rescue in the east bay. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this wednesday. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off this morning. our top story, that rain just slopping all the way across the bay area. we do have team coverage, but we want to get a start with kari. the rain really expected to pick up later this morning. >> we are going to see more rain as we go into today, with another atmospheric river that's moving into the bay area. so we can see the long line of clouds, and also boosting that rainfall as it just waves up and down the coastline for today. and we're looking at some of the widespread rain with us, as of now we'll continue to see it streaming in. a few breaks here and there. as we get a closer look with stormranger, we can see pretty good coverage in marin county, lighter showers in san francisco. but it's also extending toward much of contra costa county this morning, with some of the pockets of heavier rain, and it's all the way up and down

880, as well as heading into the tri-valley, with some steady rain. it is getting a little lighter for parts of the peninsula from san mateo to mountain view, but we are going to see at times some of the heavier rain moving in throughout the next several hours, with a few pockets of some heavy rain. but mostly a light to moderate rain, as we continue into at least late morning. by the afternoon, it will start to taper off, so we're going to be watching this add up as we go into today. now, our team coverage continues. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. ginger, how are things looking out there? >> reporter: good morning, kari. just as you mentioned, things have kind of eased up. we're here at lake merced in san francisco and we've seen some light rain on and off this morning. nothing really problematic, so far at least. but still, you cannot take the rain and the water or its impact

for granted. take a look at this video. it is of a woman who attempted to drive across a rushing creek over in livermore, near livermore, after the waterway swept over a road, and her truck flipped over. she had no way out, no one heard her yelling for help through the night. she was able to get on top of the bottom of her truck. a camper found her. thanks to that camper, emergency responders were alerted, alameda county fire, and neighboring agencies came, as well as a chp rescue rel helicopter, who lowered a rescue technician to the woman. >> i don't know how she did it in the dark, the cold, the wetted, but she was able to do that, and she was very excited to see our san ramon valley fire rescue technician. >> reporter: understandably so,

very happy to see that rescue team. now, that woman was treated for hypothermia, but she is expected to make a full recovery. an incredible story, some really incredible video there, and a good reminder to not test the waters. so far, team coverage continues. we're going to check out how the roads are doing. those two don't get along well. turn around, don't drown. folks, look at this, this is emeryville on the eastshore freeway, westbound 80 as you travel toward the bay bridge and the berkeley curve. everything is moving smoothly. but coming into the area, after noticing the wet lens, the wet roadways, we're talking about a spinout. there was a traffic break approaching carlson over the last half hour because of a spinout. look at the green highlighting around the bay. slick roadways and perhaps some active rain in many spots. we have another crash over here in pacheco, just outside concord and pleasant hill.

through a dna hit in a public genealogy database. since the arrest, authorities have identified two more people who were allegedly sexually assaulted by martinez when they were children. well, the first in the nation primary has come and gone. former president donald trump is the projected winner over former u.n. ambassador nikki haley. let's take a closer look at those final results for you. well, trump picking up 54% of the vote, that adds 12 delegates to his total. meanwhile, haley finishing as a runner-up, garnering 43% support. that's going to add nine delegates to her overall total. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson is in new hampshire where trump is just adding his lead in the quest for the gop nomination. >> we will never forget you. >> reporter: former president trump defeating his lone republican rival in the new hampshire primary, moving him closer to a rematch with president biden. >> we've won almost every single poll in the last three months

against crooked joe biden, almost every poll. >> reporter: despite her granite state loss, former u.n. ambassador nikki haley contends the race for the republican nomination is far from over. >> we still have a ways to go, but we keep moving up. >> reporter: haley's campaign has vowed to stay put, at least through super tuesday in march when 16 states vote. i spoke with nbc news senior political editor, mark murray, about the rationale behind that. >> one can accrue delegates and see what happens several months from now, particularly as former president donald trump faces a lot of legal challenges. >> reporter: president biden beat his democratic challengers in new hampshire as a write-in candidate. during a campaign event tuesday, biden was heckled by protesters, including those calling for a cease-fire in gaza. he warned that domestic issues like abortion access are at stake in the november election. >> it was donald trump and his

tracking a soggy morning commute. you can see the raindrops on the lens, which usually means it's kind of blowing around, kari. >> we're seeing quite a bit of rain this morning for the commute, and that's the reason we're under that microclimate weather alert. we're expecting at least a half inch of rain for today. you can see how it has picked up and moved through the bay area over the past couple of hours, with a couple of breaks here and there. that's the nature of the rain that we typically see. stormranger continues to track this wet weather moving in, a lot of it in parts of the north bay. and we can see more of it off the coast that's going to be moving in over the next couple of hours into the east bay. so as we take a live look outside in walnut creek, a very sloppy morning commute, and it looks like the heavier rain continues through at least 8:00. then a few showers linger into the early afternoon. we'll be tracking that. there is a little bit more rain in the forecast as well. mike, you're tracking the sloppy conditions for drivers. >> absolutely. here is a live camera here in

san jose. we are looking at just a lot of water on the lens, and also on the roadway. nearby, a spinout, single-car crash reported, facing the wrong direction. they did clear that from 680 at the 280/101 interchange. everything is green, including the highlighting, which means wet roads. roadway conditions highlighted by green around the bay. we are looking at a smooth flow of traffic, with traffic flowing throughout the east bay and no major issues as we travel on the eastshore freeway, the earlier crash cleared. new this morning, all right, all right, all right, hey! this guy just announced an unusual stop in the bay area, and tickets go on sale in a matter of hours. do you know who we're talking about? ♪♪ >> andre 3000 has just announced

good wednesday morning. let's take a live look outside in san jose. as we continue this microclimate weather alert, a soggy morning, and it's 54 degrees. temperatures don't change much over the next few hours, but we will see waves of rain through at least late morning, and still a chance going into the afternoon. i'm tracking this for you and we're taking a look ahead to the weekend. more coming in a few minutes. even though traffic is light right now, some folks have more of a problem as they go at speed. the conditions are not great. look at the reflection over the water on the roadway. slick conditions. i'm seeing a lot of single-car crashes. it does indicate perhaps that traction might be a factor. good morning. very happy wednesday to you. the dow took a breather yesterday, but the s&p 500 hit yet another record, the nasdaq was up, likely will move higher again on results from netflix.

netflix, they're making a deal with pro wrestling. there's wwe stock, tko is how they do that. we'll talk about that in a second. first, more layoffs in the valley at ebay. ebay says it's cutting 1,000 jobs worldwide, about half of ebay employees are here in america. most of them on hamilton in san jose. ebay has told everyone to stay home today as they wait word for who gets cut and who stays. the ceo there saying our overall head count and expenses have outpaced the growth of our business. in other words, they've got too many people. lots of companies say they over-hired, wayfair, the online furniture company saying that very thing as it makes cuts. the ceo says, quote, we went overboard in hiring during a strong economic period.

>> a $5 billion deal starts in january of next year. until then, the show will be on usa network and peacock. netflix met with analysts and reporters yesterday afternoon and said it had its biggest subscriber growth since the pandemic. it's a huge win for netflix. tesla reports profits and speaks with reporters and analysts tonight. elon musk's behavior on these phone calls have been in the past unusual. so lots of investors print up literal bingo cards with things he might do or say. so here is the one that bloomberg. they've got something about crypto, be rude to an analyst, cut off a tesla exec, self-driving, that's an easy

one. but it is one of those sort of just cringe moments where he will sometimes take control of the call and get quite emotional. now, understand, he didn't create the company, but it's a very important company to him. but it is very strange compared to the conference calls you do with netflix or ebay or any of the others. >> i can't imagine. we have conference calls with our bosses and all hands and whatnot. i could not imagine our leader going bananas like that. makes a dignified comment, is kind to someone, talks about sustainable growth. oh, okay. >> the thing about it is looking at that and seeing what was on the card, i'm not surprised because i know people who know people who work there. right on. bingo! >> his investors is probably like, oh, my gosh. >> exactly. >> you bet. many of us, we've done it at

i was very popular. we are going to take a look at nbc bay area stormranger. you see it is high atop -- what is that, san bruno mountain? it is capturing all of that rain. kari, it is soggy out there. >> yes, it is. and it's been coming in waves. not everyone is seeing the rain at the same time, but we all pretty much have wet roads as you're driving to work this morning. and turning the windshield wipers off and on. we are going to continue to see the wet weather for the morning commute. the evening commute is looking a bit dryer. we, once again, are dealing with this for now. the steady stream of moisture coming in, we will see this round of weather on top of the already soggy ground we have, quickly creating some puddles and slick and sloppy conditions. a lot of the heavier rain still moving into the north bay, as we've been tracking the rain.

a closer look in marin county along the coastline and all the way over toward san rafael, as well as novato. so we are, once again, dealing with this. but also low visibility at times. so you do want to allow extra time to get to work. looking at the peninsula, once you get south of san mateo, we are seeing a break for now. once again, the roads may be wet from earlier rain that moved through. a look at our temperatures, we're headed for close to 60 degrees in a lot of spots, upper 50s for livermore, 57 for much of the north bay into the south county. tomorrow we are going to see a bit of some clearing and temperatures coming up a couple of degrees, and that will be the trend going into the next few days, with a gradual warm-up. looking hour-by-hour, 8:00, still quite a bit of rain. but starting to taper off by 10:00, into the early afternoon. there's still some green, there still will be a chance of rain at any point today, and it's going to be very hit or miss going into the afternoon into

the evening. still possibly some rain in the north bay, into san francisco. at 6:00 and even later tonight. and then the next round of rain affects parts of the north bay for tomorrow evening into early friday. so we're looking at an additional quarter to half inch of rainfall for today, and the next several days we still have this atmospheric river that's going to be close by. it looks like it lifts to the north and gives the bay area a break from the rain for at least the weekend. but it may be back for the middle of next week. the sierra expecting some light storm. a look at gilroy with our ten-day temperature trend, it is going to be warming up. looking forward to low to mid-70s by sunday into monday. mike, you need to focus on your driving this morning. >> i would never tell anybody not to focus on their driving, but right now things are pretty tough because the lighter traffic, but there's a lot of mist, drizzle. it's a little clearer over the last five minutes, but i saw a

well. but the most widespread rain is in the north bay. so as we take a look at the activity that we've seen over the past couple of hours, we are still seeing very soggy conditions continue as you get ready to head out for work or heading to school. and, once again, we can see the heaviest rain in marin county and it is a little bit lighter for napa and sonoma counties in morning. then we're looking at it moving toward the east bay with contra costa county getting in on some of the heaviest rain as it moves from concord to san ramon. a little lighter toward dublin, but it picks up again. our hour-by-hour forecast, showing rain in the forecast through at least noon, then we start to see it taper off with a chance of rain continuing even into the evening commute. i'll be typing out what to expect and look ahead to the weekend as well. mike, the slick roads are a factor as the commute kicks in.

"today in the bay"'s bob redell is live outside fremont high school in sunnyvale. so, bob, how seriously are authorities taking this threat?

>> reporter: kris and marcus, the fremont union high school district says that law enforcement told them they don't believe that this threat is credible, but out of, quote, an abundance of caution, officers from the san jose and sunnyvale police departments, along with deputies from the santa clara county sheriff's office, they will be patrolling these campuses later this morning when school starts around 8:30. yesterday the district sent out this letter to parents to indicate the district did receive an anonymous email threat late in the afternoon, that made a threat against fremont, homestead, linbrook and monta vista high schools. the district immediately reached out to law enforcement, who is trying to figure out who emailed these threats. again, the police and sheriff do not think the threat is credible, but they don't want to take any chances, hence the law enforcement presence on those campuses expected later today. reporting live outside fremont high school, bob redell, "today in the bay." it is 5:34 this morning.

a community coming together to mark one of its darkest days. ♪♪ >> mourners gathering last night in half moon bay to remember the victims in the shooting rampage exactly one year ago. seven people died in that shooting. some of those who gathered last night still work at two of the mushroom farms where the tragedy unfolded. to honor the victims, one nonprofit that helps peninsula farmworkers unveiled a new art piece. the founders say half moon bay is forever changed by what happened there. >> we cannot forget what has happened to our farmworker community. >> meanwhile, the shooting suspect back in court yesterday. he did not enter a plea to a new set of murder charges entered last week by a grand jury. and happening today, state attorney general rob bonta will argue in a federal court to preserve the state's ban on

assault weapons. it follows a roundtable discussion in sacramento yesterday addressing gun violence. last year's half moon bay shooting rampage was front and center. bon ta wants to push for work to help save lives and reaffirmed his confidence california is making strides in curbing gun violence. also in the south bay today, nine suspects tied to what prosecutors claim is one of the largest sex trafficking busts in state history are scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing. last year authorities arrested six men and three women. more suspects are still at large. prosecutors say nearly 20 women were rescued in the ring which operated in low budget hotels stretching between hayward and gilroy. in oakland the antihuman trafficking team inside alameda county's district attorney's office is organizing a public safety march. the walk starts at 2:00 in the afternoon at 17th avenue and international boulevard.

it will end nearby at san antonio park where organizers will host a rally and resource fair. a follow-up for you this morning on a recent shooting at an east bay b.a.r.t. station. it happened last friday in pittsburg. yesterday police arrested a 17-year-old suspect. b.a.r.t. says that one of the two victims is still in critical condition. the other was shot in the leg. police arrested a boy in walnut creek. so far, there's no word of a motive, but investigators believe that shooting was not random. new this morning, the ceo of alaska airlines is speaking exclusively to nbc news. this is about the recent midair blowout of a sealed door panel, and it comes ahead of his meeting today with u.s. senators. that panel blew out on the boeing 737 max 9 plane flying from portland to southern california. now the entire fleet of planes remain grounded and the ceo is furious with boeing following

the airline's internal findings. >> we found discrepancies on many of our airplanes. >> meaning loose bolts? >> loose bolts, it could be a missing cotter pin. >> have you conveyed your disappointment, your anger, to boeing's top leadership about this? >> i'm more than frustrated and disappointed. i'm angry. it happened to alaska airlines, our guests, our people. >> united airlines teams also found issues with other max 9 planes. it now is considering buying new airbus planes and canceling an upcoming order with boeing for the max 10 jets. boeing plans to pause production for one day tomorrow so it's workers can refocus on safety and standards. you can watch that entire story later this morning on the "today" show. that's at 7:00 right after us here on "today in the bay." new details this morning on high-speed rail project on the fast track to connect las vegas with southern california. the white house approving another massive round of private funding. the transportation department

has approved a $2.5 billion bond money for the new line on top of $3 billion in funding announced last month. once completed, trains will transport riders between los angeles and sin city in about two hours. right now the total tab for the project is estimated to be about $12 billion, and it's expected to open in 2028. it is 5:38 right now. we're taking a live look and you can see one of our photographers there driving through san francisco. certainly a soggy start to our morning. meteorologist kari hall, of course, monitoring what we can expect from that rain. you said it's going to come in waves today, right? >> yeah, it's going to be off and on. we are seeing it now on for dublin as we take a live look outside at this camera, where it is a very sloppy commute for 580 drivers. and this is the part of the atmospheric river where we are seeing thunderstorms off the coast and only a very slight chance that some of that could make it in. but we are seeing the rain picking up for marin county and the chance of lightning that is

off the coast moving in over the next couple of hours. but not as much in the way of heavy rain for parts of the peninsula. when we take a look at castro valley and what to expect today, we're seeing temperatures holding steady in the 50s and then rain off and on, even into the evening, with a chance of rain continuing. so our hour-by-hour forecast does show some spotty showers into the day, as well as the evening commute. and then tapering off early tomorrow morning. i'll have more on the weekend forecast. mike, you have a couple of notes for the golden gate bridge. >> coming into the city we're seeing a build for volume and we see slick roadways. be cautious out there. as kari talked about, more rain coming through, heading toward the east bay, contra costa county. now, northbound i just saw the zipper truck moving as well, so there is another fact that will slow you a bit as you're heading out of the city. they typically have one lane blocked as the crew hits the center divide. the bay bridge toll plaza starting to see a slowdown. the metering lights are active and you look at the water

good wednesday morning. the time is 5:44. let's head to martinez with a look at what to expect. it's in the low 50s now and not much of a warm-up throughout the morning. we see the rain coming off and on throughout the day, and even into this afternoon. so i'll be tracking that for you. we'll take a look ahead to the weekend coming up in a few minutes. over here in san jose, happening right now, the buildup, the slowdown, and some more wet roadways. here is san jose, looking at the droplets on the lens. more cars just stacked up. looks like they're moving again. i'll check it out coming up. president joe biden's administration is demanding texas attorney general allow immigration agents full access to the key entry point for migrants along the rio grande.

now, the dispute centers over a park in eagle pass. this is a border town where texas state authorities have been making arrests for months. that's according to a letter recently obtained by nbc news. so this week the supreme court granted a white house emergency request to cut and remove razor wire put in place by texas authorities. breaking news just into our newsroom, russia is now accusing ukraine of shooting down a military transport plane. we are learning all 74 people on board, including 65 ukrainian prisoners of war, were killed. the flight was on its way to the southern region when it came down. nbc news could not independently verify who was on the flight or what the cause of the crash was. to decision 2024 now, and former president donald trump

new hampshire state organization. a democrat needs delegates, california supplies 47. we vote march 5th. can we say november will be a biden/trump matchup for sure? no. a lot can happen, and we don't call these sorts of things before they're over, and no one should. but if everything is normal, a sitting president gets his party's nomination with very rare exception, and trump's polling shows he will continue to win republican delegates. updating you on the various court cases, the second e. jean carroll case has been delayed again until tomorrow. a previous jury found trump culpable of sexual abuse and defamation. this jury is just deciding further fines or punishment. donald trump lost his appeal over a gag order in a washington court. the federal judge there barred him from verbally attacking witnesses and court staff. and russian president vladimir

putin has ordered his staff to look into reclaiming former russian territory, obviously ukraine. historical russia, he calls it. an official at the u.s. state department was asked about it yesterday, and whether that includes alaska, to which the spokesman said, well, obviously he's not getting it back. >> what is happening? 5:49 now. and new this morning a businesswoman caught in san francisco's public works corruption scandal now reached a settlement to pay the city $750,000. the city attorney says florence kong and three former companies will pay the settlement to funneling contracts to the former public works director now serving a seven-year business sentence. she pleaded got to bribery and lying to the fbi. she is prohibited from doing business with the city for several years. the settlement must now be approved by the supervisors.

we've seen it coming in waves. there are some spots where it's not raining at all, but it has rained. still, there's some puddles on the roadways. as we take a look across all of our microclimates and our temperatures now in the low 50s, not much of a wind with this system. we are just going to see the rain coming off and on over the next couple of hours. but it is connecting with moisture all the way from hawaii, so that would classify this as an atmospheric river, and we are seeing that helping to boost the amount of rainfall and energy that we are seeing with this storm that's moving in. we've even had a couple of lightning strikes off the coast of marin county. so far, haven't seen any in the bay area. we'll continue to monitor for that. it has really picked up for marin county as we track it with stormranger. we're seeing a lot of yellows and reds indicating heavier rain that's pushing into parts of the east bay. a lot of contra costa county dealing with some heavy rain right now. this is going to really complicate that drive on 680

coming from concord to san ramon, and also that rain extends over toward discovery bay. so expect at times heavy rain, and in other areas we see breaks here and there. going into the afternoon, much more of a break. there's still a chance of rain. some spotty showers will be possible, even into tonight before we see it completely clearing out. and then heading into thursday night, there may be another quick wave of some light rain moving into the north bay, but not expecting any major impacts. so we're looking at an additional quarter to half inch of rainfall, with some of the higher rainfall totals near the coastline. and then looking ahead to the weekend, saturday, the north bay will be the main focus for the potential of more scattered showers as the atmospheric river lifts to the north. and then it continues to lift away from the bay area for sunday into monday. but we may see some more rain coming back for the middle of next week. so we are going to continue with an active weather pattern, but

thankfully we do get breaks where it allows some of the water to soak into the ground. we get a chance to clean up and enjoy sunshine. that's what we'll see in time for the 49ers game on sunday. looking beautiful. highs in the low 70s and also sunshine and 70s for early next week. in san francisco, we are going to see temperatures slightly cooler, but overall we're seeing the same weather across the bay area. mike is checking in to see if san jose is moving a little better. >> last time we took a look, it looked like there were a couple of vehicles that weren't moving for a couple of seconds. the first burst looks like it's already wrapping up. it's slicker roadways. now we have that green highlighting moving out of the area. damp roadways, maybe slicker, and a slow drive right here for that portion of 101. 87, 85 and 280 doing okay. yesterday we saw them kick in with more slowing in 20 minutes from now. we have a lighter build throughout the tri-valley, southbound 680 showing a little

slowing toward sunol. 84 shows more traffic. 880 showing a little more off the castro valley y and through san leandro and hayward. a build for the eastshore freeway, pretty traditional for the timing. kari talked about that rain pushing through for concord and towards walnut creek, that direction. there is a build and there's a little more slowing there as well. conditions out there, the bay bridge, we had the metering lights turned on their regular time. we're just starting to see consistent backup for a couple of lanes. really, the big factor is the water kicking up behind the vehicles as they travel through that area and also across the richmond bridge as well as the volume builds. back to you. >> thanks, mike. happening now, a popular south bay street will be shut down for good. san jose city council voting to keep san pedro street as pedestrian only. this will be san jose's first permanent pedestrian mall in 52 years. the downtown street has been closed to cars since the pandemic as a way to offer safer
