savannah is enjoying the moment off. >> punxsutawney phil is ready. there is a live look there at punxsutawney, pennsylvania. it is always an all-night party. mr. roker, by the way, predicting that once again that groundhog will see its shadow. >> okay, we'll check it out. speaking of weather, we're tracking heavy rain and flooding along the west coast. it comes as another stronger system is on the move. that system is set to come back next weekend and early next week. al is tracking all of that. let us start with breaking news out of florida. several people killed when a small plane crashed into a mobile home park. marissa, good morning. what is the latest there? >> reporter: hoda, good morning. you can still smell the smoke in

the air here. there were three fatalities. three inside the plane, one inside the mobile home that took a direct hit. this was inside a populated area. this was supposed to be a typical weekday night, and of course, we saw it turn deadly. this morning, tragedy in clearwater, florida after a single engine plane crashed into a mobile home park thursday evening. >> i'm losing engine. >> they went down hard. >> reporter: the fiery crash happened around 7:00 p.m. last night. >> i can confirm we have several fatalities both within the aircraft and mobile home. >> reporter: the small plane striking one home directly. the blaze causing fire damage to at least three other peoples nearby. this helicopter video shows the field of debris with firefighters working overnight to put out of the any hot spots. >> we haven't been able to get into the scene to effectively assess the totality of it at this point.

>> reporter: the pilot of the plane, a beechcraft bonanza v35 reported engine failure shortly before the crash. the faa added it is not yet known how many people were onboard. >> we heard what we thought was like a motorcycle go by or something. then a few seconds later, it was a loud bang. the windows actually shook. the house shook. >> reporter: he was at the scene minutes after the crash taking this video of the blaze. >> even after the fire was, like, out, you couldn't tell. everybody knows everybody. everybody is friends. and, i mean, it is just weird that something like this happens, you know, in your neighborhood. >> reporter: investigators on the ground working around the clock to get to victims and determine what went wrong. the fatalities include who was on the ground. everyone is working to find the identities of the people who

lost their lives and crews are working to make sure this remains safe for those who live here after this tragedy. back to you. >> all right. marissa, thank you. now to that unrelenting rain out west. some neighborhoods in california saw another 5 inches in less than 24 hours. that's on top of a storm that devastated the region just days ago. and now more rain is on the way. al is standing by for that all-important forecast in just a moment. but, first, nbc's dana griffin is on the ground in san diego with more. >> reporter: craig, good morning. there is a high surf warning in effect until saturday morning. that's because these waves are forecasted to be as high as 10 feet. it is windy and with saturated ground and more rain coming this weekend, it could make the clean-up here in san diego more difficult. overnight, the brunt of thursday's storm swamping southern california, soaking rain dropping on battered san

diego, still reeling from last week's destructive floods. 65 people in evacuation shelters across the city. 30 roads closed. >> the county of san diego is establishing a housing assistance program to connect displaced residents are long-term housing while they wait to go back into their cars. >> reporter: this along with widespread damage throughout los angeles. and swift water rescues across the region. teens pulling a person from a storm channel in orange county. in santa ana, hoisting a man from the middle of a river bed. drivers rescued from submerged cars as roadways suddenly turn into waterways. >> i couldn't open the door. she pulled me out of the window. thank god they're here. >> reporter: walkways closed after the earth underneath washed away.

>> this is not a little flood, no. you see it. no, look at the cars. it's coming into your house. >> reporter: and homes water logged. >> it looks like a solid 30 inches of standing water. even more so over here. that's a good five inches. >> reporter: impacts of the pineapple express sending tropical moisture from hawaii to the west coast. in the north, the sierra blanketed with snow, up to four feet in some locations. the russian river overflowing, flooding vineyards. trees and power lines down across the state. that latest storm may be over, but come sunday, a second more powerful storm will impact once again. officials are warning people to get out now, get the supplies you need so you can avoid being on the road. and a reminder, if you see standing water, do not drive through it. it could be deadly. craig? >> good tips there. dana griffin for us there in san diego. thank you. let's head to al. the west coast really getting pounded. >> it is not over yet. here is the first storm bringing

some rain and snow in the upper elevations that's today through sunday, making its way east. but this is the next storm while this atmospheric river that will develop with this system isn't maybe as strong as the one that's moving through now, that will bring in heavy snow, winds and rain to the rockies. what this thing is going to do is bring in a storm system that's going to kind of sit and just waves of rain with this pineapple express bringing heavy, heavy rain over the entire day, over already saturated ground as you just saw dana's report. the big problem now, a moderate risk of flooding south of monterrey all the way down to oxnard dangerous flash flooding upwards of a foot of rain. 12 inches of rain. also up as you get up into the sierra and over four feet of snow in some of those mountain peaks. so this is a very powerful storm.

hospital. it happened on temple drive in pacheco. firefighters have now cleared that scene. we know the fire started a little before midnight. flames quickly engulfed the home. still no word on the victims' injuries or how they're doing. firefighters do say two other people inside the home made it out safely. also breaking this morning, an earthquake off the coast of humboldt county. the usgs calling it a 4.9 quake. it struck about 20 minutes ago in the pacific ocean west of ferndale. there are no reports of any damage at this time. let's get a look at that forecast with meteorologist kari hall. >> we're starting out with some rain across the bay area, off and on showers moving through, giving us a soggy commute. and we are seeing it now in san francisco and then another wave of rain moving from the south bay all the way up to the tri-valley. and this is the kind of activity we'll see at least for the next couple of hours. there may be some more breaks for the afternoon, but still at any point today we may need to break out the umbrellas and deal

with some brief heavy downpours, but we may also get some more sunshine today, which will mean we could see some rainbows. and then going into the day taupe, much more rain coming in. the later we get in the day, the higher the rain chances as the next atmospheric river arrives later saturday night into sunday morning. so a lot of wet weather in our forecast with a potential of flooding and some high winds. the biggest threat we'll see will be coming in on sunday. so we'll keep you up to date on all of the changes in our forecast, and you can get any information you need on our website, nbcbayarea.com.

maggie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, guys good morning as you said, a stunning and emotional day of testimony yesterday. jennifer crumbley crying multiple times at one point crumbley's own attorney shedding a tear america's first parent to ever stand trial for their child's massive school shooting pleads a case in front of a jury that she couldn't have stopped her son. >> i wish she would have killed us instead. >> reporter: this morning the mother speaking out in her own defense. >> as a parent, you spend your whole life trying to protect your child from other dangers. you never -- you never would think you have to protect your child from harming somebody else. >> reporter: in emotional testimony, jennifer fighting claims that she dismissed clear warning signs of her son that left four students dead. crumbley describing ethan as quiet with few friends, but

never thinking he was a danger to others. >> did you ever believe that your son needed mental health treatment, therapy and counseling, anything >> no. separately. prosecutors say t i felt like i had an open door he could come to me about anything. >> both are charged with involuntary manslaughter he will be tried separately. prosecutors say together they bought ethan the gun used in the shooting, playing this video of jennifer taking her son to a shooting range but crumbley says her husband was in charge for storing the gun. >> i just didn't feel comfortable being in charge of that. >> reporter: claiming ethan's school down played concerns that he was a risk. the morning of the shooting administrators called a meeting with ethan and his parents to discuss a disturbing drawing he

had made of a gun with the phrases "blood everywhere" and "the thoughts won't stop help me. testifying monday why he supported keeping ethan at school. >> i felt it was better for him to be around peers and people who are his age than to be home alone. >> reporter: crumbley, who earlier cried alongside her attorney when prosecutors played video, now testifying. >> we did lose a lot >> you have lost everything. >> we did. >> maggie, we also saw the defense pushing to have her son ethan take the stand where does that stand? >> reporter: right this is a really interesting dynamic that's been going back and forth for a while. the defense drilled down again yesterday on their desire to have ethan testify, potentially challenge the narrative that he repeatedly asked his mom for help leading up to the shooting. but the problem is for the

>> nbc's senior investigative correspondent vicky nguyen joins us with this one. >> this is a growing the end that actually reached an all-time high last year. scammers promising good money and work-from-home gigs. even experienced job seekers are being targeted here's what you need to know before you apply to that next job. a new warning on what you might be finding online. hyper realistic job hoaxes, making it tough to tell what's real. >> i just spent $5,000 for a new job. that was a fake website. we just pulled a common remote job scam on you. >> scammers will post or reach out about a job that doesn't exist. they're actually after your personal info like bank accounts, your social security number or credit card details. they use that to drain your accounts. >> i lost $1,500 to a job scam. >> often they find targets through social media, people who say they have been laid off.

what is it about someone that has been recently laid off that makes them especially vulnerable? >> we know the job market is tight right now and a lot of people do want to keep that wo flexible. >> reporter: research companies and positions thoroughly. >> look at their job board. is that really a job? take it a step further. reach out to their hr department and say, is this person working for you? is this real? >> the federal trade commission says it fielded 61,000 complaints over the first nine months of last year, costing victims a total of $186 million. >> they were actually asking me for my bank account, for my social security number. >> he was contacted by scammers last year who were impersonating recruiters from a real company. after just one interview via text over wire, no video, no conversation even, he says they offered him a high-paying job

via e-mail. is that when your spidey sense said, this doesn't seem right. >> i think the spidey sense came as i was talking with some friends of mine, but still i didn't see this coming. >> the ftc says examples include work-from-home opportunities that sell you on being your own boss, nanny and care giving jobs that don't require an interview and any job position that makes you pay to get hired. >> 85% of people in the u.s. are looking for a new job, so this means it will be more competitive. >> to find legitimate jobs, tap in first. update your resume with in-demand skills, and be wary of anyone who offers you a job after just one conversation. >> that's just not how companies do business. they have lots of processes to make sure that this is going to be, you know, a good fit for both people. >> i mean, so if this has

happened to you, if you have already been scammed, what can you do? what should you do? >> always contact your bank, your credit card to try to get that payment reversed. but be aware of those checks. never cash those checks. or they say, oh, we're going to pay you, but it will be a higher amount. you need to refund us the difference. that check will always bounce. by the time you give them that hard-earned money, you go back and the check was never real in the first place. report fraud to help other people because that's how the government and law enforcement can keep track of fraudulent scams and warn people. >> scammers are the worst. >> the pits. boo! good morning. so this current storm that's affecting the west, this will start heading east today. here is what we're looking at. heavy snow and winds snarling the rockies. we have a risk across the southern plains of strong storms developing. now tomorrow as that system moves east, you will be high rain fall rates into the mississippi river valley and

severely burned, was airlifted to uc davis. another female was ground transported to john muir. two other occupants were not injured and they are said to be safe thanks to working fire alarms. let's get a look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. >> we're starting out with rain. we've seen it off and on and we can see the water on the camera lens as we take a look at san francisco, and the satellite radar showing more activity moving in and waves of rain possible at any point today. we're seeing the bulk of it moving through this morning, pushing through the south county, with more showers up the peninsula into san francisco. there looks to be a break between late morning into the afternoon, but really at any point we could see some quick-moving rain passing by and a slight chance of thunderstorms, even into the day on saturday. there's not a completely dry hour of the day for the entire bay area, but we could see the rain chances increasing late tomorrow night and into sunday as the next atmospheric river moves in. we'll keep you up to date on

that. we will do our very own version of the puppy bowl right here in studio 1a. >> that's a big hit. >> all right. let's get to our news at 8:00. guys, let's begin with the deadly plane crash overnight in clearwater, florida. we've got a live look at the scene right now. a small plane slammed right into a mobile home park. there were casualties on the plane, casualties on the ground. marissa has the latest for us. >> reporter: good morning. >> hoda, good morning. you can still smell the smoke in the air of this neighborhood. this is a popular area. we're only a few miles away from the nearby airport, and pretty close to the mall. we just learned three people have died including a pilot, two people on the ground, and now we're also hearing those distressing moments, those calls for help from the pilot on the

plane in those final moments. >> i'm losing engine. >> they went down hard. >> reporter: you can see aerial video from above showing a gaping hole where a mobile home once was. these are the charred remains left behind after a single engine plane crashed into it. this was around 7:00 p.m. last night. you can also see from that video it set fire to some of the homes nearby. neighbors around there reported feeling their houses shake. they reported hearing loud popping sounds and explosions. emergency crews, of course, worked hard to rescue people who were trapped by the flames inside of their homes. they were searching for survivors, and of course, working to put out any hot spots, making sure that the rest of the people living in this neighborhood remained safe throughout the night, and of course, we are working to learn the identities of those three people who lost their lives last night, and so begins the interagency investigation between the faa and the ntsb into what exactly went wrong here. hoda.

>> marissa parra, thank you. to the west coast now where the weather system known as the pineapple express has dumped massive amounts of rain and caused serious flooding there. roads were closed. emergency evacuations, shelters opened in san diego. that area still recovering from last week's damaging floods. emergency teams also had to make some water rescues across southern california as well. meanwhile, in the mountains to the north, some areas got as much as 4 feet of snow. mr. roker, could there be more of that on the way? >> unfortunately, there is, craig. good morning to all of you. this is the first storm that's pounding right now. this is storm number one friday into sunday. we've got that second storm now out over the pacific. that's sunday through tuesday. and you can see for today this first storm is going to bring heavy rain and some mountain snows, more heavy snow into the rockies.

now here's this second storm. while not as powerful as this first one, here is the problem. the moisture emanating from hawaii, that's why we call it the pineapple express. it will reach california by evening. and on sunday, we're talking an intense band of rain that continues through the entire d another 4 feet at some of th day. this is a slow mover so it's enhanced flooding because of the saturated soil already. we have a moderate flood risk right now south of monterrey all the way down passed oxnard, california we're talking about anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of rain. and in the mountains, we could see another four feet at some of the peaks. guys >> all right, al thank you. all right. there could be good news on the way when it comes to those high drug prices. the biden administration has started to negotiate with big pharmaceutical companies the goal here is to bring down the costs of some of the most popular drugs used by people on medicare our senior business corresponden christine romans is here with the details. christine, you came into my office yesterday and you said, this is a big deal. >> it is. >> what drugs are we talking about? >> the u.s. government for the first time really being able to use its cloud as the biggest buyer of these drugs to

negotiate prices we're talking about cancer drugs, diabetes drugs, arthritis, blood thinners. look at all these names. you have probably seen these ads. these are widely advertised drugs, widely used the 10 drugs here, there is a blood cancer drug, stelara there, that's a psoriasis drug it is $25,000, i think so the government picking these drugs to sit down with drug companies and say, all right, we're your biggest buyer let's negotiate some discounts. >> let's talk about the discounts. how much money are we talking about folks being able to save on these drugs. >> anywhere from 25% to 60% depending on the drug here, right? these are lucrative drugs. but also these are drugs that the u.s. government is paying money for, like $50 billion in

medicare costs for these drugs in particular. we know that out-of-pocket $3.4 billion is what seniors spend on these drugs. the government is also paying. this is the taxpayer trying to use its clout to impact prices. >> what about people not on medicare will they see those discounts? >> often insurance companies match what medicare is getting with drug companies. drug indus fighting this. this is something that was made law by the inflation reduction act. also in that inflation reduction act, something that people are seeing right now and that is a this could lead to the prices go down the drug companies are fighting this this was made law by the inflation reduction act. also something that people are seeing right now, and that is a cap out-of-pocket for medicare part d recipients. right now there are people in this country feeling better about things that cap will lower to $2,000 out-of-pocket by the year 2025 so watch this space. the negotiations landmark, they're just beginning 2026 is when this needs to be, according to the law, these lower prices need to be intact. >> we could use some relief, that's for sure. >> thanks, christine happy friday.
