having a problem getting in the [ bleep ] room because it's locked. >> reporter: more than an hour passing before officers confronted and stopped the shooter. during that time, children called 911 begging for help. of one of those exchanges revealed in a "frontline" documentary on pbs. >> please help me. there's a lot of dead bodies here. >> reporter: jacob alvarado, an off-duty border patrol agent, telling savannah he rushed to the school where his daughter was a second grader, his wife a teacher who texted him about the shooter.

both of them survived. >> i could just see kids coming out of the windows and kids coming my way, so i was just helping all the kids out. >> reporter: among those who didn't make it out, 9-year-old jacqueline, one of the youngest victims. you don't ever get over a loss like this? >> never. especially this type of loss. it's unbearable. people of tennessee get over it, go on, how can you? that's your child. >> reporter: investigators say responding officers also broke decades of active shooter protocol by failing to confront and prevent the threat immediately, but only a handful of officers have been disciplined. the school behind me still stands because it's evidence in multiple lawsuits. >> ken dilanian in uvalde. about quarter after now. we've got craig joining the table. good morning, craig. >> good morning. boeing fighting for its reputation this morning with both the faa and airline inspectors reviewing quality control at its plants. nearly two weeks after that mid-air emergency that's grounded the max-9 fleet, the faa says the first round of inspections is now complete with

more inspections to come. nbc senior correspondent tom costello is at washington dulles airport for us. tom, let's start with what exactly are investigators looking at? >> reporter: so the investigative team is now reviewing the data from that first guadalupe group of inspections. 40 planes have now been inspected, max-9s, looking specifically at the door plug, and is there a wider problem there. and only after the faa has all of that data will it decide how and when it might proceed. now, as you know, the door plug is what exploded out of the side of that alaska airlines plane nearly two weeks ago. and the ntsb is also investigating right now how that event happened, why it happened! that's happening, even as other airlines, alaska and united say they have found loose bolts on some of their door plugs on grounded max-9s. in all, 171 max-9s are grounded. they are flown exclusively by united and alaska airlines here in the united states.

so they are now forced to cancel about 150 flights a day on alaska's part, about 200 flights a day or so on united's part. this is a growing number of cancellations we've had for almost two weeks. and in a stunning demonstration in the loss of trust in boeing, alaska says it will send its own inspectors into boeing plants to double-check boeing's work. really a stunning development as this entire situation now weighs heavily on the reputations of boeing and its suppliers as well, craig. >> let's talk about that because it's not just boeing, tom. the faa also investigating a key supplier for boeing. what more can you tell us about that? >> that's spirit aerosystems. they make the fuselage, the tube, if you will, and the ntsb says that the door plug was actually made by a spirit unite in malaysia. the door plug that blew out. so spirit provides the fuselage and the door plug to boeing,

boeing fits it out and turns it into a plane. spirit says that it is very focused right now on trying to ensure that every product comes out at a high quality, but they've had quality control issues for years. boeing's ceo was at a spirit plant yesterday, saying we, collectively, boeing and spirit, have got to do better. we've got to learn from this experience, we've got to up our game, we can never have a repeat of this. by the way, boeing has now contracted with an outside audit team to look at boeing's quality control problems as well. >> all right. tom costello for us there at dulles international airport in northern virginia. tom, thank you. back over to mr. roker who has broken out the national maps. >> that's right. as we mentioned, we have that lake-effect snow happening, was along the eastern seaboard, plenty of sunshine, going to be gorgeous. next round of snow coming through the plains, sunny skies down through the gulf on into texas, southwest as well. some coastal rain moving in with another storm system yet again approaching. we're going to get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.

two big royal health announcements in one day is extremely rare, and kate's condition sounds pretty serious. nearly two weeks in the hospital, another three months out of public view, and kensington palace isn't telling us why she needed surgery. this morning, for the second day in a row, kate, the princess of wales is recovering in the hospital after what kensington palace says a successful planned abdominal surgery. a source at kensington palace confirms her condition is non-cancerous. >> i wish kate well. i think she's a fantastic princess. >> i wish her a fast recovery. >> i hope she's going to be okay. >> reporter: the palace says she'll now cancel all events until after easter, a long time to be out of view for the most popular royal. >> you know, i was told that she had a very packed schedule between now and coming up easter and she was very much looking forward to it, and that was just a couple of weeks back.

things have obviously moved fairly quickly. >> reporter: kate has long been seen as healthy, very sporty, talking about the benefits of exercise. >> i really generally love all sports. you know, i love swimming -- personally i love swimming. the colder the better. >> reporter: with no known health issues outside of the much-publicized extreme morning sickness with all three pregnancies, hospitalized for one. and last week on her 42nd birthday, the royal family posted this behind-the-scenes snap from king charles' coronation, no inkling that anything might be wrong. we last saw kate celebrating christmas with the whole family at san drink sandringham, and the statement adds that she hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for

her children as possible. george, charlotte, and, of course, little louis are the center of their lives and prince william will also postpone events to support his family. also yesterday, in a stunning second royal health statement in one day, buckingham palace announced that king charles will have a corrective procedure next week for an enlarged prostate. his majesty's condition is benign, the palace says, reassuring news for this 75-year-old monarch. now, charles will also postpone his engagements, at least in the next couple of weeks, according to buckingham palace, but this is a lot of high-profile faces out of view since prince william will not be holding any public engagements while his wife is in the hospital and will be scaling back over the next couple of months. >> molly, thank you. let's get more prospective on all of this. dr. rashny raj is with us. but first let's turn to nbc royal commentator daisy mcandrew who's with us in london. i'm sure there's lots of speculation out there, it's kind of a long hospital stay and a long recovery. what are they saying out there? >> well, of course, whilst a lot of people do see that it's rather unseemly to speculate about somebody's private medical

matters, that hasn't stopped an awful lot of people just wondering what on earth it could have been that has hospitalized kate for such a long time. as your medical expert will tell you, two weeks in hospital for someone as seemingly young and fit as kate, does seem like a worringly long time. of course, there's been speculation, could it be something gynecological, could be it be something bowel-related, something that means her stomach muscles will be cut through in that operation? those are the sorts of questions that are being asked here. i also think there has been a lot of admiration for what is a much more open statement about medical matters from kate and from charles than we've seen before. >> it's interesting, daisy, because it's a planned medical procedure, according to the palace, but then they also had to apologize for canceling a bunch of stuff, which makes you wonder why did you ever schedule

it if you knew that was planned. is there any indication on that? >> reporter: exactly. they've said, you know, this wasn't emergency surgery, this was elective surgery, but again, elective surgery could be, you deciding to have an operation in two days' time. it just means you're not being rushed to hospital in an ambulance. so as you quite rightly said, she has apologized for having to cancel a lot of plans. there was the thought that they were going on a foreign tour this spring to italy, which, of course, has been pushed back. so people are concerned that this is a serious medical matter. >> dr. raj, this is your area of expertise. again, we don't want to be unseemly here and overspeculate, but planned abdominal surgery, 10 to 14 days of recovery in the hospital, then months of recovery at home after that, what, if anything, can we glean from that? >> i do think the 10 to 14 days seems a bit long. now, i will say, you know, in america, we tend to try to get people out of the hospital very quickly for a variety of reasons, including the fact that it's not very healthy to be in the hospital. you can get infections, with things like that. i do think in the uk they keep

people in the hospital a little longer than that. i would say in the uk, after abdominal surgery, about seven days. we have no idea what kind of surgery she had, but when they say abdominal surgery, that implies cutting through abdominal wall muscles. that can be very painful, you have to manage pain afterwards, there's possibility of wound infection, and there's weakness and fatigue. it does take a while for those muscles to heal, for you to be able to be back to your fighting function and being able to lift heavy things or walk a long period of time. so the several months doesn't bother me actually. we often tell people after abdominal surgery, you're not going to be 100% for probably three months. but the 10 to 14 days tends to seem a bit long, and i agree with savannah, this question of, was it really planned, because she had to cancel so many events afterwards. if i had a patient that i said needs surgery in two days, that's a pretty urgent situation and i don't consider that truly elective. >> you wonder if it's semantics a little bit. >> right, you know. >> so she didn't disclose exactly what her illness is.

we are back. 7:42 new details this morning on that shark attack that happened at a popular resort in the bahamas. >> the 10-year-old maryland boy who was bitten in the leg during more on this story. a walking with sharks experience is said to be recovering well, and the tour operator is promising a thorough investigation. >> nbc's sam brock joins us with more on this story hey, sam, good morning >> reporter: hi, hoda, savannah, craig, good morning. doctors in the bahamas tell nbc news that that child is recovering well after surgery on his right leg and is planning on flying home to maryland. that after a family's tropical vacation ended in trauma this morning the popular walking with slashings experience at the atlantis resort in the bahamas is closed and no longer

available for booking on the resort's website just days after a 10-year-old boy from maryland was bitten on his leg. the tour operator, blue adventures by stewart cove, writing in a statement, with the we are deeply saddened that a child suffered a shark bite during an in-water experience on monday the company says it's begun an internal investigation, adding, incidents like this involving interactions with marine life, even with the species of sharks included in this experience, are rare and never acceptable. michael and torrey massy say they were in the water when the child was attacked >> it was like just a very surreal moment like nothing else i've ever experienced. >> reporter: as multiple videos posted to social media show, the shark tank experience is part of the mayan temple area of the resort's aquaventure zone. guests use special helmets in order to breathe underwater and get close-up views of caribbean

reef sharks and nurse sharks neither are considered an aggressive species of sharks, and on the website it says no swimming experience necessary to participate. but kids must be at least 10 years old. blue adventures by stewart cove say they've been operating this experience since 2006 and have never had a guest-related incident occur nbc news reached out to the atlantis for comments, but so far has not received a response. the masseys say the experience started out fine, but took a turn when the boy entered the water. >> when you go to a resort of this nature, you expect that safety is paramount and you expect there to be certain protocols. >> reporter: the couple says the dive guides in the water reacted quickly to the danger, a popular and long-standing attraction now on hold indefinitely and according to the hospital, the boy and his parents, guys, who were fwhnot in the tank when this all happened, should be

and what it is inhabiting, owning all of ourselves, and having the space to love and appreciate all of these things that we may have exorcized or judged, but the idea is owning it and having compassion it's almost like a maternal feeling that we have with all of our different parts and pieces and i think that's, that's what's so exciting now >> there were so many big moments for you recently i know you talk about this a lot, but in "people" magazine, you brought up this important part of your life that you kept hidden away, that you were raped a long time ago, but wounds are still there, and you finally named it and that was the part of the article that struck me the most. you said it out loud you'd made excuses about it, maybe it wasn't that, wasn't such a big deal, but why is that so important, to call it out >> well, it's interesting. one of my best friends on this earth, for the last couple of years, and she's somebody who

turned 60 recently -- her name is regina -- and she would always say to me -- she would just grab me and go, mariska, name everything. name it. and when she first said it, i wasn't even sure that i fully understand it. but there are moments in our lives when people give us these gifts of wisdom, and then we -- you know, the penny drops. and it was so important for me to write that article, for that reason exactly, to name it, but also, i said, a man raped me i wasn't raped a man raped me there's a big difference >> yeah. >> and i thought liz mcneill -- i'm just going to say it -- talk about naming things at "people" magazine, handled it with such grace and respect and tenderness and the way that any survivor

should be dealt with in our society, and it was so beautiful. it was so beautiful. and i felt that they were exemplary with how this subject should be dealt with and i'm really grateful. and i honor them for that. >> and how does that -- this process contribute to your healinging because healing can take a long time and a lifetime. sometimes it can feel like it can happen instantaneously. >> yeah, i think it's a matter of physics, right? if we hold a weight, it's very heavy, right but if it's sand, and we all hold a piece of it and we carry it for each other in our society, it's not as heavy and so for me naming it, it was really powerful, and i feel lighter, and it was time not to carry that, and it took a certain maturity and compassion, and i was listened to, and, most importantly, i listened to myself and that's what i urge people to

we're back with "today" we're back with "today" food if you're looking to tweak that dinner recipe, we have some recipes to shake up that routine. we have beef kabobs and hummus you can make at home inspired by his restaurant how is business? >> business is great we're doing great. we're having a really good time. i also have to say you crushed my last name right now >> i did >> you did so well >> i'm glad i got your name right. >> so, so good, nobody ever does >> we're going to make some beef, which are cubes of beef. now, you can use chicken, you can use beef, you can use mushroom, you can use whatever you want what we want to make is this fantastic marinade, which is red peppers, onions, a little bit of garlic, and some tomato paste. they're already eating down there. >> i know. hoda is on her second plate or already.

>> it's so good, michael by the way, laser wolf is one of the best restaurants in new york city the whole thing is an experience i highly recommend anyone go there. >> i'm happy that you say that i agree with you i think it's an incredible restaurant it's amazing, we do -- >> chef, tell people at home, this might be intimidating to them, because of what you're making and the kabobs and this marinade, but this is easy stuff. >> this is super easy. it's peppers, onions, some spices, some garlic, and the idea is that we'll blend this to make it look kind of like a gaz gazpacho at laser wolf brooklyn, we cook it over charcoal but you can use a broiler or an oven the marinade is what's important. we tether the meat so easy. carson's doing it. you can do it.

so we're going to skewer it, let it chill, and boil it, and you will have these amazing, amazing kabobs >> how do you know when it's done on the broiler? a little charred on the outside, but cooked all the way through on a kabob >> i like medium-to-medium rare, but you can do whatever you want if you're using chicken, you'll cook it through. we're talking about the difference of a few minutes. with that, we'll make a little hummus you're going to have a snack while we do this >> it's great. >> it's good >> oh, my god. flavors are incredible >> garlic, lemon >> really tender >> everyone's quiet over there this is sirloin. but like i said, you can use whatever you want. salt, cumin, lemon, garlic now, we'll buzz this up first, because we want the garlic to cook a little bit with the lemon. having that raw garlic taste is not what you want. so we're going to just do this for a second >> so these are the pro tips right here >> this is the pro tip you don't want garlic breath three days after you made your hummus
