>> yes, of course he loves you he just -- he just doesn't show it on his face or with his body language. >> gru, i need a word with you your family's lives are at stake.ped from prison. >> i'm coming for my revenge. >> that can't be good for our news. this 4th of july release mark is going to make a lot of money. our sister company universal pictures are pictures are excited for that to hit theaters on july 3rd next up, taylor swift. let's do some math we talked about this earlier now that travis is heading to the super bowl in nevada, fans online are losing their mind trying to figure out how she will get from the february 10th concert in tokyo, japan, to the big game on february 11th. one tiktoker breaks it down. >> taylor's show starts at 6:00 p.m. and will get down around 10:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m. in tokyo, japan is 5:00 a.m. of the same day in las vegas, nevada where the super bowl will be nonstop flying from tokyo to los vegas would probably be about 12
8:22 am
hours. if taylor leaves tokyo by midnight on saturday, she could get back to las vegas by 7:00 p.m. on saturday, which gets her there in plenty of time for the game on sunday so if the chiefs do make it -- >> it's like an s.a.t. question, if taylor swift leaves tokyo -- >> are we pretending that she flies commercial >> she goes off the stage right into her jet. >> she'll be fine. she'll be there. >> that is math mathing for sure another user online joking this will be taylor on february 10th so she can be sure to make it to the super bowl on time >> it's a sped up video of her trying to rush through it. kind of hard to see on television yeah, my fault read a little bit better. next up, david letterman ise getting in on the swelce love on his thoughts on the buzz as i the relationship, on social media with one slight mixup.
8:23 am
>> nonsense and ugliness, here's taylor swift, a growing bright light of goodness in the world, and she starts dating kelsey grammer, and the people go crazy, and they say no, don't bother us, we're all caught up in football, we don't want taylor in football and the taylor swift people, the swifties, are saying, oh, we don't want a footballer in here with kelsey grammer. and i'm saying -- >> travis kelce. >> right, travis kelce >> i think he did that on purpose. >> 100%. >> oprah, uma. next up, justin timberlake over the weekend, the star hit studio, musical guest and popped in to crash dakota johnson's monologue. >> if you want me to be in it happened mostly before. >> she has a good line next. sketches, i have -- i have
8:24 am
hosted before. >> she has a good line next. she goes, but that was ten years ago. j.t. also performing a new song called "sanctify." taye days after he dropped new music with a singl track "selfish" ignited the to stream britney spears army, urging them to stream her song, also called "selfish" in 2011. the goal was to overtake justin's single on the streaming charts spears' 13-year old track briefly did just that on itunes over the weekend and then in a new post overnight, we're seeing that spears seems to respond to that fan push while referencing controversial comments in her mémoire about justin her past relationship. she wrote a long video i want to apologize for some of the things i wrote about in my book if i offended some of the people that i genuinely care about, i'm deeply sorry i also want to say i'm in love with justin's new song justin's. it is so good. how come every time i see justin and jimmy together, i laugh so hard p.s. "sanctify" is wow, too. >> a lot to unpack there
8:25 am
seems like she doesn't want the fan army to be going after j.t. >> she didn't want to think the fan army was speaking for how she feels. >> she likes the song. >> but i have no idea. finally pharrell a brand new project, or at least he does to be happy about. the 13-time grammy winne announcing that the story of his life will be explored in a new movie made by lego he shared on social medi who would have thought that playing with lego bricks as a kid would evolve into a movie about my life. it is proof you can do it, too "piece by piece. that project is expected to hit theaters this october. from our sister company focus features >> another winner. all right. just ahead, james cordon, the master of late night has an exciting new show. >> come on in. >> how nice to see you >> come on in. >> we're huggers >> hi! >> how are you doing >> nice to see you. >> how are you >> we only have a second that's all we got. we can't wait to talk about your sirius xm show
8:26 am
he's got such great guest. they're lining up, knocking on the door, trying to get on. >> yes, it's quite surprising, but lovely, yeah >> we can't wait we will talk a lot about it. we will have that and more after your local news. good morning to you. it is 8:26. i'm kris sanchez. oakland leaders today will help break ground on a new project that will help with safety on the downtown corridor. these are the renderings for the 14th street project. it will add safety and islands. the project is about to take a year and a half to complete.
8:27 am
today's groundbreaking is scheduled for noon at the plaza. i want to get a look at the forecast because we can't get enough of it, kari. it's gorgeous. >> it's going to be a beautiful day, highs in the 70s and sunshine. tomorrow is not bad either, but we're going to have to spend part of the day to prep for the incoming rain we'll have starting wednesday morning. when it gets here, it will be windy and temperatures will be dropping. we'll continue to see the rain through the end of the week, on-and-off showers. only in the mid-50s for the highs. there may be another storm behind it. we'll be watching out for the rain chances throughout the week. >> a little bit of a roller coaster, kind of like the niners game. we have more local news coming up in a half hour. we hope you can join us.

not just any whiteboard... ...katie porter's whiteboard is one way she's: [news anchor] ...often seen grilling top executives of banks, big pharma, even top administration officials. katie porter. never taken corporate pac money - never will. leading the fight to ban congressional stock trading. and the only democrat who opposed wasteful “earmarks” that fund politicians' pet projects. katie porter. focused on your challenges - from lowering housing costs to fighting climate change.
8:30 am
shake up the senate - with democrat katie porter. i'm katie porter and i approve this message. it is our favorite place. we are on the plaza. we are kicking off a new week. jimmy, did you see these ladies
8:31 am
right here? celebrating a birthday, 60. very cool, very cool. >> you don't look 60. >> no, good to see you all. >> we got a we're back half hour, including james cordon, who we just saw a few moments ago. he left the world of late night. now he's ready for his next big endeavor, fascinating new way to learn about your favorite celebrities. and what shaped them before the fame can't wait to hear about it. >> also ahead, guys, adrianna brach is here with our first "today bestsellers" of 2024, y'all. can you believe it i know oh, what is that it's like a rowing machine of some sort. anyway, we've got rowing machines and leggings and sweaters and all kinds of things so are those tumblers. everybody is walking around with that big water tank. >> 40 gallon. >> there you go. >> you didn't know that was a rowing machine
8:32 am
>> it's a senior moment. >> have you done connections yet. it is national puzzle day today. we have the mastermind behind it here that's wyna liu. we will pick her brain on the game's popularity and hopefully get some hints to solve today's connection. all right. it is also time to start planning your spring break get-away coming up on the 3rd hour, dream vacations you can take on a budget, including the u.s. city where you can find a taste of ireland. >> first, how about the weather? >> i'd love to do the water. not too bad. the rain is gone in the northeast. some light snow showers. sunny and dry along the gulf coast. record high temperatures out west as we get towards the middle of the week, we have a weak clipper system that's going to race through the great lakes, exit through virginia and north carolina by wednesday. a little rain. temperatures work right back in to the upper plains.
8:33 am
a big storm system will some isolated snow showers and then the high temperatures work right back in to the upper midwest, and northern plains a big storm system will bring this atmospheric river of moisture from the west coast from oregon into california. that will translate into rain. also some mountain snow. still looks pretty mild across the midwest going into the end of the week. and some snow showers s po good monday morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. today we'll have a beautiful day. temperatures near records, headed in the low 70s and mostly sunny. a few more clouds tomorrow, but still pretty mild. we to have a big storm that will be coming in on wednesday, continuing into friday. this could give us a lot of heavy rain, gusty winds, and the potential of flooding into the end of the week as the temperatures drop. we will have a dry day there you go and that's your latest forecast. savannah, back inside to you. >> guess what? february is almost here. that means it is time to announce a new read with jenna pick. let's go >> february is love month,
8:34 am
right? >> yes. >> so we have a rom-com. are you ready? it is "good material." by dolly alderton. and i love this book so much it is a fresh, comedic, funny love story and it starts at the end of a love, which is kind of different. by the way, "the new york times" calls dolly nora efron with a british twist. a lot of romantic comedies can feel cliche. not this one we meet andy his comedy career is struggling. he's lost his love, and he wants to know why. it is funny. it is about love, friendship, mid-life i hope y'all will read it with me. >> mid-life and romance. >> midlife and romanced-life, p. you know what i mean? >> that train is never late. i am 10 years older than you.
8:35 am
>> it is available to preorder right now. it is in stores tomorrow. head to your local indy store or scan that qr code. >> would this a little younger >> you know i never read them. i do i read them years later. >> i think you will really, really love it please read with us. it comes out tomorrow. you can preorder it now. >> thank you, jenna, who is exactly ten years younger than me. >> exactly. >> coming up, we will chat with james cordon about taking things up with a new show oh, on the rowing machine! >> does he want to row and read? >> why could i not think of what that was >> i don't know. you never used it. >> that's true but, first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:36 am
you want to see who we are as americans? i'm peter dixon and in kenya... we built a hospital that provides maternal care. as a marine... we fought against the taliban and their crimes against women. and in hillary clinton's state department... we took on gender-based violence in the congo. now extremists are banning abortion and contraception right here at home. so, i'm running for congress to help stop them. for your family... and mine. i approved this message because this is who we are.
8:37 am
welcome back for eight years, james cordon made us laugh as the host of "the late, late show." after taking some time off, he's ready to bring us something new,
8:38 am
a sirius xm showed called "this life of mine." interviews with a twist. james is asking guests with possessions that made them who you are. take a look. >> what is the possession that you want to talk about on the show >> titanium. >> which titanium specifically. >> it is the 15%, 20% of my body at this point. it will be with me forever >> these are titanium implants in your body. >> correct, a bunch of them, yeah recovery was like a one-way road. >> i so want to talk about this show because i'm so intrigued, james, with your style of interviewing i think it's brilliant. >> thanks. >> but i want to talk about something else to start off, which is repotting you pulled yourself out by your roots, you and your family sometimes when you are mid-air with your roots dangling, you k now you replanted, yourself, after you had a think, am i going to survive no now you replanted, yourself, after you had a certain lifestyle. how has that been for you?
8:39 am
>> it's been brilliant and hard and overwhelming it's -- i think anyone -- i think moving house is hard enough moving children, moving schools. and then picking it up and going so far from everything that they know from our life in los angeles has been -- it's been a real challenge, you know it's been tough. but at the same time, immensely rewarding. and -- and we're very happy. it only really feels - we moved in sort of late june, early july, and it only kind of at christmastime started to feel like, okay, well, this is where we are. >> in a rhythm how about repotting for you? how's that been? >> honestly, i haven't sort of really given that huge amount of thought. so we have children of similar age. and you're only as happy as your least happy child. so, really, it's been about trying to not leave. this is kind of the first time -- the second time,
8:40 am
actually, that i left to come to america since we moved back. just trying to be there for them and help them sort of navigate all of the bumps that have come our way. you know >> i think what's beautiful about this new chapter in your life, this show, is you are asking questions in a way that i haven't heard them asked, which is interesting. you are like, who is the person you want to talk about like framing something that way just allows somebody to gush about the thing that means the most to them. >> yeah. well, each week the guests will choose a place, a possession, a piece of music, a memory, a place, a memory. and what is the other one? >> memory, places, people, possessions, music. >> that's it realized is that t- when people are talking about things that they love and that are significant in and they -- and they -- and what i realized is that the people -- when people are talking about
8:41 am
things that they love and that are significant in their life, they open up in a different way. so if you are talking about a piece of music or a favorite song, you're immediately sort of all of us in the car, listening to the radio, you hear a thing and you're transported back to that moment in your life and why it's significant so really what we're doing is talking about quite incredible people's lives, but framing it within a world of them talking about things that are significant. >> oh, it is brilliant and i love the guest list that you have. >> yeah. >> i feel like people lined up to be on this show who is your first one out of the gate >> we have jeremy renner, kim kardashian, martin scorsese, david beckham, dr. dre, julian moore, billy porter, kris jenner. yeah, it goes on and on. >> and you do them all in person. there's something about that. >> i think it has to be in person i really do. look, all of us making shows like this spent a lot of time talking to people on zoom.
8:42 am
as we all did. nobody goes, this is the best way to communicate with someone. the conversations are intimate, the shows are all about 50 minutes long and people are really -- you know, tom ford opening up about his memory, which is the passing of his partner, richard, is so beautiful. i really couldn't imagine that i would ever get into it like that if we were talking about it on zoom. >> i love seeing this side of you. we are used to seeing you laughing on car pool karaoke all the rest this is such -- i know this is probably the majority of you it is fun to see it out there for everyone to enjoy. >> thanks. >> we can't wait for this. so you can catch this stuff right now on sirius xm, is that right? >> yes it launches on february 1st. the first guest is jeremy renner, obj, and then kim, and i'm very proud of it. >> it is a brilliant, brilliant show. i'm so happy that you came to see it. >> thank you. >> cheers. >> and, james, you will come
8:43 am
back on the fourth hour. you want a party? it is fun there, too. >> i'm just rowing. my gosh. this i and it will go on every week on i need a water tank. adrianna brach is here all kinds of best sellers coming up it is a lot harder than it looks, hoda. but, first, this is "today" on
8:44 am
you may know adam schiff's work to protect the rule of law, or to build affordable housing, or write california's patients bill of rights. but i know adam through the big brother program. we've been brothers since i was seven. he stood by my side as i graduated from yale, and i stood by his side when he married eve, the love of his life. i'm a little biased, but take it from adam's little brother. he'll make us all proud as california senator. i'm adam schiff and i approve this message.
8:45 am
best sellers we will share some of our favorite products of the month here with us adrianna brach. you can find everything by scanning the qr code at the bottom of the screen good morning. >> good morning! >> let's start with this exercise machine. >> everyone is talking about this. >> the rower okay, tell me about it. >> you were a little bit amused by it. it is not every day you see rower in the studio, right >> no! >> especially one this compact this is a shop today award-winner

it won a shop today award from 2023 look, it is so easy to use. >> very compact. >> it is so small, and it's lightweight, and it has this tracker so it tracks all your reps, all your calories. how much time you've been on it. we talked to our start today contributor. she said this was a good workout rowing indoors because it combines cardio and strength getting a full body workout. you can do it while you're watching your favorite tv show or football. so easy. >> let's get some cozy clothes here this is a cute sweatshirt. >> the internet is going crazy over these leggings. they're not alone because i personally love these. they're fleece-lined leggings. who doesn't need a pair of leggings in the winter that you can wear with anything in your closet. >> and they're warmer than your normal leggings. >> so warm warmer than your normal leggings, but they're not bulky or too warm. they've also got a version with pockets. they come in a bunch of a ton of different colors. you get your pick, and this is a great staple you will wear all winter long.

8:48 am

8:49 am
patterns and also comes with a charm, so you can get a personalized one with your initials on it. the charm can go anywhere. you can put it on the handle. it is all about keys. you're bedadlzzling your stanley. it is all about accessorizing like you would an outfit. >> my daughter named her stanley. >> that's great. they're taking on a life of their own. >> speaking of internet, this is probably going to go viral because this is our newest shop today. it is called the splatypus it is the kitchen yutensil you didn't know you needed it is so crazy but it's genius a jar spatula meant to help you get into every nook and cranny, so you never have to waste any of your spreads again. >> why is it superior to just a knife? >> because it's actually designed with a silicone tip that's bendy and flexible, and you can see it is a little tapered here at the end so you can really get in there. look at this all this peanut butter out >> that looks so satisfying. step aside i really want to do it.

couple of days have been, you know, just yikes and i just wanted to check in. are you okay >> she was nice about it. >> you know what a lot of us feel that way after playing connections, you know? of course, "the new york times" latest word game it is taking over the internet. and text circles. >> we figured because it's national puzzle day we decided to get the insid scoop from the mastermind behind it wynaliu is the creator people have access to you now. you know do you get that a lot? >> i -- >> they know who you are. >> it's very strange it's very strange. >> explain to people what connections is. before we start. >> it is a category matching game where you get a bunch of words and you have to sort them into groups. the categories can be straightforward like types of flowers or a little weirder like words that begin with body parts or something. >> yeah. it is a really funny it is thought provoking. some seem really hard. sometimes you're like, it's really easy. when you get that feedback, what do you think of that >> i feel like difficulty is very subjective. there's -- we do testing on each
8:54 am
of the boards. sometimes there is a score from 1 to 5 sometimes all testers rank them one, two, three, four, five on the same board it depends on what you know and what you see first. >> it depends on what you are familiar with. >> can we do today's is that possible we should tell people at home, we're going to do today's. >> spoiler alert but, listen, if you try to do it too fast, which is a pressure situation for me, if you try to do it too fast, then you might fall for the game. you're trying to trick people, are you not? >> that's exactly right. i feel like my best advice would probably be to like not guess and that usually takes a little bit more time. >> make sure you know. >> you guys keep chatting. are you looking at this? oh, my gosh. okay >> so -- >> so words start to stick out, right? like deuce so i'm thinking -- >> that could be tennis. >> pair, love, pair. >> deuce. >> couple. you have to look at everything first. >> oh, you do? okay, yes. >> it is hard to do with a time.
8:55 am
>> it's really hard with this. this is riveting. >> doing this on television, what is a good strategy? >> looking for synonymsynonym i see promote. i don't know if there's anything else that goes with promote. >> i see passion, plug, promote. >> plug-in, promote, push, and pitch. here we go, all right. >> i got one i know that. okay do some marketing. >> okay. and there is actually a very savannah category here. >> love, all, tennis, add, go. boom. >> you're good at this >> that was easier it gets harder, right? >> actually, the blue one was quite tricky in this. >> how did you get so obsessed with modularity and mechanisms >> i just think it's really cool how little pieces -- >> romantic twosomes >> couple, item, pair, thing sometimes i try to guess what the category is. words with root, bread, dread.
8:56 am
okay we did it! >> amazing >> record time. >> yay >> national puzzle day, you crushed it. >> oh, my gosh i'm so revealed. >> thank you so much thank you for supporting me. you know, we used to send each other our wordle scores every day. >> you can send this one now. now you can send connections people want to know, what do you play in order? >> i test some of the games, so i don't always get to play the best thing i heard is start with the mini. and take one of those five-letter words and use it as your wording start >> does that work, though? >> it's interesting. >> i start with the same wordle. >> yeah. love it. i love the mini, too wyna, you're my woman. thank you so much. keep it coming you can play connections every day in "the new york times" games app. good morning. it's 8:56. i'm kris sanchez.
