"early today" starts right now. hi there. good morning. i'm frances rivera. are you ready for it? the chiefs are back-to-back super bowl champions, pulling off the comeback to beat the 49ers in overtime. it was all san francisco in the first half after a scoreless first quarter. 49ers got on the board in vegas with a little trickery. >> second and 10. jauan jennings, great play. this ball is in the air for a long time. able to pull it down, and he is going in for the touchdown! jauan jennings with the touchdown pass. >> the defending champions had to settle for field goals for most of the first three quarters. the 16-yard touchdown pass from mahomes to receiver valdes gave kc their first lead of the night. the fourth quarter ended in just the second super bowl in history

evaluations according to a statement from his doctors. he is now receiving supportive care and close monitoring. the pentagon says he has transferred his duties to his deputy, kathleen hicks. it's not clear rightright now how long austin has to stay at walter reed. the secretary was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. his doctors say the bladder problem is not expected to interfere with austin's, quote, excellent prognosis. donald trump is under fire for his comments about foreign policy on the campaign trail. while speaking at a rally in south carolina. the former president threatened to upend the nato alliance if he is elected back into office, potentially giving russia a green light to attack u.s. allies. nbc's alice barr joins us now from d.c. alice, good morning. these comments quickly drew a lot of backlash. >> they certainly did, frances, and good morning to you. mr. trump's comments go against a key article in the nato agreement, that an attack on one country within the alliance

would be considered an attack on all. president trump has often been critical of nato, questioning how much other countries have been contributing. this weekend he went even further and suggested he would encourage russia to do whatever it wants to our allies who do not pay. >> one of the presidents of a big country stood up and said, well, sir, if we don't pay and we're attacked by russia, will you protect us? i said you didn't pay, you're delinquent? he said yes. let's say that happened. no, i would not protect you. in fact, i would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. >> and the nato's secretary general warned that a suggestion like this puts american and european soldiers at risk. the white house condemned the comments as appalling and unhinged. the trump campaign defended the remarks saying "when you don't pay your defense spending, you can't be surprised that you get

more war." mr. trump's primary rival nikki haley, the sole republican rival remaining on the campaign trail called mr. trump's threats against nato irresponsible. she also hit back at the former president after he questioned why her husband has not been by her side on the campaign trail. haley saying, quote, michael is deployed and serving our country, something you know nothing about. and she added someone who is disrespectful of military families has no business being commander in chief. attacks between the two republican rivals are ramping up ahead of the south carolina primary. frances? >> alice, thank you. ahead of an anticipated ground offensive, israel has conducted preliminary air strikes in the southern gaza city of rafah. palestinian authorities report dozens killed. hamas is threatening to withdraw from hostage negotiations if israel pushes into the city with ground forces. the israeli army says their forces rescued two hostages seized on october 7th.

for the latest, let's go straight to claudio lavanga. good morning. let's start with the hostages. what do we know about them? well, in israel, a spokesperson for the israeli defense forces said the israeli soldiers stormed a heavily guarded building in rafah and managed to rescue the two hostages and fly them out of gaza. well, now they were named as 70-year-old louis har and 60-year-old fernando simon marman. the idf also said during the operation, they carried out heavy air strikes against targets in and around rafah to allow the rescuers and the hostages to reach a airstrip specifically set up to allow them to fly out of gaza. but there was immediate concern about the impact that these air strikes could have on the million of palestinians who have refugees finding shelter in and around rafah. they're crowding over close to

the border with an nbc news crew on the ground also confirmed they witnessed several people being taken to the hospital in rafah either dead or injured. there is also concern about the air strikes they had on the hostage negotiations, according to al aqsa, television which is run by hamas quoting a senior official saying any ground offensive in rafah would blow up any hostage negotiations just today after a u.s. administration senior official said that a major progress would have been expected earlier this week on that hostage deal. back to you, frances. >> we'll be watching closely for that. claudio, thank you. here in the united states, gunfire erupted at one of the biggest megachurchs in the country. a child is in critical condition after police say a woman started firing a rifle in between services at joel osteen's houston church. nbc's jesse kirsch has the latest.

>> reporter: in houston tonight, a peaceful day of prayer -- >> active shooter the central area lakewood church. >> reporter: turning violent around 2:00 p.m. local time. houston police say a female shooter entered lakewood church, the worshipping home of televangelist pastor joel osteen, a megachurch that can hold 16,000 people. >> she was armed with the long rifle and a trench coat with the badge pack, accompanied by a small child approximately 4 to 5 years old. once she entered, at some point, she began to fire. >> all of the sudden we heard in the backstage, somewhere around the back out there, few shots fired. >> reporter: this man saying he was waiting for a spanish service to begin when gunshots rang out. >> officer engaged, striking the female. >> reporter: police say the shooter died at the scene, adding the young child with her was hit and is in critical condition. investigators say a man was shot in the leg but is not believed to have been involved.

>> reporter: disney's ceo bob iger talking with investors on the first quarter earnings call said most of the $60 billion they plan to plow into theme parks and cruise lines will be spread out around the world. >> you can pretty much conclude that they'll be all over. >> reporter: executives of the theme park division overall had a record quarter with 10% higher operating income year-over-year. but disney world was a drag. the central parks declined. the company chalks it up to inflation and higher wages, plus lower attendance so far this year compared to the big numbers it saw a year ago for the park's 50th anniversary celebration. but they said they expect the new investments to pay off. some have been speculating disney's looking to build a fifth theme park here. the company even included a future major theme park in the controversial developer agreement it signed with the improvement district back before ron desantis' people took it over. iger was asked specifically about that fifth gate idea on
