>> good tuesday morning to you. 6:00 right now. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at the weather and traffic in just a moment. developing now for you, this is an all-out effort to restore power across the bay area. this is following sunday's powerful storm. and you can see all the outages on this live map from pg&e. a short time ago we did get an update. there are now 65,000 customers without power now, this is down about 30,000 from last night. it includes more than 18,000 in santa clara county, 14,000 on the peninsula, and about 19,000 in sonoma county. contra costa county almost fully restored, while marin and solano county are under 5,000. >> it's been a tough few days for a lot of people without power there. and it could be cold in your

house as well. the temperatures are dropping and we have colder temperatures on the way. at least for most of us the rain is tapering off. there's still some lingering light showers moving through. as you're heading out the door and maybe still dealing with cleanup today, trying to pick up some of those branches and some of the property damage that you had from over the past couple of days, the heavier rain has shifted to the south and we will catch a bit of a break. as we track it with stormranger, not showing nearly as much activity as we had yesterday morning. union city, starting with temperatures in the mid-40s, fog drifting around, and we will see peeks of sunshine. if you don't have power, it is very cold and our temperatures will head for the mid to upper 50s today. overall a cool afternoon, with more rain coming in tomorrow. mike, you've been tracking the commute. looking smooth right now? >> pretty calm. we know we're going to have the backup. it's tuesday and the bay bridge has finally filled in. it took a little longer than

your typical tuesday. i think folks were easing off on the commute this morning. things are much calmer than yesterday, and definitely much calmer than the weekend. highway 4 shows a typical volume. highway 37 shows slowing out of vallejo. highway 12 and 121 no longer have traffic control through that portion of sonoma county. we're looking along the peninsula, a nice easy drive. the south bay did have a burst and a couple of crashes in san jose as the rain traveled through about an hour ago. things are calmer now. a build for 237 and no problems for the tri-valley. smooth, damp roadways, so watch the speeds until the sun can dry things out a little more. >> thank you, mike. breaking this morning, country music superstar toby keith has lost his battle with cancer. ♪♪ ♪ i should have been a cowboy ♪ ♪ i should have learned to

rope ♪ ♪ riding my pony on a cattle drive ♪ >> his family posting a statement overnight saying he died surrounded by family late in the evening. keith emerged on the country scene in 1993. some of his biggest hits include what you just heard right there, "red solo cup" and "i want to talk about me". about a year and a half ago he announced he was living with stomach cancer. he was 62 years old. had a good voice. right now we want to talk to you about a new obstacle for oakland a's in their quest to build a new ballpark in las vegas. nevada teachers are taking new legal action, they're trying to shut down funding. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us with a closer look at what this may mean for the a's. >> it's interesting timing, just as las vegas is rolling out the welcome mat for the san francisco 49ers, nevada teachers want to roll up the welcome mat

for the oakland a's and shut down the stadium. nevada lawmakers agreed to a $380 million funding package toward a baseball stadium on the las vegas strip, but the teachers union says this money should be going toward education and other public needs. the a's are not named in the lawsuit, which alleges that the bill to help fund the stadium was not passed on constitutional grounds, and that the state is taking on debt that should land with the county that the stadium would be in, which is clark county. at the same time, the teachers are trying to put the funding bill to a public vote rather than allow lawmakers to negotiate the deal. the effort is still under way. it's not clear if that is going to pan out. this, of course, could affect the timeline for the a's. they want to be ready to play ball in 2028, so any time we have something like this come up, it could change that timeline. >> might not be the last,

either. >> it may not. it's interesting timing because we have so many people that are going to be in las vegas for the super bowl. it is a local issue. >> right, they want their voices heard. >> thank you. happening today, gop presidential contender nikki haley is scheduled to make two appearances in the bay area. she's expected to attend the first fundraiser, a luncheon, in san francisco, and then a dinner in atherton. atherton venture capitalist tim draper is hosting the event along with his wife. the exact locations of each of those events is not being disclosed to the public. haley is not scheduled to make any public appearances while here in the bay area. and our scott mcgrew spoke with tim draper on nikki haley. stay tuned for that coming up at 6:45. another closure hitting home this morning in san francisco. this one involving a one of a kind restaurant, nightclub and cabaret with a remarkably unique history. ginger conejero saab joins us in san francisco. boy, this is hitting the

community hard. this is a big surprise. >> reporter: it is quite a surprise. asia sf is a long-running nightclub and cabaret. it's a favorite for locals and tourists. it's been around for over 25 years, laura. like many businesses that have recently closed in san francisco, its loss will be felt. it's what it really means for the transgender community that may not be so easily replaced. now, asia sf has been a platform for transgender performers of color who have historically been excluded from other venues of performing arts. you're seeing what it looks like inside the venue, minus the show, of course. now, performers sing on stage, along the bar, as people enjoy their dinner. asia sf has welcomed trans performers of color for decades and provided a venue for their live performances. its founder says they have not been able to rebound from the pandemic, so he and his partners have decided to close and enjoy

retirement. >> we would love the community to rally around asia sf and come in and see the magic that we create here and fill up all of our reservations between now and the end of march. >> reporter: well, the last day for asia sf is scheduled for sunday, march 31st, which coincides with international transgender visibility day, and even though the business at 9th and howard is closing, the owners say don't be surprised if an asia sf pop-up pops up in the future. so that's at least something to look forward to. but, laura, i mean, i really bet that that last performance, the last day will be a huge show that many people are not going to want to miss. they're going to go out with a bang. >> kind of along the lines of beach blanket babylon, some iconic places in san francisco. let's hope people turn out. who knows, maybe they can show up somewhere else or keep the lights on. thanks, ginger. happening now, parts of

southern california are still under a winter storm warning, so the weekend rain there is triggering a lot of mudslides and also causing major damage to l.a. homes. parts of ventura, san bernardino and riverside counties are still under a winter storm warning until tonight. >> let's bring in meteorologist kari hall. she's been keeping track of what's been going on there. they've had so much rain. >> so much rainfall and it's still coming down. there's still the risk of more mudslides. we're also still getting the high winds and the heavy rain, so we're seeing a lot of daily rainfall records being set. there are parts of the coastal mountains that had over 12 inches of rainfall in just 24 hours, and now we can see with the colder temperatures there's some snow for those higher elevations. now we're seeing still some lingering light showers here in the bay area, but definitely a lot calmer compared to what they still have going on in southern california, and our temperatures are only in the mid-40s. we are going to have a cool day. we do want to keep the jackets

mortgage rate, up above 7% again for the average 30-year fixed. this is to be expected. money comes out of stocks, yields and bonds go up, mortgage rates go up. it's a good reminder, you make or lose money, but the money itself is not lost. it just moves around from stocks into bonds or back, and the stock market is not the economy and the economy is not the stock market. a travel company did a survey of travel professionals and they predict air travel disruptions will continue for years to come. airlines say they continue to be short-staffed and don't expect to find enough workers any time soon. we lost the expertise, the people who knew exactly what to do because they've seen that scenario before, one travel executive told bloomberg. meantime, the head of the faa will testify before congress this morning. most of the questions are going to be about boeing and the faa's oversight of the airplane

builder. faa chair mike whitaker is expected to promise more inspectors at boeing factories. the company that makes those little robotic coolers on wheels, starship, said it got $90 million more in funding, based in san francisco and estonia, mostly delivers on college campuses. the $90 million comes from venture capital. sand hill road is where we find a lot of those venture capital firms, and any time we talk about it, we're usually talking about millions and billions. but the people who work there sometimes came from very little. case in point, frederick gross, who grew up as a kid moving motel to motel as his parents tried to find housing. then in college, frederick was able to help them out. >> you bought your parents a house while you were still in college. what, 19, 20? >> yeah, i was 20. >> 20? you bought your parents a house? >> that's right.

>> you don't often say that. >> before 4:00. >> and probably bundle up if you're headed out there. it's going to be cold this weekend, but at least we don't have to worry about any storms coming our way. we'll have a chance to just be in the moment. let's get a look at our live view in san francisco where we do have low clouds rolling by. you're probably wondering, where are we after all of that rain with our water year, and we are still at a surplus in santa rosa, after getting over 24 inches of rain. we are 4 inches above what's normal. we are still lacking in oakland and concord, in the east bay we were running some huge rainfall deficits. we're getting caught up and we're seeing at least for the next few hours a bit of a chance to dry out. still lingering light showers, all of the heavy rain hitting southern california. and they're getting very extraordinary amounts of rainfall there. we'll continue to monitor. as we get a look at livermore, what to expect, it's going to be partly to mostly cloudy and some

peeks of sunshine, with temperatures only making it into the mid-50s. we're going to see a high of 55 there and in dublin, as well as 57 in oakland and san francisco and 59 in novato. it will be cooler tomorrow, but this is as a cold front moves through and will drop temperatures even more with our morning temperatures in the 30s. but we will get one more wave of rain late tomorrow morning into the afternoon, and still some very spotty showers into the evening. but we are going to have that bring us about another quarter to half inch of rainfall. keep in mind that that additional rain is falling on ground that is already saturated, so most likely it's just going to sit on top, cause more puddles. once again, we'll have a chance to dry out in the extended forecast. there will be another slight chance of rain for the north bay on friday, but it will be weakening as it moves in. for the weekend, we're dry with no more major storms coming our way, and temperatures gradually warming up. a look at our seven-day forecast shows a slight chance of showers

today, a better chance tomorrow. temperatures in the 50s through friday. the weekend is looking great for any of the plans that you have, whether you're celebrating the lunar new year or celebrating the super bowl. we are going to have temperatures in the 60s with sunshine. mike, you're seeing it building coming out of the east bay? >> aside from the bridges, the toll plaza out of richmond and the bay bridge toll plaza out of oakland, things are calm, aside from these. these are the biggest backups. hov, big advantage right there at the bay bridge. speeds are just fine, highway 4 continues to show a little more slowing out of pittsburg and all the way toward highway 24 and watch 580 and 680, they're all starting to build. a little slowing just pops up over here in walnut creek. north bay holds pretty steady with highway 37, and we're looking at 880 southbound through hayward out of san leandro. that's where the build really is there. the dublin interchange the fine, but 84 shows more slowing. just a tad bit.

turning to our climate in crisis, new research from uc berkeley says if we want to keep our forests healthy and protected from severe wildfires, we have to use different management techniques. the 20-year fire study showed scientists that restoration thinning, prescribed burns or a combination of both, can reduce the risk of a massive blaze. researchers worked out of an experimental forest north of sacramento. some of their plots were managed, others they left alone. scientists wanted to see how many trees would be resilient to climate change, whether it be huge wildfires, drought or invasive bark beetles. at the end of the 20 years, they found at least 80% of the trees they manage would have a chance of survival. dr. scott stevens from uc berkeley says something like

the san francisco 49ers! >> 49ers officially kicking off super bowl week in las vegas. we're taking you inside allegiant stadium for an up-close look at all that excitement. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. certainly a lot to get to this morning. we want to talk about that weather first. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect. dealing with a lot of rain, wind, all in the past few days. >> it is looking so much calmer now compared to even yesterday at this time as we were heading out the door. it's still damp outside, and the cars in front of you driving on the roadways may be still kicking up some water. we do have some puddles and lingering light showers. overall, all of the heavier rain, those high winds have

shifted into southern california, and we are just going to see a slight chance of rain today. but a chance to dry out for the most part as we take a look at our day planner for castro valley. we're in the upper 40s to start and heading into the upper 50s today. it will be chilly, so keep the jacket on. we'll need the umbrellas tomorrow. i'll have more on that and looking ahead to a sunny weekend in a few minutes. well, developing right now, the all-out push to restore power following sunday's powerful storm there. so a short time ago pg&e giving us some new updated numbers. about 65,000 customers are now without power, this is down from 95,000 just last night. >> it's an improvement, but there's a lot of people frustrated. bob redell joins us in hayward at cal state east bay. i understand that campus will stay closed for a second day straight. >> reporter: correct, and you can see why. that's the digital screen that greets drivers as they pull onto

campus here. it is turned off. all the power is shut down on campus because of the storm on sunday. yes, campus will be shut down for the second day in a row. cal state east bay does say the remote online learning still goes on on their campuses in oakland and concord, not impacted by this. just the location here in hayward. this is a live look of pg&e's online outage mab, you can see thousands of customers without power, especially in the south bay, up the peninsula, through sf and into napa and sonoma. if it says the power should be back on tonight by 11:00 p.m., pg&e tells us there is a possibility that it could come on sooner, it could come on before then. so something to keep in mind. the utility says that just in santa clara county they received reports of damage to their equipment at 700 different locations. yesterday workers removed trees and branches, they began fixing downed power lines and power poles.

in willow glen, residents were using their cars as charging stations for their devices. one man tells us he borrowed a generator from one neighbor while another neighbor let him and his family use their shower. >> my wife is, like, can we please take a warm shower, and, heck, yeah. >> we don't have any estimated time of when everybody will have their power back. >> it's hard to say and it's going to be very different for every community. it all depends on access. right now we're prioritizing critical infrastructure and critical customers. >> reporter: a number of schools are shut down due to the power outage, in san jose the east side union high school district will shut down oak grove and yerba buena high schools today. there's school closures due to not only power outages but other storm related issues, this is sonoma county, the dunham school district closed, fort ross elementary shut down, harmony

union school district and kashia school district closed. the twin hills has closed, apple blossom, and orchard. reporting live in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> the power of those storms, so many people still out. thank you so much. 6:35, and it's time to talk about the hype that is officially on right now, ramping up things ahead of super bowl lviii. this morning giving you a live look at allegiant stadium where last night the first super bowl event kicked off. >> raj mathai has an up-close look at the opening night of the super bowl and some of the signature moments. >> reporter: good morning from las vegas. this is voting day in nevada, the democratic primary is today. but we're not talking politics, we're talking football. the 49ers will practice later on today, this is their first real

workout since arriving in vegas a couple nights ago. last tight they had a little fun along with the fans. they called it opening night of the super bowl. take a look. >> the san francisco 49ers! >> reporter: when you hear that, you know you're in vegas. that's mma announcer bruce buffer. this is the super bowl opening night party. tickets were about 50 bucks, so this was an affordable way to see the players up close and personal. this is the one and only time all week until the game the niners and chiefs will meet face to face, even exchanging a few hugs. not much substance, but we saw some cool moments. >> if it comes down to it, brock, and it's late in the fourth quarter, are you prepared to disappoint taylor swift? >> yes.

the "today" show or "today in the bay." >> what a way to kick off the weekend. certainly going into the weekend, weather-wise, it's going to be nice there. >> it's going to be nice but chilly. that's what we've been saying. they are getting some rain now, but by the time we get to the weekend in vegas, it's going to only reach into the low 50s, and look at those overnight temperatures in the upper 30s. so pack more than just your jersey in your suitcase. you'll need a nice, warm coat. if you're celebrating here across the bay area, really not much warmer. we're still in the 50s here, and at least it will be dry. we're not tracking any major storms. and we're looking at sunshine. but getting through the next 24 to 36 hours, we are going to see some more rain. a quick wave of showers passing by, this one with a cold front and noon tomorrow we may be dealing with some brief heavy downpours and still some lingering showers into tomorrow afternoon into the evening, but then drying out as we head toward thursday, and another slight chance on friday.

we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you were updating another crash in san jose. >> same zone for north 101. we saw it pop up around oakland road. it is right around oakland road. maybe on the shoulder, but the slow lane may be blocked. we see slowing up past berryessa, alum rock, now there's building on 87. typical pattern, timing, a little more extensive than we sometimes see on a tuesday. this zone changed over the last ten minutes with the volume building and speeds slowing. north of there things are moving nicely, but the commute is southbound where we see a crash still approaching mission boulevard on southbound 680, a distraction but the transition is clear. 880 shows you a similar volume build coming out of the rest of fremont and starting back over at the san mateo bridge, which westbound builds as well. back to you. 6:40 right now. lending a helping hand to those who need it the most.

6:43 this morning. the house may vote to impeach president biden's secretary of homeland security as soon as today. >> what they're not going to do is vote on the plan to protect the border. >> that's right, today or possibly ever. the bill written in part by republicans solves many of the problems they're accusing homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas of. the house rules committee yesterday voted to forward the impeachment to the full house. if the full house votes today and a majority vote yes, then mayorkas is impeached, only the second cabinet secretary in u.s. history to be impeached. now, a reminder, that doesn't mean he's out of office. he doesn't get kicked out of office because he has to go on trial in the senate first, and the senate is run by democrats. members of the congress in the house homeland security committee never did charge mayorkas with traditional high crimes and misdemeanors called for in the constitution.

mayorkas never did testify before the committee during its investigation. those committee members say they're worried mayorkas is letting too many immigrants into the united states under the current asylum laws, but as we've discussed in the past, there's a bill to limit the number of immigrants, a bill that would give the president the power to shut down the border regularly, like daily, but speaker mike johnson says he won't allow that bill in the house to take a vote on it. >> the product itself is not worth the house's consideration and that's why it's dead on arrival. >> many pundits in washington think johnson won't allow a vote because if he did, members of his own party would vote yes. we've talked in the past about how powerful this bill actually is when you get into the details. critics say not powerful enough, but it's the best deal on the border republicans have gotten in a decade. candidate for president nikki haley asking for secret

service protection early. generally speaking, candidates only get this kind of protection once they're nominated. but haley and her family have been the victim of threats and swatting. senator barack obama also needed protection early in his campaign as well. now, she's going to be in san francisco today for a luncheon and then in atherton this evening to raise money for her campaign. billionaire tim draper is hosting her, and i talked to draper about his support and how long it might last. >> she's behind in the polls, she did not win iowa, she did not win new hampshire and she's behind in south carolina. but she could stick around so long as she had the funding, and people like you are able to find that funding for her. would you stick with her even if she continued to lose because she operates as this thorn in donald trump's side? >> well, yes, i'll stay with her as long as she is in the race, but i think she's in the race.

today. as of right now, the temperatures are fairly chilly. we're in the mid-40s, walnut creek 45, 44 in san francisco, and san jose at 51 degrees. and there will be some spotty showers here and there, but it won't be until tomorrow late morning, we'll see a quick wave of rain passing by around lunchtime for the south bay, and then isolated showers into the afternoon. this is out ahead of a cold front, so we know it's going to get even colder over the next couple of days. additional rainfall for us will be at about a quarter to half inch of rain, and once again that's tomorrow morning for the most part. so any of this rain that we get will just basically sit on top of the ground. we don't have anywhere for it to go. more puddles and possibly a little bit of a problem for tomorrow evening's commute. looking at friday, we're going to see some north bay showers coming in and it looks to dissipate before it moves into the rest of the bay area. so a slight chance on friday. then we are all clear for the

weekend with no more major storms coming our way. that's the big headline. for the sierra, if you're going there between tomorrow's storm into thursday, we are going to see about 3 to 9 inches of snowfall there. then clearing out for the weekend. looking at our seven-day forecast, we are going to have some cold mornings ahead, definitely going back to winter. we have upper 30s in the forecast for the next several days and our afternoon highs only up to the low 60s. looking great for a super bowl sunday. mike, you're starting with a look at highway 92. >> looking good. the san mateo bridge is showing a slower commute with more traffic for the commute to the peninsula. we see the speed sensors slowing. then 92 at skyline, we're hearing about a crash, calling it out because that is a critical junction two or from half moon bay or coming up highway 35. we're looking at a smooth drive for the south bay but the build continues to ripple. 85 shows slowing, 101, 87, 280,

6:56 this morning. welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at our top stories here on "today in the bay." >> including breaking news this morning, country music superstar toby keith has lost his battle with cancer. his family posting a statement overnight saying he died late last night surrounded by family. keith first emerged on the country scene in 1993. about a year and a half ago he announced he was living with stomach cancer. toby keith was 62 years old. efforts are under way to restore power across the bay area following sunday's powerful storm. you can see all of the outages on this live map from pg&e. there are now about 65,000 customers without power, down 30,000 from last night. it includes more than 18,000 in santa clara county, 14,000 on the peninsula, and about 19,000

in sonoma county. a new legal snag this morning for the oakland a's and their push to build a new ballpark in las vegas. nevada teachers are suing to halt funding. the union says when lawmakers approved $380 million for funding, it never passed on constitutional grounds which would require a two-thirds vote in the assembly and senate. teachers are trying to put the bill to a public vote. the a's are still planning to move from oakland after the coming season. another closure hitting home in san francisco, asia sf, a legendary nightclub featuring performers from the transgender community will close. the founder says it's been hard to recover from the pandemic and he and his partners have decided to close and enjoy retirement. the last day will be march 1st, which coincides with international transgender visibility day. let's take a live look in las vegas. allegiant stadium. the countdown to super bowl
