satellite storm ranger scanning skies. picking up on rain through the north ba coastal mountains of the peninsula and down through the south bay. more rain to come on the way. talking about a chance of seeing an atmospheric river, later tomorrow into monday. we are also talking about the possibility of seeing some gusty winds, flooding issues, and a possibility of landslides as well. a lot to cover in my full forecast in 15 minutes. i'll wait for you there. >> see you in 15. and bracing for storms preparing for the worst like this time last year. destroying homes, businesses and cars. 17th and folsom. on this corner flood barriers put up by the utility commission. line the buildings, because-ish did. >> terrible last year. >> reporter: it was that bad last year in this area. streets rivers and parking lots lakes. >> we were having a party and all our guests, like, really didn't want to come because they couldn't get past the front door. it came up to, like, right here. third stair. >> reporter: you can find sandbags sprinkled throughout the neighborhood, because it's costly for businesses like this restaurant on folsom and 18th. the floor is new because of last year's flooding. >> this is not good here. so every time, every time we close for the sandbags outside, because we don't know what it is. >> reporter: which is why city democrats like public works say crews are on standby for cases like big trees coming down. they've worked to trim trees all year round. this weekend -- >> good news, we don't expect too much wind, and really for

pg&e, wind causing outages during a storm. >> reporter: a soggy day about to get wetter in the next couple of days. gia vang, "today in the bay." people who live in east bay hills are preparing ahead of the expected deluge. strong winds and rain downed trees during last january's storms, causing prolonged power outages. this january some neighbors tell us they are on alert. >> interrupts our traffic flow sometimes. we always watch the hillside by the fire station, because that's been a place where there's been some -- it looks like it's eroding and we're worried how long that hillside's going to last. >> we spoke to a local arborist who is surprised he wa not seen an uptick in work calls ahead of the storms. of course, depending on amount of rain received and how wet the ground gets, he says there is a strong possibility of downed trees becoming a widespread issue once again.

two people shot at a b.a.r.t. station. it happened yesterday just before 4:00 p.m. in pittsburg. investigators tell us a man shot another man who is now in critical condition. another victim showed up in the hospital with a wounded leg and is in stable decision. b.a.r.t. officers closed the pittsburg station while investigating and transit came in to transport passengers. and next week emany state university campuses including several here in the bay area kwae. unless their professors take to the picket line. the california faculty association represents lectures, professors, counselors from 23 campuses. the union is calling for a system-wide five-day work stoppage beginning monday. the csu system offered faculty 5% raise each year for three

welcome back. we are under a microclimate weather alert. 7:12 on your saturday morning. cloudy skies and wet pavement there in downtown san jose. cinthia pimentel will be along to detail your microclimate forecast in just a few minutes. but first -- we now know the official cause of death for the man buried in an avalanche at palisades tahoe ski resort. 66-year-old kenneth kidd suffocated after being swept into the avalanche. the coroner told that to the "san francisco chronicle." kidd split time between point reyes and truckee. the deadly avalanche happened a week and a half ago. the slide triggered shortly

after the famed kt22 lift opened first time this season. three other skiers injured. all are expected to be okay. turning now to the grocery store. next time you go there you might notice the cost of eggs has gone up again because of an outbreak of the bird flu that started back in november, killing 14 million chickens. that shortage caused prices to rides by nearly 9% across the country. that spike stayed into the new year. economists say it's unclear when prices should stabilize. depends on getting a handle on the virus. two bay area school districts are facing civil rights investigations. nbc bay area learned they are oakland and san francisco unified. the office for civil rights is investigating title 6 violations. the agency tells us it does not comment on pending cases, but we know title 6 is specifically for

cases of religious or ethnic discrimination. it's worth noting the announce munt comes after several family is raised concerns about anti-semitism in oakland schools. an estimated 30 families reported transferring their children out of the oakland unified school district. nearly four years since the pandemic began, there are new covid guidelines for students in one bay area school district. san jose unified says students can now return to school after testing positive, if they don't have symptom tos. that student would be required to wear a mask ten days in class. if they do have symptoms the district wants students to stay home until they no longer have a fever. sjusc urging parents to report positive tests to continue to monitor the spread of the virus. the sharks are making a wish come true for one young fan. we want to introduce you to 12-year-old addison, known as

sissy. a diehard fan with a rare and painful disorder. a nonprofit group shared her story with the team and the sharks jumped into action. sissy and her family got custom merch. watched the team practice yesterday and had a chance to get on the ice. sissy's family tells us they almost can't believe it. >> just the whole trip in general. the opportunity for us. we're originally from here. moved to wisconsin about eight years ago, and this is actually one of our first times back to california. this surfirst trip back and an opportunity for us, like she said, being huge sharks fans. it's awesome. >> they'll be back at the s.a.t. center to see the sharks face the anaheim ducks today. plus we're told there are some other gifts in store for her like a ride on the zamboni. ♪ okay, okay ♪ okay ♪ okay, okay ♪♪

peaks in the bay area. before i get to anything else, people asking, will it rain for the 49ers game? it will, you bet. bring ponchos, safe shoes. you don't want to stand out there with soggy socks. seeing the breeze pick up at times. overall wet game but hoping for a 49er win. throughout date, a chance to step out before i get to 2:00, 3:00. things ramp up again. tracking this next batch's rain to that could get heavy going into sunday morning. then look at that. get another break here as we take it on through about the early afternoon hours, and then once again. kind of like a repeat cycle of on and off again showers. do not let your guard down. take it on into sunday evening, monday, this is where the atmospheric river comes in and a chance of seeing steady rainfall will bring up the rivers and creeks, the streams, even possibility of sees landslides taking it on to see how much

the rain. >> reporter: pete of oakland isn't taking chances with the incoming storm after his oakland hills neighborhood dealt with a various of issues during last winter's storms including power outages and downed trees. >> lost power. tens of trees down. pg&e took care of a lot of trees. hopefully that was, you know, hit the mark. >> reporter: the strong winds are always a concern in the hills with those winds leaving behind scenes like this last year in the area of trees falling into homes. toppling on to highways. neighbors are preparing are to the possibility of similar scenarios in the coming days. >> interrupts our traffic flow sometimes. we always watch the hillside by the fire station, because that's been a place where there's been some -- looks like it's eroding and we're worried how long that hillside's going to last. >> reporter: and zach, an arborist surprisingly hasn't seen uptick in job requests

last week in a wild card, sneaking into the post season seventh seed. the 49ers insider saying budding star love is leading the charge. >> the packers are on a roll. yeah, only 9-8 in the regular season. kind of, you know, figured out a way to get into the postseason. but they might be the hottest team out there right now. so this is a team that comes to levi stadium with a lot of confidence. >> reporter: and a lot of history. this is a game of rivals, niners and packers meet a record tenth time in nfl playoffs. one guy who knows this rivalry pretty well is former long-time 49ers tight end brent jones. might remember in the late '90s faced the packers three straight years in win or go home games. >> while there's respect, there's that, you know, friendly dislike of the packers, and i think they feel the same way about the 49ers, just because of years of battling for that same

we need a president our foreign adversaries are afraid of and our allies respect! >> south carolina senator tim scott endorsing former president donald trump last night instead of fellow south carolinian nikki haley. the senator and former president appeared together at a rally in new hampshire. senator scott dropped out of the race for the white house back in november. his endorsement comes four days before the new hampshire primary. and we are learning a long-awaited conversation between president joe biden and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu happened yesterday. it had been nearly a month since the two leaders had spoken directly. the biden administration has asked the israeli prime minister, however the relationship is showing signs of strain. this as netanyahu repeatedly ignored biden's calls for a palestinian sovereignty. biden says the conversation

included an effort to secure the release of all hostages held by hamas as well as ways to increase humanitarian aid for civilians while keeping military pressure on the militant group. back here in the u.s., thousands rallied in washington, d.c. for the march for life that happened yesterday when anti-abortion activists packed the national mall to listen to speeches, concerts and march past the u.s. capitol and the supreme court. the crowd crowd faced frigid temperatures and snow vowing to keep fighting until abortion is eliminated. the event is the second march for life since the supreme court overturned roe versus wade emergency that ruling ended the federal protection for abortion rights. and happening today, a big walk for life march happening in san francisco. it starts at 8:00 this morning with a vigil on bush street. the walk officially begins at 1:30 at sieve beic center plaza.

welcome back. to our "climate in crisis." if you live or work in san jose the city wants your input preparing to for a zero-waste city. one of the first to rethink its use of energy, water and land by engaging the people who live and work there. cinthia joins us again. you actually told me the city already has a climate plan? is this in addition to that? >> correct. so we already have a climate-smart san jose overarching plan to reduce carbon emissions. the new document adds a bit more to that, kira. specifically focusing reducing waste and finding alternatives to landfill. called zero waste element. a draft available online now. a goal help the city improve its waste reduction efforts through strategies focusing on food waste and composting, promoting rental and repair organizations
