the this is "today in the bay" a very good thursday morning to you. it is 5:00 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we will get a look at the commute coming up later for you this morning, but we want to talk about the forecast for you. meteorologist carey collins has been tracking what to expect. some days it rains, some days it doesn't. what do we get today? >> it is a much-needed break from the rain, and mainly the north bay we will watch for a chance of showers but right now it is dry across the bay area. we are seeing temperatures right at about 50 degrees and partly to mostly cloudy skies to start. here is a look at where we are headed for today. a high of 62 in hayward and 59 in napa. also 59 in san francisco and we'll see temperatures in low 60s for the south bay. tomorrow for most of us will be a break from the rain, and this is when the temperatures start to trend upward with a high of 66 degrees in san jose as well

as morgan hill and san martine. up to 60 in napa and novato. santa rosa will see temperatures of 62 degrees and warmer on saturday, but it may be partly to mostly cloudy as we get a slight chance of north bay showers. we will be watching out for that and have a look ahead in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. we will check back with you. breaking news this morning, a search continues in union city for a suspect who shot and injured an alameda county deputy. happened at about 1:30 yesterday afternoon at a business park along dow avenue. the deputy suffered injuries authorities say are critical but not life threatening. it happened while he was serving an eviction. responding officers shut down the air quickly, believing the suspect was still there. we spoke with a mother who received an alert from her school district to stay out of the area. >> it is scary, and being that it took place in a business park, i work in a similar setup. so you see a lot more of these

things taking place. >> authorities have not publicly identified the suspect but he is considered armed and dangerous. the area remains on lockdown. our ginger conejero saab is there. she will join us with a live report in the next half hour. in the east bay in the city of hayward the investigation continues into the first homicide of 2024. it happened yesterday on foothill boulevard near ash street. video of the scene showing police cars lining the street. a man was shot several times, later dying. a gunman was arrested there at the scene. the motive still under investigation. and developing now, a new strike threat involving teachers across the east bay. they made their intentions known in a facebook live announcement yesterday. >> i'm worried that if we settle for the current offer from the district we will fall further behind our surrounding districts, making it harder to attract and keep quality educators in our district. >> now, the group is actually a union coalition serving places

like pittsburg, martinez, pleasanton, dublin and piedmont. it is made up of 18 chapters across the east bay and it is relatively a new idea. now, its chapters have authorized strike if the contract deal is not reached. so far the individual districts involved are not commenting. happening today, contra costa county fire protection district and cal fire are working to boost wildfire protections. there will be a groundbreaking this morning for the new shaded fuel break project. a fuel break is a strip of land where trees and brush have been reduced to limit the fire's ability to spread. the fuel break will encompass nearly 270 acres of open space across lafayette and walnut creek. the tentative completion day is 2025. an emotional night at chase center as the warriors hit the first time since the death of a beloved assistant coach. >> he was a huge part of who we are, a part of our soul.

>> before last night's game head coach steve kerr addressed the crowd, honoring coach milojesevic. who suffered a heart attack. many wore shirts with serbian word for brother. for the team the grieving process is far from over. >> it is tough looking over at, you know, his chair, but coach challenged us to kind of utilize all of the motions and get lost in the game. >> the warriors won the game, beating atlanta, 134-112. they return to the court tonight when they host sacramento. bell, behind me this morning, it is dark but this is levi's stadium. if you didn't know, the niners do have a big game on tap. they're going to take to the field sunday, looking for a spot in the super bowl. so the team looking mostly good to go in practice.

one major uncertainty is still the health of wide receiver deebo samuel. yesterday he received more treatment. this is on the injured shoulder. he said he is really hoping to play against the lions. one way or another, quarterback brock purdy says the team is prepared. >> we want this game bad, you know, and they've obviously been hoping, you know, they have another championship coming, this organization. the last couple of times we have been in the super bowl we have an fallen short so now we get a shot at it again. to play at home in the nfc championship is going to be sweet. >> and to no one's surprise, ticket prices for the weekend's niners/lions game are rising faster than a spacex rocket. >> kris sanchez joins us to look at how much people are willing to spend to attend the game. >> some people are. but raise your hand if you are not going to the game. congratulations you just raised yourself between $407 to $5,000 according to tick pick. the game is the second most

expensive nfc championship ticket ever. last year's niners/eagles game was the most expensive. take a look at your screen. this is what folks are paying. $711 is the standing-room-only price. you don't even get to sit down. the most expensive right now according to that site is almost $1,000. the view, not too shabby. it is a little like this according to pictures from the site, a view from my seat.com. we talked with niners fans who are going including one whose uncle invited him and another whose brother bought six tickets for the family. >> i know it is not cheap. yes, i don't know exactly what he spent, but i'm thankful to be going. >> i just want to see some sacks, some defense. i want the defense to kill them and, man, jared goff, you are from the bay but i want buzzard to get you really bad. >> that's his first nfl game he's going to. >> oh, wow from for the folks

as always our teammates at nbc sports bay area, they have you covered. pregame coverage begins at 2:30 in the afternoon. be sure to tune in after the game for the postgame live show from the locker room. let's take a peek outside on this thursday morning from the east bay in walnut creek. as i was mentioning, should be nice this weekend but got to get through the workweek first. it should be nice today though, right? >> it should be nice today. of course, we are looking forward to the game where we will see a temperature of 70 degrees throughout the game and also a mostly sunny sky. but, yeah, as we mentioned we do have to make it out the door, head to work this morning. temperatures are fairly mild. we are right at about 47 degrees in martinez. 45 in palo alto. it is 49 in san jose. bit of a cool start, but this is the break in between all of the storm systems we've seen and, of course, there's more out there. so we are still watching another one that is gearing up to hit areas just to our north for the weekend. it will bring in the chance of

showers to the north bay on and off starting late tomorrow night into early friday morning. we're going to see some of those showers basically farther to the north, not expecting any widespread rain. i will be tracking that for you. mike, how are the gas prices looking? going down a couple of cents in the south bay. a few krebs lower in santa clara. $3.61 for platinum gas and from rotten robbie. holding with the lowest in concord, $3.65 on clayton road ultra or national station, same block. vallejo standing out at north bay's best at $3.67 right off i-80. vallejo is now getting lower in other parts of the bay area. looking at speed just fine, picking up the crew on 87. that slowing starting to clear. north of 680 just cleared in the last few minutes as far as the northbound crew as well.

good thursday morning to you. it is right now 5:13. as we take a look at our day planner for concord, it is going to be a chilly start with upper 40s at 8:00. but then going throughout the day, nice and sunny as our temperatures top out at about 60 degrees. we will get a break from the rain, but some areas still have a chance so we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. over here at the golden gate bridge we see the roadway. a little mist has settled there and on the lens as well. nothing dramatic but there will be patches of fog and we will watch by any impact by slicker roadways but calmer seas to report. we will show you what is going on in the east bay coming up. good morning. happy thursday to you. the s&p 500 hit another all-time high. nasdaq is up for the fifth straight day. shares of tesla are under pressure. we will get to that in a second.

first though, boeing. the faa is limiting the speed at which boeing airplane can make airplanes, hopefully to improve safety. the head of boeing will spend another day on capitol hill meeting privately with lawmakers. regulators say they will let the boeing 737 max 9s fly again once they complete inspection, but will passengers fly on them? >> mr. calhoun, what is your message to passengers concerned about flying on your planes? >> we fly safe planes. we don't put airplanes in the air we don't have 100% confidence in. i'm here today in the spirit of transparency, number one, to recognize the seriousness of what you just sked. number two, to share with capitol hill our interests and answer their whens because they have a lot of them. tesla executives spoke to discuss the quarterly profits and sales.

tesla, the most sold car in california but tesla says sales are down significantly and predicts growth will be notably slower this year. the car company cut prices on its cars several times last year. tesla ceo elon musk confirmed tesla is working on an even less expensive sedan, something in the $20,000 range. musk says they're very far along on the new car, though he tends to under estimate timelines on new vehicles. he also said chinese brands would demolish american evs unless washington puts up trade barriers. musk repeated his request for more stock. musk sold off a lot of shares to buy twitter. he wants 25% of common shares, which means tesla would have to dilute your shares to create them for the boss, or they could create two sets of shares, one voting, the other with no power. that's the way facebook does it. musk said 25% was just the right number. quote, that's not so much i could control the company even

>> exactly. maybe you can clear up the forecast. >> definitely clear for us for today. looking good. we need a break from the rain. we've had two storms this week, and i think that's enough. so let's just chill out for a little bit. we are going to see a mostly cloudy start to our morning, some patches of fog here and there, but we do have a clear view as we take a live look outside in oakland. a lot of commuters already up and out the door and getting this thursday started. a look at morgan hill and what to expect for today. partly cloudy and a cool start with temperatures in the upper 40s, and then going throughout the day a gradual warm-up but the sunshine always helps it feel a little bit warmer than the temperature that will only reach up to about 60 degrees. and we are watching out for a slight chance of rain late tonight and into early tomorrow for parts of the north bay, and the rain will be hit or miss but the north bay will be the focus for that chance. we are going to see more clouds coming in. every now and then some sprinkles, but not expecting any more heavy rain. then look at sunday.

it is clear all across the bay area, as we enjoy sunshine and warmer temperatures. so that's going to be nice to have that break. so what is happening here, it is still active in terms of the storm pattern across the region, but it is lifting to the north just a bit. so that's the reason why the north bay is just on that edge of seeing that chance of rain, but then it continues to lift to the north as high pressure builds across the southwest until the middle of next week, and then we start to see that wave of rain coming back as it just comes up and down the coastline. and then we are also looking at much more of an active storm pattern towards the end of next week. looking at the sierra, we do still have a lot more work to do. we are only at about half of our normal amount of the sierra snow pack, and there's only a little bit of snow on the way. we've seen such warm temperatures that the snow that we do get, sometimes it gets rain on top or we see the temperatures go above freezing throughout the day. so within the next week we could see another 4 to 12 inches of

snow, which will not really help catch us up to normal. looking at our forecast for the next several days, the north bay will have the best chance of showers tomorrow and early saturday. sunday is all dry as our temperatures head for the low 70s, and a nice little taste of spring at least for a couple of days. mike, how is it looking in san jose? we're watching those recovering. there we go. a little slowing southbound. the earlier crew had work going on in both directions. they cleared the caltrans grid but they were slowing as the project may are cleared but crews didn't finish. now they're completing their commute off the freeway itself and will be better in the next few. 680 moves nicely after it reopened from overnight road work in the northbound direction. into concord things are moving smoothly, a little tapping of the brake in pittsburg.

east bay for the person who shot an alameda county sheriff's deputy. we are live at the scene with the latest on his condition and where investigators are asking you to stay away from right now. an early start this morning for dozens of volunteers tracking the bay area's unhoused. we are live in the east bay with a closer look at why the count is so critical. waymo wants its robo taxi to take you a long way from san francisco. the new push to expand across the peninsula and the leaders who will likely have the ultimate say. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. thanks for joining us. >> let's get you started with the day. let's get a look at the forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking it for you. the temperature is still cool but we are headed towards a warm-up over the next few days and this is where we are starting right now at about 50 degrees as you head out in

fremont. we are seeing temperature now in san mateo at 50 ges and 47 in san martine. a look at walnut creek. it is a clear view and we will have a mostly sunny day, and our temperatures going from upper 40s to about close to 60 degrees. i think we will have to keep the jacket on today as a lot of our temperatures stay in the upper 50s and only reach up to about 62 in san jose as well as much of the south county. santa rosa also 62 degrees. tomorrow we start to see the warming trend kicking in as we see some of our south bay temperatures in the mid 60s. we will talk about the changes ahead for the weekend. mike, you were following up with slowing in oakland? yes, over here by the coliseum everything seems fine. look at the picture, in the northbound, taillights. you will have slowing passing out of the area past the coliseum and we'll have a look at that. the live update turned green. the overnight slowing was a crew

with overnight road work clearing about half an hour before there was a problem. that's great news. the problem heading to the bay bridge is clear from downtown oakland, slowing at the bridge slowing on the incline. highway 37. more volume and fog throughout novato. >> thank you, mike. >> back to you. we are following the manhunt after a shooting that left a deputy in critical condition. >> live for us outside of the police barricades in union city, ginger conejero saab. are you seeing any police presence there this morning? >> reporter: yes, we are, marcus and laura. you can see behind me this whole area of the business park which is close to dow avenue and alvarado miles in union city. it is completely taped off. you can see behind us there are still investigators here on scene taking pictures at the moment. that is where that scene, that

incident happened yesterday. moments ago the coroner's office just left, but we have not gotten confirmation if the police do have the suspect in custody or if he is still on the loose. however, we have been told that this area is now deemed safe for the public. last night however it was a different message. officers were advising people to avoid the area here at all costs, and that had some people on edge. >> concerning to see all of the neighbors come out and does anybody know what is going on, and information isn't always released that quickly. so, you know, kind of the best thing to do is stay inside. >> people were talking or whatever as i was also coming out. it was happening and it was just a lot of commotion and a lot of cops coming and all kind of stuff. >> reporter: now, that man, that last man we heard from was actually on scene leaving an orthodontist appointment in this business park at the time of the shooting. according to the union city

police, the shooting took place yesterday afternoon with the suspect opening fire on alameda county sheriff's deputy serving an eviction in the area. now, that deputy from what we understand did go through surgery. he was at eden medical center in castro valley. he did suffer a critical injury but they were non-life-threatening. now, as you can see, investigators in and out of where that incident took place. i am told that this is just the start of csi's investigation, so they do anticipate that they will be here for at least several hours. we're live in union city, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay". thank you. attorneys for a man accused in a deadly stabbing of a tech ceo will argue to move his trial out of san francisco. cash app founder bob lee was murdered last april. within days the defendant was arrested. late last year photos were punished of him in his jail

cell, taken by a freelance photographer working on an unrelated assignment. his attorneys will argue that those photos may have tainted the jury pool. the trial is scheduled for march. alphabet's waymo is now launching a push to make it a reality. the company asked the state for approval to expand its operations out of san francisco. waymo is asking for its cars to cover all or a part of the entire peninsula down to sunniville, over by the bay and interstate 280. it requested approval to monetize the l.a. area operations which is now in a trial run. individual cities, as you may know, are not part of the self-driving taxi approval process. well, new this morning, new closures in the same part of san francisco that's been hit by a mass exodus of businesses. "the chronicle" reports a

popular coffee shop on market near kearny will close at the end of the month and a walgreens in the financial district will close at the end of february. critics say the city is trapped in a so-called doom loop with less business activity due to more crime and remote work leading to higher operating costs. moving forward on a trio of illnesses now in peak season across the bay area. we are talking about rsv, covid and influenza. state health leaders say rsv cases have peaked and are declining, but positive tests for covid and flu are running at slightly higher than 10% with many infected people never actually taking a formal test. of course, there's no test for the common cold, and experts say a cough may not be specific to one virus so testing is the only way to know your status and how to best treat it. infectious disease experts also point out there is still time to

good thursday morning. the time is 5:43. let's head to the north bay where we are checking out novato. starting out with patches of fog and temperatures only in the mid 40s. it is a chilly start with a gradual warm-up today and a lot of sunshine as we get a chance to dry out and take a break from the rain. for the north bay, the rain chances come back sooner than the rest of the bay area. i'll have a look at that and our microclimate forecast coming up. >> i like that weather shot. over here i like the flow of traffic in this shot. north bay through palo alto right here, i did see a little sluggish as you came up past marsh but things have smoothed out. things are building on 101 but

in san jose a pretty predictable pattern. still, we will show that to you. a new follow-up for boeing which recently had one of its plane's wheel fall off while awaiting takeoff. this happened over the weekend at hartsfield-jackson international airport in atlanta. the faa saying the delta airlines flight was moments away from taking off when the nose wheel came off. thankfully no one was injured. all of this, of course, comes as the faa agrees to allow united and alaska airlines to resume flying its 737 max 9 jets. those fleets have been grounded since that door panel blue off on an alaska airlines flight earlier this month. faa has signed off on a strict inspection process and alaska says it may have some of the planes flying again as soon as tomorrow. united plans to resume sunday. the faa halted boeing's 737 max production expansion. at 6:15 have more from

scott mcgrew with the boeing ceo who meets with senators again today. kamala harris will fly to the state capital later today and next week visits the bay area. she is on a white house push touting reproductive rights. on monday's anniversary of the roe v. wade decision she visited wisconsin. the same topic is expected to be front and center when she arrives in the bay area next monday. harris is expected to attend a reproductive rights rally in san jose. california's u.s. senator alex padilla and alfonso butler are expected to attend. president biden picked up a crucial endorsement from one of the largest unions. >> he got the nod from the uaw, which was probably inevitable. >> inevitable but it took a while. the autoworkers apparently making sure they got the promises they needed before making that public endorsement. huge get for the president. the union represents nearly a

"today in the bay's" bob redell joining us from oakland this morning. i understand the number of unhoused people has grown significantly there in alameda county. >> reporter: yeah, unfortunately, you are correct. good morning to you. you see some of the volunteers, getting a little bit of pep talk in the city of oakland before they head out on the streets to conduct this census that is required every two years by hud, the federal agency. what they will be doing, the mayor is here. she is about to speak. there she is right now. but they will go out on the different routes and try to count the number of unhoused. this is something that is taking place throughout the bay area and this is, of course, the city of oakland's version. i want to show you some of the latest numbers. you can see alameda county, there were just over 5,600 people unhoused in the year 2017. 2022, unfortunately grew to over 9,7 hadn't people. by my calculation that was a 73%

increase. we got lucy casden with alameda county of homeless care and coordination. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> reporter: how are you able to count people without an address? >> that's a great question. we are lucky this year. we have over 1200 volunteers across the county working on this. that's actually more people just -- we have more people in oakland this year than the whole county last year. it takes an army of volunteers we are so grateful for as well as city, county, cbo partners to go out and we go block by block through census tracks so we can make sure that we are counting every person out there on the street, in vehicles, in rvs. >> we see the bags behadn't you. these are toiletry bags, a snack you will hand out to these people. do you have a sense -- i know the point is to get a count, but do you have a sense of whether the number is down, the same or up? i am assuming it is up based on what i see.

>> exactly. we are using a different methodology this year and we expect both based on the methodology getting richer data, but certainly based on other points we have besides this count we anticipate the numbers going up? >> reporter: why can't we solve this, we as a county, we as a region? >> i mean that here in alameda, like you said, it is a city -- you know, a city, a county, a state, a federal crisis we are in. we see this across the country, right, this homeless crisis. i think we here in alameda county are really looking at innovative ways to solve homelessness, and part of the reason a point-in-time count is that the data from this day helps how we design programs and move towards our goals. >> reporter: if the number goes up does it help get more money from, let's say, the feds. >> it certainly can, exactly. the number helps in terms of how much money we get and also how we allocate the resources within the county. >> reporter: lucy, thank you for

weekend, and i know people are going to be celebrating. so we're going to have some great weather for that. we have a couple more days to get to the weekend, so here is a look at what you are heading out the door to. temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s, and it looks so much better this morning compared to yesterday for that drive as you are heading out. i want to show you how much rain we measured, most of us getting about a quarter to half inch of rainfall. where we did see the highest amounts in parts of the east bay with fremont yesterday getting about half an inch of rain, about the same in hayward, and we are seeing a lot of half-inch rainfall totals for some of the areas that got a pretty good soaking yesterday. now we take a break as we are in between these storm systems, but we are not completely done. we are going to see more atmospheric rivers moving into the region, but the thing about what we'll see over the next few days is that it will be slightly to our north. so what we're seeing here for tomorrow morning mlb some very light, spotty showers moving through. the north bay will be the focus

for a chance of some additional rainfall, maybe a few hundredths of an inch of rainfall. it will be cloudy, misty, drizzly at times, and heading into saturday as well as sunday eventually it will be clearing up. we are looking at a nice little break as that storm track heads farther to the north. so we're going to sigh that break for a little while, but the rain eventually will be coming back. this is next wednesday in the morning. that's when we are expecting our next big storm to come in. so it is going to be nice to have nothing significant coming our way. still some slight rain chances, focusing on the northbound tomorrow as well as saturday. sunday we are all dry as our temperatures warm up to the low 70s. mike, you were looking at some slowing through san jose. >> i am. not necessarily right here at the camera, although the volume is building, north 101 at our camera just north of the 280/680 interchange. you see the slower sensors which is right on schedule. no surprises traveling north through silicon valley.

traveling east bay over the san mateo bridge, there was slowing coming off the bridge and i saw what happens after a traffic break though nothing was on the grid. we are tracking it. 92 moving smoothly to and from the peninsula. across the bay out of oakland, the buildup quickly building over the last ten minutes. we have all lanes filled in at the toll plaza. obviously the metering lights are on. it is a smooth drive on the span. there may be an incident further north at the richmond bridge and fog through the north bay so use appropriate caution. back to you. >> thanks, mike. happening now, sclera firefighters getting ready to deliver an update on the christmas day fire in lossal toes. this was nearal camino real and san antonio road. demolition began on the building destroying it. a section has been closed since the fire. we hope to learn more later today from officials. it is a busy morning on
