good morning. it is sunday, february 11. super bowl sunday! a live look outside of the

golden sun is shining down on the las vegas strip. what a great way to start super sunday. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. looks beautiful here and there. >> yeah. we're going to see a lot of sunshine play out for super bowl sunday, but we are starting off with some patchy clouds and patchy dense fog throughout the bay area. chilly 30s out there in dublin. so the hills waking up to maybe patchy frost on the windshield, too. we'll do 40 degrees with that sun rise over walnut creek. san jose at 45, and the foothills with the fog and chilly temperatures to start out. as we take it on hour by hour for you, we'll see the cloud cover and that fog hang around till about 10:00, 11:00 this morning. noontime, everybody is setting up for barbecues, heading out to the watch parties. we clear up the skies just a little bit more. what do we have in store for our

super bowl here in the bay area? 60s down here in south bay with plenty of sunshine. kira, back to you. >> cinthia, thanks. kickoff for super bowl lviii is at 3:30 this afternoon. from the bay area to las vegas, the faithful are ready, opening this third time is a charm in the 49ers quest for six. raj mathai has been in sin city all this week and leads our coverage and joins us from atop the rio las vegas. hey, raj. >> reporter: good morning again. it's here! all that hype, it's finally super bowl sunday. can the 49ers do it? can they win their sixth super bowl title and snap that two-game super bowl losing streak? we hope so. las vegas has been incredible, especially in the last 24 hours. last night, this place was out of control. the locals say this is the busiest and craziest they have ever seen it. take a look.

it's amazing. i don't think we've ever seen anything like this. fans just simply taking over the strip. there respect a lot of chiefs fans around, but they're very quiet and polite, walking by the niners fans, taking over. and then there's also a lot of entertainers. ♪ ♪ yeah, that's one of the big shows here at the sphere. this is u2. this place is incredible inside the sphere, the lights inside and outside. by the way, bono and u2, they know about the super bowl. they did the halftime show in 2002. as for today's halftime show, it's going to be usher. but the real show, the 49ers and the chiefs. kira, back to you. >> ain't that the truth, raj. thanks so much. as raj said, the day is finally here. excitement has been building up all week, but really you could say it's been building up since back in 2020 when the niners faced the chiefs in super bowl

liv in miami. we want to bring in our niners faithful since 1978, damian trujillo. damian woke up early this morning. you've been there all week. do you still have your voice? >> reporter: let's test it out. it's very hard to say. it's been loud here the entire week. it's just been filled, as raj said, with 49ers fans. i think my unscientific testing here, it's been at least double the amount of chiefs fans that we have seen here. the 49er faithful are everywhere, and they're showing their colors at the different parties out here. this city belonged to them, because there's just red and gold everywhere. there were events up and down the strip. one of those was the area hotel and casino right here on the strip. we saw mike shanahan there, the former coach and father of kyle shanahan. events like this give every fan

the opportunity to mingle with current and former players. one fan from dublin going down the list of all the celebrities he's met so far. >> mike shanahan, dez bryant. who else did we see? >> reporter: he's not even going to the game. he just came here to have fun like most of the people here in las vegas. that's what a lot of them are doing here this weekend. right now, the strip, not many people walking along the strip, and i can tell you why. this is hangover sunday. walking down the casino coming over here to the live shot, some of them barely going to take a nap right now so they can wake up for the big game. kira, we are in las vegas. the city that frank sinatra built. if i can borrow a line, "luck be a lady tonight." >> i love that way. great way to end your live shot.

thank you so much, our friend, for being up this morning. we love you. go, niners! las vegas, speaking of, is playing defense against potential threats with hundreds of thousands of people in sin city as damian just said. safety, security, and surveillance are a top priority on the strip. local, state, and federal enforcement have increased patrols on the grounds and the skies. security levels are compared to that of a presidential inauguration. >> the challenges, you're trying to separate the stupid from the sinister. we take it all seriously until we can rule out it's not a threat to the community. >> the department of homeland security says it does not have intelligence to threats to the stadium or the city. back here in the bay, salesforce tower shrouded in clouds, but it was dipped in that red and gold last night for the beloved niners. the 49ers are hosting an official watch party at thrive city outside of chase center.

it's free today, but you have to sign up in advance and tickets are sold out. get this, though, niners are also hosting international watch parties in mexico and the united kingdom. if you weren't lucky enough to get into the city, manny's in the mission district is throwing its own celebration, calling it the super gay super bowl watch party. they'll be serving up rainbow dip and more as a way to welcome new fans to the game. and this pub will welcome niner fans. they said their staff is ready for the crowds. they'll be serving chicken wings during the big game. they're right ahome from the niners original home. super bowl lviii is in las vegas, but no matter the outcome, san francisco law enforcement is on alert. just like at the nfc championship game, some off ramp also be closed around the

mission district. you can see where on this map. roads will be closed to limit the potential of destructive celebrations. muni buses will be rerouted in some parts of the city, as well. and o teammates at nbc sports bay area have you covered as they have been all season long. be sure to tune into 49ersre and postgame live. the team will bring you coverage live from the stadium today. pregame coverage starts at 1:30 this afternoon. kickoff is at 3:30. all right. we want to go to other news now. we are following developing news out of san francisco where violence marred the lunar new year celebrations in chinatown. take a look at this video. this is the aftermath of a burned wamo robo taxi. san francisco police tell us someone threw a firecracker at it before a crowd joined in. it happened on jackson street. we have video from social media

that appears to show the act of vandalism. people hitting the car there you can see. wamo tells us a group of people surrounded the self-driving car, breaking the windows, damaging the car. the group put graffiti on the car and someone threw a lit firework inside once the window was open. that's what appears to have started this massive fire. wamo says fortunately no passengers were inside. so far no arrests have been made. an east bay family torn apart and a community shocked after a woman found her husband stabbed to death at the park where he worked. it all happened around 5:00 a.m. in pleasant hill on friday. police got a call about a man in a parking lot on gregory lane. when paramedics got there, they found the man was stabbed to death. his wife found him there. she was worried after he didn't

return home friday night after his shift working as a janitor for the parks and rec department. >> she became concerned when he hadn't returned home after his shift working at the park last night. so she drove to the park. >> what could be motivation or reason for somebody to commit such a crime? heinous crime like that right here. >> police have not identified a person of interest, or a motive. he leaves behind a wife and two young children. a go fund me page has been set up to help the family with funeral and other expenses. it is just shy of 7:10 on our sunday morning. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, we go live to

he would not charge joe biden for his mishandling of classified documents, he offered a scathing indictment of the president, talking about his faulty memory. while he does not serve in a partisan capacity, democrats are rushing to biden's defense, noting that he was appointed by former president trump. so would hur's characterization of biden prove more damaging for a presidential bid than a charge? please join me in welcoming kristen welker. you are speaking with the co-chair of joe biden's re-election campaign. is he working on damage control? how can biden's re-election bid recover from that report? >> well, i think that it's fair to say they are in full damage control. he was out front defending joe biden in the face of this report. also defending the fact that as he says, he believes he's still

sharp, he's worked with him up close and personal and he feels like he doesn't miss a beat. you are hearing that robust type of response in all hands on deck response, not just from his campaign co-chair. he had a chance to talk to the dhs secretary. he made similar points. he said if you go into a meeting with joe biden, you better be prepared, because he is ready to bring it in those meetings. so what's happening is this full defense of joe biden. but here's where it gets interesting, kira, and perhaps a little challenging. i've been talking to democratic sources who say they want joe biden to be doing the damage control, that he's the only one who can make the difference. the only person who can convince voters that joe biden is up for another four years is joe biden. so my question is, are we going to be seeing more of him? i anticipate there are discussions about that behind the scenes with aides in the white house, in the campaign.

"meet the press" is on at 8:00 a.m. right after this news cast. back in the bay area, a boy is lucky to be safe after getting trapped on a cliff yesterday and being rescued by a helicopter. it happened in the golden gate national recreation area yesterday afternoon. if you can see there, a

helicopter lowered a firefighter on a cable about 150 feet down the cliff to the boy, lifted them both back up to safety. rescuers say the boy wasn't hurt, he just climbed down the bluff but couldn't get back up. in contra costa county, health leaders say there is no impact to neighbors after petroleum coke dust was released from the refinery yesterday around 1:00. coke dust is a black powdery substance similar to charcoal created during the refining process. the refinery says they were transporting the dust when some spread into the air. county health says the dust does not spread off site. as we've been talking about super bowl lviii, it's expected to reach a broader audience thanks in part to the taylor swift effect. and they're hoping to attract fans of bikini bottom.

sponge bob square pants and his friends are co-hosting the super bowl on nickelodeon. we'll have real action from the gridiron with a twist. some augmented reality animation and that famous nickelodeon slime. our own laura garcia spoke to sponge bob and friends who say they're excited for this opportunity to be a part of the big game. >> we get to do the biggest sports event in the country with a license to be goofy. >> there's a serious side to football, which players to watch, the timing of the four quarters, the scoring. sounds like these three have a little studying to do before kickoff at 3:30. >> how much does sponge bob and patrick and sandy know about football? >> what's the point? >> patrick! patrick, you have five points. >> five isn't even the score in football. you can watch super bowl live

sunshine peeking up above. we do have a system just to the north that will bring us the tail end of it. so the high clouds will reach the bay area later on today. so let's get you the hour by hour temperatures and conditions as you plan your super bowl sunday. off to a chilly start, 40s and upper 30s towards livermore, as it is the hills under that frost advisory. as we go into the afternoon, we are going to see the sunshine starting to build, a few high clouds, and we'll go into this afternoon with low 60s down here in san jose for people just walking closer to levi stadium. san francisco, 58. we'll do 57 out there in vacaville. in las vegas, they are starting off with sunshine, but the temperatures are going to feel like san francisco as we go into kickoff at 3:30 inside allegiance stadium, so wear a nice layer under your 49ers game attire. as far as the rest of the weekend goes, and into next

week, there are a little bit of changes ahead. the models are putting a hint of rain on wednesday and thursday. it's going to be light, so i don't think it should mess with any championship parades. as far as the rest of the week goes, we'll start to arrive with a more substantial system friday and saturday, with rain and snow into the bay area and continuing on into sunday. so a couple of active days ahead for next weekend. so you have a couple of dry days to plan ahead. notice as we start to paint on the contours here, looking at the dark purples in the north bay hills and the mountains in santa cruz once again, that will feel the rain and get into the winds. we'll see chances there of about two to three inches, as we put these pieces together. each out towards the sierra, feet of snow will be coming about as we go into the president's day holiday next weekend. so overall enjoy what we have left of this super bowl weekend. dry and sunny, at least for the start of it. things will start to take an

of chants "niners, niners!" the faithful representing from the east coast to the west coast, all parts in between. fans of the red and gold are here to cheer for the 49ers in super bowl sunday. >> they're full of energy just like i am. it's an amazing feeling, knowing that we're going to win the super bowl. >> reporter: it's not just the strip, the faithful have taken over sin city. they had a rally at hard rock cafe. joe montana made a brief appearance. another 49ers legend was in the house, he's a four-time super bowl champ. he knows the impact winning a super bowl can have on a players life. >> once you win this game, it changes a lot of people's lives. it changed mine. to become a world champion, even 30 years later, when i walk around, four super bowl rings followed my introduction. it's part of your life. but you have to get it done.

parties. >> we are also going to see that sunshine hitting vegas later on throughout the day. we are starting off with areas of patchy fog and some chilly temperatures compared to yesterday. a couple degrees cooler. so 45 in san jose, but as we go into morgan hill, they are in the 30s. just east of there, the foothills of the santa clara valley are under a frost advisory. 40 in napa and 39 in santa rosa. as we plan our super bowl sunday around the bay area, notice we have that fog around the golden gate bridge, but that timeline there does mix it out as we go sbok 11:00, 12:00. in the afternoon, upper 50s with high clouds lingering around. as far as the east bay goes, walnut creek, we are also starting off with a chilly morning, transitioning into the 60s later on throughout the day. nice and mild down here in san jose. so lots to talk about and celebrate on this super bowl

sunday. >> lots to celebrate. we have just about eight hours until kickoff of super bowl lviii. we have a live look here at the stadium in las vegas where, as you know by now, the niners and chiefs will fight for the lombardi trophy. but before we get to the game, it's all about the tailgating, the food, the atmosphere. cinthia, will it be a good day to tailgate? >> we are starting off chilly, in the 40s there this morning. but once you get out there and have a lot of fun, you don't mind the temperatures because you're just having a good time and just in all of that environment, it gets warm. >> and it's crowded, and you're excited and moving around. speaking of tailgating, our chef extraordinary jay gray joins us from just outside the stadium. i feel like this is ground hog day. are you making eggs again, jay? you have the best assignments. >> reporter: i am making -- i

am, kira, cinthia, good morning. the morning is beautiful. when you buy the griddle here, it's not too cold. it's nice. we are making some eggs here, hash browns, bacon, making some breakfast burritos here. we have the salsa, the cheese. just trying to get things going, because especially on super sunday, it's never too early to start to tailgate, right? so we've been doing it since the sun came up. some of those less hardy tailgaters will come out when it's close to the game. nine hours is plenty of early enough. once they get out here, it's going to be a beautiful day to do just that. it's been a great super bowl week here. 330,000 or more are traveling to vegas to be a part of the hype and the excitement, to be a part of the buildup. now, obviously, they can't all fit inside the stadium, 72,000 will be at the game. so a lot of them here without a

ticket, but just want to experience some of the fun, want to have a good time. and they have done that. vegas has been a good host, the nfl suggesting they might be back sooner rather than later when it comes to the super bowl here, just because of how the experience has been. we all know the niners are going to win. i want to know from you guys, kira, cinthia, is this going to be a blowout? i think it's going to be a good game. i know you're a big sports fan, kira. cinthia, you as well. what do you think is going to happen here? >> jay, i cannot jinx things. i cannot speak on this. i'm too superstitious. i love you for asking, though. do you travel with your own table top griddle? what's the deal there? >> reporter: well, you never know when you may need one, right? so yeah, it works out okay. >> that's a great point. i'm slightly disappointed you're not wearing red, but i love you any way.

jay, thanks for being out there for us this morning. and from jay's grid toll this, here's something to chew on as you savor your super bowl spread. the cost for a lot of game day items are lower this year, according to wells fargo, which just released prices for the top super bowl food choices. the cost of fresh chicken wings is down 5% from last year. frozen wings, down more than 10%. shrimp, mean while, down 6%. avocado dip and guacamole are about the same. the cost of beer is up 1%. if you plan on cooking or buying tick out for the game, do you have a game plan for maintaining food safety? follow the two-hour rule, wash your hands, use a food thermometer and store leftovers properly. >> you've got two options to keep food out for the super bowl. one, if you want to just relax and watch the game, we recommend

that you get like a crock pot in a warming dish or put your food in the oven, and keep that food at 140 degrees. now, on the other end, if you have cold dishes, put them in bowls nestled in ice or place them in coolers. >> experts say the same rules apply for takeout. so it's easy to say the colors of super bowl lviii are red and gold, not just the colors of our beloved san francisco 49ers but of the kansas city chiefs, as well. kris sanchez is here to explain the scientific and emotional difference between our red and gold and theirs. >> reporter: good morning. this weekend's super bowl will be the battle of the red and the gold. bu the niners and chiefs share the same color, but experts know they are n the same. in pen tone, what the design world calls the univeral language of color, the niners

on super bowl sunday, don't let that cloud cover scare you from planning all of your barbecues and activiies throughout the day. we're starting off with cold temperatures in the bay, livermore, 39 degrees as well as santa rosa. everyone else in the 40s. 46 to start in san francisco. as we go through the mid morning hours, we're hanging onto a little cloud cover, drifting away and giving us mostly the high clouds lingering about for the start of gametime at 3:30. as far as the temperatures go, we are going to be starting to warm things up in san rafael. if you have super bowl plans there, notice the timeline. more sunshine and temperatures in the upper 50s. so a comfortable day in the north bay. sunshine and temperatures in the

upper 50s in dublin. in san jose, a lot of the activity as people flock near the levi stadium. temperatures in the low 60s with more sunshine on the way. now, enjoy this dry weather while we have it. cheer on the niners and all of that. but do get ready for changes once we get through this huge weekend, because we are looking at about six to ten days from now, the 16th through about the 20th, including valentine's day weekend, president's day weekend, a three-day for some of you. we'll put rain back in the picture, as we see some above average rainfall. wednesday and thursday, i'm talking about maybe the possibility of light rain for a possible championship parade. it will be light amounts, so nothing too bad. but friday and saturday, notice that trend there. it is digging into a little bit more of that subtropical moisture and bringing about some sierra snow. this will be friday, saturday, and sunday. not only that, but we are looking at possibilities of the wind increasing once again.

i can't wait to tell you about these bay area students making strides out of this world. two teams from the bay area winning the nasa s.t.e.m. challenge. this year's challenge was to design an experiment that could be tested on a high altitude balloon fight or rocket powered lander. students from san mateo and an all-girl's team from pleasanton won. the girls ex-perment, the lunar scout technology is designed for a rocket powered lander. >> our plan is to create some sort of lunar lander that can detect surface features, kind of like a lander on a moon. >> the purpose is to check out data about how different atmospheric conditions affect tension regarding metal and 3-d

really have that kind of permission. >> reporter: green's son, kenneth green, jr., says his father pointed the camera at his own community. >> he had interest in making sure that black people looked good. my mom was the love of his life, but he also amassed a very large collection of other women. >> reporter: some of those photos are part of a current exhibit in san francisco's library, devoted to green's career. >> no one cared to document the black woman during the civil rights movement. fashion, entertainment, and politics is the proof that the black esthetic and the identity has always and will be revolutionary. >> reporter: green's career with the tribune began in 1968. it ended june 25th, 1982. >> he was trying to take a better than average picture of some train cars, and he lost his life. >> reporter: in the moments before he died, green said he misjudged the train that struck him. >> he died with the camera in his hand. >> reporter: kenneth green, jr.,
