residents. oh, my god. it's on fire. oh, my god. >> i think we would all react the same way. breaking overnight, terrifying moments seen as a jet plane catches fire mid-flight. new details coming in on that emergency landing. plus, the 49ers faithful may be soggy for tomorrow's playoff game against the packers, but they have the chance to go home with sweet gear. the prize memorabilia set to hit the auction block. this is "today in the bay." >> we're going to talk about the outage as well. >> yes, happening in los angeles. >> it is friday morning. thank you so much for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington is off this morning. we want to start with the wet weather because it is going to set in across the bay area. we have team coverage as you begin to plan your day. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is in san francisco where there is a warning for high-rise residents. first, meteorologist kari hall is tracking the storm timeline.
5:02 am
>> we are going to be watching this rain coming in later this morning into the afternoon. we can already see the clouds and some very light rain moving just to our north, but we are going to time it out hour-by-hour for you. here we are at noon with some light rain coming in from the coast and starting to stretch into the inland valleys. that's going to be the case as we go throughout today, more and more rain coming in and getting heavier this evening. yellows, reds and even oranges are indicating some very heavy rain that we'll see at 5:00, and this is going to have a big impact on the evening commute as it moves from napa to fairfield, down to livermore, as well as san jose, and into palo alto. as we go into this evening, here we are at 8:00. it's starting to taper off a little for the coastline, but still raining as you make your way away from the coastline. then there will be a brief break during the overnight hours before we get more waves of rain tomorrow, and stopping it right here at 6:00 p.m. on your
5:03 am
saturday, you know what happens then, we are going to have some off and on showers in and around the bay area, and at any point we are going to see some rain coming down. we'll be tracking this as it continues into sunday, as well as monday. more on that coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks so much. as this wet weather moves in, preparations are under way across the bay area. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is in san francisco. ginger, city leaders are sending out a warning to people who live in the high-rise buildings, right? >> reporter: that is correct. good morning, kris and laura. now, the wind is also a concern, in addition to the soggy weather that kari was just talking about. and because of that, san francisco's department of building inspection is keeping a close eye on high-rises and the potential for 30-mile-per-hour winds. you may recall some of these images from last year's storms, 31 high-rise windows broke or cracked around the city during that time.
5:04 am
a report later showed that a majority of the windows already had issues before the winter storms. this time around, san francisco's department of building inspection is asking building owners and managers to make sure vulnerable windows are properly secured. >> as our weather patterns are changing, as storms are becoming more violent, we need to take every precaution, we need to warn people, we've got to get people ready for the worst. >> reporter: well, from high-rises in the city to creeks and water levels in contra costa county, residents are keeping a close eye on places like the san ramon creek that rose several feet and caused flooding in danville during last year's storms. crews have cleared out debris and trimmed branches that could potentially obstruct the creek and lead to flooding. back here in san francisco, last year's storms really led to some change and some action in city laws, including more frequent
5:05 am
building inspections so make sure they can mitigate the risk of any potential risks for windows or other parts of buildings. laura and kris? >> thank you very much. as we track the rain, be sure to download our free nbc bay area app. you can use the interactive radar and track when the wet weather will arrive where you are. breaking overnight, an at las air cargo flight makes an emergency landing after this happened, an engine catching fire on that plane over south florida. videos show flames and sparks coming from one of the engines. the plane landed safely back at miami international airport shortly after it took off. five people were on that plane. they're all okay. we are learning it is a boeing 737 plane. atlas air said in a statement that the plane experienced an engine malfunction soon after departure. this comes weeks after a different boeing aircraft made
5:06 am
an emergency landing because the door plugs fell off midair. the faa is still investigating and has temporarily grounded 171 boeing max 9 planes. a break in a case that once rattled a south bay neighborhood. an explosive device found outside the home of a san jose council member. it unfolded near the willow glen home of dev davis. crews disabled the device before it went off. yesterday san jose police announced an arrest. the suspect is identified as 33-year-old an dress novarro. police say evidence inside his home include a field guide for improvised explosives. davis issues a brief statement expressing relief a suspect is in custody. a live look in oakland where community members are demanding to know the next steps for the

city after findings in a public safety audit. this comes as mayor sheng thao is reviving a program credited with reducing violent crime, which auditors say the city dropped the ball on. it was called operation cease-fire. the audit says it reduced oakland homicides by more than 40% african 2012 and 2017, but during the pandemic it ended. community members are seeking a meeting with the mayor to help chart a path forward. they plan to gather at 9:00 this morning outside of city hall. new this morning, a san francisco-based company is responding to a controversy now brewing in southern california over the actions of one of its now former employees. that incident captured on video. it shows an l.a. city contracted employee hosing down a sidewalk on skid row, but inches away a homeless person appears to be scrambling to collect their belongings. the city says that worker was actually hired by san francisco's urban alchemy, a
5:08 am
nonprofit providing services to the unhoused. that incident is raising flags inside l.a. city hall. the controller's office there tells our sister station in l.a. the city is now looking into the city's contract with urban alchemy and the $14 million it's paid the group since 2021. >> what are we getting for those dollars? what kinds of services are our unhoused neighbors getting? and are we getting services that reflect the values of our city? >> shortly after this video surfaced, urban alchemy tweeted its own screen grab, calling the employees's actions unacceptable, adding that person is no longer employed. niners fans may be hoping for a win in more ways than one when the team takes on green bay tomorrow. we have a live look at levi's stadium where the divisional playoff game takes place, and somewhere around the fourth quarter one of a kind merchandise will be sold to the

highest bidders. they're holding a dig for gold auction. equipment will be auctioned off during the game. the program is twofold because it preserves material and memorabilia that may otherwise go to waste. bidding will close at 7:30 and the procedures will go to supporting bay area youth programs. nbc sports bay area is your source for tomorrow's pre and postgame coverage. the pregame show will start at 4:00 p.m. can't wait. >> those aren't the ones you cut up and make into other outfits? >> if you're creative. >> not for that price. >> i would think not. so we're thinking it's going to be a soggy game, right, kari? >> we are expecting it to be kind of raining off and on and temperatures in the upper 50s, also breezy. but you just want to be prepared. there may be some breaks during the game, but we are looking at some scattered showers all around the bay area, and kind of a cool evening with some upper 50s.
5:10 am
so as we are preparing for that, we are talking, also, about the gusty winds we'll see, and today we're going to start to see winds picking up along the coastline. half moon bay, here we are at 2:00 this afternoon when the rain really starts to move in. it's going to be breezy and, of course, with some of those higher wind gusts we'll see in the hills and along the coastline, we have concerns about the potential of downed trees, as well as power. so make sure you're prepared for that. we'll be tracking that and i'll have another hour-by-hour outlook of the rain. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> we're not going to talk about vallejo today. it continues to dominate the state's best prices, beating these by about a quarter. below 4 bucks, still in marin county, cash price $3.99 at arco on redwood highway. alameda county, san leandro, $3.73 at bay fair gas mart on east 14th street. and the lowest price we have is
5:11 am
in campbell, $3.65, north star gas on west campbell avenue. it's santa clara's lowest price, as well as the lowest on our board, reported by you on gasbuddy.com. the roadways, a calm drive. there's fog in contra costa county, highway 4, discovery bay, watch that. also slowing on eastbound 24, though there's no construction or crews on the grid. we'll continue to follow that. there's no problem or delays on the bay bridge, despite the same work we reported yesterday. so there's no backup at the toll plaza. back to you. 5:10 right now. macy's is closing stores and making cuts. coming up next, the bay area store bracing for impact and the reason the retailer says it needs to make some changes. meantime, the american shopper, the american consumer, feeling much better about the economy. and going to icy depths to help a dog in need. the tale of an amazing rescue by first responders amid freezing temperatures in the midwest

good friday morning. 5:13. let's get a look at our forecast for half moon bay. we are starting out cloudy, temperatures in the low 50s. along the coast, we're going to see the rain arriving around noon and getting heavier as we go throughout the day. very soggy evening and it will be off and on for the weekend. a look at details in the full microclimate forecast. the golden gate bridge, i
5:15 am
saw those cones on the northbound side, away from us. they got picked up gradually in two spots along that northbound route. southbound moves smoothly. there may be a crew coming down through marin county. good morning. happy friday to you. apple puts its new $3,000 augmented reality goggles on sale today. we reported yesterday netflix would not provide an app for these new googles. now we've learned youtube won't either. now, we don't know how this turns out. but the success of the new device often depends less on the hardware and more on what you can do with it. it depends on software, developers. >> developers, developers, developers, developers, developers. >> this is microsoft steve balmer about 15 years ago, reminding creators it's the software developers that make or break devices. this is one of the most classic
5:16 am
bits and sweatiest bits of sound in all of tech history. so the fact that the two major software developers are not supporting the vision pro, that's kind of significant. youtube was the very first app on the very first iphone. if you like tech history as much as i do, stick around for bob redell in about 30 minutes. he's celebrating 40 years since the creation of the mcintosh. pretty much anything bob reports on is worth sticking around for. we'll get consumer sentiment data at 7:00 a.m. consumer confidence showed americans are feeling much more confident about the economy. the economic numbers have been strong for months, but it seems like people are just realizing it now. another warning for winemakers. there's too much wine, not enough wine drinkers. silicon valley bank's wine report came out this week with the same warning as before, people are just less interested in wine.
5:17 am
younger people a lot less interested in alcohol. a headline from last year, the biggest threat to the wine industry, irrelevance with young people. >> younger consumers are looking at health messages and they're more inclined to just skip alcohol altogether and, you know, you go to the dry january, sober september, so those kind of things start to have an impact on total alcohol consumption as well. >> rob mcmillan says who people do drink, they tend to drink spirits, vodkas and things. because the vodka industry has figured out how to make high-end -- it may be the same stuff, but high-end label stuff. >> the creativity in labels overall is -- >> incredible. >> i'm always shocked, the whole point of vodka is that it doesn't taste like anything. >> it's just pure alcohol. "the new york times" did a taste test and they determined the best vodka in the world is
5:18 am
kirkland. >> we can afford that one. >> yes. >> thank you, scott. >> it's not time for that martini just yet. macy's is set to make mass layoffs as it plans to close five stores nationwide, and one right here in the bay area. the retailer plans to cut more than 2,300 jobs as it tries to streamline operations. the company spokesperson says the macy's in san leandro's bay fair center will be closed. it currently employs 60 people. a company memo says it plans to add more automation to its supply chain and outsource some roles. 5:17 right now. trending this morning, a dog in indiana got himself into a chilly situation, after chasing geese. >> he is lucky that someone wanted to do a daring rescue, local firefighters. he was on a walk with his owner in bend, indiana. the owner says he was fixated on the geese near st. joseph river.
5:19 am
he ran after one, ended up in the icy water and couldn't manage to swim to the edge. rescuers waded into the water and managed to get oliver back to safety. he is now back home with his family. >> wow, they have tough dogs in indiana. my little california dog is, like, it's raining, i don't want to go outside. >> same. >> fun fact, my uncle ernie, beautiful person, he saved some ducklings stuck in an icy pond in colorado. we thought it was the coolest because we were little and he was in the newspaper. big time. >> i need a duck man. at least dry this morning. >> yes, it is. we're going to need a few more hours to prep for that rain that's going to be coming in. and we've been talking about this storm system arriving. and we are seeing the spotty light rain initially off the coast. that's going to be coming in today. there's going to be more and more waves of it. so it's basically the cumulative
5:20 am
effects that we'll see of the storm system. it's not going to come in hard and fast. we are just going to see waves of rain. with the ground already saturated, within the next couple of days we may start to see impacts of the storm systems coming in. so hour-by-hour, we're starting out with some light rain, and there will be some times of heavier rain. we're expecting the first wave of heavy rain around 4:00 to 5:00, but it is ending by 8:00 for most of us. a little bit of a break overnight, and then we're just going to see off and on showers into tomorrow, as well as the evening. and then a break on sunday morning into the early afternoon. then another round of rain coming in late sunday into monday. and i do think the biggest impact from these storm systems will be between late sunday night and early monday morning. once we get a couple of days of some rain going, one more round of heavier rain may cause some flooding issues. as far as what we see for today, and how much rain we could see, most of the rainfall totals will
5:21 am
be about a quarter inch of rain or less, from san francisco on southward. so once again, this is not a big impact. but then the farther north you go, we're going to see higher rainfall totals, and we may really start to see it adding up there, with the rivers and creeks starting to rise, as well as some street flooding. but in total this weekend, spots like oakland will see a little more than a half inch of rainfall, and we could see about a half inch of rain in san jose, as well as the tri-valley. the rain continues into the forecast for early next week, with some breaks in between. we're expecting another wave of rain on wednesday, and then again on thursday. and so with all of the rain that we're getting, we're going to see some snow in the sierra, but because the temperatures are warmer, we're going to see it higher in elevation, and at times mixing with rain. so flooding issues possible there as well. we take a look at our seven-day forecast, there will be some
5:22 am
breaks of rain, and you'll just have to plan our day and activities around when we do get breaks. mike, you were looking at a crash in sunol. >> i am. a smooth, easy drive this friday, should start with an easy pattern. there's a fog advisory for the altamont pass and where you see the darker yellow through tracy and toward contra costa county. but, yes, this crash is in sunol, right along 680. it's on foothill road. so foothill road has the crash along the freeway. no major injuries reported. the volume is not a problem. just a little build for 84 coming toward the merge and toward the south bay. vasco road still at its minimum, traveling from marsh creek road to 580. there is a crash a little farther up, so watch that on the surface streets. but no major issues for the freeways. the bay bridge toll plaza is clear right now and a smooth drive across the span. back to you. >> thank you, mike. it is 5:22.
5:23 am
coming up next, nbc bay area responds. >> two folks face a corporate runaround. we jump in to jump the hurdles and but four figures of cash back where it belongs. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds next. plus, playoff season continues here on nbc bay area and peacock. tampa bay buccaneers and detroit lions hit the gridiron this sunday and you can watch all of the action here starting at 11:00 in the morning.

5:32 am
consider your red rain gear. >> that's right. break out the ponchos. let's start with meteorologist kari hall, tracking what should be an early start to a wet weekend. >> yes, we're going to see the rain coming in today. it's going to be off and on throughout the weekend. we are hoping that we can catch a break for the game, but you do want to be prepared just in case. we are taking a look at where we're starting this morning around the bay area. temperatures in the low 50s. it's cloudy, and we are seeing the storm just off the coast. that's going to be moving closer. as we take a look at san jose, our morning starts out dry and we're also going to see a mostly cloudy morning, with temperatures going from low 50s to low 60s, and here it looks like the rain arrives around 3:00 to 4:00 this afternoon and gets heavier this evening. that's going to be the case as we see the rain ramping up for the evening commute. it may be heavy at times. there will be a brief break overnight, but just expect the waves of rain to continue throughout the weekend. and, yes, that's a look at 6:30
5:33 am
tomorrow evening. mike, you were tracking the headlights at the golden gate bridge. timing is critical. as far as the commute, i'm watching these headlights heading south because there's a crew on the north side in marin county that typically clears in a few minutes. so far, no problems on the sensors. the arrow on the right, we had a lot of slowing show up. there were no crews in the area. it has cleared up as far as the sensor read. where it's highlighted yellow, there's fog in contra costa county. we had a build toward sunol heading into silicon valley, and there's something going on in the south bay this weekend. i'll hand it off to you guys. >> come on, mike. >> whatever could it be? i don't know. 5:30, a look at levi's stadium, what mike was alluding to. get ready, we are hoping that tomorrow is just the first postseason step in the niners road to the super bowl. >> if somehow you didn't know, mike was kidding, come on, the niners are hosting the green bay
5:34 am
packers in their nfc divisional playoff game. niners coming in as a top seed. the packers are already playing with house money. they shocked the dallas cowboys last week in the wild card round after sneaking into the postseason as the seventh seed. nbc sports bay area 49ers insider matt maiocco says budding star brock purdy is ready. >> this is a team that comes to levi's stadium with a lot of confidence. >> this game is getting attention because of the rivalry, the niners and packers meet for an nfl record tenth time in the playoffs. one guy who knows the rivalry well is former longtime 49ers tight end brent jones. in the late '90s he faced the packers three straight years in win or go home games.
5:35 am
>> while there's respect, there's that friendly dislike of the packers, and i think they feel the same way about the 49ers, just because of years of battling for that same position that you would love to be in the super bowl. and so this makes for a great longtime rival and it's exciting that it's back. >> one thing to keep in mind, the niners have not played a meaningful game since new year's eve when they clinch the top seed. everyone is coming in healthy, including christian mccaffrey, who strained his calf late in the regular season. sports books are calling the niners heavy favorites. the los angeles innocence project, in other news, the taking up the case of scott peterson, the man convicted of killing his wife and unborn child. laci peterson was eight months pregnant in 2002 when her husband reported her missing. her body was later found washed
5:36 am
up on the shore of the berkeley marina. her husband scott was arrested and later convicted of murder. the innocence project is taking up his case, working to get new evidence presented in court that they believe could overturn his conviction. they're focusing on these three pieces of evidence, a burned-out veneer the peterson's house around the time laci disappeared, along with a burglary at a house across the street the day before laci peterson went missing, and the new evidence found on the shore of the san francisco bay. scott peterson has always maintained his innocence. happening this weekend, get ready for a visual treat in wine country. tomorrow marks the return of napa's lighted art festival. you'll be able to see about ten displays showing off light art sculptures and projection artworks in downtown napa. best of all, it is free. organizers say while the festival goes on each night for nearly a full month, the
5:37 am
projected works will only be on display for the first nine days. >> there's some just really amazing pieces that are going to wow people, and i really enjoy people seeing the artwork. >> the festival will go on for five weeks starting tomorrow through february 18th. there's also a lantern parade happening on february 10th. meteorologist kari hall is joining us. there's a lot of stuff going on this weekend outdoors. so we're going to have to time our visits. >> i know. it's going to be really tough, though. it makes it a little easier to have the nbc bay area app to get those alerts. but there are some really beautiful things to check out like the napa lighted art festival. we can see some rain coming down. the good thing about this festival, it lasts for several weeks. so if you don't have that opportunity to see things clearly today or rather tomorrow or sunday, we are going to have some more opportunities in the future. and, of course, we've been
5:38 am
watching closely the forecast for the game, and it does show the potential of at least some light showers at kickoff at 5:15, in the upper 50s. it's going to get slightly cooler throughout the game, with some breezy winds, and some off and on rain. so we are going to have those rain chances continue through tomorrow evening, and if you're trying to escape the rain, good luck. because even l.a. will have rain coming in for the weekend. with our temperatures in the low 60s for today, it will be cloudy, but that rain will be arriving tomorrow. temperatures only in the mid-50s, and we'll see more of the same on sunday as well. if your weekend plans take you to the palisades tahoe, with the next storm coming in, temperatures are going to be a little too warm for this to be all snow. there will be a mixture of rain and snow and we'll see it flip flopping back and forth and really only elevations above 7,000 feet will so snow. mike, you're seeing a number of notes for the south bay roads. >> folks, the sensors are
5:39 am
changing in san jose. typical pattern for north 101 right there near oakland road. no drama, no problem. also, we've had this all week, and this is an issue for 101, the last day for the scheduled cleanup. i passed the crew in the opposite direction yesterday, midday. i was traveling north, they were traveling south through mountain view. a lot of equipment. folks have known about this between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and so far i haven't seen any major impact, aside from when they do arrive. the big issue for saturday, this could actually affect local streets as early as today, we see the signs up on 237 and this is levi's stadium for the game. tasman will be closed starting tomorrow. back to you. >> thanks so much. you may have sent all of your holiday cards in the mail, but be prepared, because starting sunday the price of forever stamps is going up again. this is the fifth price hike in the past three years. nbc news political reporter noah
5:40 am
joins us. >>. >> reporter: the longer answer has to do with a changing business model for the usps. for the last 20 years, first class letter volume has been dropping and package delivery has been increasing. so they have to invest in changing technology, changing infrastructure, and they're trying to set themselves up better for the future. and a usps spokesperson has said they still remain one of the cheapest, most affordable ways to get a letter from one point to another point anywhere in the world. >> better than the pony express a long time ago. how is the price of a first class u.s. stamp today compared to what a stamp used to cost to adjust for the inflation you were talking about? >> reporter: when you adjust it, it actually tracks really well historically with where we used to be 50 years ago. it was almost identical when you
5:41 am
factor in inflation. it's stayed that way for the last 50 years or so. there have been bigger swings in the past. even when you look back 150 years, the price of a stamp is pretty much right where it was when you adjust for inflation. a recent poll actually found that most of america feels that the usps is actually properly funded or underfunded, very few people seem to have an issue with the cost of a stamp or the way that -- very few people think that the usps is overfunded. >> because we have to constantly adjust, even our own personal lives as well, we can expect more price hikes in the future, i would imagine? >> we should probably continue to expect small price hikes as they continue to change this business model. another research survey found, though, that more than eight out of ten americans didn't know the exact price of a stamp. so it kind of just goes to show what's another two cents here or
5:42 am
there. most people won't notice. >> it's 66 cents now and it's going up to 68 cents. >> two more cents starting sunday. >> if you buy the forever stamps, they're forever at the price you bought them for. >> it's a good investment for inflation purposes. >> exactly. i like writing notes and letters to people. all right, good to know. noah pransky, thank you so much. be my pen pal. when i had a pen pal, it was 25 cents, i think. we're moving you forward with so much more coming up on "today in the bay." including our friday morning school shout-out series. first, bob, what are you up to? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. look who is turning 40 years old. the little computer that revolutionalized personal computing. we'll take you live to the computer history museum in mountain view. you know what else we look forward to?

(vo) want to get paid up to two days early? you can with wells fargo. happy friday to you. the time is 5:45. if you're in and around saratoga, expect it to be a mostly cloudy morning and temperatures in the upper 40s at 8:00. at noon, we're still dry, but rain will soon be coming in. we'll see it through the evening and off and on throughout the weekend. so i'll have a look at that timeline and what to expect in a few minutes. the richmond side of the rich heading to san rafael, looking at more headlights. also on the right, some flashing lights near the toll plaza. we'll check that out as well. and of course there are different lights over at the bay bridge and we'll see you how things are shaping up over there coming up. >> thank you so much. republicans are wrapping up an impeachment committee hearing in which they didn't even ask
5:47 am
the subject to testify. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. they wanted to kick alejandro mayorkas out of office. >> impeach him, and that's the question that never got settled by the committee looking to start the impeachment. the republican-led house homeland security committee very concerned about what's happening at the border but never offered any specific charges, specific accusations or specific evidence that secretary mayorkas did something wrong. nor has mayorkas testified in his own defense, nor did the committee call any constitutional experts to testify as to how or whether they could impeach the secretary of homeland security. you may recall a different committee looking to start the impeachment process on president biden did call constitutional experts at their hearing, but it didn't go the way they wanted. their own witnesses told them they did not have the goods on

biden. now, here we see secretary austin, the secretary of defense. we can talk about him in just a minute. but now is not the time. the head of the house armed services committee, meantime, does want secretary lloyd austin, the defense secretary, to testify at their committee hearing. austin was hospitalized recently, put under general anesthetic without telling the national command authority. not just a risk to national defense, an embarrassment to the white house as well. the president didn't know the secretary was missing. people who know austin say he's an incredibly private person. he was in the hospital for a procedure and later complications for a routine procedure involving prostate cancer. now this incredibly private person is going to have to discuss something in public on tv and in front of congress. the house has passed a continuing resolution that will keep the government open all the

way until march. this is not the first time lawmakers have kicked the can down the road instead of deciding on a budget. here is a congressman from arizona who says, we've got to stop deciding not to decide. >> congress considers no budgets, legislation never hits against cost limitations, and every bipartisan disagreement is solved simply by spending more on the programs of the opposing party. this continuing resolution is a perfect example of how we arrived at this unsustainable fiscal situation, and i urge my colleagues to oppose this legislation. >> now, the government was facing shutdown tonight. that house passed a cr, though, which is very surprising. one of speaker johnson's promises was no more continuing resolutions. now congress has six more weeks to solve the problem. plot twist, they're on vacation for three of those weeks. other news, the district attorney in the racketeering

case against donald trump will have to explain her relationship to one of her prosecutors. fani willis accused of having a romantic relationship with a prosecutor she hired. she's been subpoenaed by his estranged wife to testify in their divorce hearing. she's asking to be excused. at some point, willis is going to have to say under oath exactly what that relationship is. now, does this affect the georgia case against trump? maybe. if under georgia law they replace the prosecutor, the next prosecutor, laura, may not be as eager to prosecute the former president. >> that will be interesting to see how that plays out. thank you, scott. trending this morning, the computer that steve jobs says was insanely great turns 40 years old. on january 24th, 1984, apple introduced the mcintosh computer in this super bowl commercial that aired only once, but, boy,
5:51 am
was it impressionable. >> i mean, only once on tv, and then we've played it so many times since. the computer history museum in mountain view honoring this achievement with a special event. bob redell joins us from the museum. good morning, bob. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. the mac hit 40, a pop-up exhibit within the computer history museum. you saw the lady is wearing a leotard. this is one of the 20. it's not clear if that's the one that appeared in the commercial. to the left, one of the original mouses. the mcintosh was revolutionary because it had the user interface which made the computers much more user friendly. a replica of the pirate flag that flew over the development team's building on the apple campus as they were putting this together. and of course the mac itself and a prototype of one of the original boards that was inside the mac. this is courtesy of one of the

original designers. good morning to you, dag. we were talking about this computer board earlier and i want you to look at that rectangular chip. what is the significance of that? >> the large black chip is a motorola 68000 processing unit, which is the brains behind the mac, the thing that let it do computer graphics. >> they didn't get that chip until towards the end of the development? >> that's right, it was fairly late in the design cycle when they made the choice to go with the 68,000. there were other less powerful alternatives that were less expensive, but they opted for the more powerful one so they could do the graphic user interface. >> there was a concern over expense? >> initially, but it was the only way at the time to do the amazing graphics that the mac could do. >> people who are watching, who weren't around when this computer came out, we were an

ibm pc world. what was the significance? >> the significance was that you could use a mouse and just point and click at different things on the screen instead of having to remember these kind of obscure commands that you would type in on a screen as you would on the ibm pc. >> quickly, the other day i did speak with bill atkinson, one of the original engineers who helped develop the mcintosh. he created the quick draw who took advantage of it, and creating the menu bar, double-click, atkinson said he, steve jobs and others on the team knew at the time that the mcintosh would revolutionalize personal computing. >> we didn't want it just to be for in other words. that was all computer in other words. but we knew we were building something for everyone, for musicians, for artists, for people who would never
5:54 am
consider -- wouldn't want to interact with a computer if it wasn't graphicic user interface. and we knew we would affect millions of people's lives. >> reporter: now, bill will be speaking wednesday here at the museum, along with others who are on the mac team at the insanely great apple mac at 40, wednesday between 7:00 and 9:00. the event is sold out in person, but you can attend virtually to get tickets. and, also, i had a 25-minute conversation with bill and we post had on our website at nbcbayarea.com. if you're someone like me, who was a teenager when this thing came out, and i came from an ibm pc family and it's interesting to hear about the history. >> it's making us take a step back in time. i think it was '88 when i first got on a mac like that. so if you want to hear the live

stream event, you don't have to wait for the dial-up tone anymore, either. >> that's right, 64 bit mode um, is that what it was? >> that's pretty cool. >> thank you very much, bob. so let's talk about that weather, because it is going to be serious. >> when you think of the way the technology has advanced, even with weather forecasts. >> he used to put velcro numbers up there. now you have a fancy radar. >> we can tell you hour-by-hour what's going to happen now. we are seeing the first wave of rain that will be stretching closer to the bay area and moving inland as we go into today. starting out with light showers around the coastline and making its way into the east bay at around noon, and then the heavier stuff arriving between 4:00 and 5:00 this evening, right in time for the evening commute, as more people are going to be out and about. it's going to be very wet with pockets of heavier rain that
5:56 am
will be off and on into the evening. and a brief break overnight. we start out tomorrow with some scattered showers at 8:30, you see it mostly in parts of the south bay and the peninsula. then going into tomorrow evening with a wave of heavy rain. and then, again, it tapers off for sunday morning, and then ramping up again sunday night. so we do have a lot we're watching here, with a potential of some of that moisture tapping into an atmospheric river. and there could be anywhere from an inch and a half to 7 inches of rain possible, with the highest rainfall totals in the north bay and santa cruz mountains. all of this heavy rain could give us gusty winds and power issues, as well as rivers and street flooding possible. the flood watch will be in effect farther to the north. we're watching the russian river for the potential of flooding over the next few days. our weather stays active going into next week. several more waves of rain coming in. so we're going to see temperatures holding steady, but at times our rain will be moving in. we'll be tracking that.
