the 49ers and chiefs. we've got all things game day ahead on "today in the bay." it's going to be a great friday morning. thank you so much for starting your morning with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. >> we're going to go out to that pep rally in just a moment that is happening. it's amazing how many people got up. >> that was not vegas. >> we're used to getting up in the middle of the night, but it's nice to see so many people as well. we're excited for the weekend and our niners. the weather is cooperating, too. >> it's cooperating, but it's chilly. i think we would like it a little warmer, but we'll take it. we are dealing with a frost advisory in effect this morning from now until 9:00, and we're looking at temperatures in the mostly 30s, but there could be some upper 20s in a few spots. and as we take a look at where we are right now, in dublin it is 35 degrees. it is 39 in martinez, san francisco at 41 degrees, and 35

in sonoma. cold start, but this is a look at our afternoon high temperatures, headed for the mid to upper 50s. very much like it was yesterday, but we won't sees many clouds and no chance of rain. we are going to be clearing out going into the afternoon. i'll have more on that for you. mike, you have a warning for drivers through san jose. >> i do. we checked the grid to see when folks are cleared from the overnight road work and caltrans says it is clear, but we see slowing past curtner. i heard about some earlier debris, that someone had a flat tire because of the debris, they were forced off the shoulder area as they passed through downtown for the crews that were clearing at that point. do wash the flashing lights. there's debris from the work they did overnight and they're trying to keep it clear. there's a crash near the san mateo bridge, a couple of locations reported. looking at green sensors around most of the bay. the live look from the toll

plaza shows westbound is okay. i'll check on the details out of hayward coming up. >> thank you very much. we're t-minus 3 days away from super bowl sunday. a live look at allegiant stadium in las vegas. niners fans here in the bay area are certainly pumped. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is at our very own pep rally happening at the lot in city center in bishop ranch in san ramon. that party has been hopping since 4:00 a.m. >> reporter: if you want to come to the lot bar restaurant here at city center bishop ranch in san ramon, you still have time to get on the "today" show. we're not going live. we've got everyone here. we're not going live for another 30 minutes or so. you still have time. a number of these people have been out here for at least an hour. we've got franco, super fan. how many people do you think we've got? >> a thousand plus. >> i would say it's 900. >> we're right there. >> you're a dedicated fan.

you obviously were able to get this number of people out here. what is it about the 49ers faithful compared to other fan bases? >> we're so deep rooted right here in the bay. i go way back to the days when my parents, my family, uncles and everybody. this faithful fan base is multi generations. we've seen a lot in our lifetime and we're ready to be here in the super bowl again and win it this time around, and bring that love right here back to the bay. this is the biggest moment right now in sports and we are here and ready to go and get hyped up. >> reporter: i was going to ask a question. how many people here have had their cup of coffee? here. here in san ramon, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> that was great. how fun. >> a lot of fun out there. you know what, as for the scene in vegas, things are hardly calm before the storm, what we call super bowl sunday. >> the nfl celebrating itself and handing out some precious hardware. our raj mathai had a late night taking it all in. >> reporter: hello from the resorts world theatre where it all took down last night. red carpet treatment, a lot of vips in the house, including a surprise visitor, and for good reason. how about this, christian mccaffrey of the 49ers showed up to the awards show, and for good reason. mccaffrey was named the offensive player of the year. he earned it. the niners need mccaffrey to do just as well come sunday so they can beat the chiefs. as for the red carpet, we saw a little bit of everything. this is like the oscars for the nfl. you had all the vips, all the stars and even all the fashion

statements. there were some suits and dresses that i have no idea even how to describe. everyone looked great, even from the youngest fans to the oldest having a good time. what's going to happen this weekend? you're going to have a lot more parties tonight, a lot of more people coming in from the bay area in the next 48 hours and kickoff comes sunday at 3:30. back to you. >> keep it here on "today in the bay." nbc's jay gray will also join us live from las vegas in our 5:30 hour. he's got a look at everything happening in sin city this weekend. developing this morning, still many unanswered questions on the peninsula. this is after a man allegedly took a joyride to a whole new level. so authorities saying yesterday afternoon he stole a small plane from palo alto airport, then flew it over the bay area skies before landing it on a beach in half moon bay. witnesses say that he ran out of gas. deputies did make an arrest, but only after they say the suspect ran from the scene.

he's identified as a 50-year-old man from south florida. again, a lot of unanswered questions here this morning. our ginger conejero saab is getting to the bottom of it all. she'll have a live report coming up in our next half hour. we have a live look in san jose, where teams this morning are starting the process of moving dozens of decommissioned vta paratransit cars that sat idle or four years. this follows a report from our investigative unit that discovered the fleet just sitting there where they've been parked since 2020. the cars are past their useful life in terms of mileage and reliability. the agency says auction plans stalled when the pandemic took hole. the removal of the cars is expected to take weeks because only a few will be towed at a time. happening today, three men accused in the shooting of a security guard who died protecting a television news crew are due back in court. one of the three, laron gilbert, will be arraigned. authorities recently arrested him after he spent two years on the run.

police arrested the other two suspects shortly after the shooting and now the cases are being combined. the victim, kevin nishita, was a retired police officer shot in downtown oakland. today's preliminary hearing is expected to including topics, including a possible trial location. new help for north bay seniors trying to make it in the bay. a healthy aging campus is opening in 3rd street and it will offer affordable housing units and provides activities and programs meant to promote healthy aging. today's ribbon cutting happens at noon. turning back to our super bowl coverage this morning with a live look outside at allegiant stadium. we've seen people bundled up in some of the live shots we've seen from the vegas area. it's a cold start there and here in the bay area as well. >> we've got chilly temperatures settling in across the region. at least it is drying out. if you are going to be packing

up and heading to vegas this weekend, wanted to show you what to pack this morning. we are starting out with temperatures in the 40s there, only headed for 51. that's the high temperature for today. and then down into the upper 30s for tonight, with mid-50s throughout the weekend, and sunday only 57 degrees. across the bay area about the same temperatures, it won't be as cold during the overnight in san francisco. we'll only see a high of about 60 for tomorrow and up to 59 on sunday. if you're in san jose, expect it to be slightly milder with our high temperatures for today in the upper 50s, but low 60s for saturday and sunday. it's going to be nice to get all of that sunshine throughout the entire weekend. we'll talk more about what's ahead coming up. mike, you still have that crash near hayward? >> i showed the san mateo bridge toll plaza and it's okay coming off of the 880 interchange, we did have a little slowing. it transitioned and we see slowing approaching the 92

interchange as it's backing up from tennyson. we are blocking at least one middle lane, perhaps two as you're traveling south from 92 where we showed you the live camera. getting into the area coming out of castro valley and the dublin interchange, 580 moves smoothly. san ramon where our pep rally is, stand by for that, you can probably hear it the entire tri-valley. the south bay, no problems. peninsula, getting toward the bay bridge, a nice easy drive. highway 37, slowing in the north bay hasn't started. highway 4 is also moving nicely. the walnut creek area we see some low clouds. that could be fog in a little while. but right now nothing registers on our road weather index. >> thank you so much. football is a lot of things, but some people ask the question, is it really sexy? >> one super fan certainly thinks so and she's on a mission to educate others one fan at a time. the new recognition she's getting during super bowl week

good friday morning. right now at 5:13, as you head out in the north bay, we are under a frost advisory. in santa rosa we'll see the frosty conditions lasting through about 9:00. after that, it will be partly cloudy and making it toward the upper 50s. a cool day, but it will be nice and quiet. we'll take a look at the weekend forecast coming up. the san mateo bridge, we're checking it again. i saw flashing lights right here, just at the end of the flat section. it looked like a traffic break for a couple of seconds. traffic is flowing, at least in part, across the span. a second crash reported. i'll bring you whatever i can coming up. good morning.

very happy friday to you. the stock market continues to amaze. the dow and the s&p 500 both setting new records. the s&p 500 crossing over 5,000. this is anheuser-busch, its stock jumped after former president trump told his supporters the war against bud light was over, the beer company is not woke, he says, and it's okay to drink bud light. google changing the name of its artificial intelligence from bard to gemini. bard referred to william shakespeare. they want gemini to be a name like siri or alexa. they're offering a subscription for $20 a month. i've said before, it's worth trying these things out to see if they're useful to you in your job or life. you won't know until you try it. all eyes will be on a falcon 9 business jet carrying taylor

swift to the super bowl. this is not her jet, but it's the exact same type and you can even look inside. although this one could be customized. it will set you back $54 million if you're buying new. fans will follow her on flight services like radar 24. it sounds boring, but people do it. hundreds of thousands watch nancy pelosi's plane as it traveled to taiwan, the first speaker of the house to visit taiwan, hundreds of thousands more watched the final trip of queen elizabeth from scotland back to london. here is a look at the east coast this morning. busier out there. you see those airplanes? the trick is going to be finding the right plane on its way to vegas. >> so it's certainly a possibility that any flight following from tokyo could land somewhere else and then find a different way to las vegas for the game. we just don't know. so we're preparing for everyone

rolling stones to get the party started this morning. this is at our niners fan pep rally going on at the lot at city center bishop ranch in san ramon right now. this is the monta vista band getting us ready for sunday's super bowl showdown. our bob redell just told us they'll be part of the "today" show coverage as well, later this morning. you can see them there and "today in the bay," of course, we'll have coverage from the bay area to vegas all morning long. i love that the kids got up early, all dressed up and everything. >> in tune. trending this morning, an nfl super fan getting all kinds of love for making football sexy. >> even the 49ers greatest of all time is getting in on the action. >> i heard about what you're doing to help grow the football fan base to include more women, and i think it's amazing. >> oh, yes, that is jerry rice

[ laughter ] >> exactly. >> i'm with you. it's going to be a good weekend, too. >> yes, and we have some nice clear weather, but we're wearing a few extra layers. it's february, as you mentioned yesterday, it's still winter. so it's, like, okay, i guess. we're going to have some cold temperatures with a frost advisory in effect through 9:00 a.m. but we're also watching out for king tides and a coastal flood advisory that will continue for today and then expire for tomorrow morning at 1:00. now, the weekend does stay dry, but we'll have some rain coming back next week. let's take a look at our temperatures. oakland, as you're stepping out the door, it's 41 degrees, it is 42 in san jose, walnut creek at 37 degrees, and 41 in san

francisco. our high temperature for today only makes it up to 55 degrees there, with oakland and san mateo reaching a high of 57 degrees. a lot of upper 50s. looking ahead, as we are seeing, okay, when is our next chance of rain here, it does stay dry through much of next week. but we may be watching some bigger storm systems coming in for next weekend, and we also have valentine's day on wednesday. so if you're thinking we're going to go out next weekend, just a heads-up if those are your plans, it's going to be raining most likely next weekend. so we're enjoying this weekend coming up with temperatures in the upper 30s and our highs in the low 60s. mike, how is the san mateo bridge? >> i've been watching closely because we had a couple of incidents, one had flashing lights and a traffic break. but it has been calm over the last few minutes, westbound, the commute direction picking up volume just a tad bit. holding steady with speeds. there is still a crash on the hayward side.

morning. it is very chilly to start out. even a frost advisory in effect as we are now in the upper 30s in walnut creek, and a lot of other areas across the bay are in the low 40s to start. but we are headed for the mid to upper 50s for this afternoon, we're going to see a high of 57 in fremont and san jose and much of the east bay. but as we go into the weekend, our temperatures remain the same, but we will have lots more sunshine in the forecast. we'll talk about our super bowl sunday and also some of the events going on around the bay area coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks so much, kari. super bowl sunday is almost here, and niners fans are ready. we want to give you a live look this morning at the niners pep rally. you can see the band right there. this is all going on at the lot at city center bishop ranch in san marrone. as you can imagine, those fans packing the place to chief for the niners.

many have been there since before 4:00 a.m. dedicated fans. >> the super bowl excitement, of course, extends beyond the bay area and the epicenter is really only about 500 or 600 miles away from here. >> "today in the bay"'s jay gray lucked out. he is in the middle of it all in las vegas where the niners play the chiefs. jay, i know you're at the nfl experience this morning where those fans really soak it all in, and it looks like nobody is there, so you get to roam around and do whatever you want. >> and you're staying neutral with your colors, jay. >> reporter: right? we snuck in early, and, yeah, these are the super bowl colors, because we're inside the nfl shop at the super bowl at experience where you can find anything football, everything super bowl, and of course halftime as well. this is the usher helmet. usher, of course, the star of the halftime show. he's got a collab with the nfl, so he's got the t shirts, the jackets, sweatshirts, hoodies.

all of the stuff you need to celebrate usher and the super bowl as las vegas hosts its first ever super bowl. friday means it's officially super bowl weekend in vegas. fans gearing up, super bowl merch a must have as the party kicks into full gear. >> really excited. can't explain it with words. >> reporter: thousands traveling to vegas for all of the fun and hype, many with no plans to head to allegiant stadium on game day. >> we're excited to pay our mortgage for 12 months instead of two tickets for 30 grand. >> reporter: the guys who don't need tickets continuing to grind toward sunday's big game. >> studying and being prepared for every little situation and circumstance. >> i'm doing whatever it takes for the super bowl win, for sure. >> reporter: of course there would be no super bowl without a game ball, and every year wilson brings a little part of its factory in ada, ohio, to the big

game, to show fans the process of making an nfl football. >> these folks sew footballs every day. >> reporter: every ball, from the preseason through the super bowl, is handmade, and thankfully not by my hands. >> we're trying to make it look like a football. >> reporter: i mean, i was so bad, i got sympathy cheers of support during my struggles. still, somehow, with a lot of help from my friends -- >> you did a good job. >> reporter: -- we actually made a super bowl football. yep, here is the proof. this is that ball that we -- well, let's be honest, it's the ball they made and i just kind of got in the way a little bit. if i had to do that myself, it would have taken about a week and this would look nothing like a football. but you can get a football here

dad took him to his first game at 5 years old and he's cheered on the team for decades. after being injured as a child, he battled several health problems, including eye surgeries that were on and off until he was diagnosed with cancer at 30 years old. >> i had to remove one of my eyes and the first thing i wanted to do was asked for a niner day instead of a regular eye. >> he was selected as the 49ers fan of the year back in 2022 and his home is certainly filled with a lot of memorabilia from the team. he hopes to watch the team take home the lombardi trophy. >> it will be 38-21, i think we're going to get on top quick and we're not going to drop the ball. this is our year and our team is amazing. i couldn't ask for a better year. >> he doesn't just root for the team. he also supports the community every year helping with toy drives for kids in need. it's nice to see how he gives back as well. our teammates at nbc bay area sports have you covered. tune into 49ers pre and postgame

live as the team brings you complete game coverage, live from allegiant stadium on sunday. the pregame coverage starts at 1:30 in the afternoon. switching gears this morning, union city police are leading the effort to track down a 12-year-old girl last seen at her middle school yesterday. her name is miabella gomez. she is about 140 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. they say that she was last seen at cesar chavez middle school a little after 4:00 p.m. we have a live look in san jose where teams this morning are starting the process of moving dozens of decommissioned vta paratransit cars that sat idle for four years. it follows a recent report by our investigative unit that discovered the fleet sitting there where they've been parked for years, since 2020. the cars are past their useful life in terms of mileage and reliability, but the agency says auction plans stalled when the pandemic took effect. the removal of the cars is

expected to take weeks because only a few will be towed at a time. a surreal scene on half moon bay beach in what, frankly, sounds like a surreal story. authorities say that a man hopped into a plane about 25 miles away and just took off flying. this morning there are unanswered questions. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab joins us live in palo alto this morning where the plane was parked at one point. she's explaining the unusual chain of events here, ginger. >> reporter: it is quite unusual, marcus and laura, and there are still many unanswered questions, including why and how this plane was stolen. the plane landed in half moon bay, but we are at palo alto's airport because this is where the plane was believed to have been stolen. now, this morning san mateo county sheriff's office continues its investigation into how someone stole a red and white plane from this airport. you're seeing that plane on

poplar beach in half moon bay nose down. investigators were on scene into the night piecing together what happened. a witness was in the area when she says she saw a plane flying frighteningly low as she was walking on the beach with her dad and dog. >> i came back around and down to the beach and it was flying really low, landed, sort of, and then the tail -- sorry, the nose plunked into the sand. the guy hopped out, he said he ran out of gas and walked off. >> we've been doing this for almost 20 years and this is a first for me. >> reporter: authorities detained a man near the beach a little while later. he is a 50-year-old man from the miami dade area in florida. the sheriff's office does not know if that person is affiliated to the airport or if that person was a pilot. they are working with palo alto's police department to look into this and answer more questions. the good news, so far we do know that no one was injured in the

strange and unusual chain of events. >> luckily someone didn't get hurt. thanks, ginger. 5:39 right now. we take a live look out at sfo this morning, where this is a busy day for the faithful heading to vegas for the super bowl, and they're in for a warm welcome. alaska and united airlines showing out for niners fans. flight 13 actually includes an endorsement deal with brock purdy, who wears the number 13. fans on that flight will receive a niners rally towel and the gate will be decorated red and gold. >> definitely a memorable send-off. if you've thought about driving, mike is diving deeper into that for us. >> folks trying to get a little break. >> how about the patience? we're going to check in with kari. she's got a look at the weekend forecast. >> looking nice and chilly, as you're maybe packing the bag to get ready to head to vegas. we're seeing temperatures there for today reach a high of 51

degrees. tonight it's dropping down to the upper 30s and tomorrow in the mid-50s. so it's going to overall be a cool weekend, but it will be sunny and looking nice and bright and golden for sunday. if you're staying around town, you might want to check out the santana row lunar new year celebration that will be happening. our temperatures go from mid-50s to the upper 50s, with a mostly sunny sky. there will also be mardi gras parade happening in san francisco. that's going to be on powell street from 1:30 to 6:00. we're going to see some nice weather there as well, with a mostly sunny sky and temperatures in the upper 50s. the napa lighted art festival will be happening throughout the evenings into the weekend, but the lantern parade will be on saturday evening, and even after sunset the temperatures go from mid-60s and drop fairly quickly with an overnight low in the upper 30s. if you're going to tahoe, still light snow flurries today and a

former vice president joe biden took some documents with him after he left washington, the same way that jack smith was assigned to investigate the same thing about donald trump. in biden's case, the special counsel decided not to press charges, but it is the report that is so awful for biden. in the report, hur describes biden as a well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory and diminished faculties in advancing age who had trouble remembering when asked about the documents. hur said biden had trouble with dates, like what year he was vice president. hur even claimed biden couldn't remember when his son died of cancer, which in furiated the president. >> there's reference that i don't remember when my son died. how in the hell dare he raise

30-second spot, it adds up. as for kickoff time, he's thinking 3:33 p.m., give or take a few seconds or minutes. super bowl is more than just a game for many casual watchers. it's more about the halftime show. >> it will transform into a huge concert. we all know the performer, usher, is the headliner and he's going to have an extra two minutes compared to previous halftime show performers, and he plans to deliver on a combination of his 30 years of performing. >> there's a fantasy list and people trying to figure out what song i'm going to perform first, who is going to come on the stage with me. i was very mindful of my past, celebrating my present, which is here in las vegas, and thinking about where we're headed in the future. and that was really the idea. >> now, usher not getting paid to perform. the nfl never pays its halftime performers. but you can be sure it will

that will be late morning for us today and tomorrow. and then looking at the bigger picture and what's happening across the region, we are seeing some lingering showers across southern california and then we're in between with some high pressure building in, but also some cold air dropping down into the bay area. so our highs today will only be in the upper 50s. it will be 57 in san jose, 58 in east san jose, and in milpitas. and we'll see a high of 58 in walnut creek, some upper 50s for fremont today. livermore topping out at 55 degrees, and 58 in palo alto. daly city will reach a high of 56 degrees and some mid-50s in san francisco. for the north bay, headed up to 57 for napa, as well as santa rosa and novato. so looking ahead, when will it rain again? well, it will be a while, which i think we're pretty fine with, we're okay with that, because there looks to be some bigger storms ahead for next weekend, by next friday and saturday we

could possibly see another atmospheric river coming in. so we'll be tracking that. but i'm putting a lot of sunshine icons here on the seven-day forecast, and our temperatures gradually getting milder over the next few days. we do have valentine's day coming up for the middle of next week. so much going on this weekend, you'll probably not be able to celebrate. but just be mindful that next weekend it may be raining and we're looking at temperatures in san francisco in the mid-50s for today, low 60s as we go into next week. mike, you found new spots out there? >> a few that are developing. over here on the incline it's great, on the bay bridge, things are nice and light. the metering lights are on but there's no backup at the toll plaza. through the tunnel you're fine, and then you slow a bit toward the exits. you see that pattern on the bridge itself with the slowing on the second half of the bridge. they slowed down the metering lights, there's more gathering at the toll plaza. we're looking over here toward 37, also a little slowing out of
