♪ ♪ breaking right now at 6:00, armed and dangerous. a manhunt underway in the east bay after a deputy was shot while serving an eviction notice. we are live at the scene with new details on the search for the suspect. plus, a million dollar deal ahead of this weekend's playoff game. levis and the 49ers make a new announcement. the details being revealed at this very moment. this is "today in the bay." ♪ ♪ we always keep you up to date with what is going on across the bay area. good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we will get to breaking news stories as well as checking on the morning commute with mike.

first, a break in the rain today. yes, and it will be nice to see sunshine. the temperature is cool but we'll work on that over the next few days. looking outside in san francisco, much different picture from this time yesterday where we had a steady downpour. right now we are looking at a mild start to our day. a few clouds. at 8:00 we will be at 51 degrees, and we're going to stay in the 50s for the afternoon, but it will be mostly sunny helping it to feel a little better out there. a look at all of our microclimates and the temperatures you can expect today. most of us in the upper 50s to low 60s. we are headed up to 62 in san martine. novato up to 60 today, and san mateo hitting a high of 60 degrees. it will be slightly warmer tomorrow but we will see some more clouds coming in. it will be partly to mostly cloudy throughout the day as san jose will see a high tomorrow of 66 degrees. we will talk about the weekend coming up. mike, you have a new crash out of richmond? >> i do. it was approaching the richmond bridge. toll plaza here. no traffic was coming through the lane, the far right lane,

but now i see cars coming through again so they may have cleared that crash very quickly. no injuries were reported. you see the damp roadway here on the live picture but you don't see any problems for censors. this is a build across the bay bridge. this, of course, as the metering lights are active. slowing through rich mod. highway 101, less visibility so use caution. you are used to that down there. the south bay, things are slowing northbound 101 but there may be a new hazard as you head through santa clara. we will check on 101 again down there coming up. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:02 right now. we are following breaking news in the east bay in the ongoing manhunt for the suspect in a shooting that left a deputy critically injured. it happened in a business park. "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab joins us live. what are you seeing, ginger? >> reporter: there's definitely still a police presence here the morning after the shooting

happened. laura, we have seen union city police. we also know that csi is inside that area there or by the area where the incident happened. yesterday they had been conducting their investigation. this morning we saw the coroner's office also briefly stop by this the morning. also, they have now taken off. we have been told, unlike last night, that this area is now deemed safe for the public, no longer a danger to the public, but it is still an active crime scene. we have not gotten confirmation from law enforcement if the suspect or a suspect is now in custody. last night officers advised people to avoid this area at dow near alvarado niles at all costs. this after an alameda county sheriff's deputy was shot when serving an eviction in the area. all of this unfolding yesterday afternoon around 1:30. the area was put on lockdown around 4:00 in the afternoon, and now remains that way.

>> ginger, what about the sheriff's deputy, do we have an update on his condition? >> reporter: well, we do know that the deputy was brought to eden medical center over in castro valley. we are told that he did undergo surgery after sustaining critical but not life-threatening injuries. this morning we did hear that he is in recovery and is in good spirits. laura. >> well, hoping for the best for him in that recovery. thank you, ginger, for the latest. in the city of hayward the investigation continues into its first homicide of 2024. this happened yesterday on foot hill boulevard near ashe street. video from the scene showing police cars lining the street there. we were told that a man was shot several times, later dying. now, a gunman was arrested there at the scene. a motive is still under investigation. and happening today, contra costa county fire protection district and cal fire, they are working to boost wildfire protections. so there will be a groundbreaking this morning for

a new shaded fuel break project. a fuel break is a strip of land where there has been a reduction of trees and brush to limit the fire's ability to spread. the fuel break will encompass nearly 270 acres of open space across lafayette and walnut creek. the tentative completion date is in 2025. and breaking news for you this morning, big news involving levi's stadium. in this case we're not talking about sunday's nfc championship game, which the niners will no doubt -- i'm going to say will no doubt win. >> you have to be confident. we're going to win! >> i don't want to say it. >> right now we are talking about a brand-new deal involving the stadium's nameplate. minutes. home field will continue to be levi's stadium for the next ten year. the san francisco company showing its commitment to the bay with a $170 million naming contract. you will remember that the niners and levi's stadium first entered into the partnership in 2013, hoping to deliver a new spencer for fans who were still feeling kind of disheartened about the end of the days at candlestick park. 49ers' president art guido talk with nbc "today in the bay's" raj mathai about building it on the past. >> we had to build this own. we had to have our own moments. we had those moments. we have a moment coming up on sunday we all hope to take advantage of. for me, i think having super bowl l here, having outdoor games, there was not a large-scale event in the san francisco bay area before levi's stadium was built. >> he says in the ten years of the partnership, the stadium has

hosted 150 events and hosted 10 million guests, delivering $2 billion in economic impact. now, you can hear more about the levi's stadium naming rights tonight at 7:00 as raj and art guido continue their conversation. a note here, the stadium authority has to give its final approval but we expect that will happen next tuesday. laura. let's talk a little sports because the team is looking very good to go into practice ahead of sunday's nfc championship game. one major uncertainty though is still the health of wide receiver deebo samuel. yesterday he received more treatment on his injured shoulder and hopes to play against the lions. the bay area is pumped up for the champ championship game and so is the "today" show. join the team tomorrow morning at 4:00 a.m. at the lot at city

in san jose with temperatures going from low 50s to low 60s for the middle of the day. so we are going to be still cool, but at least it will be sunny and we will gradually start to see warmer temperatures and a forecast for tomorrow. we are in the low to mid 60s, and then heading into saturday, upper 60s. look at san martine, 71 degrees. we will talk about the warm-up and rain coming up in a few minutes. mike has a look at lower gas prices. yes, in fact starting with this particular spot in santa clara we have seen the price come down a few cents each time. santa clara, $3.61 is the price at both platinum gas we've been tracking on washington street. contra costa holds with the lowest in concord, $3.65 on clayton road. then in vallejo, overall it stands as the north bay's best with prices around $3.67,

specifically at royal gas on tennessee street right off i-80. for a look at the roadway we will show you a smooth flow of traffic right now. we are not looking at major issues as folks travel throughout the bay. the south bay sees the northbound 101 build. i've circled great american report with reports of debris in the roadway. watch for that. great american parkway with access to, of course, we were just talking about levi's stadium. back up at the toll plaza but we can predict there. there's something on 24. i'm going to check that out. there might be a fender bender. >> hopefully no drama. a lot of people love ryan reynolds but imagine him reaching out to you for money. someone can imagine that, scammers. the new warning about the imposter scams and the reason some people are falling victim to this. it is really easy. >> that's extraordinary. i would think ryan would have plenty of money. also, cleared for take-off.

good thursday morning. it is now 6:13 and we're taking a live look outside in fremont. starting out much dryer than yesterday with still some clouds overhead and temperatures at about 52. we'll have a cool morning and a mix of sun and clouds early, but lots of sunshine today as we only make it up to about 60 here today. we will talk about the weekend and changes ahead coming up in a few minutes. we are experiencing changes in the volume here on 92, san mateo bridge westbound with the taillights moving smoothly. brake tapping going on. we have changes on the bay bridge, and in the south bay we will talk about what is happening down there as well. good morning. happy thursday to you. the s&p 500 hit another all-time high. nasdaq is up for the fifth straight day. shares of tesla are under pressure.

we'll get to that in a second. the big story, we just got the latest data on the american economy and it was way, way stronger than expected. fourth quarter gdp grew 3.3%. economists looking for the lows in 2%. talk of a recession now just sounds silly. now, normally i would warn good news like this has one problem, you know what it is, it is inflation, except the inflation numbers that are embedded in the gdp report shows the price index, pce, personal consumption expenditures, is down. it is good news with a heaping topping of more good news. the head of boeing of spend another day on capitol hill meeting privately with lawmakers. regulators say they will let the 737 max 9s fly again once they complete inspection, but will passengers fly on them. >> mr. calhoun, what is your message to passengers concerned about flying on your planes?

>> we fly safe planes. we don't put airplanes in the air we don't have 100% confidence in. i'm here today in the spirit of transparency to, number one, recognize the seriousness of what you just asked, number two, to share everything i can with our capitol hill interests and answer their questions because they have a lot of them. >> tesla executives spoke with reporters and analysts wednesday to discuss the company's quarterly profit and sales. tesla the most sold car in california but tesla says sales are down significantly worldwide and predicts growth will be, quote, notably slower this year. the car cut company on its prices on its cars several times last year. tesla ceo elon musk confirmed lexus is working on a less expensive sedan, something in the $20,000 range. musk says they are, quote, very far along on new cars, although he tends to underestimate

timelines on vehicle. he also said chinese brands would demolish american evs unless washington puts your trade barriers. musk sold a lot of shares off of tesla to buy twitter. he wants 25% of common shares. he said 25% is the right number, not so much that i could control the company even if i go bonkers, he said, but enough that i have a strong influence. the question is those 25% have to come from tesla. >> somewhere, right. >> exactly, which then dilutes everyone else's tesla shares. >> exactly. thank you, scott. >> you bet. new for you this morning, a new warning that goes far beyond the standard crank call. the fbi warning about imposter scams. picture it. big-name celebrity reaching out to you like ryan reynolds or dolly parton. more than likely it is not really them but an imposter aiming to convince you to send them money. authorities called it a common and profitable scam. one special agent says scammers

look primarily for so-called super fans. >> there is an allure about celebrities and people wanting to believe that they're actually talking to those people that they see on tv and in the movies every day. they become targets for these types of criminal actors. >> now, if you want to know which celebrities are being impersonated most you can watch that segment coming up on the "today" show. that's at 7:00 right after us here on "today in the bay." >> so dolly is not really calling me? >> no. >> stumble to the bed, to the kitchen -- hey. a live look at san jose where a new chick-fil-a restaurant is being proposed near the downtown area. as "the mercury news" reports it would be on the corner of west san carlo street. a few retailers and a parking lot would be demolished to make way for the restaurant. it is not clear where chick-fil-a plans to buy the site. it has to be approved by city

leaders. steeped in controversy over a hot tip on how brits should enjoy their tea. >> the chemistry professor published a book about the chemistry of tea. it studies 100 chemical compound and looks at ways to better brew the cup to make it taste better. the book suggests adding a pinch of salt. it caused a stir among etiquette coaches across the pond but it is not supposed to be enough salt to taste it, just a bit of salt, a little bit better. some advice there, serving in a short, stout mug to maintain the heat and adding milk after the tea and hot water have been poured. >> so it takes away the bitterness? >> yeah. i just want to taste it to see what it tastes like. >> makes sense. >> you are a tea aficionado. >> i don't drink coffee so every now and then i will have some tea, but it is the instant stuff. it is not the good stuff. >> you don't brew it? brew this bag. >> hot water, done. >> that's it.

>> insta. all right. insta nice forecast because it is looking good. >> yeah, but you need the hot cup of coffee or tea to step out the door this morning as we are feeling cool temperatures. let me show you what we are feeling right now as we get this thursday started. it is 44 in palo alto, one of the cooler temperatures on the map. we are about the same in vacaville. martina at 48 degrees and 50 in morgan hill. it is a dry start. in brentwood we are going to see a mostly sunny day, and temperatures at 9:00 at 52 degrees. into the early afternoon we briefly hit 60 degrees, but it will be a clear and sunny day. you can see why. we are in a break in between these storm systems, the one clearing off towards the east that we had yesterday and there is another one to our west. we can see that it is a pretty large one. what we've seen with the at mass -- atmospheric rivers active across the region, waving up and

down the coastline and now it is further north. we will have a chance in the north bay but it won't be until the middle of next week before we see a widespread and significant chance of rain back in the forecast. we are looking at some pretty soggy conditions for the end of next week. we are hoping that will help us ot with the sierra snow pack because we are still only at about half of our normal amount of sierra snow. we know this is important because it does supply a good majority of our water supply as we go into those dry summer months. it helps to fill the reservoirs as the snow melts. so we are going to see some light additional snowfall. most of what we have seen recently, at least for the lower elevations, has been rain. then as you go up into the upper elevations for next week we could see another 4 to 12 inches of snow, but that's not really going to help us out with this big snow drought that we're seeing here. and then looking at our forecast over the next several days, we're going from low 60s for today to low 70s. that's going to be so nice to get a taste at least for a few

days as we see that combining with the sunshine. and looking at san francisco, our temperatures, well, they will be warming up. mike, how is it looking in the east bay? things look the same as last time we took a look at the bridge toll plaza with the predictable build. this lane is clear around the toll plaza, just around the bend farther than we can see, there's the crash we talked about. it is causing more slowing so that will be a factor if you are driving from the east shore freeway across the bridge to san rafael, 580. meanwhile, everything else is moving smoothly. the incident on 24 is affecting the commuter but showing east bay slowing. those are moving smoothly predictably there and around the rest of the bay. >> thanks, mike. 6:22. emotions on full display at chase center for players, coaches, fans and family. >> the warriors taking to the court for the first time since the death of the beloved

taxis to take you a long way from san francisco. the new push to expand across the peninsula. who likely will have the ultimate say. this is "today in the bay." ♪ ♪ good thursday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we will get to that breaking news for you in a moment, but first want to get you started a look at the forecast for us. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring what to expect today and clearing skies. it will be nice to have a break from the rain. we already had two storms this week and now we will have a chance to let the water soak into the ground. we can enjoy sunshine as we start out this morning with cool temperatures now in the upper 40s and low 50s. let's get a look at mountain view and what to expect today. going from 47 this morning to temperatures heading into the upper 50s, and a mostly sunny sky. all around the bay area we'll get close to 60 degrees with a few spots reaching into the lower 60s. we have a lot going on this weekend, so i'll have a look at

some events in the forecast coming up a little late. >> thank you, kari. there is breaking news this morning coming out of the east bay. this is where a manhunt continues for the suspect in the shooting that left a deputy critically injured. it happened in the business park that stayed on lockdown for hours. that situation is now changing. "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab live for us in union city this morning. ginger, it certainly has been a busy overnight hours for the police officers. are they still there at the scene? >> reporter: that is correct, marcus. they are still here. there is still an active scene behind us but we've been told this area of the intersection of dow avenue and specifically here in union city it no longer poses a danger to the public. that crime scene still behind us now. you can see the police tape and you can see actually union city police officers and csi investigators by that orange

forklift. they have been there. that is the area where the incident happened yesterday. they've been taking pictures, csi has been taking pictures throughout the morning as part of their investigation. the alameda county coroner's office was also here earlier this morning but they have left. last night officers were advising people to avoid the area here at all cost, and it left some people on edge. >> concerning to see all of the neighbors come out and does anybody know what's going on, and information isn't always released that quickly. so, you know, kind of the best thing to do is stay inside. >> people were talking or whatever as i was also coming out. it was happening and it was just a lot of commotion and a lot of cops coming and all kind of stuff. >> reporter: well, that man was actually on scene leaving an orthodontist appointment in this business park at the time of the shooting. according to union city police the shooting took place yesterday afternoon with the suspect opening fire on an

alameda county sheriff's deputy serving an eviction in the area. we were told that happened around 1:30 in the afternoon. this area went on lockdown around 4:30 and still remains on lockdown this morning. now, the deputy that was shot was brought to eden medical center in castro valley. we are told that he went through surgery, is now recovering from critical but non-life-threatening injuries, and is in good spirits. we have not gotten confirmation if authorities have a suspect in custody, but we do anticipate an update around 8:00 this morning where we will find more details. as soon as those come in we will bring those to you. back to you. >> glad to see the deputy is in better spirits this morning. thank you for the update. 6:33 right now. this morning alameda and san mateo counties are conducting their annual count of how many people are living on the streets. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from oakland, from

city hall where, bob, i understand you just spoke to the mayor as well. they're saying the number of unhoused people has really grown in alameda county? >> reporter: they are expecting it to. i will go into that in just a moment. we actually moved to laney college where some volunteers -- i know it is dark out but they're to the right. there are over 400 volunteers, a record number and this is a small group of them. they're going out and -- watch out for the puddle, jesse. look out for people that might be unhoused. what they will do is make contact with them and then count, include them in the count. if you are not familiar, hud requires that communities throughout the country do this every two years. so what they'll do is make a count and then they will give them a bag of some toiletries. just to give you a sense, this is a growing problem, if you have been to oakland you are well aware of this. we'll show you some numbers on the screen there. in 2017 the number of homeless

people in different oakland -- let me pull this up. i have to get the numbers right. it was just over 5,600. if you look at the numbers from 2022, it grew to over 9,700. that is a 73% increase. what you were saying, laura, they are expecting that number to go up in part because the last count in 2022 was during covid. the volunteers were maintaining social distance them, sometimes just estimating how many people were living inside an encampment without being ail to go in and count the individuals. here you are seeing video at city hall from 30 to 45 minutes ago when the volunteers were being briefed. if you want to come back out here live we're with one of the volunteers. what they're doing is asking us to keep our distance when they approach the people that are unhoused so we don't intimidate them, scare them or make them reluctant to cooperate because it is important. here is the mayor of oakland. we spoke to her 30 or 40 minutes

ago. >> reporter: at what point is it a failure of city government or leadership? >> you know what? i think there's always room to grow with a partnership from county to city to the state to the federal government. at this point we also know that it is a larger problem nationwide, right, in regards to our mental health facilities and lack of them. you know, having people go through our county jail is not actually the appropriate resource or methodology in regards to getting people off the street. we have to target the root causes, and the root cause, as you heard, is the housing cost. not just that, but making sure we have resources for mental health and wrap-around services. getting to families before they become unhoused is incredibly important, so preservation of our housing stock. >> this is video from across the bay in san mateo county. that county is also conducting its census of the unhoused

today. contra costa did theirs yesterday. as i mentioned, the city of oakland in conjunction with alameda county are doing theirs right now as we speak. this is not only happening in oakland but other communities throughout alameda county. we were just asked to come up from the bridge, underneath the bridge where we were at because there were a few tents down there. the volunteers were counting them, can't see in the dark, but there's a pretty large encampment over there and i assume they will approach those people soon as well. reporting live in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for that. very busy out there even in the early morning hours. thanks, bob. 6:37 right now. happening today, attorneys for the man accused in the deadly stabbing of a tech ceo will argue to move his trial out of san francisco. cash app founder bob lee was murdered last april. within days nimo momeny was arrested. late last year photos were published taken by a freelance

photographer working on an unrelated assignment. he will argue those may potentially taint the jury pool. for now the jury trial is scheduled to begin in march. vice president kamala harris is waking up on the west coast. early next we she will visit the bay area. the vice president on a white house push touting reproductive rights. on monday's anniversary of the roe v. wade decision she visited wisconsin. the same topic is expected to be front and center when she arrives in the bay area next monday. harris expected to attend a reproductive rights rally in san jose. california's u.s. senators alex padilla and laphonza butler are expected to attend. picture driving a self-driving taxi in palo alto and taking it into san francisco. waymo not only pictures the idea, that's what they're trying to do, launch a new push to make it a reality. the company last week asked for

approval to expand its operations out of san francisco. waymo is asking for its cars to cover all or part of the entire peninsula down to sunnyvale, bordered by the bay and interstate 280. it also requested puc approval to monetize its l.a. area operations, which is now in a trial run. individual cities, as you may know, are not part of the self-driving taxi approval process. 6:39. a live look at sfo. even though the rain is gone for now, weather conditions in the area might likely continue to cause trouble headaches for flyers. i want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. there were lots of delays we know yesterday. what is it looking like now and for the rest of the week? >> yeah, it looks like, you know, at any point we could see some low clouds, so that always has an impact on the flights at sfo. we will have a lot of people coming into town for the 49ers game on sunday, so we're going to see it busy around here.

but just in time for the game, the sky will clear and we will see sunshine and some beautiful weather. we are looking at our kickoff temperature at 72 degrees, and we will be in the upper 60s by the end of the game. really nice and comfortable, and it is going to be great but we also have a lot more going on around the bay area. in chinatown there will be a lunar new year celebration in oakland both saturday and sunday. if you are going to check that out you will see temperatures there going from mid 50s in the morning to low 60s for the middle of the day. also nice and dry. in napa there will be the lighted art festival happening during the evenings, and we will have some cool evenings ahead, but at least during the middle of the day we will see a mix of sun and clouds. we will be watching the north bay, napa as well, for a slight chance of showers. for the most part it will be mostly cloudy and clearing out on sunday. mike, you have been looking at a crash on the nimitz.

what is going on? >> we saw these flares out, down to one lane and then no lanes. this chp and tow truck crew were able to get the vehicle out of the lanes and over to the shoulder just in the last few seconds. so we are looking at traffic just reinstating, the right two lanes look like they're blocked or at least the shoulder and right lane. it has restricted traffic heading north past the coliseum. that's the jam up. westbound 580, if you can choose to use it through oakland hills do that, passing highway 13 and eventually joining back up at the bay bridge, maybe the toll plaza. it is southbound that is the drive 680 and towards the silicon valley. there's a build up towards richmond and the bay bridge. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:41. a new honor for saab icon norm meneta. the honor you won't be able to

quarter to half an inch of rainfall. when did we last have rain. mill valley, a half inch of rain. napa had a quarter inch of rain. now we are seeing once again a break in the activity. that storm has moved off to the east. there is another one off to our west, so we are in between right now with some dry conditions. at least for a little while some sunshine. we could start to see some spotty showers coming back as early as late tonight into early tomorrow, mainly for the north bay. as you wake up and head out tomorrow, the rain is already clearing but the north bay will be the focus for some saturday morning showers as well. so for the most part it is only slight rain chances here over the next few days and clearing out on sunday. now, the atmospheric river is still very close by and that's why the north bay will still have a chance of rain. it is right there on the southern edge of that

atmospheric river targeting the pacific northwest. it will lift to the north, we will have a few days of a break, but next wednesday rain will be back and it may be heavy as we see more showers in the forecast through the end of next week. once again, only a slight chance of rain. nothing significant here. look at the temperature trend. it will be nice as we warm up a few days each day, peaking on sunday with low 70s. san francisco will have upper 50s, heading to the mid 60s for the end of the weekend. mike, you are tracking that cash? what is going on? >> we have the live camera here. kari, we can tell folks this smoke looks dramatic but chp just brought out new flares and are reconfiguring here. now it is just the right two lanes that are blocked. continued activity. there are two vehicles that look like they were involved in the crash. two other chp cruisers and there are crews at the scene watching the traffic control. this will continue to evolve as the situation progresses through their reporting process and whatever they need to clear from the roadway as well.

♪ ♪ 6:56. want to welcome you back. we are moving you forward what look at the top stories here on "today in the bay" starting with breaking news in the east bay. this is where a manhunt continues for the search of the person who shot and critically injured an alameda county deputy. >> if fact, we have a live look in union city close to the scene of that shooting. it happened in a business park on dow avenue. the area was on lockdown for hours. the shooting happened at about 1:30 yesterday afternoon. the deputy, we know, suffered injuries police say are critical but not life threatening. it happened while the deputy was serving an eviction. through the overnight hours people were told to stay away from the area as it was believed that the suspect was still there, but police this morning

are saying there is no longer a threat to the public. authorities so far are revealing no additional details about the suspect or the investigation, but they are planning an 8:00 a.m. news conference, which you can watch. we'll stream it live from our nbc bay area platform. well, in oakland hundreds of volunteers counting the number of people living on the streets. this is the annual homeless count which federal housing leaders require counties to conduct every two years. oakland leaders expect the total number to increase this year, in part because the last count was in 2022 during covid, and at that time the pandemic was still in full effect and volunteers had to social distance and in some cases the number of people was just a guess in those encampments. oakland's numbers have been on an upward trend since 2017 and grew by 70% through last homeless count-back in 2022. breaking news this morning out of santa clara.
