hoda got a jump on the weekend. super bowl fever. we're throwing a pep rally. >> yes, we are. >> in the bay area and kansas city. and usher showed a little leg about the super bowl halftime she. >> he did. also looking forward to spending time with those fans in kc and the bay area. >> we have a lot of news to get to this morning, including two big stories unfolding in washington that have the potential to shape the 2020 election. the supreme court taking on donald trump's ballot battle in colorado. and an investigation into president biden's handling of classified documents. >> trump with a win in nevada. it came hours after the supreme court appeared to lean toward keeping him on the ballot in colorado. >> president biden scored a legal victory. but he was forced to defend himself in prime time after the special counsel referred to the

president as a sympathetic, well meaning and elderly man with a poor memory. we'll start with peter alexander in the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. president biden late thursday trying to blunt the stinging assessment by the special counsel, coming before the cameras in what was an extremely rare nighttime news conference here. the political peril may be harder to contain with the special counsel focussing heavily on what he called the president's hazy memory. president biden angry and defiant. >> my memory is fine. >> reporter: in a hastily called news conference. >> mr. president -- >> reporter: that include a blistering assessment of the 81-year-old's age and what the report called his diminished faculties in diminished age.

the president slamming the assessment that he did not member when he son beau died. >> how dare he raise that. i don't need anyone to remind me of when he passed away. >> reporter: the special counsel said our investigation uncovered evidence that president biden willfully retained classified materials after his vice presidency. but said no criminal charges are warranted in this matter. adding that a jury would likely see the president as a sympathetic, well-meaning and elderly man with a poor memory. >> i'm well-meaning and i'm an elderly man and i know what the hell i'm doing. >> reporter: moments later the president confusing mexico and egypt when talking about the crisis in gaza. >> the president in mexico did not want to open up the gate to allow humanitarian material in.

>> reporter: he kept documents about afghanistan and notebooks with handwritten entries implicating handwritten sources and methods. >> these are misleading and just plain wrong. >> reporter: these photos show classified documents improperly stored in a badly damaged box in a collapsed dog crate in the president's delaware garage. a separate special counsel is investigating former president trump's mishandling of information. mr. trump, who pled not guilty to 40 federal counts blasting the lack of charges against president biden, calling it a two-tiered system of justice but the report says there are clear differences saying mr. biden alerted authorities about the documents and cooperated with the investigation while mr. trump did the opposite, enlisting others to destroy evidence and then to lie about it so why speak out late last

night? white house official sources tell nbc news said the president needed to address the allegations head-on to show his anger. they found the attacks on his memory according to one source gratuitous and it was important for the president to call out what they see as purely political criticism for not charging president biden with a crime. savannah. >> peter, thank you. we want to get more on this. hallie jackson is with us. hallie, as you look at this and analyze this, i mean, it is a body blow to president biden in a place where he already was vulnerable how damaging do you think thiss for it, gut punch. that's the way that one source described it to me on the democratic side, savannah, to see these quotes specifically about memory, specifically about mental could be >> reporter: here is another phrase for it, gut punch that's the way one source described it to me to see these quotes about memory and president biden's mental state. that's partly because it

validates in many ways the preconceived notions, the preconceived concerns that voters already have about the president. three-quarters of voters believe they do have concerns about president biden, his age, his mental fitness for the job, essentially. what this is doing, it is going directly at that, savannah that is part of why you are seeing a level of concern among those in the democratic party about how this plays out, what the fall-out could potentially be there was often much said about democratic bed-wetting someone said some of these concerns could end up being overblown. there are those in that orbit believe this could be damaging down the road, partly because republicans are not going to let go on this. >> if you look no further than the white house calling for a prime time news conference to address these very issues, that shows the white house considers it to be very serious. >> so you look at the remarks overnight. very interesting

we don't see these news conferences from president biden. he's not doing a traditional super bowl interview we talked about that on sunday here part of this, right, is, depending on how you see it, gives a sense of how you take away the remarks democrats will look at this and say, listen, he was emotional. he really forcefully responded to what republicans seized on, which is the idea of he forgot when his own son died. you saw the president really respond there. at the same time, and this is something those on the other side of the aisle are confused about. he confused mexico and egypt that is something you are also look at it. >> a few seconds, i have to ask, neither one of these candidates are young men, let's be honest, okay, and both have had senior moments, donald trump rece seeing people talk about this morning. it depends on how you look at it. >> i just have to ask. i mean, neither one of these candidates are young men, let's be honest, okay. both have had senior moments donald trump confusing nikki haley and nancy pelosi on

six voters in colorado who managed to get the republican front runner disqualified under section 3 of the 14th amendment, which bans those who engaged in insurrection or rebellion from holding office again. >> i have live add hell of a long time, and i have gone through a lot of presidents, and this is the first one that is trying to destroy the constitution. >> reporter: but thursday's oral arguments less focused on whether mr. trump's actions amounted to an insurrection. instead the justices appearing more troubled by the prospect of affirming a single state court's decision that could have massive political ramifications nationwide. >> what about the idea that we should think about democracy, think about the right of the people to elect candidates of their choice, of letting the people decide. because your position has the

world is pouring in to that rare and lengthy interview with vladimir putin the russian president opening up on the war in ukraine, russia's war with the united states, even artificial intelligence. keir simmons joins us with more. >> reporter: for more than two hours, president putin was allowed to focus on his favorite topics, history, the cia, ukraine, almost entirely unchallenged his interview in the past expressed sympathy for mr. putin that the first answer ran for around 30 minutes. with the war in ukraine on a knife edge, president putin says russia has always wanted to talk he has said that before. all the while, continuing to pummel the country with drones, missiles and other weapons. >> we have never refused negotiations >> reporter: the interview with conservative former fox news host tucker carlson echoing talking points from donald

our investigative unit recently discovered the fleet just sitting in a san jose parking lot where they've been since 2020. the agency says the cars were past their useful lives as far as mileage and reliability and got lost in the shuffle during the pandemic. the removal process is expected to last several weeks and the cars will eventually be auctioned off. san francisco muni is looking into a runaway bus that narrowly missed oncoming cars, the bus partially landing on the median at flourney street just south of outer mission. that's when passengers jumped out. two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. we are also working to find out, but the daly city police say they are continuing to investigate. let's get a look at the forecast. >> nice weekend ahead with sunshine, but we're starting out cold. temperatures in the 30s for a lot of our inland valleys and we'll see the high temperatures in the upper 50s for today.
