showing up and showing out for their team ahead of super bowl lviii in las vegas. and the scene is nearly set for the 49ers and the chiefs from the bay area to sin city, we have all things game day ahead right here on "today in the bay." good friday morning to you. thank you for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we have so much to cover. we're going to go back out to our bay area pep rally in just a moment. let's start with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been timing out the important outlook. >> it's starting out cold, but we are going to see some sunshine in our forecast. we are going to be all clear as you get ready to head out this morning. also a frost advisory in effect until 9:00. then we also have a coastal flood advisory due to king tides, and some of the low-lying areas both this morning and tomorrow morning. and then the weekend staying dry with rain moving back in late next week.

let's take a look at our temperatures today. upper 50s for much of the inland east bay, and then we're going to see for the north bay up to 57 degrees in novato. san francisco, 55, really not much of a difference from the north bay to the south bay. but the main thing we've been saying is that we are taking a break from any rain and it will be slightly warmer tomorrow. so i'll have more on this in the microclimate forecast coming up. well, we are now three days away from super bowl sunday. want to give you a live look at allegiant stadium in las vegas. there is a lot of action happening in sin city, but the niners fans right here at home in the bay area, they're pumped as well. >> they sure are. "today in the bay"'s bob redell is at our pep rally happening at the lot at city center bishop ranch. the party started at 4:00 a.m. what a crowd, bob. >> reporter: yeah, good morning.

49ers fans are showing up into the parking lot. >> oh, man. >> so much energy and excitement. it's not allowing the frequencies to go through so we can see bob live. that is where all the fun is. i can tell you hundreds of people are out there this morning showing up to support our 49ers. so thank you to all of them. >> it's nice to see the enthusiasm and excitement. >> the scene is set not only here in the bay area, but also in vegas. things there are hardly calm before the storm of super bowl sunday. >> in a good way. the nfl is celebrating by handing out precious hardware. our raj mathai had a late night taking it all in. >> reporter: hello from the resorts world theatre where it all took down last night. you had a red carpet treatment, a lot of vips in the house, including a surprise visitor, and for good reason. christian mccaffrey of the 49ers showed up to the awards show,

and for good reason. mccaffrey was named the offensive player of the year. he earned it. the niners need mccaffrey to do just as well come sunday so they can beat the chiefs. as for the red carpet, we saw a little bit of everything. this is like the oscars for the nfl. you had all the vips, all the star, and then, yes, even all the fashion statements. there were some suits and dresses that i have no idea even how to describe. but everyone looked great, even from the youngest fans to the oldest having a good time. so what's going to happen this weekend? you're going to have a lot more parties tonight, a lot more people coming from the bay area in the next 48 hours, and then, of course, kickoff comes sunday at 3:30. back to you. >> thank you very much. keep it here on "today in the bay." damian trujillo will join us in our next half hour. we've got a look at the band keeping the halftime hopes alive, even though it's usher's stage this weekend. want to turn to some developing news this morning on the peninsula. still many unanswered questions.

this is after one man allegedly took a joyride to a whole new level. now, authorities say yesterday afternoon he stole this small plane from a palo alto airport and flew it across the bay area before landing at the beach at half moon bay. witnesses say that he ran out of gas. deputies did make an arrest, but only after they say the suspect ran from the scene. he's identified as a 50-year-old man from south florida. again, a lot of unanswered questions this morning. ginger conejero saab is on top of this, getting to the bottom of it all. she'll have a live report coming up in the next half hour. happening today, three men accused in the shooting of a security guard who died protecting a tv news crew are due back in court. one of the three, laron gilbert, will be arraigned today. authorities recently arrested him after he spent two years on the run. police arrested the other two suspects shortly after the shooting and now the cases are being combined. the victim, kevin nishita, was a retired police officer who was shot in downtown oakland.

today's preliminary hearing is expected to cover topics including a possible trial location. as of today, new help for north bay seniors trying to make it in the bay. vivalon healthy aging campus is opening on 3rd street in san rafael. it's going to offer 67 affordable housing units and combine medical services with coordinated care. it provides activities and programs meant to promote healthy aging. today's ribbon cutting happens at noon. we're now three days away from super bowl sunday and we have a live look at allegiant stadium in las vegas. a lot of action happening in sin city, but niners fans in the bay area are pumped. >> our bob redell is at our own pep rally this morning happening at the lot, city center bishop ranch in san ramon. folks showed up before 4:00 a.m. >> reporter: if you want to come to the bar restaurant here, you still have time to get on the "today" show.

we're not going live -- we've got everyone here, we're not going live for another 30 minutes or so. you still have time. a number of these people have been out here for at least an hour. we've got franco, super fan. how many people do you think we've got? >> we've got like a thousand plus. >> i would say it's 900. >> we're right there. >> you're a dedicated fan. you said this has been part of your family for a number of years. you obviously were able to get this number of people out here. what is it about the 49ers faithful compared to other fan bases? >> we're so deep rooted right here in the bay. i go way back to those days, my parents, my family, my uncles and everybody. this faithful fan base is multi generations, we've seen a lot in our lifetime. we're ready to be here in the super bowl again and win it this time around, and bring that love right back to the bay. this is the biggest moment right now in sports, and we are here and ready to go and hyped up.

at noontime it will be 52, reaching into the mid-50s today. and up to 57 for los gatos and mountain view. in hayward today, 57 degrees. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. mike, we see what you like to call friday late. >> not because you're going to be late but because the backup forms a little later than it does most days of the week. we're looking at the toll plaza, the metering lights have been active from their normal time. we see slowing continuing from treasure island into san francisco. no big deal here. it continues for highway 37 as well and highway 4, well, a couple more cars tapping their brakes for a little longer. a nice drive through contra costa county. looking ahead, overnight work going on at 101 and atherton avenue. folks know there's a lot of overnight work that happens from time to time. same thing over here, which is why we have maintenance closing the lower manzanita park and ride through the area. overnight road work ending tonight but there may be another

a lot of people confused it with bart. google wants to turn gemini into a name like siri or alexa. google is offering a subscription for $20 a month, the same price you would pay for chatgpt. i've said before, it's worth trying these services out for a month or two to see if they're useful to you in your job or life. you won't know until you try it. all eyes will be on a falcon 9 business jet this weekend, the one carrying taylor swift to the super bowl. now, this is not her specific jet, but it's the exact same type. you can look in the interior, though it can be customized. we don't know what hers looks like. sets you back $54 million if you're buying new. taylor's fans will follow her on services like 24 radar. hundreds of thousands watched nancy pelosi's plane as it traveled to taiwan, the first speaker of the house to visit taiwan. hundreds of thousands of people watched the final trip of queen

elizabeth from scotland back to london. here is a look at the east coast this morning. it's busier out there. okay, all these airplanes, the trick is going to be the fans finding the right plane on the way to vegas. >> so it's certainly a possibility that any flight following from tokyo could land somewhere else and then find a different way to las vegas for the game. we just don't know. so we're preparing for every eventuality and preparing for as many people as possible to be able to find out for themselves. >> the great enter net mind will figure it out. they'll figure out which plane is taylor swift. >> we saw before someone was trying to track elon musk's plane and it's legal to do that. >> it's legal to do that. in fact, the lawyers for taylor swift told that same kid knock it off with taylor swift, it's perfectly legal. it's publicly available data.

we are starting out clear this morning, but you step out the door and you're, like, okay, it is very chilly. we actually have a frost advisory in effect until 9:00, and then for the low-lying areas that deal with king tides, you're going to have a coastal flood advisory this morning and then again tomorrow morning, expiring at 1:00 tomorrow. now, we are also going to be dry throughout the weekend with rain returning late next week. so we're taking a break and seeing the dry weather settle in across the region. and we're also starting out with temperatures in the low 40s in oakland, san jose right at 40 degrees. it is 36 in walnut creek, and we may dip another degree or two in some parts of the bay area. then after the cold start, we're headed toward the mid-50s, cupertino a high of 56 degrees, 57 in morgan hill. much of the east bay up to 57, 58 degrees. we'll see that from walnut creek to danville and 55 in martinez. in half moon bay today, 55 degrees with some mid-50s in san francisco, downtown up to about 57 today.

and also 57 in novato as well as napa. you may be wondering, when is the rain coming back? we do have a nice little break here throughout the weekend into next week. but we will be watching a storm system and the potential of an atmospheric river coming in next weekend. so we'll keep you up to date on that as we get closer. but we are enjoying the sunshine in our weekend forecast, temperatures gradually warming up into the middle of next week. heads up, valentine's day is wednesday, so don't forget to pick up a gift somewhere. so we're looking now at the nimitz, mike? >> we're looking toward the nimitz where we're looking at red, traveling north, and gold -- well, headlights heading south. lighter flow of traffic at 6:21, and it's friday, a little bit lighter, a little bit longer. so we have the mild backup at the bay bridge and still some slowing into the city. no major issues. just starting to see slowing out of richmond at the toll plaza there. a new crash shows up in the richmond area, it may in fact be

♪♪ meanwhile, holding out hope. one legendary south bay band won't be performing at halftime, but they're keeping their dream alive. we hear from band members who refuse to lose faith. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this friday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. bang-bang, niners gang, your super bowl sunday may involve some serious couch time, but this may actually be a weekend to head outdoors, finally. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect weather-wise. cold start for us. >> cold start both mornings leading into the weekend, and then we'll have a nice recovery for the afternoon. as we start out with temperatures in the mid-30s this morning, some of the coldest air is in dublin right now, where we are now at 34 degrees, and 40 in

oakland. it is 35 in sonoma. after this cold start, take a look at our day planner. at noon, we're at 52 in san ramon, a mostly sunny start, and into the afternoon we're headed for the mid-50s. take a look at our highs for today. whatever you plan to do, you'll probably keep that jacket on. throughout the weekend, these are the kind of temperatures we'll see, only gradually getting warmer. i'll have a look at what's going on around the bay area this weekend in a few minutes. >> sounds good, kari. super bowl sunday is almost here, and niners fans are ready. here is a live look this morning at our niners pep rally, it's going on at the lot at city center bishop ranch in san ramon. fans packing the place, cheering for our niners. many have been there since before 4:00 a.m. >> lots of other niners fans, of course, are flocking to las vegas. >> and halftime headliner, usher, may be talking about just how much the performance means

to him. one local grammy award winning band says, why not them in the future? damian trujillo is live for us this morning in las vegas. damian, explain this to us. >> reporter: well, right now, marcus, we're at the circa resort and casino in las vegas, having a huge watch party on a sunday. they have a huge swimming pool, a putting green, a full bar, and this gigantic big screen we're going to pan over to, a huge big screen to watch the big game on sunday. it kind of looks like your back yard, laura. there is a band from san jose saying they would love to get a shot at the big stage. we're talking about lows tigres del norte out of mexico, moved to san jose in 1968, and never left. they've won multiple grammys and after one of the members attended the championship game at levi's stadium, someone posted a meme saying the chiefs have taylor swift, but the niners have lows tigres del

norte. that went viral. after our report on tuesday about the nfl coveting the latino fans, they're saying why not us at the super bowl halftime show? they don't have the crossover appeal yet, but they have hundreds of millions of fans around the world eager to see them on the big stage. >> it would be a dream, you know, we, yes, we haven't lost hope that one time we will perform at halftime. >> reporter: now, we're reaching out to the nfl to see what they think. we haven't heard yet. they've performed for the troops in germany and japan and they held a tribute concert to johnny cash 50 years after cash performed at the prison himself. we'll have to stay tuned and see

what happens there. now, laura and marcus, it's freezing here in las vegas. the mountains are snow-capped. i was going to jump in the pool. i didn't get a dare, so we're going to be without that. >> we dare you. >> reporter: it's too late. [ laughter ] >> next time. >> good to see you. among the niners fans making their way to vegas, one super fan who literally has the eye of the niner, ray pena, will be seeing sunday's game in person. he's been a 49ers fan ever since his dad took him to his first game at 5 years old and he's cheered on the team for decades. after being injured as a child, he battled health problems, including eye surgeries that were on and off again until he was diagnosed with cancer at just 30 years old. >> i had to remove one of my eyes and the first thing i wanted to do was ask for a niner eye instead of a regular eye. >> pena was selected as the fan

of the year back in 2022 and his home is filled with memorabilia from the team. he hopes to watch the team take home the lombardi trophy. >> i think we're going to get on top quick and we're not going to drop the ball this time. we're going to take it this year and this is our year and our team is amazing. i couldn't ask for a better year. >> and he doesn't just root for the team. he also supports the community every year, helping with toy drives for kids in need. as our teammates at nbc bay area have you covered, tune in for pre and postgame live as the team brings you complete game day coverage live from allegiant stadium in las vegas on sunday. pregame coverage starts at 1:30 p.m. and teams this morning are starting a process of moving dozens of decommissioned vta paratransit cars that just sat idle for some four years. this follows a recent report by our investigative unit which discovered the fleet just sitting there.

this is where they've been parked ever since 2020. those cars all past their useful life and this is in terms of mileage and reliability. but the agency says that auction plans stalled when the pandemic took hold. the removal of those cars expected to take weeks because only a few of those cars can be towed away at a time. 6:35 this morning. a surreal scene on half moon bay beach in what frankly sounds like a surreal story. authorities there say that a man hopped into a plane about 25 miles away, took off flying. this morning there's still a lot of unanswered questions. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in palo alto this morning where the plane was parked at one point. really unusual chain of events, ginger. >> reporter: unusual and strange chain of events, marcus and laura. many unanswered questions surrounding those chain of events. that plane landed in half moon bay, but we are in palo alto's airport. this is a general aviation

airport, i'm told, so no commercial flights actually come out of this airport. that's one piece that investigators know. but still many unanswered questions that carry into the morning as the investigation continues. the san mateo county sheriff's office is looking into how someone stole a red and white plane from this airport. you're seeing that plane on poplar beach in half moon bay, nose down. investigators were on scene into the night piecing together what happened. a witness was in the area when she says she saw a plane flying frightening low as she was walking on the beach with her dad and dog. >> i came back around and down to the beach and it was flying really low, landed, sort of, and then the tail just -- sorry, the nose plunked into the sand. the guy hopped out, said he ran out of gas and walked off. >> i've been doing this for 20 years and this is a first for me. >> reporter: authorities

detained a man near the beach a little while later. he is a 50-year-old man from miami-dade in florida. at this point the sheriff's office does not know if that man is a pilot, was a pilot, or has any affiliation to the palo alto airport. those are still questions that are unanswered. they're working with palo alto's police department to figure that out. but the good news in all of this is we do know no one was hurt in that strange and unusual chain of events. >> luckily no one was hurt. >> that's a good thing. >> thank you, ginger. let's take a live look this morning at sfo. this is where it is going to be a busy day with faithful heading to las vegas for the super bowl. and they're in for a warm welcome there. alaska and united airlines are both showing out for niners fans. alaska flight 13 actually includes an endorsement deal with brock purdy, who wears the number 13. fans are going to receive niners rally towel and the gate will be decorated red and gold. >> definitely a memorable

send-off. if you ever thought about driving to vegas, mike is digging deeper into that. first, we want to check in with kari. she's got a look at the weekend forecast. nice and clear. >> nice and clear. if you're about to pack the bag and catch a flight, you want to pack some extra layers because it will be chilly as our high today only reaches into the low 50s. slight chance of rain. then tonight we're down to the low 40s, tomorrow in the mid-50s. we are going to have a cool weekend, but at least it will be sunny. we're seeing that sunshine continue into sunday. around the bay area, really not much different here. we're also going to have some cool weather with highs near 60 degrees in san francisco, and overnight temperatures in the mid-40s. lots going on, because in san jose we'll have the santana row lunar new year celebration. this is tomorrow from 11:00 to 1:00. our own mike inouye will be there. our temperatures go from mid-50s to about the upper 50s for late morning into the early afternoon. in san francisco, there will be

the north bay mardi gras parade on powell street and we'll see temperatures in the 50s in the afternoon. in napa the lighted art festival continues, we're going from mid-60s down to the upper 30s, so have the jacket as those temperatures drop. you'll need more than a jacket in tahoe this weekend. we still have lingering light snow flurries, but then looking at highs in the mid-30s tomorrow and lows in the teens. if you're hitting the road, how are the gas prices? >> you're going to go to vallejo, the best price, actually the best in the state. $3.39 at express on tennessee street. maybe you'll be headed to our rally, hoping to catch that second shift, the second wave and the second wind. that's over in san ramon. $4.09 there at national petroleum on san ramon valley boulevard. if you're heading down to i-5, down to vegas, head east and

a hard start. the reason is pure and simple. money. >> it's the biggest showcase for the nfl to get across all of the things it stands for. they're hoping that people will tune in as early as possible in that 6:00 to 6:30 hour eastern time and catch most of the messaging they want to deliver. >> by messaging, he means ads. at $7 million per a 30-second spot, it adds up. after kickoff time, right about 3:00 or 3:33 p.m., give or take a few seconds or minutes. of course, the super bowl is more than just a game. for many casual watchers, it's about the halftime show. >> this year's super bowl halftime will transform into a huge concert venue. usher is this year's headliner and he also has an extra two minutes compared to previous halftime performers, and he plans to deliver on a combination of his 30 years of

it will be cool, but at least we're going to enjoy some sunshine. and this morning we have a coastal flood advisory, if you are usually dealing with high tides and some of the issues that we see along the bayshore trails and some of the parking lots like the manzanita park and ride, we always shout that out because we could see that dealing with some flooding issues late morning today and tomorrow. but weather-wise, we are all clear and looking at some of the nicer conditions settling in. but, also, the cold air is settling in, too, with walnut creek starting out this morning at 36 degrees. it's 42 in san francisco and 40 in oakland and in san jose. we're headed for the upper 50s for this afternoon, reaching 57 degrees in oakland, hayward, fremont, san jose, once again, widespread upper 50s for many areas across the bay. and tomorrow it will be just slightly warmer, not expecting a significant warm-up here in the next few days. you may be asking, when will it rain again? we do have at least a week of
