ballots at the stroke of midnight >> this republican battle is now a two-person race after ron desantis dropped out the latest poll shows donald trump with a commanding 22-point advantage over haley that is actually up three points from yesterday's tracking poll >> we'll have complete coverage both in new hampshire and right here in studio 1a. let us start with hallie jackson in bedford, new hampshire. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda this is it it is happening. democracy in action with all of these early risers that have gotten up with these doors here opening literally in the last three minutes. people are turning out for what is a critical and big day in new hampshire. we'll take you inside so you can see it here. the town clerk tells us that the undeclared voters in this particular precinct have the edge as far as registration. and that's exactly the kind of voter that nikki haley has to win in what's seen as her last best chance to try to take on donald trump the first few ballots this

morning officially tallied in new hampshire, tiny dixville notch overnight, with six voters unanimously backing u.n. ambassador nikki haley, in a race down r now down to two candidates former president trump hoping for a show of gop force along former primary rivals. tim scott, doug burgum and vivek ramaswamy. ron desantis not on stage, but he has an open invitation, according to a trump campaign official after desantis dropped out of the race sunday and endorsed the former president, who is already looking ahead to the general election >> you are going to put crooked joe and his protectors on notice that we are coming in november. >> reporter: new polling shows him leading haley by 19 points here >> so what does a good night look like? >> i like wins i don't like when people say you're up by -- and if you win by 4,700, they say it's a gross failure. >> reporter: for haley today, pressure to prove she can stop or slow mr. trump's march to the

gop nomination in the one on one race her campaign has wanted this is not a coronation >> why should we assume, oh, this time we have to have biden and trump. that's not fair to the american people more people deserve to be able to vote. and i'm going to give them that option. >> reporter: she's campaigning with new hampshire's popular republican governor chris sununu to do well in this state, she has to win independents like gary and brenda, both turned off by mr. trump, but gary plans to vote for chris christie instead. >> i realize people tell me i'm wasting my vote, but i have to look at myself in the mirror >> reporter: brenda will write in president biden's name. but new this morning, fall-out over a robo kal pretending to be from president biden urging people not to vote today >> what a bunch of malarky. >> reporter: that sounds like joe biden, but it's not. the state's attorney general saying it appears to be artificially generated, calling it an attempt to suppress new hampshire voters the white house confirms that that call was indeed fake.

as for the republican race here, you can see it of course, the room is filling up in this precinct. the expectation that as many as 9,000 voters could end up here throughout the course of the day. it as always will come down to turnout. it's a political cliche for a reason it matters who shows up and who they end up backing. we will see if those undeclared voters show up for nikki haley or if donald trump maintains what we're seeing so far, which is that big polling lead, savannah. >> hallie jackson at the polling place. they're voting early but not often. just once. thank you. kristen welker, moderator of "meet the press" back from new hampshire is with along with steve kornacki good morning >> good morning. >> i do a lot of tracking polls in new hampshire we have one just in this morning. who has the momentum. >> look, donald trump in this daily tracking poll, they have done this every day since the iowa caucuses hit 60% in the final one. this is nbc 10 suffolk university 60 for trump. 38 for haley we have seen surprises in a few

past new hampshire primaries but of this scale to come down this margin and pull off a win, this would be a surprise for the ages if haley is able to pull this out today. >> new hampshire does sometimes surprise because of the large number of undeclared voters who can come in, not democrat voters but undeclared say i'll take a republican ballot and then they can vote nikki haley needs independents to come out in droves and go for her in a big, big way. >> exactly match that's the backbone of her strategy take a look at the breakdown we just showed you the poll. these are the republicans. these are the registered republicans. look at that lead trump has. 42 points over nikki haley then tin dependents, haley, 12 points ahead of trump in independents independents make up a bigger share in new hampshire than anywhere else. she has to get that number 65%, 70%, something like this and frankly among republicans, that number is too low it's got to tick up closer to 30 points it would take a gain of 20 here and a gain of about 5 here that could put her in the game

it's a very tall order but that's what it would take. >> she has a big time run the table here in new hampshire. and then what? because the map is not getting any easier for her even though the next primary about a month away is in her home state. trump outpolls her there as well >> you're absolutely right, san va that. look, this is the last stand for nikki haley. it's the last stand for the never trumpers effectively as well what would she need to do to go on to south carolina she would need to come in, i am told, with a single digit margin savannah, but look at these numbers that steve just laid out. they're just staggering. and the momentum, she just doesn't have it heading into tonight. >> do you think if she loses by a margin like that, a 20-plus -- do you think she just gets out of race or tries to hang on? >> i think it's almost impossible to justify staying in the race if she loses and if she loses by that large of a margin. savannah, i was in new hampshire. i was talking to her supporters. they feel frustrated because new hampshire is the place of

comebacks. don't forget bill clinton, john mccain, hillary clinton, they all came back in new hampshire. what was the difference? if you talk to nikkei hailey supporters, the difference is she has not been flooding the zone in the same way those candidates had been. in order to have the type of momentum to go into south carolina, her home state, where by the way, all the top officials endorsed trump, she really needs a big, big showing tonight. >> this could go both to you real quick if we have a general election specially start tomorrow, nikki haley gets out of the race, we're already here trump versus biden who does that benefit, what do the numbers show you, what does your analysis show you >> i would say that the democrats have already started the general election if they can argue it begins in earnest, that could help them with momentum, with making the case that we need to start galvanizing now. guess what's happening today, president biden, the vice

the worst of the storms prompting dozens of rescues. closing roads and some schools and this morning even new storm threats sweeping across the country. good time to bring in al to figure out where this is all headed. >> good morning, hoda. good morning to all of you you can see the storms moving out of the southwest we're going to be looking at heavy rain now making its way into parts of the southwest. this is just the beginning you can see right now ahead of that, we're looking at some icing conditions up through the upper midwest. heavy storms and showers and thunderstorms getting together in the southwest so we have an active storm track. a series of storms will be coming out of the southwest. add to that this massive plume of moisture coming up from the caribbean and the gulf and a parade of storms one right after the other through the weekend. we're talking especially down through the lower gulf and lower mississippi river valley, upwards of 10 inches or more of rain possible. in fact, we have a moderate flood risk stretching from central texas all the way on up into alabama because of all of

this heavy rain and the area already soaked to the north, we have icing possible from des moines all the way to augusta, maine. we'll be watching that very closely. and a light dusting of snow from milwaukee all the way to boston. guys >> all right, al, we'll check back to the middle east now where the u.s. has expanded strikes against the houthis. that iran-backed group in yemen responsible for on going attacks against commercial shipping in the red sea. and in gaza, more than 20 israeli soldiers have been killed in an attack there. nbc's raf sanchez joins us now with the latest from the region. raf, good morning. >> reporter: isavannah, good morning. this was the biggest wave of strikes in yemen in more than ten days it involved both u.s. and uk war planes and cruise missiles the question, though, will it actually be enough to stop houthi attacks on commercial ships? u.s. navy fighter jets leading a new wave against iranian-backed

houthi militants in yemen. the attacks targeting missiles radar sites and weapons depots, according to u.s. central command. it's the eighth time western forces have struck in yemen in response to months of houthi attacks in the red sea, which are threatening to hold up global shipping. the u.s. and the uk saying we will not hesitate to defend lives and the free flow of commerce but so far the strikes failing to deter the houthis, who say their attacks will continue until the war in gaza ends that doesn't look likely any time soon. israel's military saying this morning it's encircled the city of khan younis sending civilians palestinians fleeing further south in hope of safety. but israel also reeling from news 24 troops were killed in gaza yesterday its single bloodiest day of the war. prime minister netanyahu saying on behalf of our heroes, we will not stop fighting until total

victory. but two israeli officials tell nbc news they've offered hamas a two-month pause in the fighting in exchange for the release of the remaining hostages families of those hostages storming a parliamentary committee yesterday, demanding action from their government you will not sit here while our children die, this father shouts among the protesters, gil dickman, whose cousin caramel is still a hostage. if you could speak to her now, what would you tell her? >> i would say, i'm so sorry it took us such a long time i really want this to end. we all want this to end, but we're coming for you >> reporter: and every day just agony for those families in terms of the negotiations, despite that new proposal from israel, the two sides remain very far apart mediators in qatar saying

like, they're still lower than last year. gas prices $3.08 nationwide. but 20 some states have below 3 bucks a gallon there are things people feel, including their 401(k)s. that are starting to turn positive and people are feeling better about the economy >> still a couple different difficult spots. the housing market not so great. interest rates will be down to 6%, right? >> if you see mortgage rates start to fall below 6%, that could be some relief in the housing market the housing market is the only place in the economy that hasn't normalized yet right? you still have low number of home sales prices are still too high for first-time home buyers affordability is awful there if you, for example, had a mortgage rate that would dip to 5.75%, that would mean savings of just shy of 200 bucks a month on a new mortgage. that might be something that could help free up some money later this year. >> a lot of folks are saying, i will stay put because i have

this lovely 3% mortgage. is the fed expected to cut interest rates a lot of times mortgage rates follow >> exactly if the fed cuts interest rates later this year -- fed was raising interest rates because of inflation the feeling is inflation, while still too high, is starting to come under control i think that's why you're seeing this notable vibe shift. you talked about the consumer sentiment numbers. i haven't seen those numbers improve that quickly since the early '90s that was a very fast improvement. there is something happening in the psyche the psyche that's been fragile for american consumers people are feeling better about things we don't know how long it will last gas prices are a really big part of that, but certainly 401(k) values peak there. you can peak at your 401(k), america. >> you can look again. >> 2022 was terrible but all of that was made back >> go and buy some eggs. okay thank you. let's go to the nba now. and what a night for philadelphia 76ers center joel embiid the reigning mvp scoring a- embd

east simms road. there was a heavy presence, including s.w.a.t. teams. neighbors are telling us that this all started yesterday afternoon. it ended hours into the overnight hours. deputies so far are not revealing if arrests were made or if anyone was injured. the contra costa county sheriff's office so far is not commenting. some relief this morning for cal state students everywhere, thanks to a late-night deal. the planned five-day strike is over after just one day and before spring semester officially starts on some campuses. the union representing professors, librarians and other academic staff reached a tentative agreement that includes a 5% pay hike retroactive to last july and another 5% raise set to take effect this summer. the agreement includes safer workspaces and expanded parental leave. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking a dryer start to our day. >> and we are seeing it clearing out across much of the bay area. as we take a look at our temperatures and what to expect.

shooter heading to trial james and jennifer crumb by each face four counts of involuntary manslaughter, this after their son ethan shot and killed four of his classmates here in michigan at oxford high school back in 2021 today, the mom, heads to trial >> reporter: this morning, history unfolding in a michigan courtroom. jennifer crumbley, the mother of convicted school shooter ethan crumbley, starts trial her husband, james crumbley, also facing manslaughter charges will be tried separately in 2021, ethan crumbley opened fire at his suburban michigan high school, killing four students and injuring several others prosecutors say he used a semiautomatic handgun purchased by his dad as an early christmas gift, days before the shooting crumbley, 15 at the time, posting online, quote, just got my new beauty today. >> the terror that he caused in the state of michigan and in oxford is a true act of terrorism. >> reporter: prosecutors also

say there were warning signs days before the shooting when a teacher saw crumbley searching for ammunition online. his parents allegedly dismissed calls from the school at the time authorities say jennifer crumbley sent a text saying, quote, l.o.l., i'm not mad at you. you have to learn not to get caught and the day of the attack, a teacher discovering hand drawn images of a gunpointing at the words, the thoughts won't stop, help me. both parents were called to the school but prosecutors say they declined a request to take ethan home crumbley charged as an adult received a life sentence without parole last month. victims testified at his sentencing in december. >> justin told us he was in the bathroom with the shooter. the next text we got from him after was, quote unquote, i love you guys little did i know that would be my last text i ever received from justin. >> reporter: but in newly revealed court documents, crumbley is appealing the sentence and his attorneys now say he will be advised to resist testifying in his parent's

49ers. late last year a judge ruled property taxes be cut by $180 million over the remaining 20-plus years of the team's levi stadium lease. it amounts to a $6 million yearly payment instead of $12 million. the county assessor's office first sued in response to the 2019 appeal made by the 49ers to an independent board. this morning county assessor larry stone announced he will not challenge the ruling. we started out with clouds and we are going to have a chance to dry out today after all of the rain we had yesterday. we'll continue to see temperatures headed for the low 60s for today. it will be slightly cooler tomorrow as the rain returns, off-and-on showers throughout the day. and we'll see another break on thursday. we'll see mostly cloudy skies on friday into saturday and watching out for a chance of rain, but it looks like it will be mainly in the north bay. sunday is looking great with
