joins us this morning. kari, super busy yesterday. looks like the radar is still picking up the rain. >> it's still picking up on some rain, and that will be the case throughout the day even though the heaviest rain has already fallen. we are tracking a system that will give us a chance of thunderstorms today. look at the lightning popping off the coast to the north, and we will look at that possibility mainly into the afternoon. right now still lingering rain in snowfall moving over towards the east bay with breaks in the activity in the north bay as well as the south bay. looks like by late morning most of us will at least get peeks of sunshine. as we move our timeline forward into the early afternoon, rain returns to the north bay and then also sweeping through much of the rest of the bay area by 3:00 to 4:00 with that chance of thunderstorms. we are watching out for all of that and the impacts. let's head over to today in the bay's bob redell live in fremont

at alameda creek. >> reporter: yeah, the alameda creek behind me and is expected to crest around 7 feet, and that's below the flood stage of 9 feet. if it did hit that, it would flood over the street but that's not expected to happen, which is a good thing. this is new video into our news room. this is along the russian river, again in hopland in mendocino valley. there are no reports of damage. in guerneville, meanwhile, water levels are not expected to peak

for another 18 or so hours. it should still be about seven feet, below flood stage. that's good news. and i just checked with the national weather service, and the waterway expected to crest several feet below flood stage. >> rain is coming in. we don't want to wiped up like secondhand land in 2005 and some of the other businesses from my childhood and stuff. >> when i was a child, it caused damage to homes and businesses. there's siren and alerts and other things to make sure everybody knows what is happening. aside from that mother nature will do its thing. >> reporter: in the south bay, homeless advocates passed out food and weather supplies to

those living along the coyote creek. for more on what these roads are going to be looking like, we are getting rain here now, and i will send it over to my buddy, mike inouye. >> thank you for being out there, buddy. i know it's tough. we are looking at conditions off the bay bridge toll plaza. water on the lens, and we are still getting active rain. we had incidents, smaller crashes, taking longer to clear like the one on the san francisco side of the bay bridge. there was a huge backup here. we had the hov lane stopped up. they recovered over the last few minutes. good movement at the toll plaza now, and that's good movement for this time of day. across the san mateo bridge, we are looking at murky conditions so watch out for the slippery conditions, especially coming off the freeway speeds. back to you. >> thank you. two north bay school districts are closed as a

precaution. both districts are in sonoma county. the first one is all schools in the kashia school district, and the school is closed today and tomorrow as well. and then the second school is sunridge school in the twin hills union school district. they are expected to be open tomorrow. both cited power outages because of the storm. the oakland zoo is going to be closed today because of the storm, and if you had reservations, take a look at that. tphaop at 6:00, authorities are identifying the pilot that died in a frightening small plane crash this week in concord. "mercury news" reporting the man

from berkeley died on tuesday, and that's when his experimental plane nosedived into the intersection of concord avenue and diamond boulevard. his plane had just taken off, and ntsb is now investigating. now to a live look at the state capitol. this is where lawmakers is taking another step towards what would be a historic move to reparations for african americans. the legislative black caucus introducing 14 reparation bills in response to proposals first outlined last summer by a task force. the measures are categorized under education, civil rights, criminal justice reform, health and business. cash payments not mentioned in the bills, but some experts believe the measures could face issues over the constitutional

legality. it's dark but you can see the waves up against the shoreline, and the high surf advisory, 25 feet high even, and make sure you have your dogs on a leash and make sure you have your kids close as well. kari, we always hear don't turn your back because the sneaker waves come out of nowhere. >> you get the turbulent waters when the storms come in and they push the swells up higher than what we typically see. most of the waves are 14 to 16 feet, which is still pretty high and dangerous, but may build just a little higher as we go into late morning and the afternoon as we are dealing with the storm moving onshore. also looking at the potential of localized flooding in some of the low-lying areas, and the sneaker waves we talk about, looks like a normal wave but by

the time it crests up on the beach, we are seeing it come higher and further inland than the previous waves. it's probably not the best beach day anyway because of the rains we will see. as we look at our storm ranger mobile doppler radar, some of the rain still lingering and will be on and off throughout the next couple of hours, and a bit of a break before it ramps up again later today. mike has a look at lower gas prices around the bay area. >> vallejo is back in the state's best ten list. you see other prices that crept up. 3.65 at the 76 on tennessee street. and in santa clara, it's platinum gas in the south bay, 3.77 on washington street, and then the best in fremont, that's 3.99. the cash price there is the best you can find.

texas, at least elon musk does, after a judge in delaware ruled he was badly overpaid. the weather has been a challenge for everybody, lately. kari would be interested in this. i came across a report from air china that was going from taipei to los angeles, and came in more than an hour early because it hit a speed record of 826 miles per hour. faster technically than a speed of sound, a lot, actually, and all that matters to a pilot is airspeed, and the plane was at normal speed through the air, but they had tremendous ground speed. the fastest in commercial flight ever, in fact. and then social media executives took a scorching yesterday. it was meta's mark zuckerberg

thanful for their dog. this is after their house caught on fire. >> this is wild. dakota is deaf, but he was able to see and smell the flames and alert the family of five of the situation while they were sleeping and helping to get everybody out safely. his mom is grateful. >> my kids, we were all crying and we were thankful that it was him that woke us up and got us out. >> you should have a hero badge put around your neck, huh? >> two volunteer firefighters live in the home that burned down, and no word on what sparked the fire. let me tell you what cole would have done? can you come and pick me up off the couch and take me out from the fire. it's so hard to get them to go out and go potty with the rain. >> we will have a few more

breaks, but it's going to be wet on the grass, so i don't know how cole will feel about that. we have a new update from the drought monitor. i want to show you what it looked like just last week. we saw a few spots were abnormally dry further to the north and right there further to the south. but i wanted to show you the update we just got with now more of the sierra included in abnormally dry conditions. the good thing is that it's not much of a concern right now because it's early february, and we have a very active storm pattern setting up, so as we see the wide view, this storm system moving through now and there's more back behind that. the next storm will be coming in on sunday. what i'm watching for on the satellite radar is the lightning strikes popping up further to the north, and as the energy moves its way down towards the bay area, we will have a chance as well as seeing some of the isolated thunderstorms going into the afternoon.

we do still have rain this morning, but a lot of the heavier widespread rain has always moved through and is now pushed further to the south. we will have a few more breaks today, but the ground is already saturated. with the next wave of rain coming in for this afternoon, that's when we have the chance of seeing thunderstorms and also some gusty winds. the rain just lingers into tonight, into the day tomorrow. there's not a completely dry day we have here in the forecast, and even ahead of the next storm that is going to be coming in on sunday. so at any point there could be rain coming down at least for today into early tomorrow. we are looking at quarter to half inch of rainfall depending on somewhere of the heavier downpours move through. the next storm arriving on sunday is another atmospheric river, and we may see more of an impact here because of the more heavy rain, and we are seeing

that coming in on the heels of the heavy rain we are seeing now. we are starting to see the accumulating affects of all of the rainfall as we get storm after storm. in the sierra, we are going to see 5 to 15 inches of snow between today and tomorrow. if you are heading that direction, know there are chain controls in effect for today and tomorrow morning. they could see 34 to 60 inches of snow in the sierra in the total week. we can see there's an active storm pattern that we have here. we will watch that even as the temperatures continue to drop. mike, you are seeing the commute building out of richmond. >> yeah, more cars and still water on the road. as kari says, it's clearing but there's wet roads. this is out of richmond and out

the view of the storms that we are seeing, the rain that now some of the heavier rain pushed further to the south. it's giving us a little more break in the north bay, and then over towards san francisco and down the peninsula, and we are seeing it also return for morgan hill. i am watching all that for you. we will talk about the weekend. mike, you have updates and an alert for dublin. >> yeah, we are seeing the activity here, and eastbound 580, a crash involving a big rig shifted to just the fast lane. only one lane blocked but that's a distraction, and it's counter to what your commute would be, and that's slow there. in the peninsula, as we zoom up towards san francisco, kari also showed activity up here.

look at the blue, puddling and ponding there west of daly city. we are looking at crashes towards that area, and smaller reports of flooding sticking out into the lanes. >> thank you, mike. this is video of the flooding that happened along the russian river. this is in hopland about 50 miles north of guerneville. the waters there reached minor flood stage. water levels are not expected to peak for another eight hours or so and that should be below flood stage. >> the ground is pretty much saturated everywhere. >> and ginger conejero saab is in daly city this morning. ginner, residents had a big scare there overnight? >> reporter: that's right, kris and marcus, and we will show you the reason for the big scare.

first, i want to show how wet and muddy the ground is around us, and that will give you an idea how saturated the ground soil is just feet away from that big tree that came down on that two-story building there. the area where the tree fell is still blocked off and appears to be blocking a driveway into that apartment complex. this happened, from what we understand, last night, just about 10:30, right after much of the heavy rain coming down in san francisco and this part of the peninsula. the good news, the apartment's maintenance team says there were no injuries. can you see there's damage to the exterior of that building. heavy downpours in san francisco happened around 7:00 last night. cars taking it slow on the freeway. this is a look at 101 where there was massive ponding along

the highway. still the rains didn't seem to slow down all businesses, and people still got out to enjoy restaurants like the pink onion in the mission. >> the barriers can come back, if anything, and if it gets too crazy we try not to leave anything on the floor just in case, you know, so it's a little scary sometimes with these rains. so far so good. >> reporter: speaking of damage, we are only seeing the exterior damage to the tree falling there. no clear idea how extensive the damage could be inside. we are told that that tree will be cleared up at some point this morning, although the details on that we have yet to get an exact timeline. we will keep an eye out on how the rest of the story develops and send you the very latest.

there in the rubble. today arraignments are set to begin for the pro palestinian protesters that shutdown the bridge last november during the middle of the apec conference, bringing the traffic there to a standstill for hours. 78 of the protesters face 5 misdemeanor charges each which could amount to jail time. ahead of today's first hearing they plan to hold a rally this morning outside of san francisco's hall of justice. contra costa leaders will meet later this morning as the ongoing review of the coke dust release. at the time it happened, the department said there was no risk to the residents, and many woke up to see ash covering cars and homes. county supervisors have been look into the lag time between the release and the notification by the refining company. san josé's mayor plans to get together with other top leaders in the bay area this

morning. mayor matt mahan and lisa gilmore and larry klein expected to have a panel discussion to focus on dwindling jobs in the tech industry and the shifting need for office space, and the event is sold out. it's at the san josé marriott, and if we get any information out of this, we will report it to you. i-80 right there, and snow is piling up on the roads. you can see the tire tracks from the folks heading through that area, and this is through soda springs. we are expecting more snow up in that area today. check out this from last night. if you look closely there, look to the left of the screen and

you can see a few people on the slopes that came out last night, and, of course, having a good time. >> they are. i would have been asleep. meteorologist, kari hall, is here with our weekend forecast. we still want to get out and have fun over the weekend -- or maybe stay in? what do we do? >> well, depends on what you want to do, because if you are going to tahoe it will be hard to get there. i wanted to show you a look at the palisades resort where it's now freezing, and that rain changed over to snow there. it has been snowing pretty much the whole time for the upper elevations as the storm comes in. it will be off and on going into the weekend with only a few breaks as we take a look at our forecast for south lake tahoe. rain and snow in the forecast tomorrow. we will see a bit of a break on saturday. sunday is going to be snowing once again. for the weekend we are looking at about 5 to 15 inches of snow. it will be beautiful if you can get there and want to see the snow falling, but if you are

staying around the bay area, there's a lot going on, including the lunar new year and black history month celebration, and if you are going to the pebble beach pro am, we will see waves of rain coming in and temperatures in the mid-50s there, so bundle up. we are looking at the bay bridge itself and traffic up the incline, and it looks great and the backup at the bay bridge is moving and it's filled in the toll plaza and back over the berkeley curve. all of this stuff, the fog and drizzle going on, so use caution. things are kind of lightening up. we have a smooth flow down this freeway, and it's slow over lafayette. over here in the north bay, we have scheduled construction. probably won't go on because of all the water on the roadways.

around the bay. i am concerned about this, a lot of slowing coming out of hayward and castro valley and towards dublin. only one lane is blocked and we hope to have an update, and the department of transportation is on scene there. and ukraine's defense ministry claiming they destroyed a russian ship in the black sea. the corvette ship eventually sank, and russia so far not commenting, and this would be the second such russian ship to sink in the last month. the number of casualties not yet known. democrats have agreed to a huge change in border security in exchange. >> it may be the best deal republicans will get on the border in decades.

the last immigration law was when i was in high school. the senate would give the president the power to shut the border down if the number people crossing averages 5,000 a day, and so far no deal from house republicans, because donald trump says they shouldn't vote yes. >> don't make a bad border deal because a bad border deal would be worse than no deal at all. you don't need a deal to tighten up the border and make it secure. i had the most secure border in history and i didn't have a bill or deal. >> trump made those remarks after meeting with teamsters trying to get their endorsement. president biden meets with the united auto workers today. the democratic president is asking for the power to shut the border. here's the democratic leader in the senate, chuck schumer. >> look, the border deal is a very important thing to get

spent millions on legal fees. fani willis was just subpoenaed over allegations. willis says they will speak about their relationship under oath on february 15th. a few minutes ago the pentagon alerted us that secretary of defense, lloyd austin, will brief the press about something at 7:30 california time. we don't know what it is, but we know the u.s. had been planning strikes on the retribution of the three service members killed, and i don't know that's what it is, but it could be likely. and then new findings crediting hungry sea otters, and they have a never-ending appetite for shore crab. they dig up pickle weed roots.

prefer that super bowl gear over the team's. >> but you can't go wrong with red. >> but they are different, a little different. >> yeah. >> we are not in red today because we are not in the microclimate alert, but flooding is still a concern. >> it's a concern, and eventually we will see the creeks and rivers and everything starting to go back down. we had such heavy rain yesterday evening that we are still seeing the impact. i want to show you how much rain we had with the storm system and all of this fell in a short amount of time. we had over an inch of rainfall in vallejo and concord about an inch of a rain. and then fremont had about three quarters of an inch, and close to an inch in san josé. we may make that in the next couple of hours. as we take a look at some of our highest rainfall totals for some of our mountains, and venado is

at the top of the list. the marin civic center, nearly four inches of rainfall there. the santa cruz mountains, 3.74 inches of rain. we are starting to see some thunderstorms pop off of the coastline. we are going to be watching out for that possibility. this one, once again, moving into the coastal areas right there south of half moon bay. that's going to be moving over the santa cruz mountains with heavier rain moving in. we also have seen the waves of rain in contra costa county and alameda county, and heavy rain through hayward and over towards castro valley. looking at the heavy rain from san mateo to redwood city, and the thunderstorms where we could be hearing the rumble of thunder here soon, that chance could continue over the next few hours. there's a higher chance this afternoon with a wave of rain

between 2:00 and 4:30, before we get more of a break. today, tomorrow, friday and into saturday there will be a chance of quick passing showers. we could see another quarter to half inch of rain for today. then there's another storm coming our way for sunday. this atmospheric river will reach into the bay area on sunday morning and continue into the middle of next week. it will be a slow mover, so we will see more of the flooding possibilities as well as gusty winds and also looking at some very chilly temperatures. look at the highs in the low to mid-50s over the next few days. san francisco will be in the mid-50s as well. mike, you are looking at slowing in san josé. >> yeah, over here we see the traffic stacking up. there's a significant amount of traffic building there, and it's enough for a break in the traffic. it's not wet roadway, but damp.

welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at our top stories here on "today in the bay," including overnight flooding along the russian river north of the bay area. this is video from overnight, and this is from hopeland 50 miles north of guerneville. the waters there have reached minor flood stage, and this is east of 101, it's closed. as for guerneville, the waters there not expected to peak for another seven or eight hours, and should be below flood stage. and now that the sun has come up, we can see alameda creek more clearly.

it did rise and is expected to crest at 7 1/2 feet, which is lower than flood stage. it's the same area that saw heavy flooding last winter, and that's why we wanted to get there. despite the recent wet weather, levels so far not too bad, and flood stage is nine feet, so two feet below is where we will crest today. in daly city a big tree came crashing down on an apartment complex, and it happened before 11:00 last night along king drive. that area is still blocked off this morning, and that tree appears to be blocking a driveway. the apartment's maintenance team told us nobody was injured when the tree fell. now a live look to pacifica. the sun is starting to come up so we are getting more light. a high surf advisory remains in effect until 3:00 this afternoon. some of the waves there at 25 feet high. stay out of the water, kari. >> yeah, and we are seeing a
