verdict. i don't think we'll ever forget that. >> that was a memorable day. i didn't anticipate things were going to go that way i preferred the chocolates we got both done it is one of the main headlines we're going to get to. a lot of news, a little playoff football to talk about this weekend. but there's also that punishing weather in the forecast. a lot of it for the south today. another rough forecast for areas that have already been under water for days because of severe flash flooding the rain could come fast and furious again today, before the storm moves up to the east coast. we're going to have the full forecast for what you can expect let's begin with morning with that jury verdict against donald trump, the second time in just a matter of months that he's lost trying to defend himself in court against defamation claims. >> reporter: another victory for writer e. jean carroll in her long-running defamation battle against donald trump the former president now facing a staggering $83 million in

damages. carroll saying in a statement, this is a great victory for every woman who stands up when she's been knocked down, and a huge defeat for every bully who has tried to keep a woman down mr. trump vowing to appeal the jury's verdict, taking to truth social, saying this is not america. his attorney blasting the judge, saying the deck was stacked against her client from the beginning. >> before i walked into court that judge decided that every single defense president trump had we were not allowed to raise in front of the jury >> reporter: carroll first came forward in 2019, saying he sexually assaulted her in a department store dressing room in the '90s. he told reporters she was a liar >> what she did is terrible, what's going on. it's a total false accusation, and i don't know anything about her. >> reporter: it's those words from mr. trump and his social media post that followed that kicked off the entire lawsuit. carroll alleging he unleashed a

torrent of threats online, from trump supporters and tarnished her reputation in may, a different jury found mr. trump had sexually abused carroll and defamed her, after he was no longer president, awarding her $5 million. this second jury left only to decide how much he should have to pay for what he said about her while in office. the jury returning their unanimous verdict after fewer than three hours of deliberations friday mr. trump's main political rival also taking note, nikki haley saying, in part, quote, donald trump wants to be the presumptive republican nominee and we're talking about $83 million in damages we're not talking about fixing the border, we're not talking about tackling inflation >> as you said, we know that former president trump is planning to appeal we were in the car when this broke and the first question i asked you was, will e. jean carroll ever see any of this money? the case is going to get tied up in course for a long time.

remember, this is the second verdict. he's already been ordered to pay once before. and she hasn't seen a cent of that money he put some in escrow because he couldn't get anyone else to put the money up front so he could try to get a bond. but who is going to lend to him? he's a credit risk he has all of these legal cases, all of this legal liability. i think this is going to be really tough for her it's going to be a long time >> yet the potential that she could file another suit if the defamation continues going forward. thank you, fresh off that huge verdict against him. former president trump returns to the campaign trial later today, with an event in las vegas. mr. trump trying to nail down the republican nomination as the current president, joe biden, tries to energize democrats in south carolina nbc's aaron gilchrist is traveling with president biden he is in comelombia, south carolina this morning. >> reporter: good morning. early voting for democrats here in south carolina has started a week ahead of the primary that happens next saturday, and

tonight president biden will headline the state party's annual dinner. this is really an appearance that is partly a thank you to south carolina for paving his way to the democratic nomination four years ago it's also an acknowledgment of how important the black vote is to the president's re-election a campaign official telling me that tonight the president will explain how he's kept his promises to the black community and contrast that with life under a second trump administration president biden will also say that there is more to be done and that he's putting in the work meanwhile, the republican front-runner, former president trump, is also back on the campaign trail in las vegas today, and south carolina's former governor, nikki haley, is campaigning here in her home state. she is expected to take shots at trump and also is vowing to stay in the race for the republican nomination, despite losing new hampshire, peter. >> kristen welker also having nikki haley on the sunday show tomorrow aaron, former president trump is also facing some sharp criticism from democrats and republicans,

including some of his allies, for urging them to reject what would be a rare bipartisan border deal. where do things stand on that? >> reporter: peter, negotiation on border security have been inching -- they've been inching closer. president trump saying on social media that republicans shouldn't do anything and a deal only helps democrats. some conservatives have suggested blocking an agreement so that voters can blame president biden for failure and then credit president trump for getting a deal done if he wins the election coming up republicans on the hill are calling efforts to disrupt the deal's progress appalling and tragic. >> aaron gilchrist with the latest from south carolina this morning. thank you so much. let's turn now to the weather and the threat of severe weather today in the south, including more flash flooding. meteorologist michelle grossman is in for angie this morning.

>> great to see you. we are so soggy, those umbrellas getting lots of work this week because we're seeing rounds of rain coming in we're still seeing that today. 23 million people still impacted by flood alerts. we have a flood watch in the green here no flash flood warnings. that's good news we'll see them as we go throughout the day taking a look at radar, we're looking at heavy rain where you see the brighter colors, the reds, oranges, yellows that's where we're seeing torrential downpours we saw a little bit of lightning a few hours ago and we're looking at the chance for severe storms that's going to bring the chance of damaging winds and a few tornadoes are possible especially where you see the yellow so montgomery, enterprise, mobile could see some hail with any of those storms as well this is the setup, an area of low pressure we've have a frontal boundary draped across the area think of it as a train track and cars moving along the track. here comes another one we're looking at the rain spreading through a soggy southeast and we're going to add

to that. we're looking at a severe storm weather risk throughout the afternoon. we're going to see it move into the mid-atlantic and then we're going to introduce some cold weather as well. so in the cold side, we're looking at snow. that's where you steeee the blu. the whiter blue is where we'll see heavier amounts of snow. heavy rain along the coast and snow blanketing the interior we could see from 4 to 6 inches of snow in some spots. then by monday it's a messy commute as westart our monday morning because we're looking at the system moving offshore with lingering snow, gusty winds throughout the northeast we're going to pay attention to that look at all of this rain where you see the darker colors, that's where we're expecting lots of rain and we could see hourly rainfall rates of an inch we'll talk more about the storm and look at the rest of today's forecast in just a bit. >> thank you. heading overseas, now the cia director is expected to meet with top officials from israel and qatar this weekend, trying to broker a deal to release all 130 hostages still being held in

gaza nbc's matt bradley is in tel aviv with more what is the latest on that effort >> reporter: yeah, peter, so the cia chief is going to be headed to france to meet with his counterparts from israel and egypt, as well as the prime minister of qatar. so the idea here is to jump-start these stalled negotiations on freeing those last remaining more than 100 hostages, six of whom are americans. peter, this is going to be a tough trip, because the hamas says said they're not going to free hostages unless israel agrees to a complete cease-fire, something they've totally ruled out. separately, the u.s. has said that they are halting financing to the u.n. relief and works agency, the main body in charge of providing aid to the palestinian people this comes after israel accused a dozen or more employees of having actually participated in those october 7th terror attacks. now, in response, they said they had fired those employees. but this is likely to really

deepen the already profound distrust between israel and the united nations >> a lot of new pressure on the united nations refugee program speaking of the united nations, the international court of justice yesterday ordered israel to take steps to limit civilian casualties in gaza, and to prevent genocide what kind of impact could that have >> reporter: yeah, peter, this is a momentous decision, but it really is unlikely to have any immediate observable effect on the fighting in the gaza strip as you mentioned, the court told israel to prevent genocide but stopped short of demanding they stop their incursion into the gaza strip, which has already killed 26,000 people, most of them civilians, this according to the hamas-run gazan ministry of health. >> matt, thank you for the first time since that big hole blew open in the side of an alaska airlines yet,

the boeing max 9 planes are back in the skies nbc's senior correspondent, tom costello, has more >> reporter: alaska flight 1146, seattle to san diego was the first max 9 to return to flight as alaska gradually reintroduces all of its inspected 9s. >> we expect within a week our entire 65 airplanes or close to that should be up back in full service. >> reporter: united plans to start flying its max 9s this sunday both airlines say passengers who don't want to fly the max 9 can re-book without penalty. the aircraft type is usually on the reservation and ticket it was three weeks ago that the door plug on alaska flight 1282 blew out over portland these passengers were on board. >> it was very cold, but everything was rushing out we just had the roar. >> reporter: investigators are looking at whether the door plug was ever bolted in place, as

on trial for involuntary manslaughter. jennifer crumbley was accused of ignoring glaring warning signs her son was about to snap. we have jesse kirsch in pontiac, michigan. >> reporter: peter, good morning. this is the first time a parent is being put on trial in connection with his or her child's mass shooting. prosecutors argue that jennifer and james crumbley shared the blame for ethan crumbley's rampage. both charged with involuntary manslaughter. jennifer was the first to go on trial this week. ethan crumbley killed four classmates at oxford high school in november of 2021. prosecutors argue his parents, james and jennifer crumbley are also responsible for the massacre. >> first, it did not seem real. >> the prosecutor testifying friday after several messages. prosecutors portraying jennifer

as a negligent mother. testifying in march of 2021 that the shooter took a picture of a demon asking his mother. >> can you text back. >> reporter: around the time the shooter sent those messages, prosecutors say his parents were out riding horses. his mother calling. >> an hour and a half after the text. that was a 19-second call? >> correct. >> reporter: hours before the rampage, prosecutors showing jennifer crumbley saw the hand written note saying help me with a drawing of a gun. after the meeting at the school, jennifer crumbley contacted someone about a horse before messaging her son. >> you know you can talk to us. we won't judge. it says i care. i know. thank you. i'm sorry for that. i love you. >> reporter: by the time jennifer responded, more than half an hour later, the witnesses say the shooting had already begun.

good morning. thanks for joining us on this saturday, january 2th. i'm kira klapper. oakland's largest private employer is telling its workers to stay inside the office for lunch and breaks. this is in response to all the crime in oakland. the recommendations came in the form of a memo to kaiser employees. staff at the downtown oakland headquarters urged to make changes to their daily routines. blue shield of california also with head equarters in oakland says it is now paying for ride-shares for its employees. also offering garage parking and private security to address crime concerns. downtown oakland has workers divided. >> i think it's a bit of an overreaction. i have heard, you know, some co-workers victims of some crime, but it's been, like, maybe once a year, something like that.

>> oakland police tell us it plans on increasing downtown patrols and also coordinating increased security with kaiser. and it is championship weekend. let's turn to cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. >> sure is. it's the last saturday of the month. good morning, kira and good morning everyone. start by taking a look at temperatures. a bit chilly with 47 degrees for santa rosa and calistoga and over in danville. 50s on the map. 53 in san mateo. 53 fremont and 56 in scotts valley. a storm system passing the bay area towards the california-oregon border. just a few stray showers made it into parts of sonoma and mendocino county. stormranger picking up on that activity, fizzling out especially parts of clover kahle 101 up into ukiah. rest of is seeing x-ray clouds throughout the day.
