d.c. these comments quickly drew a lot of backlash. >> reporter: they did. good morning to you, frances. mr. trump's comments over the weekend go against a key article of the nato agreement that says an attack on one country covered under nato would be considered an attack on all. donald trump has long been a critic of nato, often questioning how much other countries are contributing, but at this weekend's rally he went even further and suggested he would encourage russia to do whatever it wants to u.s. allies who do not pay. >> one of the presidents of a big country stood up, said, well, sir, if we don't pay and we're attacked by russia, will you protect us? i said you didn't pay, you're delinquent? he said, yes, let's say that happened. no, i would not protect you. in fact, i would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. >> reporter: the nato secretary general warned that a suggestion

like this puts american and european soldiers at risk. the white house condemned the comments as appalling and unhinged. the trump campaign defended the remarks saying when you don't pay your defense spending, you can't be surprised that you get more war. mr. trump's primary rival, nikki haley, called the former president's threat against nato irresponsible. she also hit back at former president trump after he questioned why her husband has not been by her side on the campaign trail. haley says, quote, michael is deployed and serving our country, something you know nothing about. and she added that someone who disrespects military families has no business being commander in chief. the attacks between the two republican rivals have been ramping up ahead of the south carolina primary. frances. >> and i'm sure it will continue well after. thank you. ahead of an anticipated ground offensive israel has conducted preliminary air

strikes in the southern gaza city of rafah. palestinian authorities report dozens killed. hamas is threatening to withdraw from hostage negotiations if israel pushes into the city with ground forces. the israeli army says their forces rescued two hostages seized on october 7th. for the latest let's go straight to claudio lavanga. good morning. let's start with the hostages, what do we know about them? >> reporter: good morning, frances. a spokesperson for the israeli defense forces said israeli forces or soldiers stormed a heavily guarded building in rafah where these two hostages were being detained by hamas. managed to rescue them and fly them out of gaza. the two hostages have been named as louis hur and fernando merman. they also said they carried out heavy air strikes seen around rafah to enable this team of rescuers and the freed hostages of course to reach an airstrip that was set up specifically to fly them out of gaza but there

was an immediate concern about the impact that these air strikes will have on the million of palestinians finding refuge, shelter in rafah. they all crowded close to the border with egypt. according to the red crescent, at least 60 people were killed and more than 100 were injured, including women and children. now, the nbc news crew that is on the ground there in gaza also confirmed that they saw -- they witnessed several people being taken to a hospital in rafah that were either dead or injured. now, there's also concern about the impact that these air strikes will have on the hostage negot negotiations. according to a television channel owned or run by hamas, rather, according to that television channel a senior hamas official said that any ground offensive in rafah will have a major impact or rather a blow out or blow off the actual hostage negotiations. that comes just a day after a u.s. senior official confirmed

that a major progress was expected on the hostage negotiations as early as this week following a telephone call between president biden and the prime minister of israel, benjamin netanyahu. back to you, frances. >> hopefully that will come to fruition and you will hear it here. claudio, thank you. breaking news, defense secretary lloyd austin is back in the hospital with what the pentagon calls a, quote, emergent bladder issue. austin was admitted to walter reed medical center sunday after a series of tests and evaluations according to a statement from his doctors. he is now receiving supportive care and close monitoring. the pentagon says he has transferred his duties to his deputy kathleen hicks. it is unclear how long austin will have to stay at walter reed. he was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. his doctors say his bladder problems is not to interfere with his excellent prognosis. one of the largest mega

churches in texas, police say a woman armed with a long rifle began shooting inside the lakewood church in houston. two offduty officers responded and she was killed. a 5-year-old boy is in critical condition and a man was shot in the leg. joel osteen spoke with the stress. >> we will continue to stay strong and move forward. there are forces of evil but the forces of god are stronger than that. >> he also praised the fast response of law enforcement saying this incident could have been a lot worse. a district journal in oklahoma has resigned after it was revealed she spent an excessive amount of her time on her phone during a murder trial. in addition to the scrolling on social media, she texted her bailiff inappropriate remarks about members of the court, including witnesses. our morgan chesky has the story. >> reporter: it's the video evidence from a courtroom camera, authorities say captures former judge tracy soderstrom on

her phone mid murder trial texting and scrolling social media. >> there were some things that i did inappropriately. >> reporter: that admission coming thursday after she announced her resignation following an investigation accusing her of gross reflect of duty and per sheet in office. over the course of a murder trial involving the death of a 2-year-old the newly elected judge texted her bailiff more than 500 times, mocking the physical appearance of attorneys, jurors and witnesses. >> i texted during a trial and that was inappropriate. the content i am not agreeing to because it doesn't matter. >> reporter: but the complaint cites messages that allegedly show she was no longer impartial. at one point she called a prosecutor gross and a horrible speaker. while praising the defense attorney texting her bailiff, can i clap for her? and during testimony texting the
