>> complete coverage with a live interview with national security correspondent john kirby. but we will start in jordan. keir simmons is here. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. this morning iran is attempting to distance itself from this attack, saying it does not send orders to what it calls resistance groups. an iranian proxy is being blamed. for the killing of three americans here in jordan, risking the kind of escalation between iran and the u.s. that's long been feared. this morning, the biden administration vowing to take all necessary action after an unmanned drone strike sent by iran-backed military groups. three u.s. soldiers were killed, the first american fatalities from hostile fire since war broke out between israel and hamas on october 7th. another major escalation.

in a region already in turmoil. and u.s. central command said more than 30 were wounded in the attack. in northeast jordan, on a remote base on the border with syria and iraq, called tower 22, eight personnel were evacuated to higher-level care. president biden yesterday leading a moment of silence, and promising an american response. >> we had a tough day last night in the middle east. we lost three brave souls in an attack on one of our bases. and we shall respond. >> reporter: the base that can be seen by satellite is tasked with fighting the remnants of isis. and limiting iran's reach in syria. two u.s. officials told nbc news a drone packed with explosives had struck american troops as they slept, it's the latest and deadliest attack on u.s. forces facing conflicts with iran-backed groups on multiple fronts. it targeted three u.s. bases on sunday, partly in revenge for israel's military campaign in gaza.

with america locked in a escalating confrontation with the houthis in yemen, the houthis praising the stalgts fatal troops. senator lindsey graham, writing i'm calling on the biden administration to strike targets of significance inside iran. hit iran now. hit them hard. in a region already rocked by events in israel and gaza, the u.s. poured founding to a major un agency after israel said some of its staff participated on hamas terror attacks on israel on october 7th. the u.n. saying it has fired nine staffers as the investigation continues. and savannah, the pentagon says that u.s. forces in iraq and syria have been attacked 160

times by iran-backed groups since october. the biden administration has been trying to negotiate a cease-fire in gaza and warning iran not to escalate but today in this region u.s. allies are warning of further instability while condemning what they're calling a terrorist attack, savannah. >> keir simmons, thank you. we're joined by john kirby, spokesperson for the national security council. admiral, good morning to you, sir. >> thank you. thanks for having me. >> we heard the president say we shall respond to these latest attacks. there have been, as we just heard, more than 160 attacks against u.s. interests and its allies' interests since october 7th. the u.s. has responded, being completely undeterred. should we expect a more stepped up response in response to this latest attack, which led to american casualties? >> i can tell you we're reviewing our options right now about what the right next step here is, savannah, and what the response needs to look like. obviously we're now in different territory here, with three americans killed and more than

30 wounded. by the way, our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this violence, certainly the families of those who got the worst possible news over the weekend. but we're taking a look real hard at what the options should be for a response. i won't get ahead of the president, but he takes seriously our obligation to defend ourselves and our troops and our facilities in the region. >> many republican lawmakers are calling for a devastating response against iran directly, including strikes inside iran. is retaliation inside iran on the table of options for this administration? >> well, i hope you can understand that i'm not going to get ahead of the president and talk about what the options will be. he said we will respond. we absolutely will. we will do it in a time and a manner of our choosing, certainly. but obviously this requires a

response. an inter view taped, yesterday, he doesn't believe iran wants war with the u.s. is that the president's view? has anything about that changed? >> i think, look, as he said, we communicated directly to iran what we expect here to see. obviously, these attacks keep coming. we will keep looking at the options. i can't speak for the supreme leader or what he wants or he doesn't want. i can tell you what we want. what we want is a stable, secure, prosperous middle east, and we want these attacks to stop. that means we have options ahead of us and we will have to work our way through that. >> how do you calibrate a response to iran that is decisive and convincing and deterring but that also does not draw the u.s. into this conflict even more deeply? >> that's what the national security leadership at this level really requires, savannah. it is how do you look after your

interest in the region. and, clearly, we don't have an interest in some broader regional conflict or going to war in the middle east again. and those are the tough decisions that the commander in chief has to make, certainly at this time and place and he'll do that. he's working his way through what the right options need to look like. >> let's talk about israel and gaza. the cia director has been meeting with all the relevant parties, calling for a deal for the return of hostages in exchange for a lengthier ceasefire. you've said, i believe, that nothing is imminent. has there been significant progress on the deal? are we closer than we've been before? >> i would tell you these discussions have been constructive. i've described them as sober and serious, certainly that, but i think it's fair to say they've been constructive. we have been actively engaged with qatar, with egypt, with israel. and i think we've made some progress here. i want to be careful. i don't want to come across as too sanguine here. i don't think we have a deal

that's imminently about to happen or that we can announce. but i do think we have made some progress here. if we can get this in place, a more humanitarian extended pause, we can actually get all the hostages out. we can get all the -- not all, but a lot more aid in, and we can get the violence down there, which can have a dramatic impact on the civilian casualties. there is an awful lot of promise here, but there is also an awful lot of discussion and diplomatic work that still has to be done. >> finally, the u.s. has suspended aid momentary to the un relief agency in gaza after accusations that members of the un agency were connected to hamas and in one case participated in the attack on israel on october 7th. what is the proper response if these allegations are verified? and what does that mean in terms of the humanitarian crisis in gaza as well, as this is the main agency administrating aid there. >> yes. the u.n. release and works

agency, unrwa has it's called colloquially, they've been doing amazing work on the ground in gaza, literally helping save thousands of lives. they're taking this seriously. they brought the information to us, by the way. they let us know they had this report of a dozen employees somehow involved on october 7th. they are taking this seriously. they called for an investigation. and they made it clear they are going to hold anybody appropriately accountable to include criminal prosecutions. i don't want to get ahead of that investigation and that process. you're right, savannah. we suspended our funding pending the results of that investigation. let's see where it goes and we'll make the appropriate policy decisions going ahead. but i do think it's important to remember that unrwa does important work across the region, certainly in gaza. they have helped save thousands of lives and we shouldn't impugn the good work of a whole agency because of the just terrible allegations lobbied against a

small number of their employees. >> certainly not. but does that create a trust issue and credibility issue there? >> it could depending on what the investigation finds and what unrwa does about the investigation results. so i think we have decision points that we will have to make going forward here. but i don't want to get ahead of the investigation and what it's going to find. >> admiral kirby, glad to have you with us this morning, thank you. >> yes, ma'am. >> also this morning, we are following several developments in the border battle, including a potential bipartisan deal to overhaul immigration policies that's dominating conversations on capitol hill and on the campaign trail. guad venegas is joining us now from eagle pass, texas. >> reporter: good morning. deal. as the influx of migrants continues, washington hoping a deal to stem the tide could be close. >> if that bill were in law today, i would fix the border

will now be back in a south carolina courtroom, trying to get his highly publicized six-week case retried. >> specific evidence about what was said, when it was said. >> the judge overseeing the hearing, a former state supreme justice laid out basic ground rules for exploring scathing accusations that the clerk of court, becky hill, tampered with the jury and debated with murdaugh's attorneys about who should be testifying. with the defense hoping to bring in alternates. >> these people are witnesses to what the court said to the juror who deliberated. >> our focus will be on the jurors that heard this case. >> one juror writing in a sworn affidavit, hill told them not to be fooled by the evidence presented by mr. murdaugh's attorneys and also look at his actions and look at his that h. 10 other jurors did not make those accusations in their affidavits. one didn't submit one movements, which i understood to

was believable and the kennel video definitely played a major part in his testimony. >> reporter: now, later today, guys, the jurors will be brought in one by one and questioned by the judge. we know that they are not going to be showing their faces, but their voices will be broadcast it is worth noting that this clerk of court position is an elected job. generally involving administrative duties and jury logistics. it is definitely not supposed to include conversations about the case back to you. >> sam brock for us there in columbia, south carolina. sam, thank you let's get more, nbc's legal correspondent laura jarrett here, so this is a very, very high bar the defense would have to meet to get a new trial lay it out for us. >> yeah. they have their work cut out for them the judge wants to bring in each juror and question them individually did you have any contact with becky hill and did that conduct influence your did that influence how you thought about the case? it is on that second prong they

did that influence how you thought about the case it is on that second prong they will have a lot of trouble >> let's talk about becky hill for a second her name has come up before. she has other accusations against her. will that play in this >> she says none of that happened by the way it all hinges on one juror that did participate in deliberations who said she heard things -- she or he. we don't know yet. heard things but the problem is she doesn't say she's influenced by hill she says she or he was influenced by other jurors that's part of deliberations that's what happens at trials. so she wasn't influenced or he wasn't influenced by hill, that's going to be a problem for them that's why it is so tough. >> what do murdaugh's attorneys have to do what do they have to prove to get a new trial? >> they have to show some actual influence or bias. some actual prejudice. that's where i think they're going to have a tough road and we'll see what happens someone could get on the stand and say something we haven't heard. we have to at least open that possibility. it is different when you are being questioned by a judge. we'll see what happens today >> laura, thank you very much. when we come back on a monday morning, chilling new

steph, good morning. >> good morning to you guys. the 77-year-old has been struggling with things like her memory and concentration, according to court documents now jay leno is asking a judge to be appointed the conservator of her estate, a move he says is necessary to take care of his wife of more than four decades jay leno is taking steps to protect his long-time wife as she battles dementia on friday the 73-year-old filed for conservatorship of his wife's estate, a form of legal guardianship over an adult, seeking to manage her finances, including creating a trust for her in case of her own death. while it is unclear when she was first diagnosed with dementia, the filing state she has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several c of executing the estate plan. according to a doctor's report from november, mavis suffers

from impairments to her concentration and memory, including her ability to recognize familiar faces. the cdc estimates there are more than five million people in the u.s. years and that her current by 2060, that number is expected to skyrocket to 14 million. >> when a loved one is having difficulty making decisions most of the time, especially making decisions that pose a risk to their own safety, that's when it is required really to take on that role as a decision maker on their behalf. >> leno has often talked about his dedicated marriage to mavis. >> always marry your conscience, marry the person you wish you could be >> known for her work on behalf of women in afghanistan, the couple, a staple at hollywood on red carpets and events even on set, during jay's storied run as host of the tonight show back in 2022, when jay suffered severe burns from a garage hire, he opened up to hoda about heading home to his wife before checking himself into the hospital. >> why did you decide to go home and stay home for that night

this is really something that you put into place if you don't have an estate plan. that is the situation here, the legal guardianship of an conversations that you are not e their affairs or to designate someone to do that perhaps most famously, britney spears and her father in recent memory there are a couple kinds one is the limited where you are just having control over finances the full conservatorship gives someone the same rights and responsibilities over another adult, as a parent would have over a child according to smartasset.com. >> if you're in this situation how would you set one up who decides whether it's granted? >> it is a legal process, savannah you have to file a petition with the courts and it's cumbersome. you have to have lawyers the individual needs to have their own attorney their family members need to be notified as we're seeing, it becomes a part of the public record that's how we're learning about the leno situation experts we talk to say you really want to consider an estate plan. you don't want to wait until you

have been incapacitated because of old age or illness or in this case, dementia diagnosis. estate plan. >> let's say you see this and say, let's go. >> no one wants to have this conversation but we have to think, life is fragile. things can change in an instant. it doesn't take a dementia diagnosis for things to be upended. if you have this conversation ahead of time you're saving your loved ones a lot of heart ache during what would be a tough time anyway and potentially fighting with the family otherwise, it is all left up to the courts if you don't prepare. it goes through the laws in your state and the courts decide who makes these decisions for you. we talked with the national fiduciary council for the fiduciary trust company international. i had to write that down i didn't want to get that wrong. she says basically starts with a will it determines who gets what and, if you have kids, who gets those kidskids, who gets those who are the guardians. revisit that will. who you decided maybe ten years ago that you wanted to raise your kids, could be someone different today.

then you want to have three important powerful legal documents attached to your will. first a durable power of attorney this assigns the person to make legal decisions if you cannot. important power. then a health care proxy this is the person who says, if you are incapacitated, should we get that surgery? do we want to have this procedure? you are giving them the power to do that. it can be different from who is your power of attorney, by the way. and finally, the living will this is a document that states specifically what kind of medical interventions you want to have in case of a life-support situation, a life-sustaining situation. >> is the idea if you had done these things in advance, you might not have to get to this conservatorship step, much more cumbersome if you wanted to get started today, what do you do? >> maybe you have gone to a financial planner, but really you want to handle it through a trust and estate lawyer because these are powerful legal

documents. you don't want to do-it-yourself these days you have gen zs and millennials in relationships that maybe are not married if something happens, you might want your partner to make these decisions for you, but the state law says, no, it will be your mom, dad or siblings you want to make sure those documents are in order you can do this for around $1,000 or $1,500 it's a small investment really to save a lot of heart ache later on and you have three resources the alzheimer's association and aarp have all kinds of documents and questionnaires so you can get the conversation started with your family and know where to go. >> some are things we haven't done. >> i know. >> it is like a checklist of things to do. >> important conversations >> the law does not yet recognize the situationship. all right. over to you. >> thanks, guys. we talked earlier about the warmup out west. with this huge ridge and the jet stream, we'll be seeing those high temperatures about 15 to 2. seattle will break a record at

>> it's been brilliant and hard and overwhelming it's -- i think anyone -- i think moving house is hard enough moving children, moving schools. and then picking it up and going so far from everything that they know from our life in los angeles has been -- it's been a real challenge, you know it's been tough. but at the same time, immensely rewarding. and -- and we're very happy. it only really feels - we moved in sort of late june, early july, and it only kind of at christmastime started to feel like, okay, well, this is where we are. >> in a rhythm how about repotting for you? how's that been? >> honestly, i haven't sort of really given that huge amount of thought. so we have children of similar age. and you're only as happy as your least happy child. so, really, it's been about trying to not leave. this is kind of the first time -- the second time,

actually, that i left to come to america since we moved back. just trying to be there for them and help them sort of navigate all of the bumps that have come our way. you know >> i think what's beautiful about this new chapter in your life, this show, is you are asking questions in a way that i haven't heard them asked, which is interesting. you are like, who is the person you want to talk about like framing something that way just allows somebody to gush about the thing that means the most to them. >> yeah. well, each week the guests will choose a place, a possession, a piece of music, a memory, a place, a memory. and what is the other one? >> memory, places, people, possessions, music. >> that's it realized is that t- when people are talking about things that they love and that are significant in and they -- and they -- and what i realized is that the people -- when people are talking about

things that they love and that are significant in their life, they open up in a different way. so if you are talking about a piece of music or a favorite song, you're immediately sort of all of us in the car, listening to the radio, you hear a thing and you're transported back to that moment in your life and why it's significant so really what we're doing is talking about quite incredible people's lives, but framing it within a world of them talking about things that are significant. >> oh, it is brilliant and i love the guest list that you have. >> yeah. >> i feel like people lined up to be on this show who is your first one out of the gate >> we have jeremy renner, kim kardashian, martin scorsese, david beckham, dr. dre, julian moore, billy porter, kris jenner. yeah, it goes on and on. >> and you do them all in person. there's something about that. >> i think it has to be in person i really do. look, all of us making shows like this spent a lot of time talking to people on zoom.
