what comes next. an emotional night expected at chase center tonight t. warriors return to the court. the emotional tribute they're planning to honor their late coach. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this wednesday. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia has the morning off. we want to get right to the top story, we'll get to the rain picking up at this hour. we have team coverage as the storm moves across the bay area. let's go first to meteorologist kari hall. >> we are starting out with waves of rain, as we're going to continue to see the heaviest rain now moving through marin county. that maybe shifting toward the east bay as well. we see now the bright yellows and reds. it has really picked up for san rafael, and moving toward richmond as well. you'll see the intensity of the rain picking up in the next few minutes. and it is pouring in danville,

between danville and concord it is most likely a very slippery and dangerous commute this morning. a little bit of a break for hayward, as well as dublin, as we're seeing the rain taper off for livermore. we will once again see this off and on throughout the morning, into the early afternoon. but much less rain as we go throughout the day. there still will be a chance -- here we are at 6:30 this evening and we're seeing at least spotty showers here and there. eventually this will begin to wind down tonight, and then we'll be watching out for more rain ahead as we go into the next couple of days. we're for the most part looking at about a quarter to half inch of rain. this is coming on ground that is already saturated, so we may see issues with street flooding or creeks and rivers rising a little more today. and our team coverage continues with "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab live in san francisco. ginger, how are things looking out there? it's a little different this

time around versus the last hour where it was not raining. there are very light rain, and now just as your forecast predicted, the rain did come down about 20, 15 minutes ago here in san francisco. it does seem like it just started to let up, once again. like you said, pockets of rain. nothing too problematic we're seeing so far. we are seeing several people starting their day, still walking their dogs and getting to the gym. but it is a wet start now at this point to san francisco's morning. let's take a look at another part of the city, where you're taking a look at some live video over on the other side of san francisco, by fisherman's wharf. our photographer is headed to the fort mason area, giving us a look at how soggy this wednesday morning is starting out here in san francisco. now, no matter how light or heavy the rain is, you really can't take for granted the impact of the rain.

we want to head over to some video out of livermore. this is something that happened, a woman who attempted to drive across a rushing creek. after the waterway swept over a road. her truck flipped over, she had no way out, no one heard her yelling for help through the night. she was able to get on top of the bottom of her truck and remain there until a camper found her. now, thanks to that camper, emergency responders were alerted, alameda county fire and other neighboring agencies came, as well as the chp rescue helicopter, who lowered a rescue technician to the woman and helped her get on a harness. >> i don't know how she did it in the dark and the cold, the wet, but she was able to do that. she was very excited to see our san ramon valley fire rescue

technician. >> reporter: as you can imagine, such a sigh of relief for that woman to see rescue teams, as she is being treated for hypothermia. she is expected to make a full recovery. her story, that video there serving as a reminder not to test the waters as we continue to kind of get this wet and soggy weather today and throughout the rest of the week. let's head over to mike to take a look at the roads. >> as you say, the conditions change. testing the waters when you're driving and talking about moving water, sometimes also called tempting fate. don't do that. the golden gate bridge shows you the sloppy conditions as the rain comes down. it may not be a furious downpour, but it is affecting the traction and your visibility. kari showed waves coming through. we still have this green highlighting, the bulk of our commute through the north bay, contra costa county. we see continued slowing down the eastshore freeway. building over here through concord, pleasanton -- pleasant hill, i should say, and walnut creek. now slowing for 24 through

"today in the bay"'s brie jackson joining us live from new hampshire this morning. brie, the outcome here, no big

surprise. but what were the big takeaways from last night's results? >> reporter: good morning, marcus. that's right, no big surprise here. but the big takeaway is that former president trump is much closer to sealing the deal when it comes to the republican nomination. but his main rival here, nikki haley, she's not backing down. she says she is staying put. let's take a look at those results from last night. trump picking up 54% of the vote. that adds 12 delegates to his total. meanwhile, haley finishing as runner-up, garnering 43% support. that adds nine delegates to her overall total. >> what was the response to last night's results? >> reporter: so former president trump is acknowledging that he is one step closer to a much anticipated rematch with former president trump, while nikki

haley seems undeterred from her goal of trying to secure the gop nomination. >> we've won almost every single poll in the last few months against crooked joe biden. >> reporter: haley could continue to gather delegates. >> new hampshire has come and gone but it's not over for both of these candidates here. what's next for them? >> reporter: it seems that both republicans and democrats have their sights set on north carolina. that's where the next primary will be held next month. and california voters will have to wait until march for super

tuesday to cast their primary votes, and that will be held on march 5th. >> brie jackson in new hampshire for us, brie, thank you. switching gears a bit this morning. the warriors tonight take the next step in what is no doubt a very emotional process. they return to the court for the first time since the death of a popular assistant coach. milojevic died last week after suffering a heart attack. the team is planning to hold an in-game tribute and also planning to wear a jersey patch for the rest of the season to honor their coach with the same logo painted on the court. 6:09 this morning. we take a live look out at the bay bridge toll plaza. kind of empty there this morning. we are under that microclimate weather alert, tracking soggy morning commute for you this morning. meteorologist kari hall, of course, monitoring what's causing all of the issues there

on the roadway. >> yeah, another atmospheric river, marcus. we are seeing that now on the radar as we can see it really picking up in marin county with stormranger, our mobile doppler radar. it's increased the intensity in san francisco, with a lot of yellows and reds, showing the heaviest rainfall on 101 from novato into san francisco. we've seen a steady rain over contra costa county, some pockets of heavy rain. every now and then it lightens up and picks up again. we've seen it basically taking a break in other parts of the bay area. a live look in san francisco right now, you can see the low clouds and the rain, and that chance of showers will continue even into the evening, with some breaks in between. so i'll be tracking this and looking ahead to the weekend. mike, you've been watching the impact of this rain on the roads. >> the rain means wet roads and lower traction, lower visibility, because cars are

morning commute. we are going to see in morgan hill the rain lingering through 9:00, but still a chance continuing into the afternoon. off and on rain for today, but a little bit more of a break tomorrow. more on that coming up in a few minutes. right here, the bay bridge toll plaza, taillights traveling through the berkeley curve. a smooth drive. you see the rain on the lens, on the roadway. more traffic, slicker roadways, and metering lights. we'll show you what's shaping up heading into and out of san francisco coming up. good morning. very happy wednesday to you. the dow took a breather yesterday, but the s&p 500 hit yet another record. the nasdaq is up, and likely will move higher on results from netflix. netflix is making a deal with pro wrestling. this is wwe stock, they trade as tko. we'll talk more about that in a second. first, more layoffs in the valley, this time at ebay. ebay says it's cutting 1,000

jobs worldwide, about half of ebay employees here in america. most of them on hamilton road in san jose. they've got about 11,000 employees. they're cutting 1,000. ebay has told everyone to stay at home as they wait word for who gets cut and who stays. the ceo saying our overall head count and expenses have outpaced the growth of our business. in other words, they've got too many people. a lot of companies are saying they over-hired. wayfair, the online furniture company saying that very same thing as it makes cuts. the ceo says, we went overboard in hiring during a strong economic period. that's wwe raw, which, by the way, is coming to oakland next month. netflix has penned a deal with pro wrestling to run its popular tv show "raw" on netflix. it's a $5 billion deal that starts in the end of january of next year. until then, the show which is

the most popular on cable or close to it, will be on usa network and peacock. netflix, by the way, met with analysts and reporters yesterday afternoon, said it had the biggest subscriber growth since the pandemic. it's a huge win for netflix. tesla reports its profits and speaks with reporters and analysts tonight. elon musk's behavior on these phone calls has sometimes been so unusual investors sometimes print up actual bingo cards with things he might do or say. this is from bloomberg, their example of one. he might say something about crypto. that's an easy one. be rude to an analyst, that has happened. cut off a tesla exec. that has happened. self-driving, that's easy. you'll get a space on that as well. it was about 2018 where he really started to be very unusual in these calls, saying that some of the questions were boring and just saying next question, which is when you're an analyst or a reporter on a

comedy in pleasanton at a theatre. it may be near that on main street. i'm going to check that out. >> you were the inspiration. >> oh, yes, yes. >> much ado about mike. >> oh, wow, something new. remember that when you enter the restaurant. much adieu about weather today. >> there's no watches, warnings or advisories in effect, so as of now we're not flooding. that's a good thing. it is a sloppy commute. we're taking a live look in oakland, some of those interstates are really wet. and you're dealing with that for the most part in marin county and san francisco right now, where stormranger is showing the heaviest rainfall picking up, as we're seeing a lot of bright colors just south of novato. it's moving into san francisco and extending across the bay toward richmond, with heavy rain there. and it's been pretty steady for much of contra costa county, and moving into northern alameda

county as well. hayward seeing a steady rainfall. but it is getting lighter for dublin and we've seen it off and on in livermore. and this will be what we can expect throughout today. even here at 1:30 this afternoon, there's still some lingering showers, and it's going to be hit or miss going into the rest of today. even into this evening. we do get a break tomorrow, but we'll still be watching the north bay for a slight chance of rain. our additional rainfall totals, what we're expecting on top of what we've already measured, anywhere from about a quarter to half inch of rain. looks like san francisco could see the most of that. and i do think we'll see more in mill valley. looking at the sierra snowpack, that has been still fairly low. we've only made it up to about half of what we normally see for this date. and unfortunately, as typical with el nino systems, it is very warm. so a lot of what we see is coming down as rain. there's an additional 5 to 12 inches of snow over the next

week. so this is not nearly enough. but we are still in an active weather pattern. as we go into the weekend, early next week, the storm track lifts to the north of us. that will give us a break until the middle of next week when the rain will be returning. and slight rain chances in the forecast between friday and saturday. the focus will be the north bay. and then looking dry for all of us on sunday, which of course is very important for that 49ers game. it looks beautiful. and we also have a slight warm-up in san francisco, highs in the mid-60s. mike, you're starting out with conditions in the east bay. >> yeah, we know we're going to have a backup at the bay bridge. the bulk of this just showed up over the last five or six minutes. all lanes filled in. hov, big advantage. the over-crossing is starting to show a little slowing. you've got to slow because of conditions, see the water kicking up behind the vehicles? that will get on the windshield, so if your car is following closely behind another, first of all, give more stopping distance

and stop gradually, and you'll get that on your windshield. the east bay shows a slower drive down the eastshore freeway. coming through the north bay, a lot more puddling and ponding. be careful. the state of tobacco. next, what california is going curbing cigarette use and who the american lung association is

welcome back. well, just into our newsroom, the american lung association's 2024 state of tobacco control report is out, and it slams president joe biden's administration for its lack of action. now, the association says it is unacceptable that after decades of research tobacco is still the leading cause of preventable deaths in the u.s. 480,000 people die every year because of tobacco use. the report said the white house failed by not finalizing rules to end menthol and flavored cigarette sales last year. in the report, the group grades each state on five areas that have proven to prevent and reduce tobacco use and save lives. california among the best scoring states, while alabama and georgia are among the worst. here is my favorite story of the day. digital downloads are booming at our bay area public library. last year san francisco's public library had the most digital checkouts in the bay area at 3

million. santa clara county public library had 2 million. and tied at a 1 million, san jose public library and the county systems for alameda, contra costa county and sonoma, along with the peninsula library systems, according to overdrive which helps libraries manage online catalogs. librarians say people aren't just checking out books. >> it's books, audio books, there's music, movies, and we also have a lot of online learning platforms or resources that people can also use, like abc mouse, linkedin learning, language learning resources as well that are all available to people absolutely free. >> were you among the people checking out the top picks? verity was the top e-book in 2023, fourth wing was the top audio book, and top comic or graphic novel was big nate: release the hounds.

garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we have team coverage, including a look at that soggy situation outside and the morning commute. we want to get right to meteorologist kari hall because, kari, you are covering everything we can expect today. the rain is in and out throughout the day. >> we are going to see more waves of it and we're seeing it picking up in parts of the north bay and san francisco. the long connection of clouds and moisture streaming in from hawaii. it is another atmospheric river affecting us. we're seeing the lightning and storms off the coast, but notice all of the yellows, oranges and reds in san francisco, as the moisture continues to move in, with pockets of heavy rain. marin county from san rafael, on southward, the 101 drive is very slick, as well as a lot of the heavy rain moving over toward oakland, as well as richmond, and it's been off and on for concord. antioch taking a break, but there will be more rain coming in. and as we go into today, still a chance of showers will continue, even at 3:30 we're still seeing some off and on light rain, but

there will be more breaks than what we're seeing right now. mike, you were saying there was something going on out of berkeley. >> you talk about the rain coming through, and we had a crash reported eastshore freeway, westbound 80. the headlights coming toward us, on the approach, out of berkeley and into emeryville. i haven't seen any disruptions or traffic breaks. this is a build and at least we're showing the changing conditions. we'll get you a better location. i have a feeling it may be closer to the bay bridge. we do have the green highlights, slick roadways around, the rain coming toward the east bay from the north bay. anywhere south of the san mateo bridge, we're looking a little better. back to you. well, look, team coverage continues this morning. >> we want to get right to the sloppiness of it all. you want to get the rain coats out, get that waterproof stuff that you've got in your closet. the rain has not really let up since 6:00. kari's forecast right on point. you're seeing people still starting their day, starting kind of their morning commute, driving down the roads here. but the same is true here in the southwestern part of san francisco, as it is in other parts of the city. i'm going to give you a live look at another part of the city in the mission district. we've got our photographer, jessie, there giving us a look of mission streets. it's an area that typically sees pooling and flooding. as you can see, the roads are wet and slippery. kris, you said it well, soggy and sloppy so far. so if you do start to see that pooling and it looks suspect, don't test it. keep it on the safer side rather

nervous. an online threat has higher security at four bay area high schools. bob redell is following that story for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. the fremont union high school district says that this anonymous email threat they received yesterday, they fortunately do not think it is credible, at least according to what they heard from law enforcement. but out of, quote, an abundance of caution, officers from san jose and sunnyvale police departments, along with deputies from the santa clara county sheriff's office, they will be patrolling four high schools here in the south bay, including fremont high behind me here in sunnyvale. yesterday the district sent out this letter to parents to indicate the district received an anonymous email threat late in the afternoon that made threats against fremont, homestead, linbrook and monta vista high schools. the school district immediately reached out to law enforcement who is trying to find out who emailed these threats. the police and sheriff do not think this threat is credible,

but do not want to take chances, hence the law enforcement presence expected on the campuses later today. reporting live outside fremont high school in sunnyvale, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. new this morning, the ceo of alaska airlines is speaking exclusively to nbc news. this is about the recent midair flight blowout of the sealed door panel. that panel blowing out on a boeing 737 max 9 plane flying from portland to southern california. now the entire fleet of planes remain grounded and the ceo is furious with boeing following the airline's internal findings. >> we found discrepancies on many of our planes. >> meaning loose bolts? >> it could be a missing cotter pin. >> have you conveyed your disappointment, your anger to boeing's top leadership about this? >> i'm more than frustrated and disappointed. i am angry.

this happened to alaska airlines, our guests, our people. >> united airlines teams also found issues with other max 9 planes. it is now considering buying new airbus planes and canceling the upcoming order with boeing for the max 10 jets. the boeing ceo meets today with the u.s. senators, and tomorrow the company will pause production all day and its workers will refocus on safety and standards. you can watch that entire interview later this morning on the "today" show. that's at 7:00 right after us here on "today in the bay." 6:38 now, and let's take a live look outside on the streets of san francisco. the dash cam of our photographer, jessie landers. you can see soggy conditions as the rain is moving across the bay area, making for a rather slow morning commute, we'll call it. >> yeah, you should definitely slow down. that should be the story for you this morning, as you head out. even if it's not actively raining where you are, we are still seeing puddles and wet

conditions on the roadways. you can see the rain coming down on the oakland camera, not as much in walnut creek. and we've also seen the rain tapering off a bit for san jose. overall temperatures are starting out about the same, with some low 50s. and we've really seen the intensity of the rain pick up in the last 30 minutes for marin county into san francisco. that will be spreading down the peninsula and into the east bay, as we are going to see a lot of the wet weather hitting us over the next couple of hours. by 11:00, we're seeing some of it taper off. there's still some green here. there will be some rain that will be in and around the area, even into the evening commute. and eventually this will be ending for us late tonight into early tomorrow morning. so i'll talk about the impacts of that. mike, you found that that crash was near the bay bridge. >> the person who called it in was probably confused about why they are. this area is called the maze. it is northbound 880 at eastbound 880, passing by the

honda civic, back on its wheels. i think they're going to start letting vehicles through once again. this will be slow counter-commute, heading from oakland through berkeley. we'll track that coming up. it is 6:43 now. breaking overnight, russia is accusing ukraine of shooting down a military transport plane and there's new video just coming in showing the moment when that plane went down. we have to tell you, this might be disturbing to you. we are learning that all 74 people on board, including 65 ukrainian prisoners of war, were killed. the flight was on its way to the southern region ahead of a prisoner exchange at the border when it came down. nbc news could not independently verify who was on board that flight, nor what caused it to crash. now to decision 2024, former president donald trump coming out ahead last night in new hampshire's republican primary.

state organization. but he won anyway. a democrat needs about 1900 delegates to win that party's nomination. new hampshire supplies 33. california supplies 497. we vote on march 5th. now, can we say november will be a biden/trump matchup like it was last time? no. a lot can happen. and we don't call these things ahead of time before they're over, and nobody should. but if everything is normal, a sitting president does get his party's nomination with very rare exceptions, and trump's polling shows he will continue to win republican delegates. updating you on various court cases, the second e. jean carroll case has been delayed until tomorrow. a previous jury found trump culpable ofual abuse and defamation. this jury is just deciding further fines or punishment. donald trump lost his appeal over a gag order in a washington

court. the federal judge there barred him from verbally attacking witnesses and court staff. and russian president vladimir putin has ordered his staff to look into reclaiming former russian territory. obviously ukraine, historical russia, he calls it. an official at the u.s. state department was asked about this yesterday, and whether that includes alaska, to which the spokesman said, well, obviously he's not getting it back. >> i agree with that. i have nothing to do with it, but i agree with that. thanks so much. it is 6:48 right now. and it's time to talk about those new details on a new round of funding for the high-speed rail project connecting sin city to southern california. well, the transportation department has just announced $2.5 billion worth of bond money for the new line, that's on top of the $3 billion in funding announced last month. when the $12 billion project is

we're seeing rain for now, but it's going to move out in time for the game on sunday. and it is such a sloppy commute. take a live look at the san mateo bridge, where the cars are moving very slowly and the cars in front of you are kicking up water and moving over those puddles. where we are seeing the heaviest rain, over marin county, san francisco, toward the bay, and moving into the east bay. you can see the motion of this rain as it's moving in. so if you're in an area where you are seeing some very bright colors on your radar as you're tracking it at home on your smartphone, if it's just to the west of you, it's coming in your direction. so san rafael, heavy rain, moving toward richmond. and as you look off toward the east in spots like concord, it's going to pick up once again. taking a look at the heavier rain over the east bay from hayward to oakland, we're going to see this off and on, and the worst of it is hitting us now. and then we'll start to see it tapering off by late morning. but notice that even as we go into the afternoon, there's still some green, spotty showers

that will be affecting us going into the day. even the evening commute, some of us may encounter some rain. we're not going to be completely dry until tomorrow when we do catch a break from the afternoon. so additional rainfall totals could reach anywhere from a quarter to possibly three-quarters of an inch of rain, just depending on where the heaviest rain will be moving through. and this active storm pattern will continue. the good thing about this weekend is that even though we are seeing some rain saturday, the atmospheric river basically waves back to the north. so we're going to get a break and then it comes back for the middle of next week. so we do have more rain ahead. we also have will some breaks and a chance to let the heavy rain soak into the ground. looking at when we are dry, it's tomorrow, as well as sunday into monday, and look at how warm it will be. the temperatures in the low 70s. a nice little break from the winter. a taste of spring as we get sunshine into early next week. mike, you've been watching the sloppy road conditions and

crashes popping up. >> exactly. one of the crashes looks like it's cleared off of 580. the other one on eastbound 80, just north of the berkeley curve, it looks like the vehicle is back on its wheels. the traffic break has been cleared. we have slowing from downtown oakland toward the bay bridge. so watch specifically around 7th. we see more flashing lights trying to clear the area. i'll send it on x if there's any more big drama. hopefully that means things will start to improve counter-commute. slick roadways, lower those speeds. anywhere south of the san mateo bridge, things look calmer. back to you. happening right now, a popular south bay street will be shut down for good. city council voted to keep san pedro street as pedestrian only. it will be the first pedestrian mall in 52 years. the downtown street was closed to cars during the pandemic as a way to offer safer and more spaced-out outdoor dining option
