unscathed. we have a live look outside right now and things are clearing up. it is looking pretty good. let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. after yesterday just about any kind of weather would be a major improvement. >> that's right. it moved right across the area and produce some heavy wind and rain. here is what is happening in the atmosphere. it does not look like anything that they just went through. the atmospheric river is slamming them with life- threatening flash floods. we have all heard and seen reports. atlas peak, 86 miles per hour. at mount diablo, 79.

here is the other thing about the wind and why we likely saw so many trees come down. not only the strength of the wind but the wind was coming out of the south. prevailing winds are normally from the north and the west. trees usually below in a certain direction but you take that wind and you turn it the opposite way out of the south, that is why we did get a lot of trees snapping. it they are just not to bending in that direction. look at the snow totals. 2-4 inches in santa cruz, san ramon 1.85 in san jose 1.67 inches. we have a flood watch out for parts of the bay. creeks are running fast and high so be careful. on the radar, most of the heavy rain is gone and we just have a few areas across contra costa and alameda counties.

this will continue into tracy over the next few hours. in fairmont we will see activity over the next 40 minutes. in the southbay there are scattered areas of rain. we will take you through the full-time line and we will detail a major change in the weather coming up in about 18 minutes. the storm hit the northbay hard and plenty of rain was coming down in napa county but it was the wind that created problems. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez has more. >> reporter: terry, you can't drive there napa without seeing the mess that this storm left behind. this is franklin street. a massive redwood tree crushed a truck and then slammed into a house, narrowly missing a six- year-old girl who was sleeping inside.

>> it was very traumatic. >> reporter: she said it felt like an earthquake when a redwood tree came down on to her neighbors house. >> their granddaughter was asleep on the couch. so they are very lucky. >> reporter: two cars were also crushed as the tree toppled power poles and brought down power lines. >> i thought it was thunder. >> reporter: 87-year-old ron ray was shaken out of bed. a giant for tree fell on his napa county house. part of it went through his living room wall. he and his wife say the wind was ferocious. >> if you tried to walk outside it would blow you sideways. it was pretty bad. >> there was water cascading in here. >> reporter: and shannon anderson nearly lost his life.

he stopped to clear a branch from the road as he was driving home when a tree fell onto the driver side cab of his truck. his wife was in the passenger seat. >> when the weatherman tells you to stay home, stay home. >> reporter: unfortunately people that stayed home still got a scare. a tree hit this newly renovated house. >> there are trees that just fell on houses. >> they escaped her that window. napa fire had to rip this out to get through. >> reporter: julie bloomberg shows us how her neighbors escaped. >> they lost everything in 2017 in a wildfire and the rebuild but i guess they are used to climate trauma. >> reporter: we are back here live and we can see just how massive this redwood tree was.

folks are grateful that more trees did not fall down. pg&e has been out here all day and the power is still out. or than 50,000 napa county residents still do not have power. reporting live from napa i am jodi hernandez , nbc bay area news. in the southbound -- southbay the same thing. there were power outages leaving close to 400,000 pg&e customers in the dark. some people have been without power for more than 24 hours. let's go to marianne favro. >> reporter: some people had to get rid of all of the food in their fridge. this is one reason why we saw so many power outages in san jose. the winds were so strong that it took out this huge tree and others like it and ended up coming down on power poles.

snap. this is 70 foot pole was no match for the gusting winds that whip through the area and now a daunting repair job is underway as crews worked to remove a damaged power pole and replace it with a new one. >> this is a historic storm. we had wind gusts up to 89 miles per hour. the damages expensive and significant. we had two different circuits that were impacted here. >> reporter: more than 100,000 customers were without power and this afternoon more than 52,000 customers still had no electricity. some have been without power more than 24 hours. jeremy is worried about the food in his fridge. >> i will probably have to start purging today. >> reporter: sharon relies on a

medical device overnight so when she lost power and is concerned. >> i have definitely got to have it. >> reporter: she showed us the backup battery she relies on. alberto and his granddaughter bundled up to deal with no power and no heat for 13 hours. >> it was a little cold in the night. >> reporter: several businesses have been forced to close including this walgreens. the outages also meant no school for thousands of southbay students. classes were canceled at oak grove high school. fisher middle school in los gatos had to close and so did west valley college in saratoga. people across the bay are establishing backup plans as they wait for crews to complete repairs. you can see right now crews are still working to install this

new power pole and they are going to continue to work out here tonight. about 1000 people in this area on blossom hill road are without power. i talked with some of them and they say they were told by nbc bay area news three power should be restored tonight. some of them have already made plans to spend the night elsewhere. reporting live from at san jose i am marianne favro , nbc bay area. our microclimate weather continues through the new newscast starting at 5:30 pm. parts of the city hit the hardest will be featured at 5:30 pm. now, to our continuing coverage of super bowl lviii. it is the first full day that the 49ers and the chiefs have been in las vegas and all eyes will be on allegiant stadium. there is an event known as

super bowl opening night. the teams meet with the media while lucky fans look on. that used to be known as media day. the 49ers arrived at allegiant stadium ahead of the media blitz. 49ers faithful not wasting any time getting there. nbc bay area's damian trujillo is at the resorts world casino. >> reporter: the fan zone opened on wednesday but this is vegas and fans ours though finding ways to have fun even if they are not here for the big game. this might be the raiders home but this week you will find a sea of 49ers fans walking the streets and halls.

in london today buckingham palace revealed news about king charles. he has been diagnosed with cancer. last week he had an operation for enlarged prostate and they say that is how the doctors made the discovery. they say it is not prostate cancer but they have not said what kind of cancer it is. the king has started treatment already and is limiting public appearances. there is a drug test could save millions of lives lives. and all it takes is a blood sample. other than a biopsy. tonight our business and us into the lab er scott for more. >> reporter: inside of this lab they are working to detect cancer as soon as possible by

sequencing molecules from bodily fluids in a single test. >> the chance of curing cancer is higher if we detected early. >> reporter: a team is working to find cancer before a patient has signs he or she has it by taking samples of blood or urine. >> biological fluids like blood and urine can signal things from all over the body. they are ideal sources for looking for cancer even if we don't have reason to suspect it. >> reporter: it can also tell if somebody that has been fighting cancer is cancer free. since the test involves blood there are inevitable questions about the failure of theranos. the doctor says these samples are larger and able to show results.

i think the tree and the weather just did not get along. >> an estimated half 1 million people across the state and it could be days before electricity is restored. some people from the station won't have power until tomorrow. >> i just checked the totals and they are anywhere between 3- 7 inches of rain. some picked up more than half of their entire rain season in a few days. cleanup continues as the storm system is lingering on the map let me show you where that is right now. we started off with the wide view. what we are dealing with right now is two different weather features. we have the atmospheric river that slammed us yesterday moving into southern california and continuing to just pummel

them with heavy rain. then we have this upper level area of low pressure and that will linger into the forecast. i don't see anything often on rain chances. we are tracking that with heavy rain. this match here left the city and is moving towards pleasanton. rain in the south bay and the santa cruz mountains moving off to the north. another round of rain at round rock into the night. this area of low pressure moves to the south and then to the east. it will be overall a mixed bag tomorrow. we will start off with some sun and clouds and the chance of patchy fog and then maybe a spotty shower over the east bay

and livermore through the afternoon. we stay with that same trend with the best chance of showers over the santa cruz mountains and back towards hearts of the east bay as well. overall i think we will be able to get to tomorrow. and that is fine. we are not looking at gusty winds. we will begin back down here in the 40s tomorrow morning so that will be hard if you have cleanup to do. be sure to layer up and you will be good to go. 47 in san francisco and 40 in the north bay. overall, we are still on the cool side. 57 in --. for the east bay, 57 and 59 in fremont. the peninsula with 55 at half moon bay. marina and for the north bay, 58 and 58 in a

novato. in wednesday there is another chance of rain but not too much more this week. we are expected to see the weather pattern change dramatically by this week. if you have any super bowl events, that will be good. look at this. high pressure is moving in a and it will take the polar storm track and keep it off to the north. we are looking at dry weather and chance of morning fog. the southern branch of the jet stream that brought us these recent storms is going to go way off to the south over portions of mexico. right now we are locked into this dry weather saturday and sunday and it will be nice. the timing is just up for the weekend forecast.

we have a follow-up on a street vending ban. city leaders are expanding it. the city issued a 90 day ban on street vending on mission street. leaders were worried about unpermitted vendors blocking sidewalks. they say conditions improved in the first 60 days of the program so now they will extend that ban by six months.
