(vo) do you fargo? you can, with wells fargo. right now at 6:00, tracking the atmospheric river now zeroing in on the bay area. you can see on your screen it is headed our way, and we are now bracing for heavy rain, strong winds and potential flooding. and serious worries over hillsides sliding in the east
6:01 am
bay. how residents are racing to protect their homes this morning. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this wednesday morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez. we have live team coverage on this microclimate weather alert for you this morning. our bob redell is in the east bay with how residents are bracing for today's impact. but we want to start with meteorologist kari hall, who is leading our coverage. kari, some folks might be waking up this morning saying, what rain? but you say it's coming. >> right. we're at 6:00 in the morning. we do have a lot more of the day to go, and this storm will be closing in on the bay area. so we are expecting it to begin to ramp up during the afternoon, into the evening. we are going to see times of heavy rain and a flood watch in effect for today through friday. we're looking at about 3 to 5 inches of rainfall in the mountains and about 1 to 2 inches in total for the bay. gusty winds that may reach 40 to 50 miles per hour and even the chance of isolated thunderstorms for tomorrow. so here is a look at the storm
6:02 am
system as it continues to move in, with right now light rain in parts of the north bay, and northern sonoma county, up toward lake and mendocino counties, we're seeing that rain. and as of now it's widespread and light in those areas. but we are going to see the heavier rain continuing to move in later today. we'll have more of the timeline and what to expect coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. and that incoming storm will send a lot of water into our creeks, streams and rivers. it's also causing concern about potential flooding. >> that's what bob redell is watching for us. you're along alameda creek in niles canyon. are we expecting flood stage this time? >> reporter: fortunately, no, not during this storm. but it will come close. the alameda creek is behind me along highway 84 through niles canyon. you can't see it right now. it is very low. once this rain comes in, the
6:03 am
prediction is that this will hit 7.9 feet, which would be later tonight, early tomorrow morning. still shy of the 9 foot flood stage, so again we're not expecting flooding long the alameda creek here in niles canyon, but we are expecting it to get close. you might recall during last year's atmospheric rivers the alameda creek flooded highway 84, which runs along the waterway. we spoke with a gentleman who lives in this area. he expects there will be impacts through niles canyon, as there are often slides, mudslides that happen onto the road. niles canyon was closed for much of january last year because of storm damage. >> with mudslides and everything, yeah, it's dangerous. it's something thankfully our city has been capable of getting people out quick enough to let us know, shutting off the roads. >> reporter: we also spoke with pg&e, the utility says they have placed extra power poles and power lines in its yards in the
6:04 am
north bay, south bay and on the peninsula to respond to rain and wind damage if there is some. this is video posted by the oakland zoo of one of their elephants enjoying a snack in the light drizzle. the zoo will be closed today because of the storms. the zoo will issue refunds to toes who had reservations. reporting live in niles canyon, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bobb. as the storm rolls in, our nbc bay area app is a great resource to have, using stormranger to track that rain, providing the most accurate radar data right here in the bay area. you can also get those alerts sent straight to your phone. it's going to customize them for your neighborhood. download it if you haven't already done so. it is free on apple and google play stores. we want to check in with mike inouye for the roads. >> rain is not the issue. you can see we're zoomed in close to the pavement, north 101. what's moving better is the traffic flow. it looks great on this shot, not
6:05 am
so bad for 6:04. look at the extent of the backup as folks are coming in, slow starting at story road, passing the camera and continuing up to oakland road where i believe they have recently cleared the crash from the slow lane but there's speculator slowing. 87 holding steady and dry roads around the bay, except for the north bay. there's dampness, wet roadway showing up on the index. the bay bridge toll plaza, the earlier crash i believe has been cleared from the area. that's just past the area near the metering lights. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. developing right now, alameda county deputies are searching for a missing at-risk 13-year-old. brandon gonzalez was last seen around 4:30 yesterday afternoon leaving his home on bunny court in hayward. he has black hair, brown eyes. he was wearing a back t-shirt and pants. he was riding a black scooter are green handlebars and illuminated wheels.
6:06 am
his parents say he only has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old child. if you know where brandon is or see him, you're asked to contact the sheriff's office. new at 6:00, two san francisco supervisors are speaking out after each reportedly receiving disturbing threats in the mail. the "chronicle" reports supervisors aaron peskin and dean preston received threats of death and violence, and it included a message of that echoing a recently deleted twitter post made by local tech ceo gary tan, which he addressed to progressive city leaders. tan has since apologized for that post and claims he was referencing a tupac shakur song. while the mailers specifically indicate no threat, supervisors are already calling for the district attorney's office to investigate further and potentially take new action. an east bay city leader is stepping down citing recent
6:07 am
harassment and threats impacting her family. berkeley council member kate harrison yesterday announced her resignation and cites stress and exhaustion. she made that announcement yesterday. harrison is the second berkeley leader to step down within just the last few weeks. council member johnson also announced his resignation earlier this month, echoing similar sentiments. a special election to fill his seat is already scheduled for april 16th. harrison tells the "chronicle," she still plans to run for mayor. with super bowl lviii on the horizon, the niners are probably all good with team building, spending a lot of time together. that didn't stop them from getting out last night together, about ten of them sitting courtside at chase center where the warriors were hosting the 76ers. among the niners attending, george kittle, deebo samuel, trent williams. the niners got some vip treatment before the game, receiving some warriors jerseys.
6:08 am
before tip-off, the warriors stars, including steph curry, chris paul, all seen signing the jerseys. the niners don't resume practice until tomorrow, so they may have a chance to sleep in today. whatever the case, they must have inspired the warriors who beat the 76ers, snapping a two-game losing streak. we now know the color scheme for the super bowl. the niners will be wearing their white road uniforms and the chiefs will wear the home red. that's the same look from the previous super bowl matchup between the two in february of 2020. no need to remind everyone. we know how that turned out. different day, new turnout. >> that's right. a do-over. let's head to pacifica where there is a high surf advisory that is going to go into effect later today, lasting through tomorrow. the weather could bring in dangerous sneaker waves, rip
6:09 am
currents and waves up to 26 feet. it's tempting to look, but please keep your distance and make sure you have your pets on a leash and keep the kids back as well. the peak of the waves will be tomorrow morning. do not turn your back to the water. meteorologist kari hall is tracking high surf, but also the rest of what this storm is going to bring. i'm going to take you from the coast to the sierra, where we do have a winter storm warning in effect, and it's all of these areas shaded in pink, as we are expecting gusty winds and low visibility, as well as the possibility of downed trees, and issues with power for the sierra. now, we've seen a lot of the previous storms come down as rain, then change over to snow. but it does look like with this being a colder storm, we could see much more snow coming in, and the possibility of about 5 to over a foot of snow for kirkwood and in kingvale, but then going ahead, additional snowfall will be possible for the weekend into next week, in total over the next week we could see potentially 50 inches of snow for some of those ski
6:10 am
resorts. so really great to see hopefully more snowpack that will help catch us up to normal. we'll be tracking that, as well as bay area rain in that timeline. mike has a look at some lower prices around the bay for gas. >> we're looking at some pretty good situations like in contra costa county. if you're in concord, all ten of that county's top ten are in the city of concord. we'll shout out national on clayton road. that's the $3.65 at the top here. to the south bay, it's north star with $3.73 on west camel avenue. and north of there, we're looking at san mateo county, the lowest we could find is $4.09. it's at a&a gas on holly street right off 101, like a block off the freeway. that's reported through gasbuddy.com. on the roadways, a pretty smooth drive. we still have a lot of slowing for north 101 up to oakland road where the crash is on the shoulder. we just saw the speed sensors
6:11 am
improve but it's still slow through the stretch. back to you. we have a new option for you when it comes to flying out of the north bay. the new partnership and when you can catch the first flight. in washington, a powerful senate committee tries to keep kids safe on social media. let's go out to the futures this morning. we've been setting record after record. it looks like at least the dow will squeak ahead with some gains. well, chances are you've never seen a newborn great white shark. that's about to change. stay right here because we're going to look at what could possibly be the first ever image when we come back. >> i'm going to stay back. >> we're going to move you forward.
6:12 am
6:13 am
6:14 am
good wednesday morning. the time is 6:14. we are under a microclimate weather alert as we get ready for rain coming in. but in livermore it's going to take a while before it gets going. we're starting out sunny and only a slight chance of rain through early afternoon, but then ramping up this evening. we'll take a look at all of our microclimates and the timeline coming up. the rain not here yet on the peninsula, but the traffic flow northbound with taillights, where we had the crash release, the backup in san jose, i saw a lot of traffic traveling north
6:15 am
through palo alto. the bay bridge is moving smooth. there's wind. we're talking about the weather. good morning. very happy wednesday to you. lawyers for 23andme will be meeting with lawyers leading a class action suit against the company. if you're thinking to yourself, hold up, 74 cents a share, 23andme is having a time of it. danger of being de-lifted from the nasdaq. paypal is laying off again, announced yesterday, 2,500 jobs. about 300 at the san jose headquarters. reports of layoff after layoff is especially frustrating because the fed today is going to talk about the economy as it talks about its two-day interest rate meeting at 11:00 our time, and it's all been good news outside the bay area. we got that soft landing we were hoping for. startling news for elon musk, the delaware chancellory says a series of bonuses he was
6:16 am
awarded by tesla should not have been awarded. his deal was worth $56 billion, and the court says he came about it illegitimately because he influenced the board that awarded it to him. nobody in all of history that i'm aware of, anyway, has been told you are now $56 billion poorer. then again, nobody has ever been offered a bonus that added up to $56 billion. now, a lot of tesla shareholders say that was worth it. musk only got the money if he grew the company bigger than anybody could have imagined, and he did. now, with this loss, will musk stay at tesla? does tesla really need musk? stay tuned. also today, five ceos of social networks will testify before the powerful senate judiciary committee about their fight against child sexual exploitation online. we've seen testimony from a lot of ceos, this is the tiktok ceo
6:17 am
testifying before congress back in march. an executive at a security company that provides tools to help parents protect kids says she's frustrated by the sort of rinse and repeat sort of pattern we're seeing out of washington. >> the five witnesses that are being called, the tech ceos, i believe are going to give us a lot more of the same. i wish that weren't the case, but they will be touting the efforts, their safety efforts of what they have rolled out, without owning up to the fact that what they have rolled out is not enough and, honestly, smoke and mirrors. >> the head of tiktok, facebook, x, snap and discord will all testify starting at 7:00 our time. something lighter, our friend and colleague, joanna stern was on cnbc showing off the apple vision pro headset that can make you feel like you're in hawaii or in your office working. she did a review in the "washington post," and as you can see, wore them on air.
6:18 am
>> you look good. >> you look like an alien. >> you see my eyes? >> i see your eyes. you can see me? >> i can see you great. i'm also working right now and watching some youtube, but i'm really looking at both of you right now. >> if i could watch youtube and work, that would be fun. a lot of people have said there's no killer app yet. what do we do with these? >> it's a lot of money. >> it's a lot of money. and somebody online said, you remember your parents told you not to sit too closely to the television? and now you're sitting super close to the tv now. but apparently it's okay for your eyes. >> i saw the commercial for this over the weekend, and it's cool looking in one way, but then the other way, it looks so distracting. the guy had his googles on, it was just like a lot going on at one time. >> i hope you wouldn't even read your phone if you're eating breakfast with your child. >> i guess you can do them both. it still looked like a lot. >> you could just watch tv.
6:19 am
it's already there. and you can find us on all of your streaming platforms, too. 6:18 right now. new at 6:00, a new flight option being added and this is going to be to and from the north bay. avelo airlines announced that it will call the charles m. schultz sonoma county airport home. it's going to happen may 1st with two boeing next generation 737 aircrafts based there. so the partnership is expected to bring about 50 new jobs to the region. this will be avelo's seventh facility. this is based out of houston. i just looked that up. i had never heard of this. >> me neither. always nice to have options. trending this morning, what could be the first ever images of a newborn baby shark. wildlife filmmaker shared images from his drone camera. this was from a trip back in
6:20 am
july of last year. the small shark was white all over and spotted roughly 1,000 feet from the beach in santa marbra. its age means it was likely born in shallow waters. many schoolers believe great whites are born farther out at sea. great white sharks in endangered species. >> i've always been really attracted to the most dangerous animals, because when they're babies i think they're so cute. that's not why i like you. who said i like you? >> are you going to delete that? [ laughter ] >> just kidding. it is 6:20. we all like kari. when you talk about a forecast like we're expecting, sometimes we question that. i'm just kidding! >> making friends. >> i'm full of it this morning. >> you're about to get booted. >> i'll just move on. [ laughter ]
6:21 am
>> ouch! >> we're starting out with some light rain this morning, but it will get heavier as we go into tonight, and also we'll have gusty winds and potentially some really high waves along the coastline. so we're watching out for all of that, but the shower chances linger into tomorrow, with even a chance of thunderstorms. and then for the weekend there will be a brief break, with some spotty showers, but then the next storm coming in on sunday. so let's take a look at the wide view of the storm system coming in. you've probably seen this on your screen, already seeing a lot of green, that's moving into far northern california, into parts of the north bay. we're seeing a steady rain from ukiah to santa rosa, and then it's more spotty as you head farther south. but already a bit of a wet commute for parts of the north bay. the rest of the bay area will be waiting a while. as we see the rain arriving, the wind will pick up. a look at our hour-by-hour wind
6:22 am
gust forecast, at 10:00 we're seeing the winds rushing in from the south, and we could see those winds up to anywhere from 30 to possibly 45 miles per hour. and then it gets even stronger for the coastline into the afternoon, when that rain picks up we could see steady wind gusts that will be with us throughout the evening at 50 miles per hour. so you want to make sure everything around the home is ready for winds like that. we also will have the potential of this downing some trees. the ground is already saturated, and as the next round of rain comes in, it will get heavier for the afternoon into the evening, but for many of us in the south bay, it's going to take a while before it really gets going, and also in the tri-valley. farther to the north, from san francisco to the north bay, that rain will continue for hours and then really pick up later this evening before it eventually tapers off to some spotty rain that will be in and out of the bay area throughout the day tomorrow. and as far as how much we could see here, about 1 to 2 inches,
6:23 am
maybe a little higher in some spots. once we see this give us a break and head farther to the east, the next storm will be coming in for the end of the weekend and continuing into next week, with yet again another atmospheric river. so it's going to be busy here. we're going to see waves of rain, the potential of flooding, as well as much cooler temperatures. it was nice to have the 60s and 70s. we don't see any of that in the forecast. on sunday we only make it up to 50 degrees and we'll see about the same temperatures in san francisco. mike, you were tracking the recovery for 101. >> what i thought was going to be recovery for 101. it's looking a little better for speeds, but still slow along the stretch. activity on the shoulder, north 101 at oakland road. this is not clear yet and we should see that next build in the next 15 minutes, so i'm a little concerned there won't be a chance for recovery and that may mean people will head over toward 280 and up 87. we know we'll see slowing before the end of our show. we'll see if it's shifted at all for the timing.
6:24 am
a little slowing for westbound 92 just past the toll plaza, san mateo bridge. dumbarton bridge is clear, but you see the traffic building and feeding over to the peninsula. that traffic flow is smooth, you see the brake lights just starting to tap because there's more congestion. and of course the bay bridge toll plaza is full. back to you. >> thank you, mike. after that last little conversation, kari and i made some personnel changes. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. you joined a gym on january 1st, with the best of intentions. but now it's time to call it quits. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll show you how to cancel

(vo) do you fargo? you can, with wells fargo. it's only january 31st, but maybe you're having second thoughts about the gym membership you signed up for. >> consumer investigator chris chmura is here to show us savvy way to say cancel your gym membership and now 4 bucks might protect you. those new year's resolutions to join a gym, lose weight and get fit fade fast. >> by march, something like 67% of gym memberships are already going unused. >> julie at deal news says gyms make it easy to join, in person, online, in their app. so what's it like canceling? >> be prepared to have to repeat yourself a lot. because odds are, they're going to throw every tactic at you to try to get you to stay on.
6:28 am
>> stand your ground. >> be really polite but really firm. >> when your firm politeness wins, make sure you get proof of your cancellation in writing. side note, there should be no fee if you just signed up. >> in california, you have five days. there's a five-day cooling off period where you can quit and don't have any cost consequences. >> canceling a gym membership by mail is your best defense. >> send it via certified mail. it seems very old-fashioned, but that way you have a record of trying to quit. >> that 4 bucks for certified mail should protect you. in the case of the gym continuing to bill you dues and claiming that it had no idea you wanted to cancel. well, if you used certified mail, you can counter that claim and get that debt wiped clear. we also have more ahead at 6:30, including a microclimate weather alert. ahead of this latest storm's arrival, meteorologist kari hall is

you may know adam schiff's work to protect the rule of law, or to build affordable housing, or write california's patients bill of rights. but i know adam through the big brother program. we've been brothers since i was seven. he stood by my side as i graduated from yale,
6:31 am
and i stood by his side when he married eve, the love of his life. i'm a little biased, but take it from adam's little brother. he'll make us all proud as california senator. i'm adam schiff and i approve this message. right now at 6:30, we are tracking this incoming storm. our stormranger providing you with the bay area's most accurate forecast, from heavy rain to strong winds, and high surf. we are moving you forward with an updated timeline and the closures already in effect. just in, an arrest made in the case of a peninsula church targeted by gunfire. the alarming new video from the
6:32 am
moment it happened. plus, we are bracing for a new round of toll hikes. we will get you ready for the plan to charge you even more to drive across the golden gate bridge. this is "today in the bay." thanks for joining us on this wednesday morning. it's kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we are under a microclimate weather alert this morning. we have team coverage, ginger is live in the north bay. she has more on the storm related closures already in effect. >> first, meteorologist kari hall. we've been talking about this timeline and some folks might look out their window and say, it's not raining yet. >> yet is the key word. for the north bay, it is already raining. we're starting out with lighter showers. the storm system will continue to make its way across the bay area today. let's get a closer look with our stormranger, mobile doppler radar. we can see some light showers farther to the north from lake to mendocino counties.
6:33 am
we've seen it off and on for sonoma county. this is far to the north of us as we are getting some of this light activity just to start out the day. as we go hour-by-hour, we'll continue to see the radar filling in. it won't be until the afternoon until we'll see that rain down the peninsula, and it's starting to make its way into the east bay. the really heavy stuff will be later on this evening, and we'll continue to track this and talk more about the impacts that's coming up in a few minutes. you've been telling us all morning, we've been talking about some of those areas that may be at risk of flooding. this is ahead of the storm's arrival. there is a lot of sandbagging going on in some of those neighborhoods. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in the north bay. you're at one location where the sandbags are still ready and available this morning. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, kris and marcus. sandbags are right over there ready for anybody who needs it. the sand is right behind us. go ahead and fill those bags and prepare for that incoming rain
6:34 am
and the wind that kari has been talking about, locations like this across the north bay. we were at one in mill valley earlier, now we're over here in tiburon. there are also other ways that the cities are preparing for the incoming storm, including an emergency warming center that will open over in san rafael later today. that will happen at 5:00 and stay open until 6:30 tomorrow morning. another place where people may be able to go to get away from this storm is an overnight drop-in warming center in the city of santa rosa. they're putting it together with the catholic charities. it will be open later at 7:00 tonight. that is located on 6th street. now, residents in the north bay are preparing for the incoming storm. napa residents are no stranger to flooding that can come from creeks and streams, or the nearby napa river. now, the city can deploy floodgates if necessary, if if
6:35 am
napa river begins to overflow. >> we were just playing some soccer before the rain because this is going to be completely flooded. >> reporter: well, in anticipation of the incoming rains and wind, muri woods will be closed today. it is expected to open on a delayed schedule tomorrow. people are also keeping a close eye on the russian river at guerneville. the water levels there by thursday morning are expected to reach over 28 feet. now, flood levels are at 32 feet, so it's still shy of that. but of course a close eye is being kept on what can happen there. now, we are also expecting to hear from the governor's office in a briefing later this morning that is expected to take place at 11:00. he's expected to talk about how the state, along with multiple agencies, are preparing to respond to the stormy weather. we'll be keeping a close eye on that. but if you still need to get
6:36 am
your sandbags, you still have time to do so, because the wind is starting to pick up where we are. no rain yet, but the wind is a nice reminder that the storm is coming. >> we can hear it. thank you, ginger. here is a live look this morning in pacifica. later today high surf advisory will be in effect. that's going to start at 3:00 this afternoon. some of those waves are expected to reach more than 25 feet. as we always tell you here, don't forget, you should never turn your back to the ocean. people in the santa cruz mountains are also preparing for a new round of rain because that saturated ground toppled trees with high winds last week. last monday a tree fell on this cabin crushing parts of the home. crews did start the cleanup process and started to remove parts of the tree but she came back to gather more belongings because she doesn't know what happens with the next round of rain. >> i'm gradually every day picking up little things that i
6:37 am
can save, because i don't know what the future is going to be. >> san mateo county also encouraging people to prepare, after a large oakland tree toppled and smashed several cars last week. our free nbc bay area app is a great resource to have during the storm. you can even use it when the power goes out. it gives you exclusive access to the mobile doppler radar. type in your zip code and you'll get alerts. relief this morning with word of an arrest after a gunman fired multiple rounds at a peninsula church. surveillance video video captured the gunfire. listen. [ gunfire ] >> you hear several shots there. this happened in south san francisco yesterday afternoon. it caused extensive damage to the windows at the church.
6:38 am
thankfully, no one was injured. now, westborough middle school sits a short distance away from that church. one of those students telling us the gunfire sent a wave of fear through the campus. >> everyone was frightened and scared. a few people were actually serious and started running immediately straight up to the mur. it feels heartbreaking, frustrating, just to hear those sounds, because it's really scary. >> now, a short time ago we did get an update from police on the person they arrested. they say that suspect, a 22-year-old san francisco man, he's expected to face charges up to and perhaps including attempted murder. 6:38 now. taking a live look at the golden gate bridge, we are expecting rain there. but we are talking now about more costs to cross it. there's word of a new toll hike plan. the golden gate transportation district starting talks to gradually ramp up tools over the
6:39 am
next five years, which would eventually surpass $10. right now you likely know it's $8.75 for one axle cars using fas trak. the agency is facing a deficit and leaders will be holding flick forums to get feedback. two are online, one is in person. here is a live look for you this morning at i-80 at kingvale where the winter storm warning is in effect. we are set to get rain, the sierra will see snow, and if you're driving to or from tahoe, be careful out there. right now chain controls are not expected to take effect, but delays later today are expected. >> kari, you should be wearing running shoes, because i know you are super busy. >> we will be later on today. right now it's just some light rain starting out in parts of the north bay, but we've been tracking how this will impact the sierra. and we, once again, have the winter storm warning that will
6:40 am
be in effect later this morning into friday, as we're expecting low visibility, some heavy snow, as well as gusty winds that could down some trees and cause issues with power. you do want to avoid traveling once that snow begins falling. a look at what we can expect between now and tomorrow morning, about 5 to possibly up to 14 inches of snow in kingvale and in kirkwood. there will be more snow the end of the week into the weekend, as we are also going to go through the next week with several storms coming in. in total, we could see at least a couple feet of snow for some of those elevations above 6,000 feet. but as you go up, it could be 48 to 54 inches of snow. and that's over the course of the next seven days. so we are going to have some significant snowfall totals here as these atmospheric rivers that come in are a lot colder than we've seen previously, and we know that the sierra snowpack is only about half of its normal amount. this should hopefully help out over the next several days. mike, you're concerned about
6:41 am

6:46 am
here is some of the accusation read by marjorie taylor greene. >> secretary mayorkas' actions and decisions clearly meet the standard necessary for initiating impeachment proceedings. this historical evidence is overwhelming that the founding fathers intended impeachment to be used to deal with the commission of indictable crimes and the abuse of power. >> now, the next step is for the full house to vote, where republicans are going to need, really, every single member of their party to vote yes for the impeachment to take hold. it's not clear they have the votes. meantime, that same committee says it will not move forward on a proposal from the senate to strengthen security at the border. here is the democratic leader of the senate voicing his frustration. >> look, it's entirely unsurprising and truly disappointing at the same time that many on the hard right, including donald trump, are now trying to thwart this bipartisan
